    I think Devin is more against the opulence and grandeur of engagement photos. The pressure and expectation to look perfect, grand poses, and full 'life' seasons that aren't the couple's real life. I get what she means. In India, pre-wedding photos have become an an entire experience. The couple basically shoots their own version of a music video, complete with drones and music.

    My fiancé and I got engaged last month. I took 4 or 5 pictures of us and my ring right after, me with puffy eyes and everything from crying. And that's it. Those mean more to me than any professional photos a few weeks later ever would. And i look forward to taking nice pictures for our invitation and at the wedding.

      I want photos of my kids and family photos by a photographer because I want them in my house on a mantle and/or walls. I want mine printed and scrapbooked. People who just put them on social media, I think is a waste, but there are people who still print photos and put them in their home. I remember taking photos with my siblings and there are fancy pictures of me as a baby... and that was before social media. At my grandma’s house, all these pictures are in the stairwell and over the fireplace. I can’t wait to have the scrapbooks my grandma made to show my kids my childhood through photos and words that my grandma wrote about the events. HECK, I even want to show my kids my awkward phase to tell them that they will grow out of theirs lol. I do not think photos of family and kids are a waste.

      @@adaabeja2061 I agree with you. You should never feel forced to do certain pictures or to post them. A lot of people like to get professional photos just to be able to hang them in their house or use them for decoration. The thing about this though is that they're A LOT cheaper than wedding/engagement photos... even though they're literally the same process. You shouldn't be charged by event.

My ring is $5 on Etsy. Don’t even get me started on rings. We didn’t announce an engagement because we just decided to finally get married and when you’re with someone for 7 years it’s pretty pointless cause everyone important already knows you’re basically engaged. And I’m having a talented friend take pictures the day of the party.

      well, to be fair, she's the only one who's actually married, who experienced the entire process, and now, one of her unmarried co-workers/friends is saying that it's a worthless scam and a waste of money and time and that she doesn't even want to see it on her social media. If Kristen loves her engagement pictures, I'm sure that she holds them very special to her. And honestly, if one of my friends said that she didn't want to see my engagement pictures anywhere and then called it a scam and waste of money, that would really hurt my feelings. Like, those pictures are meant to commemorate a time of intense love and joy: I would absolutely want to share that with people I love and care about. And honestly, if you have an issue of seeing engagement shit on social media, that's a you problem. Wedding can be lavish, or they can be very simple. I don't think it really matters which one it is, as long as the people who are doing it are doing it their way and are really happy about it. And it's not fair to judge people on what they want to do that makes them happy, based on the money they spend. I'm sure everyone has some sort of expensive indulgence. Honeymoons can be an indulgence! My parents didn't honeymoon because they thought it was a waste of money, but they wanted to put money into the wedding because it was important to them and their families to celebrate that joining.

      I thought the same thing- I got engaged two and a half years ago and got married last September; we were broke 20 and 18s year old beings who didn't think we could afford/didn't really care about engagement shoots. Once we started planning our wedding we found a photographer who included engagement photos in his wedding package; so we bit. We spent two isssh hours doing engagement and talking to him getting to know him. We became friends and it was much more personal and enjoyable to have him at the wedding after taking the time to build a connection with him.

  • @ilahjarvis
    @ilahjarvis 5 років тому +199

    Everything related to the wedding ceremony is a scam. Stick the word "wedding" or "engagement" in front of a normal word like "dress", "cake" or photo and watch the price go sky high. We don't need posed photos of what it's like to be engaged. It's all anticipation of being married, which is pretty awesome if I say so.

    • @shelbyb9965
      @shelbyb9965 3 роки тому

      Yes it's more expensive because it's more important and more goes into it. You can reschedule graduation photos but not a wedding. A wedding cake is way more elaborate than any birthday cake I've ever seen. More people are packed into a venue for weddings than retirement parties. There's more effort and/or risk on the vendors' parts because it's one of, if not the most important day of these peoples' lives.

      First of all, most kids don’t have a choice on where they grew up, so if they grew up in the city but they really wanted to grow up in the country they had no choice over that. And it’s not up to you to decide where people want their weddings. if m they grew up in the city and they want to have their wedding in the country then so be it.

Two weeks before the wedding, her fiancé was killed in a car accident. The photos they got for the engagement were the last pictures they have together. I think if you want pictures to immortalize your marriage before it happens, you should. Treasuring moments together isn’t for other people, it’s for the people getting married.

