You should definitely watch the first 6 films as they are a lot of fun; part 7... well, it exists and you make it through the first 6 why not finish the set.
The thing with Tackleberry is that he doesn't care about power he just wants a job where he can wield a gun and has a decent chance to get into fire fights.
Fun little fact. During the Shooting range, when Barbara swings the gun toward the cadets and they all duck, except for Tackleberry, who is the only one to have any prior gun knowledge. He knows the gun hasn't been pumped so it won't fire
The Blue Oyster Bar is considered a classic. Rumour has it that what happens in the bar wasn't scripted and the director had no idea what to do right up to the point where everyone was on set. The script just said that there were bikers in the club. It was the local motorcycle club who were hired as extras that came up with the idea when they were told that no one had any idea. They huddled together and decided amongst themselves what to do just before the take and did it without anyone else, not even the other two actors, knowing what they would do
Please, please, please at least do the first three. 🙏 Bobcat Goldthwait is what makes these movies gold for me. Especially his interactions with Sweetchuck in part 3.
I grew up watching these movies in the 80s. I hope that you end up watching all of the "Police Academy" movies. At least the first four ones. This one, the next one, and the fourth one are my favorites from this movie series.
I'd say the first 6 are all great, 5 changes the tone up a bit, and 6 dumbs the humor down to be a bit more slapstick, but they're still really good funny movies. The seventh one (where they went to Russia), and the made for TV reboot I seem to recall vaguely existing were where things really went off the rails.
The fact that you’re even reacting to _Police Academy_ is comedy, Mary. I don’t know if you’re the first on UA-cam but none of the men and women whose channels I follow seem to be connoisseurs of the dirty and ridiculous. You get an award for Best Original Thought.
30:32 "DONT MOVE DIRTBAG !" That was her catch phrase in all the Police academy films, her name was Marion Ramsey, she passed away *2 years ago almost to this day 7/1/21. RIP
Michael Winslow (Jones) is my favorite. He really can make all those sounds himself. I've heard people refer to him as the "human sound effects machine" because of all the sounds he can make. Try looking him up on UA-cam if you get a chance. One of my friends and I saw him perform live in person back in the 90's and he had us laughing so hard that we couldn't hardly breath. lol
I forgot how funny and good this movie is, it’s one of my favourite comedies My favourite parts are Mahoney defending Barbra, Hooks finds her voice, Hightower standing up for Hooks and flipping the car The whole final riot deserves its own section of praise, the sequence is just genius, it’s so well put together and it is a perfect blend of chaos, danger and comedy and every main character grows in their own way
Michael Winslow was the guy doing the sound effects, it was really him doing those sounds. He was also featured in Spaceballs, which is another good comedy. Bubba Smith played Hightower, and he played football at Michigan State and in the NFL.
The _Police Academy_ films, seven in total, were a staple of cable tv and public television. Only one I watched in theaters, it was part 5 with the Miami setting.
You’ve got to keep reacting to these. They’re so much fun! One thing, though. Don’t overthink it. The Police Academy movies are meant to be irreverent and fun. They’re not deep, but they are so fun, and the characters are very lovable.
After checking your movie history, you may be in the mood for a re-watch! Michael Winslow appeared as a radar operator in the movie Spaceballs (1987), in which he performs all the sound effects himself during one scene. Mel Brooks (who wrote, directed, produced, and co-starred in the film), stated that by doing so, Winslow saved the film money.
Hey Mary, Michael Winslow, the character of Larvell Jones, is the only actor that appeared in all 7 "Police Academy" movies, the Police Academy TV series and "Police Academy: the animated series"
I love that you reacted to this one! Police Academy is one of my favorite franchises ever! Definitely my kind of humor as well! All the characters are soo quirky and funny! Please react to all of them up to the 6th one if you can, but avoid the 7th one at all costs!
