In May 2019, the Belgium Naval & Robotics consortium, composed of Naval Group and ECA Group, was awarded the contract to supply twelve mine-hunting vessels to the Belgian and Dutch navies. Equipped with around 100 drones, constituting approximately ten drone systems (toolboxes), six ships are destined for the Belgian Navy, while the other six will be delivered to the Dutch Navy.
Belgium Naval & Robotics, thanks to Naval Group’s recognized expertise, offers a 2800-ton militarized ship specialized in mine warfare with military characteristics (acoustic and electromagnetic discretion, shock resistance) perfectly adapted to the operational use targeted by the Belgian and Dutch navies. In particular, this vessel incorporates an launch and recovery system for ECA Group’s Inspector 125 unmanned surface vehicles (USV). This innovative, robust and reliable system ensures the safety of operators and maneuvers to protect the ship, the USV and its payloads, while offering a high level of mission availability.
The drone systems on board these innovative vessels are the latest generation of drones developed by ECA Group over the past four years. They are integrated into the C2 MCM Umisoft system connected to the Naval Group’s I4drones® system to form the mine-warfare mission system integrated into the ship’s combat system.
The solution includes A18-M autonomous underwater vehicles (AUV), T18-M towed sonars and Mine Identification & Destruction Systems (MIDS) composed of SEASCAN and KSTER-C remotely operated vehicles (ROV). All these drones can be operated autonomously from the USV Inspector 125. The drone system also includes unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and influence sweeps.
The program provides for the supply of drone systems that can also be projected. Containerized and equipped with handling and communication systems, mine-hunting drone systems can be airlifted and deployed directly from the coast without a ship.

Congratulations on what looks to be an Outstanding addition to naval warfare.
It appears to be much easier to launch and retrieve than the one in a YT Video the USN LCS was launching from the stern. My thought then was to hang the device from a davit, and lower it from Over The Side (OTS). While there are safety issues in doing that, it was more of a thought to eliminate the difficulty the LCS was having in relatively calm to near Flat Seas, from the stern.

Looks like a very modern and optimised ship! But I see some self defense vs land/sea targets, but nothing vs aerial threats?
With knowledge from 2023, without air defence these ships will be destroyed within first days of a conflict
The current ones are getting quite old, so I'm not surprised.
The Netherlands has a nice, albeit a bit too small navy, capable of world-wide operation. The Dutch have a separate coastguard.
The Belgian navy consists of two second hand ships of the Dutch navy and a few smaller craft like these. It also functions as their coastguard.
It's nice to see them work together on this project.
Belgian-Dutch Navy cooperation goes far beyond this programme. Belgium and the Netherlands are also ordering a newly designed class of 4 frigates (under mostly dutch supervision) to replace the Karel Doorman Class (the 'second hand ships' you're mentioning, of which the Dutch and Belgian navies currently have 2 each). They also have an integrated command structure, and train together a lot and can function as one navy. (a bit like the commonwealth navies) Belgium doesn't have that much coast to cover and our EEZ is rather tiny (though heavily utilised). Coast guard duties are executed by the 2 Belgian Navy patrol boats Castor and Pollux (P901 & P902), but also by the police maritime patrol boat SPN-9 and the Customs enforcement vessel Zeeleeuw. This is plenty for the small area they need to cover.
@@mariusdufour9186 Hello from Dublin Ireland🇮🇪🇪🇺 3 of your ships were docked in Ireland last weekend including MRV Karel Doorman Ireland is looking spend big on our navy over the next 10 years we want to buy a new build MRV amd we are also looking at frigates and submarines we may buy the Karel Doorman second hand MRV it's only 7 years old or we may give a contract to the Netherlands to build a new MRV in Rotterdam rather then giving it a contract to a British Firm because of Brexit we are also looking at Navantia in Spain and Naval Group in France we also buying a Radar System from Lockheed Martin and are looking at Either F16 Vipers Rafale Jets from France or the Gripen E from Sweden
@@woohoohaha7607 Are you referring to the Dutch-Belgian frigate class called Karel Doorman or the actual Dutch navy ship HNLMS Karel Doorman, which somewhat confusingly is not a Karel Doorman-class frigate but a support ship for amphibious operations? Because it's the support ship that is only 7 years old, not the frigates. The Karel Doorman class (or M-class) frigates are over 30 years old. That's why they are being replaced.
Safe handling up to sea state 5? That's normal summer operation levels but what about winter? Sea State 8 is closer to the normal operating mark

Surely the video should have shown clearer pictures of the final disposal of the mine, do they need to blow up a single drone or UUV for every mine or does this drone can take out a mine each time at a safe distance? the video is not clear at all on how is the mine finally disposed.

