That delight and happiness on Dr.Masons’ face when he said, “she was delighted to see her blood levels normal.” We need more doctors like him. God bless you. I’ve been looking for this video for the last 20 years. This came to me as a huge blessing. Thank you so much Dr.Mason.

This is me right now! I've been low-carb and keto for about 4 years and carnivore since Jan, '22. I had positive changes but not on the scale. For nearly a decade and telling four different docs about my severe fatigue and heavy periods, not one of them checked my iron/ferritin. I took a chance on one more doc that finally discovered my iron anemia. This is the second reference I've heard about alternate day oral supplementation! I'm thrilled to add one more tool to my iron battle. A toast to all the famous and not famous doctors actually bothering to look for answers for their patients and not just tossing a few labs to make us go away.

My ferritin level was at 6 in august 2020. Was admitted to hospital with something akin to psychosis- tremors, shaking, restless was an understatement; high BP ( my usual is low normal 105/65), hemoglobin was low normal but no one tested for ferritin. I lost my peripheral vision, cried on the drop of a dime, couldn’t sleep, couldn’t control my body and my emotions. Of course docs said I had depression/ anxiety and prescribed that medication. I didn’t take the pills and started calling all docs and my functional medical doc finally sent for a ferritin test. Over he past year I have been attempting to raise ferritin and keep it at at least 35. No anxiety, no depression and I e lost 40 lbs. intermittent fasting and keto saved my life and my sanity. Oh, and I bought natural antibiotics and prebiotic sand probiotics. Conventional docs claim to this day that ferritin wasn’t my problem. What a load of crap!

Wow!! Your story sounds like mine. I hospitalized 7 times bc of high bp and heart rate. The hostipal only answer was bring the bp down. They saw i was anemic and never checked my ferritin levels. Found out my doctor never checked my iron or ferritin level after 7 years. I resulted in going to a naturopaticn doctor, told her my symptoms and figured out the problem without having my labs. I've had several iron infusions but my ferritin drops after my cycle. Im still trying to discover the best iron supplement. My body is still trying to recovery after a year. I'm definitely filing a complaint with the medical board bc these doctors need to be head accountable. All the best to you.

Wowww really, your story sounds like mines. So I’m a 14 year old girl and cry everyday about my weight. I have all the symptoms of anemia, my hands and feet would even turn the shade purple sometimes that’s how severe it was. Just a few weeks ago I had to do a surgery for my back but before that they said I had another problem, which was my heart rate, blood pressure and iron. Every doctor I went to saif I had that but I didn’t take it serious back then. I thought I had a condition called hypothyroidism since they are similar in many ways. Also I had gained a lot of weight the last couple of years after losing weight, it’s not easy to lose it the same back then, due to low iron and blood pressure, and I would only eat usually less than 1,000 calories a day since I feel full after that, and I exceeded alotttt. I do weightlifting a few times, walk more than 10,000 steps a day, and always do HIIT. And my weight would still increase and I get frustrated 😢I am currently taking 3 pills of iron daily, todays the 3rd day. And I am scared. Any tips?

It can be so much more complicated than this. I have been carnivore since April 2018, and my serum iron kept tanking (ferritin was as low as 30; though a decade prior it was as low as 9, but has been up since then). I don't have heavy periods, or GI problems. I eat mostly red meat. I was even taking heme iron supplements. I even tried them every other day. I had lost 10 lbs (to a healthy weight) when I first started carnivore, but then started slowly gaining. And I was TIRED. Thyroid panel kept improving. I learned from EONutrition that Riboflavin (B2) deficiency can cause you to not absorb iron. I started taking B-100, and BAM, iron, ferritin, hemoglobin, etc finally started going up. But I also GAINED 30 lbs. I stopped the iron supplements. Don't really know what to do at this point and the weight just won't budge.

I have a similar situation although I eat chicken, fish, beef, elk and organ meat my levels remain low.
I'm hoping that supplementing with spleen will raise my levels as my doctor is pressuring me to get an iron transfusion and it's not something I want to do considering what is actually in the transfusion.
The main symptoms I have is ice cravings and fatigue...although at times it's seems more mental as my job is stressful.
I also plan to add additional B2 to see if it helps.
I definitely do not need to gain weight...
Are your levels high enough to give blood?

