Hightower is the great Charles “Bubba” Smith: Played at Michigan State and was the no.1 NFL draft pick by the Baltimore Colts in 1967. His position was defensive end. He still remains the only Michigan player picked first, iirc. Played in Superbowl III and V with the Colts, winning Superbowl V. He went on to play 9 seasons in total for the Colts, Raiders, and the Houston Oilers.
YES!!!! This movie is tailor made for a Mr. Video reaction. Me and my buddy had to lie about our age to get into this at the theater. It holds up very well today. Hugh Wilson, the director, was also the creator of the classic sitcom WKRP in Cincinnati. There are some good interviews with him on UA-cam about that show. He’s fun to listen to - harkens back to a time before entertainment became fully corporatized.
My favorite tidbit about this movie was that the sound engineer was used to upping the sound sensitivity on the mikes when Hooks was talking. Well, when they get to the stairwell scene, he pre-set the increased sensitivity - then just about got his ears blown off with ‘Don’t Move, DIRTBAG!!!’ 😅
I have a soft spot for this movie, because it was filmed in my hometown! It's always a trip to see Toronto from waaaay back in the day! Brings me back to my childhood!
the "Blue Oyster Club" was filmed in an old blues bar called The Silver Dollar Room in Toronto. I used to live down the street from it and it was impossible to go by it without whistling that song they were dancing to.
"Hightower" - Bubba Smith "Tackleberry" - David Graf "Hooks" - Marion Ramsey "Commandant Lassard"- George Gaynes "George Martin" - Andre Ruvin "Captain Reed" - Ted Ros "Mrs. Fackler" - Debralee Scott "Chief Hurst" - George R. Robertson May they all rest in peace.
They vary in quality, but even the bad ones are alright. Michael Winslow (Larvell) is the reason to keep watching (and the recurring Blue Oyster joke).

Real comedy without censorship is the best laughs ever. Watching the late 70's & 80's stand up comedians like Richard Pryor, Eddie Murphy, and Robin Williams were some of the best times of my life.
I grew up on these movies. Literally. I saw this first when I was 9 or 10. I was an 80's kid. That's how we rolled. I didn't understand the sexual stuff, but I still found the film funny. The podium bit, I didn't understand what she was doing, I just thought his facial expressions were funny.
turkish person here. about the same age as the mr. video. this movie and sequels were on about every other week at 90's here. most amazing thing to me would be him really not seen this before.
This movie was just topped of with Michael Winslow's amazing sound FX and vocal talents! His stand up bits are incredible. Give Bella some scritches for me!
Everyone wonder why the heck Tackleberry is so serious and all till like half way through the movie when they realise that is literally his personality.
George Gaynes was an unappreciated comedic genius. His timing was always perfect, and he made his inept yet caring Commandant Lassard so likeable. His brilliant delivery during the podium scene is probably the highlight of the movie. You should definitely see the rest of the ones with Steve Guttenberg in them. They're variable in quality, but all fun. I think you'll enjoy them. After Guttenberg left the quality started going downhill dramatically. On the plus side, it gave some decent paychecks to actors who were regulars of the series who weren't getting many jobs elsewhere. Another comedy from this time period that I think you'd really like, that NOBODY reacts to, is the early Tom Hanks comedy "Bachelor Party". You should definitely check it out.
Your Pit in the intro: "But daaaaaaddddd I wanna be in the video to... See I'm a lap puppy..." I remember my Pit doing the same thing. Also, I was a cop. The whole Police Academy series made me laugh as a kid. After going through the Academy, I wish my experience had been like this. But noooo, my instructors were hardcore. Step out of a line at the academy; do PT. Tick off an instructor? You had 12 up your rear end until you corrected yourself. Obviously in my state most of us went through FTO (Field Training Officer) for almost a year before we went to the academy so you had better have yourself squared away before you went to the academy. I spent 6 months in FTO, several of which were on my own as a Patrolman Basic before heading to the Academy. 16 weeks at the academy with me driving 3 hours back to my city on Friday evening and then having to work my shift Saturday and Sunday then drive back to the academy Sunday evening and do it all over again Monday through Friday. I worked 7 days a week, 8 hours Saturday and Sunday, and 12 plus hours at the academy Monday through Friday with no days off. Graduated, and then returned to the PD and went through extended trainings, that then sent me back for a month to three months to get various certifications, plus extended training at the PD. It's not as easy being a cop as everyone thinks. I was also going to night school to get my BA in Criminal Justice while doing all this. Needless to say, it was nothing like the Police Academy movies, SWAT movie. Closer (minus the shootouts) is Third Watch. Want to see real Police work? Live PD (now called On Patrol Live on Reelz on Dish network). Cops only shows the "exciting" parts of law enforcement. Cops doesn't show the heart break of having to deal with a death. The mundane of traffic stops, paperwork, boredom waiting on calls or running radar on a city street or patrolling.... They never show the boring crappy parts of the job. Watched this movie about 20 times the summer of 85’. I was 10 and kept the movie all month, my old man was pissed when he seen the late charges 😂 classic movie!!
Welcome to the World of "Police Academy" Enjoy the rest of this Franchise!!!! You have to watch them all!!!
I'm so glad you watched this! Truly, they don't make comedy like this anymore. This, the Airplane & The Naked Gun series', etc are comedy gold that are SO under-appreciated and looked over in the modern day. This type of "stupid enough to be funny" and unapologetic comedy wouldn't survive being made in this day in age, so, thank you for reacting AND enjoying these types of movies! :))
I'm sooo happy you finally watched one of my all time favorite comedies! These are absolutely epic!! Love the stupid silly humor! P.s. Please please do the rest! (Well except maybe the last one😅).