"Moses Hightower" was portrayed by Charles Aaron "Bubba" Smith RIP. A retired NFL player Who was a 6 ft 7 in (2.01 m) and 265 pounds (120 kg) Defensive End {his position}. He went into Movies, tv and even some TV adverts after retiring from the game in 1976. He was the first pick in the 1967 NFL draft. His college went on to retire his jersey number in 1988 I think. He was a beast on the field. He was so much quicker than anyone of his size was thought to be able to be. He played in two Super Bowls for the Baltimore Colts earning him a ring for helping the Colts win Super Bowl V {five} He had many college as well as professional Football accolades. Sadly after his passing he was diagnosed with CTE.
I'm glad you enjoyed this. I was born in 1980 so grew up with these as a kid, one being made every year in the second half of the 80's. I hope you watch the sequels too , i love all but the last one. In those you get to see how a lot of the main characters continue throughout their time in the police force.
G.W. Bailey was an unsung character in these movies. He was the perfect foil for Mahoney and went on to be my favorite character in another police series: The Closer and it's sequel Major Crimes. Tackleberry was another favorite because he was so over the top.
This came out when I was in elementary school, and the humor seemed to be a pretty big hit with the kids I knew. I don't know if that says more about the maturity of the movie, or what 7-8 year-olds were like in the early 80s. Even as a fourth-grader, I can remember conversations getting pretty filthy, and the most shamelessly raunchy jokes I ever heard were the ones I heard from my peers in the single-digit age bracket. Police Academy was juuust risqué enough that, if your parents kept you sheltered, you probably weren't allowed to see it, but not dirty enough that your friends' parents would stop to wonder whether you were allowed to see it, when you watched it with their kids. Kids being kids, though, they still tended to talk more about Michael Winslow's sound effects than anything else. Then again, I can remember a classmate talking about movies like Porky's and I Spit on Your Grave, of all things, in first or second grade: Some kids got left alone with an unlocked Cable box... I guess there are a lot of younger people who have never heard the "J word" before. We had a local TV personality use it, some years back, without knowing what it actually meant. The shocked look on her black co-host's face said it all. Of course, they packed her off to "reeducation camp"/sensitivity training. I felt bad for her, since A: The experience was obviously utterly humiliating, and B: It's not like she needed a class to teach her not to be racist, what she needed was to never use a word on-air (or anywhere else), unless she was sure she knew the meaning, first. A little literacy is a dangerous thing. Oops. Here endeth the lesson.
as a guy that grew up on this franchise and watches these movies at least twice a year(all of them), this was fun to watch it with a younger perspective whos seeing it for the first time. looks like you had fun watching it too. gives me hope for the future. 😄
22:00 That's the late Bubba Smith, a former NFL star. He was huge even among football players. One of my uncles had to do the same thing with a Honda Civic.
I would definitely recommend reacting to at least Police Academy 2, it's hilarious. It may be more to your liking when you see the new character additions and the story arcs.
Growing up in Germany but living in Ireland my German accent always "gets" so much stronger when I am in trouble "I am sorry sir I did not know that *blink blink*" Works like a charm 😂 No idea if it works because I am a sweet polite tiny female or because I am never doing anything too bad or because of the accent... maybe it's the combination 🤣🤣🤣
Of course, there is nudity--it's an '80s comedy. I can't think of any without nudity. Speaking of which, please watch Porky's (1981), also starring Kim Cattrall. My favorite of these is Police Academy 4: Citizens on Patrol (1987). I hope you'll watch it!

I was a teenager when I watched these movies. The first one I ever watched was the 4th movie, Police Acadeny: Citizens on Patrol. Michael Winslow is the master of sounds.
Fun fact: Michael Winslow a.k.a Larvell Jones is known as the “Man of 10,000 sound effects and provided all the sound effects his character does throughout the movie.
