Thank you!!! My girlfriend has been trying to convince me to ditch my 1930s veneer mahogany buffet and China cabinet that are in pristine condition. She told me at the very least you should paint it with chalk paint. I am so glad you saw the value in this piece! It helps me commit to the pieces that I've inherited. I will continue to mix them in with a few contemporary pieces and artwork, but I am not getting rid of them. I will continue to mix them in with a few contemporary pieces and artwork, but I am not getting rid of them to buy a cheap substitute, or painting them something trending.
That mix of antique furniture with modern art and decor is SUPER on trend right now! If you want to paint, paint. But if you don’t, there’s no pressure ❤️ whatever makes you feel happy in your space is the right choice.
Oiy!!! Chalk paint? On your 1930s piece? That would be a recognizable regret the moment the first coat of that was brushed on. Even she would see it. The recovery time might last longer than your relationship. 😯 Continue to integrate your inherited treasures with things that you love to make your home fabulous! The style is eclectic and as long as you don't overcrowd things, it will be unique and wonderful!!! 😀 Hubby and I inherited pieces from the 1800s to mid-century modern. Plus, the pieces that he built himself, when we got married in the 90s (beautiful wood, simple). I do the art. It works.
The dresser turned out just beautiful. It would’ve been heartbreaking to see that beautiful old girl painted. The tiny little signs of age only make it that much more unique. We should all look so good at ninety years old!
What a gorgeous piece that just looks extra sophisticated with the simple hardware. There’s enough going on with that beautiful veneer and turned leg to make a statement. Love it!
I love the final result. I love when a piece is in good enough shape you can just spruce it up. Excellent job. And I like the pulls not detracting from the wood wood grain too.
Amazing example of restoration of bringing an old piece back to life. So glad you brought it back to its natural color and keeping the original knobs.👍
This beautiful piece, and your obvious reverence for the process and the outcome, were very engaging. I've always loved watching your videos, and this one was especially poignant. Thanks for sharing your adventure with this lovely old gal. She's beautiful.
There’s nothing like a beautiful piece of mahogany furniture! I have several pieces and I just love them. Mahogany is no longer used in furniture making bc it’s so scarce! Great job on restoring her to her former glory.....and didn’t have to worry about bleed through🙌🏻 Thank you for sharing 😊kim
Beautiful. I’m so glad you stained it instead of painting it. I think try for more $$$. It’s a beautiful antique or vintage piece that has been refinished to last another century for sure.
What a masterpiece you've created, I truly love it. My father and grandfather both had great carpentry skills and passed on their love of wood to me. It's so satisfying to sand down a piece and treat it with a preservative to bring out the woodgrain. And am I the only woman here that is so proud of women like you Kate, that prefer doing something creative and inspiring to women that are sadly just obsessed with their looks?
Bravo! Such a great job. I did not know that if you use oil based stain it was possible to wait 3 days and use water base top coat. That is a great tip. Thank you for another lovely project!
Thank you so much for saving this piece. I love painted furniture, but I also love the beautiful wood and some of the old pieces and you save this one. ❤️
I love the color and the depth and the grain, it's gorgeous. My family did some camping in a provincial park in Ontario, near Superior. We loved it, were based in Michigan at the time. Beautiful area.
Really gorgeous, my husband showed me how to fix the sanding mistake on the drawer ,use a furniture marker it will fill it in soo much better . His are professional grade as he's a finish carpenter and woodworker..... Good luck on this piece!! Gorgeous work
Now that is my preference for almost all of the flips I see on UA-cam. This dresser/buffet is absolutely gorgeous...and you going to 300 & 400 grit, it's nice to see someone (you) put so much love and care into the restoration of what will soon be a cherished
That turned out gorgeous. You're right sometimes you need to just embrace the wood. You did a wonderful job. And that little sanding boo boo and any other little imperfections are just fine. It's an old piece and it's not going to be perfect. But you made it nearly perfect! Great job. I have a number of old pieces in my home, a 1938 bedroom set that belong to my in laws. I would never put paint on that it's too beautiful.
Awesome restoration! The sanding booboo's gives the piece a sense of age to the revamped finish. Unintended distressing I think looks more realistic. Have a great weekend Katie!
Red Mahogany is fantastic! Bought a piano that had been refinished with it back in the 90s and have loved it ever since. It's not really as red as it appears here when wet, a very neutral colour that would suit any kind of decor.
YES!!! This is beautiful! I do like wood, often, it's a travesty to cover up beautiful pieces with paint. I also love the burl... Yep, keep saving the paint for the pieces that could only improve with covering them up.