But, don't discredit actual professional photographers by calling engagement photos a scam and not worth the money when most of the time engagement photos are part of the wedding package and real legit photographers are just trying to make a living, just like she is. They spend loads on equipment, education, taxes, insurance. It's pretty insulting of her to call it a scam and say get a friend with a dslr to do it instead. Absolutely agree, I didn't get engagement photos for my wedding because we eloped 4 months later, but people complaining about the cost of a creative service really don't get what goes into it. I just think the whole mentality that you 'have' to do things a certain way for a wedding is utter nonsense, and it's gotten so out of hand. I didn't wear white, we didn't spend tonnes of money, we just invited our parents to city hall, and my best friend is a photographer so she took pics on the day. And guess what? We still ended up happily married at the end of it. Also, Devin saying she doesn't want to see that kind of thing on 'her' Facebook? Unfollow people, or get off social media! Why wouldn't you want to see happy, beautifully taken photos of your friends? I'd rather see those than the insta-influencer 'fire' selfies that they took 200 times to get the right shot before facetuning the crap out of it to sell some laxative tea.

    Love Devin and all the girls of lady like but this reads as very hypocritical. Devin is someone who has done numerous professional photo shoots for Christmas cards, Vacations, and Lingerie. Why throw shade at people who want to have an important moment in their life captured in pictures? You're young, you're in love and you have far greater opportunity to be creative than in the wedding photos themselves. Have at it, if you like! Who cares what anyone else thinks, do what makes you happy! I do agree though that you shouldn't feel pressured to do them. If you can't afford professional ones don't be afraid to ask a creative friend or family member for help as DYI project everything looks great with a instagram filter ; ). Also if you don't want fancy photos or wedding you don't need one. The important thing is the people in your life and if you are engaged you have likely found someone very special. Enjoying time with that person is all that matters.

    I dont take photos or selfies on the daily so having an excuse to take really nice photos that make me feel beautiful, create memories of a fun day and have something really beautiful as a couple to remember why we decided to get married, before actually being married and reflect some of what we love to do together could just make those hard days as a couple just a little easier. A reminder of the days that brought passion and love and why it was there and that it is still there. I'm not married, I've been engaged at one point but honestly. I think this take comes from photos no longer being precious luxury but a daily convenience. Devin would definitely not be talking like this if they were her grandparents' posting their engagement photos from decades ago on FB if they had had the luxury to take them.

    I think the whole thing is symptomatic of a larger problem with people's lives being weighted towards their wedding as soon as they get engaged. They ultimately care more and put more time and effort into their wedding than they do to their marriage. Engagement photos aren't any more of a scam than wedding photos, wedding bands (the musical kind), calligraphers, invitations, tuxedos and wedding dresses. My own engagement was 8 months long, the entire wedding party was 8 people (including my wife & I) and they only found out about it 4 weeks beforehand. The whole day came in at about £1,000 including the casting of our rings, marriage licence fee and dinner. Everyone had a fantastic day because WE GOT MARRIED!

    Not going to lie I literally thought the exact same things Devin did. My now husband proposed to me when we were 20. We both were living paycheck to paycheck so he actually couldn't even get me a ring. Which also meant we couldn't afford engagement photos, save the date, invitations, and the whole shebang. We waited two years before we were finally able to afford a small wedding in Conroe, Texas. My husband's cousin was going to take the wedding photos for us. Not a professional but the thought totally counted. However, a week before the wedding we had a hurricane and had severe flooding. Our venue canceled on us. We scrammed to find a venue in our hometown Tyler. Finally found one and the day before the wedding the hotel where we were going to have the wedding canceled on us due to them having to host hurricane victims. Which totally understand however that forced us to scram again 24 hours prior to the wedding. We were able to find a church and honestly it was the worst experience of my life. The church venue had no AC so everyone was a hot mess. Our photographer was not able to come. A friend took pictures but they were not the best quality and it also took them almost half a year to get them to us. Our wedding guests were only people who were in the wedding party, my parents, his father, and his grandparents, and three cousins. I seriously regret not having taken engagement photos or had someone with more experience take the pictures of our wedding. The pictures I do own honestly make me sad to look at. It may seem a little unnecessary to spend so much money on a photographer but that's such a special day and to have it captured forever is truly priceless.

I had no idea what the couple were like, how they were with each other, how I could act etc so I just took photos like I would with a portrait photograph and it didn’t turn out great. Wedding/engagement photographers are SO underrated and if they do a good job, they’re worth their price rate.