As someone born in 1975, this is a classic '80s flick that I would watch anytime it's on. Watching more of your reactions, it's awesome learning you enjoy adult humor. From this era, I wonder if you would enjoy "Stripes"
Ooooh man... this threw me waaaaay back .. i basically grew up with this movie on a VHS in the very early 90s. I was probably 5 yo when i first started watching it; certainly i was in a pre-school age. I remember being completely oblivious and asking my parents what was the lady doing to the man in the projection room that made him talk so weirdly and them not saying a single thing. Damn.. The nostalgia surge with this one is 10/10.
The actor who works at parking the cars in the start of the movie , was also in a made for TV movie that's a MUST watch. It's called " THE DAY AFTER ". This movie made such an impression on people that they kind of freaked . It even made the news because it was so realistic .
Ya gotta love a *made in Canada* movie! Thank you Toronto. Fun fact: "The Blue Oyster" is a real bar in Toronto and every year people go there and dance to that very song, that is STILL on the jukebox.
This not only led to several sequels, it led to a cartoon series with toys and then a live action tv series. There’s likely a comic book series somewhere.
A very fun action comedy film with an ensemble cast of actors and comedians from Steve Guttenberg, Michael Winslow, GW Bailey, George Gaines, Donovan Scott, David Graf, and Kim Cattrall.
While Tackleberry is genuinely psychotic, he really does have a heart of gold. You get to see it more in the next movie when he meets his new (ahem) partner……😉
This came out when I was a child, around the time my family got our first VCR. Yes, that's right. I'm old enough to remember first getting technology that was probably already obsolete by the time you were born. We used to just record things right off the TV. Sometimes, one of the pay channels would have a free preview weekend or something to give you a taste to try and get you to subscribe, and people would just record all the movies they could before it ended. My uncle used to have a huge collection of movies like this, and depending on the quality in which you chose to record in, you could fit one to three, or maybe even four movies on one VHS. Early on after first getting a VCR, we borrowed a couple of tapes from a friend and never returned them. I think this tape had this movie and "War Games" on it, and at the time, it was one of the only tapes we had. Suffice it to say, I'm sure I was much too young to be watching this movie, but I watched it over and over again so many times!
It`s funny now how you have so many streaming services that we are basically back to cable ages because you have so many choices to stream from. I was born in 1987 and have many memories of vhs and rewinding my favourite tapes to the point of screen tering.
The great thing about the Police Academy movies is that the characters are so lovable, the weakness of the sequels doesn't really matter. Most of them are fun regardless of plot.
@@tiagoalves2056 I'd say 5 and 6 have some redeeming features. Harris stays fun (not a huge fan of Mauser from the middle period), and Jones gets more play. For some reason I thought Mahoney was in them...funny how memory works.
The whole series is pretty good, even with some weaker entries in the mix. Not a huge Gutenberg fan, but the rest of the main cast is fantastic, especially Michael Winslow whose hilarious sound fx would become a staple of the series.
My favorite as always been the 6th movie, but #5 is a close second. I love Jones so much overall but in the 5th, one of my favorite jokes of all of the movie is when he does the submarine with the jetski. OMG I still laugh at that joke to this day.
Police Academy is of a great vintage year for movies... 1984, which also gave us Ghostbusters, Revenge of the Nerds, Karate Kid, Beverly Hills Cop, Gremlins, Footloose, Last Starfighter, Sixteen Candles... and many, many more.
Police Academy was one of the first big films that shows a lot of Toronto where I grew up. :) The Blue Oyster Bar is actually a place called The Silver Dollar. About 15 years ago I photographed the band the Tokyo Police Club there for some promos.
G.W Baliey who played sergeant Harris was a regular on MASH, but I loved Hooks when she finally used her voice and pointed her gun at a suspect and yelled DIRT BAG! Michael Winslow was the sound effect guy, he's had an HBO special
I enjoyed your reaction very much because of the memories it brought up. I first watched Police Academy as a college freshman, it was showing in the theater at the Downing University Center (aka the DUCK) on the WKU campus. It was one of the first R-rated movies I had ever seen and I had great time watching it with my buddies.