That’s such a beautiful piece it looks so classy the only thing I would have done was stain the side and bottom edges of the drawer fronts it’s a ocd thing lol no offence meant I really enjoy watching you work so inspiring
It is nice to see a refinished project sans paint. I have some beautiful oak pieces handed down to me that just need some clean up to restore the beauty so this was so helpful for me and I am ready to take them on. I like that you kept the knobs. My guess is that they were glass knobs originally? As usual an inspiration. Thanks Sensei Katie, from your loyal You Tube follower. .
It turned out so pretty 😍. I'm learning so much from watching you. I have a china cabinet at home that I want to refinish and looking at your tutorial videos have helped me in giving me ideas. Thanks 😊
Your work is extremely inspiring!! You make me want to flip all my furniture!! Like all of it lol. Also love how honest you are about the process and the boo-boos ❤️
Your video came in perfect timing! I am starting a refinishing project on a solid mahogany wood dresser set and I am planning to use the same Red Mahogany stain. I was worried the stain would not look as red as the original, but now I see that it will be perfect! Nice!
Totally agree! There are pieces in my home that I haven’t touched! I especially don’t like to purchase already painted furniture either. I’d rather fix it myself.
I love the work you do and I jist want to say that when you are using and random orbital sander you fo not have to work in the direction of the grain...the sander does the work in any direction with no scratches against the grain... awesome jib on that dresser.
Thankyou for the tips on sanding with the orbital! I’ve noticed some swirl marks which really bothered me. I’ve been going from 80 to 120 to 220...Im going to try a more gradual increase on grits to see if that helps!!🤞🏼
I had this same piece but mine had more damage than yours. I wound up bleaching the drawers and painting the body a gray color. It turned out to be one of my best pieces. I absolutely love how yours turned out too!
This piece is stunning again! I love the legs on it. I think the black knobs are the perfect juxtaposition. Also, I love that you were spraying the poly in a dress! 🙂
It IS a masterpiece! Just for reference, I had a very similar set - armoire, 3-drawer chest, and vanity - and the pulls were solid brass teardrop. It was my own bedroom set bought straight from a shipping container from England. I didn’t refinish furniture then. I could never get the burl wood conditioned well enough. It was like a sponge!
Painting over wood has a bad rap here in youtube but you know how to paint a piece properly and do a wonderful job. This one without paint just show that you know what is best for every piece
This turned out gorgeous! Every once in awhile when I accidentally sand through veneer at the edges and use a traditional oil based stain, I have found that if I use a matching oil based
I have a similar dresser that I've had for maybe 50 years and it was considered old when I bought it at a St. Vincent de Paul thrift shop in Boston for probably $20. I tried to get a lower price ($20 was a lot then at a thrift store) but I knew it was a quality piece when I saw the joint construction. It's also missing the original mirror so it has 2 small holes, but that never bothered me. It's 50" wide with three drawers on the top then two full width drawers (no burl). The top three have brass knobs; the bottom 2 have pulls. The brass is very subtle as it's very tarnished. Even the insides of the drawers are beautifully finished. At some point I stripped some of the varnish off the face of the drawers giving them a slightly lighter and flatter look. I have dragged this bureau around on many moves, but it has certainly held up. Wouldn't dream of painting it.
Beautiful ! I love the look of pieces that are just refinished. I have to let a piece "talk to me" and tell me if I should or should not paint. Many times, I don't because I think it decreases the value. Thanks for the information on the sand paper used. Thanks !!
I feel like I say this on most of your videos but THANK YOU for being respectful of the work that originally went into these furniture pieces. People don't realize that many of the UNPAINTED originals can't be recreated now because of craftsmanship and because the material (woods) simply aren't available anymore. If I had had to watch you paint burlwood I may have wept. I love that you not only respect the piece and its history but also educate others to do so as well. Funny not funny story... My father had a large collection of burlwood stored in our woodshed for a number of years with the intent to do the wood finishes in our home custom... His evil horrific gf one day weirdly decided to be "helpful" and cut the firewood that he "never seemed to get around to chopping" and chopped the entire pile into chunks. 😳☹️
Wow! This piece is absolutely gorgeous. So glad it wasn't painted. With this type of wood beauty that was the right decision.
I’m glad you agree ❤️ thank you so much for watching today!
It was great to see you give new life to a classic piece by enhancing the wood rather than painting it. The end result is beautiful!!!

