  • It's time for a MultiVersus review with the latest alpha winding down! Wonder Woman, Shaggy, Harley Quinn, Bugs Bunny, Iron Giant, Batman, Jake the Dog...the Warner Bros. roster for this game is undeniably impressive, but does the rest of the experience rise to match it? In some cases, yes, others absolutely still need work. Let's get into it!

Thanks for watching everyone! Did you get a chance to play MultiVersus? What do you think of the game at the moment?
Also, heads up that I said it was Batman's forward air and forward tilt that throw the Batarang, but it might actually be neutral air/jab? Then again, there was also an option in the controls to switch those...and I can't actually remember if I enabled it or not...can we get the alpha back so I can check please?

I’m my opinion, that isn’t really needed as matches are 2 stocks instead of 3. I think this is the first platform fighter to have anywhere near the care and polish Smash does. Characters' movesets and animations are not only full of meaningful references but extremely intelligently based on who they are; things like Tom and Jerry's moves all being attempts to hit *each other* are great evidence of the passion for the subject material involved here, and because of that it has the kind of charm you don't see all that often.

Good stuff, your review was the one I was most anticipating because I knew you would be concise, topical, and have a long-reaching philosophy on the things that are annoying and the things that are actually problematic for the game. As a severely color blind person, yep! Spectating these matches can be a headache trying to see what's going on, not just in the UI but also with characters themselves on some very light stages like what I believe is the Adventure Time stage. (I have the same problem but in reverse on dark stages like Dracula's Castle in Smash.) I can't wait to pick this game up when it becomes available!
One thing you didn't touch on (and frankly it wouldn't have fit with this video's theme but I feel the need to point it out because of my perspective) is that because there's a level up system and rewards that go along with it, losing is still fun. I felt the same way in Splatoon until I had all weapons unlocked, but you can lose and still get things, making it a much more positive experience than Quickplay/Elite Smash's "you lost the game, you lose points, try again next time" atmosphere. Makes it a much more enticing casual experience.

You know what’s something all these platform games seem to be lacking that only Smash keeps considering
Adding a lot of detail and life into their stages and backgrounds.
Like, there’s a clear difference in style obviously, but I really wish other platform fighters had stages similar to smash ultimate in terms of how lively and Vivid they feel.
Like hide little details or have some background characters interact or give more movement.

Smash has a few dead stages. For some reason Delfino Plaza is still devoid of Piantas and is an empty ghost town.
I think Scooby's Haunted Mansion is fine, it has a lot of little details and the occasional ghost. The Batcave should have Alfred in the background though; the art for the stage on the loading screen even has him. Treefort is the stage that needs the most work, it feels so flat compared to other stages since it has a 2D background. If they make it more 3D, at least the rolling green hills of the ground, it'd feel closer to the other stages in visual quality. Adding the occasional bee and making Lady Rainicorn 3D would also be good. Trophy's EDGE is also fine; datamines show it's going have more background objects later on.

I have very mixed feelings about this game. The game feels like it has no precision. Like hit/hurt box collision is so inconsistent and teleporty. It feels like a lot of random throwing out moves and hoping they land, rather than real spacing / timing. Also it feels very clunky to me that air attacks just stop all your momentum. Like why am I able to do 8 downairs before touching the ground? Lol

As someone who loves brawlhalla, I'm most interested in how the two games will coexist. There are multiple similarities between the games (f2p format, notable 2v2 focus, using a dodge rather than a shield/block, ect), so there could be a lot of people who play both games. The brawl community as seems very split on their opinion. On one hand, most people seem to prefer the movement of brawl and acknowledge that even in 2v2 brawl is an easier game to process. On the other hand, most players feel that brawl gameplay has gotten a bit stale (a sentiment I somewhat agree with) and are excited to try something new. I guess we'll just have to wait for the full release to find out.

The physics of this game are all over the place. Every character is floaty and I haven’t seen combos extend past two hits. It’s like if every character plays like Brawl Jigglypuff. Smash Bros at least makes it so that your hits give you a predictable “flight path” and not just stop all the momentum to suddenly shift into another angle. Maybe it’s me comparing it too hard to Smash, but how can you not?

Love the positivity and generally agree with everything you said. The only thing I did not fully agree on was the need for more voice lines. I understand that it would be nice but given the amount of effort they have already put into the voice acting, which is arguably more than smash has already, I feel it is bit much asking for more. When I played I payed no attention to the fact that I had heard certain lines over and over, I was just happy how much they felt like the character. I understand the point but I feel like it would be better to ask for a simple button to mute character selection voice lines

I'm going to be honest, something about some of these animations, particle effects, and the way characters move feels a little off to me. It's hard to pinpoint exactly what my issue is but there's something about it a few of them that feels strange and floaty. Admittedly, I have found this to be the case with every 2.5d platform fighter other than smash (which has incredible quality in that regard, nothing else in the genre even comes close). This is however, far better than what I've seen from other smash-competitors in the past thus far. Interestingly enough, I have no such problem with for example, rivals of aether, which despite it's more simplistic art-style has animations and particle effects which feel snappy, responsive, and powerful.

For movement, what's getting you is probably lack of momentum/inertia. When a character jumps, they freeze in place for a bit upon reaching the peak of their jump, but they don't slow down before that or slowly accelerate when they begin falling. This goes beyond jumping and applies to horizontal movement too. This makes movement feel very stiff.

I think sound design is underrated w/voice acting, case in point with "Multiversus vs. Smash".
Multiversus: world-renowned VAs, character-specific interactions. Can make the world feel "lived-in", but can be distracting with repeat quotes.
Smash: minimalist voice lines, only character-specific victory quotes. Risks feeling cheap, or can be immersive without being distracting.

