  • Ketogenic therapy has a wide range of applications, from type 2 diabetes to psychiatric conditions like major depression, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia. Many non-communicable diseases can be traced to metabolic dysfunction, and medical keto is a powerful intervention that can repair metabolism and restore health.
    As awareness of the therapeutic potential of a medical keto diet grows, more patients are increasingly interested in exploring this type of metabolic therapy. However many clinicians may not be familiar with the nuances of implementing a medical keto diet. This video aims to provide insight into
    - The difference between a keto diet and ketogenic therapy
    - The distinction between ketosis is not the same as ketoacidosis
    - Over a hundred years of research on medical keto for epilepsy, demonstrating the neurological impact, safety, and efficacy of ketogenic therapy
    Join Dr. Scher as he explores these topics and more to better support patients with this promising therapy that has a growing evidence base for both physical and psychiatric conditions.

    My mom has bipolar and her doctor doesn’t have faith in her success doing it! I think this her only chance of battling her mental disorder and professional health care provider is obtuse.
    I wish more doctors would stop worrying about their position as main stream doctors and embrace the truth which is sprouting up everywhere!!!

    Sorry but every single person should be in ketosis it’s our natural state for optimal health ❤❤❤

    Great timing for us
    we’re frustrated that our care team has no interest in ketogenic therapy.
    A 7 minute video is short enough that I can hold them down for that long for them to watch it 😂

    I think an interesting video would be toward nurses. I"m a cardiac nurse and end up fighting with my residents who balk at the idea of a keto diet. Now I just go around the argument and give them 3 research studies during their rounds with the attending who typically makes them read them. Ive converted a few but the struggle is real. I see psy patients, seizure disorders, alzheimers, bariatric patients and after an inital check them for a "wanting to learn" eval I slowly share my story and see how they respond. Most dont have the interest in changing their diet. But those that do I slip them resources and tell them my name is "Frank" so I dont get fired.

    Should people with family dyslipidemia and hypercholesterolemia (and some plaque) be on ketogenic diet?

      Absolutely! Just transition slowly to avoid possible nasty issues!

      That's difficult to answer with a "yes" or "no." It depends on what that person's health goals are. But simply having FH isn't an absolute contraindication to ketosis. It may require more careful monitoring, but it can still have similar metabolic and psychiatric benefits.

    I got extremely depressed and tired doing keto after 2 weeks.I was looking online and they said it might take 4-8 weeks to get adapted. Something about serotonin and carbs. It was really difficult and I stopped. I’m going to try more low carb and maybe transition to keto after. Maybe that will help me.

      I tried keto but the adaptation phase was too much for me, I did low carb (100g) and intermittent fasting for a few months and then tried keto again, has been working amazingly for me this time around

      @@Philush97 thanks for the reassurance. This is what I will be doing. I wonder sometimes if the anti-depressants screwed my natural serotonin production. I was hoping keto would allow me to live without medication and the other benefits it could give me.

      Yup, take 6 mos to transition if you have to. And take electrolytes daily. Took me a loooong time but now I can be zero carb all day. (Carnivore which is extreme keto).

    I would like a keto diet sheet. I think when I hear percentage of protein talked about I get lost.
    I have b12 deficiency and my GP says lots of protein. I am on 2 monthly shots of hydroxycobalim.
    However I need to lose weight and improve my mental health.
    I do fast until lunch or 4pm most days. But I have an ulcer which causes acid reflux.
    Insomnia is an issue as well.
    Most dietitians here have no clue about keto diets.
    I am on no other medication.

    We would really appreciate knowing if, having commenced a low-carb, higher fat diet but not yet in ketosis, potentiation might still occur? The person is feeling sleepier and is more withdrawn but states they have no other symptoms.

    • @metabolicmind
      @metabolicmind  17 днів тому +1

      We have heard many examples of medication potentiation. It certainly can happen in ketosis, but mechanistically, it could happen as someone transitions into ketosis as well. It is important to work with a prescribing clinician to monitor for medication potentiation.

    Dr Sher, I suspect you made this comment just to assuage the unenlightened audience but I am curious whether you have evidence to support your statement that "Of course not everyone should be in ketosis".

    • @metabolicmind
      @metabolicmind  19 днів тому +2

      I guess what I should have said is not everyone "needs" to be in ketosis to achieve their health goals. Thanks for helping me clarify.
