SOLO DIVE QUEST - (REMOTE ISLAND)- GREAT WHITE SHARK HOT SPOT, SWIMMING WITH SEALS, MASSIVE PAUA

  • In this episode of Kai down under I embark on a risky solo mission in my family's 5 mtr Stabicraft to a small group of islands about 30 kilometers off the south coast of Bluff in Foveaux strait New Zealand.
    The first location in this video is a spot where it has been common knowledge in my circle to hear of mature Great White Sharks patrolling.
    Growing up as kids we were always told about this place and those that dared to dive there had a bit of a screw loose.
    I never thought to dive there untill a friend told me there was Paua in that area that belonged in the movie Jurrasic Park and you could get them without even looking for them, he wasn't wrong!!!
    My plan was to stay close to shore and within a quick dash to the boat if need be, the plan was to stay shallow and not push depth but the shallows was were the paua were at anyway, I was suppose to get in and out straight away but ended up making friends with some Seals that guided me around their home.
    Moving on to the second spot at a different Island (if you know you know)
    I harvest 5 Greenbone (Butterfish) and ignore Blue Cod and Trumpeter to shoot my first Tarakihi.
    All my editing is done via my smartphone with a simplistic downloaded app which limits what I can do editing wise and also restricts upload quality. The highest resolution I can roll with is 1080p bit all my camera and drone gear has the ability to shoot in 4K so if anybody can point me in the direction to a new laptop capable of fast and efficient editing I'd really appreciate it.
    Before I finish up this caption I just wanted to send out a Safety message to all my viewers and audience.
    I do not want to set a bad example by diving alone in this video.
    In no way do I think diving alone is a safe thing to do, however there are certain measures that you can take to minimize harm and risks. I chose to do this mission alone and fully understand the dangers and risks being taken, I'm old enough and ugly enough to understand these actions can come with fatal consequences but I choose to live life like everyday will be my last.
    When diving it is best practice to.....
    - check weather conditions, swell, tides, wind
    - research your dive location (local knowledge is always helpful)
    - always dive with a buddy
    - have the correct gear for the job
    -dont push your depth (dive within your comfortable limits)
    - Rest times between dives, (make sure you are resting 2-3 times the amount of time you are breath holding
    - let somebody know where you are diving ( 2 contacts are even better)
    The best advice I can give if you want to start diving is to get educated on the fundamentals, technique, gear and the science behind everything.

    Oh man, everything about this video is awesome. The attitude, the respect of the ocean, the adventure, the use of te reo, the tunes.... the list goes on. I really want to try diving but still don't have a dive belt or fins. Also, don't want to do it by myself. I'm up in Ōtepoti. I was down in Motupōhue a few weeks back. Helping out in the hōhipera. I tried to catch some kaimoana with a rod but didn't get anything. It's whole different world under the water. A whole different game too. You can pick what you take. Anyway, you got a new subscriber here, mate. Chur.

    You live in a paradise. In Northern California, our red abalone populations crashed a few years ago when the kelp all died off. It's a mess. Too many people, not enough resources, warming waters. How are the kelp beds in New Zealand these days? I've read this phenomenon is occurring in other parts of the world as well.
    I've dived the South Island, but mostly around Akaroa and Kaikoura. Got some decent paua, some crays, and some blue moki (great sashimi!). Such a nice place. Can't wait to go back.
    I figured out from Google maps exactly which coves you were diving, but don't worry, I'll keep quiet :)

    • @kaidownunder7870
      @kaidownunder7870  2 роки тому

      Hey appreciate that bro!!
      That sucks about your Abalone stocks, I heard they are massive in Cali? The kelp is pretty good here, there's a reasonably low population in the south where I live so it's quite plentiful.
      I haven't dived Kaikoura but planning on getting there one day.
      Haha, if you've done your homework on maps then you deserve to dive wherever you want bro, I do the same🙌🙌🙌

    • @andrewbland625
      @andrewbland625 2 роки тому

      @@kaidownunder7870 Yes, the red abalone in California are the largest species in the world. 10" shells are not uncommon. But the fishery is done. All wiped out by starvation in just a few years. There are some left but it'll take decades - if ever - to return to the abundance of a few years ago.
      Those paua are special. Different flavor from our reds, arguably prettier shells too. Anyway, enjoy and Merry Christmas.

As long as it weighs nothing, it scores!!! Farts that weigh anything will be red carded. Hey cuz I'm in Bluff building the new wharf. Watched a couple of your vids to get an idea of dive spots. Got shouted a trip on the Mana the other day. He took us across to get some pauas. I've been free diving maybe 10years. Never see a shark. My Mrs was in the water with me and saw a juvenile white pointer (slightly bigger than me) come in on me. She said it got within a couple of meters and turned away. She swam up tapped my on the shoulder frantically with her eyeballs nearly popping out her wee head an pointed. I turned to see it swimming away. I would have never seen it if she wasn't there. Put the s$&ts up me hard and let's just say that was the end of that dive. Not sure I'm too keen on hopping in the water down here again bro😔.