Dr. Paul Mason, as always, opens my eyes to different aspects of health that I previously never entertained. Thank you Dr. Mason for this enlightening presentation. I, like so many others, just ascribed the difficulty of women losing weight to hormonal differences, and women having less lean body mass than men. Despite being a voracious reader of books regarding nutrition and despite being an avid viewer of numerous lectures pertaining to health, I never encountered the central role of iron deficiency as an impediment to weight loss. This further highlights the importance of focusing on nutritional quality just as much as macronutrient ratios and calories. The fact that women have to combat so many obstacles to induce the same weight loss that men experience, just makes me respect women, who have achieved significant weight loss, that much more.

I have to ask since no one as yet has discovered why...I suffer from both very low ferritin levels, high inflammation and despite taking a high quantity (as prescribed) of ferrous fulmate twice daily, nothing changes. I haven’t been able to lose weight in years. I had put it down to a fairly inactive lifestyle due to requiring crutches to walk and because of repeated chest infections that have now put me on long term antibiotics.
    I also crave ice.
Is there any tests I can suggest to my own doctors that might show something that has been missed so far?

    • @joantendler6518
      @joantendler6518 5 років тому +7

Have you had a gut biome test? Your problem may very well be related to low Faecalifacterium prausnitzii, which is needed for ferritin/iron metabolism, and which would certainly have been lowered by the antibiotics. Craving ice is a symptom of low iron and/or zinc. In a study, F. prausnitzii plus another bacteria plus yogurt bacteria increased iron up to 12-fold. Also, iron supplements actually decrease F. prausnitzii! “F. prausnitzii is considered as one of the most important bacterial indicators of a healthy gut.” It lowers triglycerides, increases insulin sensitivity, increases muscle mass, helps with leaky gut, decreases adipose (fat) tissue inflammation, increases arachidonic acid (an essential fat that’s necessary for gut health), and enhances mitochondrial respiration (energy!). This is probably in part because it produces the ketone butyrate, needed for gut energy, and 70% of our heart, liver, kidney, and muscle energy. Low F. prausnitzii is found with IBD, celiac, diabetes, fatty liver, and obesity. F. prausnitzii is increased with whole grain sourdough rye bread, cayenne, lingonberries (but not with blueberries), pectin, more vacuum cleaning(?), and these probiotics: Lactobacillus gasseri, Bifidobacterium bifidum, and Bifidobacterium longum (F. prausnitzii itself can’t be taken as a supplement). Many common meds and supplements lower F. prausnitzii: anti-biotics!, proton-pump inhibitors, omega 3 supplements/fish oil/fish only-no meat-diet, a gluten-free/low FODMAP diet, a high meat diet, flaxseeds and flaxseed oil (more omega 3 fats), essential oils, and smoking. When omega 3 fats are high, they lower levels of the essential fat arachidonic acid, and when F. prausnitzii is low, arachidonic acid is low. Importantly, people with higher levels of arachidonic acid have less inflammation. Arachidonic acid is also critical for fighting infections (including lung infections!) and for intestinal health, so it could be a very beneficial supplement for you. Arachidonic acid is highest in liver, egg yolks (esp. duck), bacon fat, and poultry. Glycine, which tastes like sugar, is also very beneficial for gut health. I sweeten my decaf coffee or yogurt with glycine. F. prausnitzii thrives only in an alkaline environment, so adding a tablespoon of malt vinegar at every meal is a good idea. All of these things will be very helpful for many other health problems as well. Also the ketogenic diet, which is anti-inflammatory, was shown to raise F. prausnitzii, specifically due to the increase in saturated fats. My keto diet, which is mainly based on traditional Northern European foods, includes-at every meal-a slice of whole grain sourdough rye bread (it's low in gluten and very digestible) spread with chevre, plus vinegar, cayenne, and MCT oil (these keep you in ketosis) added to meat/fish/eggs/sheep's milk yogurt or goat cheddar cheese (digestible) and vegetables. Butyrate is also in cheese (cheddar) and butter, but not in plant-based cheese, margarine, or plant oils. In fact, the plant fat linoleic acid, in oils, peanut butter, nuts, seeds, wheat, quinoa, avocado and olive oil, is a huge problem because linoleic acid lowers good gut bacteria. So, it's best to avoid these foods. In addition, estrogenic chemicals lower ferritin by binding to the amino acids serine and threonine. Estrogenic chemicals include bisphenol A, pesticides (including Roundup), birth control hormones, fragrances, and more, so they should be avoided, if possible. Serine and threonine (and lysine, glycine and histidine) were found to be low with obesity, and all of these can be taken as supplements-I do (threonine tastes a bit like maple syrup or salted caramel, and it's also needed for gut health). Zinc is also needed for gut health and much more, and is low with obesity, so it's an important supplement. I looked into this whole issue for my sister, so I had a lot of notes! She’s also on the keto diet and the supplements that I described, and really loves it-she feels so much better in many ways! It’s an easy and delicious diet-I highly recommend it! I don't have a medical or nutrition degree, but I have a masters in architecture.