Here's the thing with the platform fighter genre.
Street Fighter 2 released and blew the 2D fighting game genre out of the water. Within 4 years we had Tekken, King of Fighters, Mortal Kombat, and Virtua Fighter, all fighting games on par with SF2 from major (at the time) publishers.
Even if you only count Melee as the first platform fighter with "high production value", being the gold standard for the genre - it's been 21 years and the only other major game publishers to even attempt at the genre seriously have been Sony and Warner Bros.
PSABR had some interesting ideas, but the mechanics left a lot to be desired, and there were some really notable roster absences.
Multiversus is looking good so far but, like... Smash has had DECADES to perfectly refine its artstyle, and animations, and game feel, and UI, and has grown to have possibly the greatest roster of fighters in fighting game history.
Major publishers didn't have a go at making a Smash clone when it was new, and with every passing year it gets harder and harder to actually try to compete.
      🤷‍♀

I will mainly be playing 1v1. But can see myself enjoy 2s aswell.
I can say with confident, that the majority of the fighting games community, want to see a comp scene around 1s.
In this game, i simply want both. And theres no reason to not have it.
And if you're a 2v2 enjoyer and main, thats great. And you will have an amazing time in Multiversus.
I just want to see love for the 1v1 mode for this game in the future aswell. And since the devs really wants whats best for the community... It's really hard to see it's not coming.
Regardless of whats coming for this game, i think we're all in for a hell of a good time.

I got into this test and even got into Tech Test 2 a tiny amount and I think you've kind of explained why it felt so weird and bad to me - it's so aggressively focused on doubles gameplay that it's a detriment to the only mode i'm really going to ever consider playing outside of just finishing battlepass challenges: 1v1.
This is all on top of me already not being the biggest fan to trying to reinvent conventions like ledges and shielding in games like this, I ended up bouncing off Rivals eventually for the same reasons.
I also remember thinking that moves felt overly commital and slow but maybe the problem was the opposite- just low hitstun rather than the moves themselves being super slow. It'd make sense.
Though i'll admit that Tom and Jerry amuse me enough that i'm tempted to just play them nonstop for long periods until that wears thin.

I've played the game for 24 hours now since launch and my early review is it's def worth buying, and I do say buy because if you get the free version from twitch drops you're going to feel paywalled as it will take time to unlock a lot of characters to try them out. You can however try them out offline against the bots but it's not nearly as fun as getting into a custom game with friends doing 1v1's or 2v2's and this is the error we ran into. My friends were subjected to only using 4 of the free characters and 4 player offline lobbies don't grant you access to gaining gold coins to unlock new characters so you're forced to play offline with bots or online against other players with the started characters that you may not particularly enjoy. Otherwise I give it a big 9/10 For Beta Launch! It's worth getting for free and trying it out if you don't mind grinding for the hero's and really feels great to play. Customizing the characters with skins/ emotes and other perks make it feel like your own, and the fact that they're going to be releasing many more new characters in the future gives me a lot of hope that I put my money in the right place.

Maybe it'll improve over time but as it currently stands I'd recommend buying a Switch for Ultimate Smash or, if you can't afford it, grab some emulator and play original smash or melee.

What you described is basically how fighting games work. Some characters will excel in the cons you point out, as others will fall short in the same category. To make every character "feel" better to ones liking would be taking away the idea of identity between each character. The correct perspective is to access the roster and find a toon with pros and cons that you work well with.
Only cons rn would be smoothing out lagging and basic character nerfs and buffs. That really it. Highly competitive and when one understands the fundamentals, they'll succeed. Gg

I don't think that any platform fighter will ever draw my attention quite like Smash, because really the gameplay genre doesn't matter to me nearly as much as the crossover element, and Smash Bros is front-loaded with video game characters that make up both the bulk of my childhood and present life, both of which featured playing video games far above watching movies or cartoons. And since I was always largely a Nintendo kid and am only recently getting into Playstation (almost entirely because of Persona 5), Smash Bros will always hold a special place in my heart that no other potential roster could hope to match, which especially rings true for the platform fighters that focus on their unique mechanics and hold a roster of largely original characters.
I will say though, MultiVersus is coming close to convincing me to play. I've been pretty hooked on comic book properties in the past decade and this roster seems to enjoy DC characters quite a bit, with Harley Quinn being of particular intrigue. I'm hoping at some point they add the Flash. The rest of the gang is pretty hit or miss; I've never been hooked on Looney Tunes, my experience with Scooby Doo is pretty scattershot, and I'm one of the rare freaks of nature that doesn't like Adventure Time or Steven Universe. Plus, I think Arya Stark is an odd addition; while I don't think she's a sour thumb and I do believe Game of Thrones to be large enough to include in a WB crossover, the visual style she's forced to adopt clashes hard with the tone of her home series. Overall none of this was enough to get me interested in the game and for the most part I had even forgotten this was even a thing... until I saw the trailer that revealed the Iron Giant, and my inner child jumped with glee. I'm still not certain of anything just yet, but the fact that they were willing to make him work and they even went the extra mile of showing him alongside his hero Superman, which was a subtle touch to prove they really care about these characters, it might be worth a shot.

I hate the look of Reindog and it’s constant smiling. It looks like a rejected Neopet sperm. Why did Warner Bros feel “Yeah, let’s make a original character and this will be the mascot for our platform fighter featuring out massive franchises”? There’s a way to do cute characters as seen with most Animal Crossing characters or Kirby characters[like Kirby and the Waddle Dees] or Pokémon or Digimon depending on which ones, but Reindog looks horrifying. He creeps me out. Those eyes scare me too. I hate seeing this thing.