This one is fun but the characters grow in you as the series continues and it’s like seeing old friends again. And you will meet new ones along the way too! Some of the sequels are better than others but they are all worth watching (well… the last one is debatable in that regard, honestly). Hope you’ll reconsider doing them for the channel, you might find you like them better as you go along. 😁
We’ve known each other long enough so you can drop the Australian accent already. Kidding!! It would be funny to see you do a reaction with an American accent though!! You’re great!!
29:12 noooo!!! What? BJ? Wtf🤨 This is a brilliantly hilarious moment! Lassard is actually pondering whether they should shoot back cause it’s Harris as the meatshield😂 even he kinda hates him😂 Lassard plays dumb most of the time but he’s a jackal, his smart moments are some of the best

Mahoney, tackleberry, hooks, jones, and hightower will keep you laughing all through the first 4 films
This was fun to watch again. I saw it in the 1980's, when we rented it on VHS. Yes, I dated myself 3 times in one sentence. I'm just that good.
The great thing about the Police Academy movies is that the characters are so lovable, the weakness of the sequels doesn't really matter. Most of them are fun regardless of plot.
until number 4 it was awesome, after that it wasnope...no mahoney no Zed etc...
Police Academy had everyone talking on the 80s as everyone loved it!
But it would not made today

Mary, Watch Airplane after this. It's another Classic Comedy 👌.
My favorite as always been the 6th movie, but #5 is a close second. I love Jones so much overall but in the 5th, one of my favorite jokes of all of the movie is when he does the submarine with the jetski. OMG I still laugh at that joke to this day.
please do the 2nd and 3rd too... you can easily skip the rest, but the first three are essential 80s classics....
Police Academy is of a great vintage year for movies... 1984, which also gave us Ghostbusters, Revenge of the Nerds, Karate Kid, Beverly Hills Cop, Gremlins, Footloose, Last Starfighter, Sixteen Candles... and many, many more.
1984 was very significant year in general

Police Academy was one of the first big films that shows a lot of Toronto where I grew up. :) The Blue Oyster Bar is actually a place called The Silver Dollar. About 15 years ago I photographed the band the Tokyo Police Club there for some promos.
Tackleberry - the extreme gun guy - gets better in the sequels. He's one of my favorites throughout the series.
I LOVE this franchise! I agree that the first 4 are by far the best. They influenced my sense of humor and I watch them often.
Yes! I'm looking forward to this one
I always liked the fact that the joke of Hightower's name matching the look. My fave character from the series is Zed, i love his "gas scene".
The most fun I've ever had watching a movie. You have 6 more left to watch.

All Police Academy movies rock the house! --- 5 and 7 are a bit iffy, but hell, if you like the cast, it's just fun to see them again!
Hey Mary, Good to see you again.
Love the whole series honestly
This one is fun but the characters grow in you as the series continues and it’s like seeing old friends again. And you will meet new ones along the way too! Some of the sequels are better than others but they are all worth watching (well… the last one is debatable in that regard, honestly). Hope you’ll reconsider doing them for the channel, you might find you like them better as you go along. 😁
I wonder if they'll ever make another Police Academy movie. If they do, I guess it would be a reboot rather than a direct sequel.
All the sound effects are from him too. Their not being edited in. He was one of the best actors in the Police Academy series.
And there is no editor
Mahoney Macaroni, lol. It was fun rewatching this again.. Thanks
We’ve known each other long enough so you can drop the Australian accent already. Kidding!! It would be funny to see you do a reaction with an American accent though!! You’re great!!
29:12 noooo!!! What? BJ? Wtf🤨 This is a brilliantly hilarious moment! Lassard is actually pondering whether they should shoot back cause it’s Harris as the meatshield😂 even he kinda hates him😂
Lassard plays dumb most of the time but he’s a jackal, his smart moments are some of the best