But is antibiotics the only way to treat chronic inflammation? What if they can't find what causes the inflammation? How would you proceed then? Just take a generic antibiotic to see if it works? I have this exact issue of high inflammatory markers - very high CRP and PV - but despite numerous blood tests to see where it stems from they couldn't find a thing except a very slight elevation in anti-nuclear antibodies. My Drs say that I'm probably just someone whose normal range of these markers is a bit higher than the national average and nothing they can do about it. But I have the same problem of never being able to lose weight on keto and even on carnivore the weight loss is excruciatingly slow to negligible despite eating OMAD, red fatty meat, coffee/cream and water. It would be very interesting to know what people like me can do to combat this mysterious inflammation without the aid of Drs who are savvy about these things like Dr Mason. For now I'm sticking to carnivore as slow weight loss or not at least there is some movement downwards on the scale despite taking months before results are seen.

Considering that our diet has been wrong for a long period of time, we really must have some level of inflammation throughout the body.
We need to learn about real nutrition, not to accept any kind of discomfort by the body,
Our body is a perfect machine, but if it doesn't have quality raw material, it won't be possible to have a quality body.

@@cassieoz1702 I went vegan thereafter. I felt so bad on that keto regimen that by introducing whole food carbs I felt much better, at first. Destroyed my gut and much more, later. I have lab tests of both experiments (one year each) and the common things to both are: lower ferritine, lower red cells' count, lower iron, higher fasting glucose (85-94 vs. 75 on a meat based diet), high triglycerydes (80 keto, 100 vegan, vs 47). Of course food is not everything but if nutrition is lacking so is the ability to excercise (I do quite a lot of sport for my age) which also keeps these values on check. Since the vegan diet removed any cheese/milk, despite being a mess for the lack of nutrition, got me at "better" energy levels initially than a cheese/veggie/butter keto. So if you have a good buffer of nutrition you can sustain it for a month or two, during summer maybe. Fruits with some meat is better than keto fat bombs for sure. No doubt that the inflamation derived from food intolerance was high on the keto. Also too much veggies that bind iron and the lot of oxalates in them, probably. Meat is my body's preferred food for sure, no need of lab tests: no bloating, no crashes, no flu during winter, fast recovery after excercise. Never get nauseated by it, never. Stilll eating some yogurt for calcium thou, and eggs and occasionally veggies/starch. And some raw-milk aged cheeses, but less is better than more, can feel it immediatly after eating. On this regimen since more than one year and continue. No reason to stop by now

I honestly believe I was so deficient in several vitamins, as well as iron, that I had to have it. And then I started buying grass Fed. For awhile, I was eating about a pound a week, not recommended long term. Another thing about liver is its so nutrient dense, if not overcooked, you will not get hungry for six or seven hours .Gradually my craving for it decreased; I usually eat a pound in ten to fourteen days.