The most important thing is that a drone worth more than 70,000 euros is destroyed along with a cheaper mine instead of having a device for attaching a ring charge mine to a cable that would be a small amount of explosive charge, 5 to 10 minutes after it is attached to the cable or chain holding mine, after the drone left for a safe distance, it would interrupt it and the mine would pop up. On the surface of the water, it can easily be destroyed using small-caliber guns or picking up a piece of dynamite. And bottom mines are cheaper to destroy in a similar way using flexible cord charges with waste. They have repulsive buoyancy and do not slide far from the land of the mine. The principles are the same, a temporary delay in detonation after separation from the transporter. I think it would be much cheaper and with the same result. 70,000 euros is a decent car.
It’s one big scam, the Dutch should never buy their ships from France, we can build our own! It’s a scam bij the Belgium and France gouvernement! Let this be a lesson to the Dutch Ministry of Defence!

Do you have a source for the price of the Kster C? I have never found one, all i have read is it was a to be low cost and disposable. One thing is for sure drones are much cheaper than before, even terrorists use them, and certainly cheaper than a frigate or a diver's life.

I am somewhat concerned and disappointed, that the ship will have zero AA.
I'm not talking of SM2, SM6, or Aster-15 /30,
but *some* self-defense capability in missile form. And perhaps anti-submarine warfare capability.
2.700 tons is well into corvette class.
The Bofors 40mm gun, is also completely new, and will likely be specific to these vessels only.
Finally, I'm not sure, but it seemed like the idea is to blow up a UV for every mine. a very capable solution probably, but an expensive approach to be sure.
Well you could give the crew some stinger missiles, that’s what the (of course smaller) German minehunters have additionally to their 27mm MLG.
It's only mission is to remove mines. Compared to other MCM (Sandown & Avenger class) it is well armed with 40mm Bofors and a few 50cals (12.7mm). This ship does not operate alone, there are other ships which provide cover and which are better suited for these roles.
Adding all this armament would greatly increase cost and size of ship for a half baked result. Adding missiles is not enough, you need radar and command center, VLS, etc... and for ASW you need hull mounted sonars, topedos etc.. at the end of the day you have a frigate.
There are a variety of AUV, some for search and identify and other disposable for destruction like Kster C. No clue what the price of a Kster C is, all i have read said it was low cost.

Let's face facts , the best thing and course for the future of both our armed forces would be to fuse the armies of Belgium , The Netherlands and Luxembourg into 1 army. Buy ourselves a respectable navy together and not just the orders that have been made to this day but additional ones so for example the Belgian navy can have more then just 2 frigates and minesweepers but also get 2 destroyers and maybe even an attack sub with the expertise from the Dutch having them already. Air force wise we are both well underway with the F35 , NH 90 , and new A400M. We just need a good attack helicopter to replace the aging fleet and we are 90% done. Ground forces need the most work with buying the new Jaguar and Griffon is a nice start for Belgium but the Netherlands leed the way again. We should enter the French/German program for the MBT multi functional hull for the next gen iav and mbt, AA and artillery. By doing that and the fact our paratroop divisions and special forces are being reequipped we can have a nice army again.

Luxembourgh formally doesn't have a real army. (they rely on Belgium for this)
The Dutch & Belgian navies & airforces already co-operate (same types of minesweepers, tended to in Belgium; same types of Frigates, tended to in the Netherlands; same types of aircraft).
The Netherlands will very strongly pull the US card (buy from US manufacturer; the Netherlands is quite Atlantic in their look on things, see also the F35 & pushing Belgium to buy it); and just because we would collaborate more with NL, doesn't mean we'd suddenly have destroyers, or attack submarines. That would require massive €€€ investments.
At a time where we have the corona-virus, and the resulting economic impact, we'll be paying for the F35's, the Griffon & Jaguars you mentioned (NB: the Netherlands picked different options, including the Boxer vehicle), these new sweepers, and the upcoming new 'medium' (small) frigates. The Netherlands are also faced with replacement costs for their submarines. Neither Belgium nor the Netherlands will be putting the funding that sort of further expansion (destroyers, more submarines) would require, into the military in the coming 5 years. I'd also question the Belgian military need, for anything larger than a big frigate.
We have no need for Arleigh Burke sizes of ships.
NB: in terms of attack helicopters, we never got rid of and replacements for, the Agusta helicopters.
There's simply no budget.
And if there was budget: we're downsizing the number of people in the army. Who's going to crew a destroyer, a submarine, .. ?
When & where would you deploy Belgian MBT's? We're going (have already gone) completely off tracks fyi, that's a strategic decision. Check our military inventory, and check what's getting added. NO TRACKS.

So we'll not be getting MBT's unless the strategy gets fully revised to include lighter tracked vehicles too, which I don't see happening tbh.
I do agree however, on far stronger land-based AA, and some (ffs, self propelled!) artillery, would be good additions. But those can be on wheels too in our context.

A horrible kick k in the balls of the Dutch /Belgian naval industries. Obviously brown envelppes were exhanged between Belgiands and French. The Dutch should really get closer to the German and Danish navies.