It is important, sometimes to resist well intended, but misguided, friends. Well done.
Ditch the girlfriend

It is NEVER heartbreaking to paint. It's a piece of wood for crying out loud. People act like it is a human being.
What a gorgeous piece that just looks extra sophisticated with the simple hardware. There’s enough going on with that beautiful veneer and turned leg to make a statement. Love it!
I love that you stained the dresser..Hands down you are one of the Best furniture flippers!! 👏👏👏
Love that you are saving these old pieces with stain for the good old stuff.
I love the final result. I love when a piece is in good enough shape you can just spruce it up. Excellent job. And I like the pulls not detracting from the wood wood grain too.
Yes, it is a masterpiece. Bravo on showing us how to 'not paint' some pieces but still give them beauty
I’m so glad you enjoyed ❤️

Oh my gosh...this would have bleed like CRAZY 😳 thanks for watching today Kimberly ❤️
I just love how thoroughly you explain every step. Every project. Every video. Yours is truly a Masterclass. :)
I so love that you appreciated the beauty of this piece and brought it back to life.
What a fine gentleman he is! Well done helping him maintain his dapper nature, Katie!
The sanding boo boo just adds to its story. I love it!
She's a beauty! Wonderful job on restoring this piece.
Just gorgeous! That wood was too beautiful to paint and I can't believe how well the top turned out!!
Beautiful. I’m so glad you stained it instead of painting it. I think try for more $$$. It’s a beautiful antique or vintage piece that has been refinished to last another century for sure.
Like that you kept it original. Very pretty!!
No paint is good every now and then when you come across a beautiful piece! 🔥 stunning
Simply gorgeous! The black knobs look great against the beautiful wood.
Love how you enhanced this dresser’s beauty. Stunning as always Katie..
Thank you so much ❤️

Beautiful. That is a perfect size dresser;the 3 drawer ones can be used in any rooms. I wouldn't be selling that one! Sandi
Bravo! Such a great job. I did not know that if you use oil based stain it was possible to wait 3 days and use water base top coat. That is a great tip. Thank you for another lovely project!
This was a great gem for me as well!!!
I love how you have so much respect for the pieces you are working on.
This dresser is simply gorgeous. Great work!
Thank you so much for saving this piece. I love painted furniture, but I also love the beautiful wood and some of the old pieces and you save this one. ❤️
Stunning. Terrific decision, outstanding skills.
It's beautiful. You did exactly the right thing for the dresser.
I love the color and the depth and the grain, it's gorgeous.

So gorgeous! I always enjoy hearing your thoughts / creative process re: each piece. It helps me to see the potential in pieces as well...
Lol! I’m so glad you understand my furniture weirdness 😂 a lot of the time I feel like I’m not making and sense!
Good decision to keep the original knobs! Love them!
Oh wow, this piece is stunning.
Thank you 😊
I’m not sure I’d be able to give her up! Great job. ❤️❤️👏👏
Great job! Wonderful to see this piece renewed in its original stain. X
Beautifully done. Thanks for letting us watch.
Wow... That dresser is gorgeous!!
Absolutely beautiful. I wish I was as beautiful as this dresser. :)

I’m glad to see you saved the dresser as is. Some veneer is too pretty to cover.
Another stunning piece! You are a good teacher, Katie.

Stain on a gel I can “paint out” the boo boo with an artist’s brush and feather in the stain. It doesn’t look perfect but it makes it less noticeable
It’s not all noticeable unless you’re looking for it so I wasn’t too concerned.

Wonderful. My guess was to sell it for $595, painted it would be $425.
I'm curious how much it went for 🤔
Soooo beautiful!!!!!
Beautiful beautiful beautiful

I think it looks beautiful.
Thank you for not sanding the burled veneer! I was holding my breath lol Now back to watching the video.
What a awesome job Katie! I love it ❤️
Thanks Pam ❤️
stunningly beautiful.