    This is the tikanga of why you shouldn’t eat while out in the moana.
    Our Tupuna, before heading out on Tangaroa. Would do a karakia to bestowe tapu and protection on you and your waka before going into the realm of Tangaroa, when you are under tapu, you shouldn’t consume food as you are doing tapu work(Taking tangaroas children, for tumatauengas children to eat). And eating is also a way of “whakanoa” or clearing the tapu on you, So.. In context, if you’re going into Tangaroa, taking his children, while under karakia tapu, then eating tangaroas children, in his whare. Is deemed quite disrespectful. And gets rid of the protection tapu placed on you by karakia.

    • @kaidownunder7870
      @kaidownunder7870  2 роки тому +1

      Chur bro, definitely understand the tikanga and am definitely all about respecting others commitments to their traditions, each to their own aē🙌
      My intentions are never to disrespect anyone but I do have my own thoughts and ways of what I consider respecting our taonga and Moana too🤙

    • @tp3musicproductions979
      @tp3musicproductions979 2 роки тому +1

      Just educating you a little bit on where some of that korero of not eating while out on Tangaroa comes from. Tikanga is tikanga my bro, there is no each to their own, if you understand it choosing to go about it another way isn’t respecting tikanga, it’s called ignorance.

    • @kaidownunder7870
      @kaidownunder7870  2 роки тому

      @@tp3musicproductions979 I guess I don't follow "tikanga" then, let me explain to you why..
      I wouldn't be true to myself if I did for many reasons and being true to who I am is an important value 🙌
      I never had any body teach me to harvest, I literally started on my own and just went for it , I had no mentor, no leader and no authority to learn from.
      Although I was not taught any tikanga from the start, as my diving has progressed I have read up on it pretty good and watched a lot of videos of other people doing Karakia or explaining things they do or do not permit when they do mahi Kai. @Brothersoftangaroa is a good example of those that follow tikanga and I have a huge amount of respect for those fullas.
      A few other people I have dived with have done a Karakia for us too and explained some of their ways to me too which I though was pretty cool.
      I wouldn't usually eat Kaimoana out there but in this case forgetting my lunch I think Tangaroa would forgive me if he was a rational thinking entity, no Kai in the belly equals one of Tangaroas kaitiaki low on energy and unable to make good desicions.
      I can't korero Maori which is something I'm not too proud of but I'm slowly trying to develop it with books and converse with my tamariki.
      Myself not being a very spiritual person don't do Karakia before a dive, I wouldn't even no what to say to be honest so instead when I'm sitting on the rocks at the waters edge, with all my gear on knowing I'm about to step into the danger zone and take from the universe, I take time for a small moment to raise my consciousness to a higher level because I know that in reality the only person out there I can count on for protection is myself and whoever is with me, no amount of prayer or karakia can save me from danger, only action can do that so I draw on my knowledge and experience to guide me.
      I would say even though I may not follow tikanga like others do, I have a tremendous amount of respect for the Moana and the taonga I take for my Whanau. That's all I meant by each to their own🤙
      I may be ignorant to what people call tikanga, but I'm at peace with my own kaupapa and my respect is expressed in a different way
      My connection to the Moana is solid!!!🌊🤜🤛

      We as Tangata, are not the Kaitiaki of Tangaroa my bro. We take from the moana, and give back nothing.. we express our gratitude in feeding off his children, his uri. BUT I’ll give you some pūrakau to put In your kete, help give you an idea on why there are Lores surrounding the moana.
      after the great separation of Rangi and Papa(literally the beginning of time).
      Tumatauenga became the god of mankind after he mated with hine titama(the first women tāne mahutas daughter he made up of clay, previously hineahuone) they then created mankind. Tane got angry and sent hineahuone into the depth of Tangaroa and down into rarohenga, which then she became hinenuitepō. Tumatauenga was not happy and declared war on Tangaroa and Tane and ever since then they have been at conflict and mankind(the descendants of Tū) still till this day continue to take and punish Tāne and Tangaroa for what they did. literally.
      This is just a sum up, but it’s a whole wananga in itself.
      I understand what you’re saying bro, and ignorance is not a bad thing, especially when you haven’t had the opportunity to learn Māori Lore. But Kia kaha e hoa and I’m definitely NOT attacking you, just feeding you some Matauranga to help fill your baskets of knowledge. ONLY IF IT RESONATES TO YOUR HIGHER CONSCIOUSNESS. ngā mihi.
