If I remember properly, the girls in the red and white dresses are early concept designs for Ruby (red) and Weiss (white). They both utilize power and recoil of their weapons/abilities as a source of mobility to both traverse the battlefield and combo their opponents into oblivion. It's so damn cool LMAO

They very much ARE discount Ruby and Weiss. Those were early designs for Ruby and Weiss that got scrapped. They were re-included as minor characters because a friend of the writers had daughters who wanted to cosplay those designs.
One thing to note is that Monty and RT used motion capture to help animate some actions, and some of the moves in this trailer used animations Monty had created for his Dead Fantasy (Dead or Alive vs Final Fantasy characters) series. Also Monty was a huge DDR and fighting game fan, including Blazeblue, which got 5 RWBY characters as DLC in Cross Tag Battle a few years after he passed away, making fighting game references isn't too surprising. And Monty had Kerry and Miles, his co-writers, watch a bunch of anime too before they started writing the show.