    I was so grateful to our wedding photographer. We called him randomly, and had no idea that he is a world-class photographer. Normally, he needs booking 3-4 years in advance... but, miraculously, he was available for our weekend (he was around the 50th photographer we called, and no one was available). We really couldn't afford it, but decided that photos were going to be our splurge, as our friends and family hail from 5 different continents and we were basically never going to get everyone all together again. Well, he gave us a huge discount, gave us an engagement session for free, and he had such a blast at our simple wedding that he ended up staying the whole night, taking pictures, even though he was only paid to be there until 10pm. I suppose that he isn't at the top for nothing, but to this day we are so very grateful for him, and thought that this vid was an awesome place to share the story.

      A camera used for a wedding day is typically 1500 just for the body, not including a second body and lenses which costs hundreds of dollars. You need different lenses for varying focal lengths and angles/widths of the shots.
      Editing software is a monthly subscription, about 25-50 a month.
      Plus the time of the photographer(s). You are asking someone to be at a strangers wedding for 6-12 hours. This is valuable. This is someone on their feet, not eating, not taking a break hardly, taking photos of you, your family, the venue, getting ready etc. this is a job.
      So, someone does a 12 hour wedding day. That’s probably 1500-2000 photos which they then have to go through, at home, on a separate day, and cull through the photos looking for the best ones. Then you have to edit those hundreds of photos you chose, one by one. You need to go in and edit out pimples, maybe a tree, fix the lighting, etc.
      You’re asking for at least a weeks worth of work on a person for one wedding, one day. They deserve to have that time paid for. It’s an art and it’s valuable.

      I'm actually confused on how people make money with photography anymore. My grandfather was a photographer and I wanted to be one professionally.
      But sadly I feel like with the digital world and everybody having cameras on their phones has made photos almost insignificant because people have so many phones. They barley ever print them out and just keep them on there computer or phone.
      I used to take pictures of everything was my camera. After a while I noticed that everybody was photographers all of a sudden. And I'm 35 so I went from using film to a digital camera.

    • @SeaWatcher22
      @SeaWatcher22 5 років тому +4

      @@lisaromano1188 I know very many successful photographers. Many work multiple jobs to balance out the bills, but consider it worth it to be able to still have a job that they love. It's true photography has shifted since cell phones started having cameras. Film is making a come back both 35mm and Polaroid, but the digital camera rules and yes many people have one now. Think of this phase as when Kodak made the Brownie camera. Suddenly, everyone had one, but it arguably faded. I think it's not that "everyone is a photographer" that's the real issue. I think that with the influx of photos people now have a hard time distinguishing good photography. Sure you can have your friend with a DSLR take your photos, but they really can't compare with a professionals. You pay for the classic training, the compositional eye, the professional editing so you don't come out looking like a doll (we've all seen them on Facebook). It's also nice knowing that a trained professional is handling the files, editing them and preserving them for you in a way that they will last instead of degrading the files. That's truly what most don't get is that everyone can photograph sure, (as a photographer I think that's great!) but not everyone is a photographer.

Also, many photographers include them in the wedding package for free (like Kristin said) because it's the best way to get to know the couple before you are spending an entire 8+ hour day with them! I got married in 1982, way before Facebook, even before Mark Zuckerberg was born, and engagement photos were part of every package when we shopped for a wedding photographer. We ended up having my best friend take the engagement photos because her photos are wonderful, but we had to hire a photographer because she was in the wedding, but the engagement photos were still part of the package we bought from the photographer. We don't take them to upset our friends. We take them for our parents, and grandparents and aunts and uncles and cousins - many of whom are reached most easily these days on Facebook. My son got married last year and pictures were taken and sent out and yes, posted to Facebook for faraway relatives who wanted to see the girl he was marrying. It isn't for you; it's for them.

    I think the thing that all the girls are overlooking is the photographer's side of it and WHY they are expensive. Photography equipment is EXPENSIVE. A good camera will cost anywhere from $350 to $2000 depending on how many bells and whistles you want. Additional lenses also go for about $200+ a pop. Printers are then super expensive, especially if you want to be able to print large format photos. Most photographers have expensive laptops to edit those photos with and they have to pay for the photo suite on Adobe which is about $20 a month. On top of that, they need to pay monthly to have a website so people can look at their portfolio.
    This is why photos are so expensive, you are essentially paying the photographers credit card bill. Some photographers do this full time so they need to actually make a living off of your photos. So yeah, they are really expensive, but you are supporting someone, typically a local person, in your community as if you were buying from a local owned store instead of a national chain.

    • @TransparentLabyrinth
      @TransparentLabyrinth 5 років тому

      If you really want to go there, we could start going into why photography equipment is expensive as well and I guarantee you some of that is inflated at some point due to companies wanting better profit margins.
