Dr. Bret Scher, a cardiologist and lipidologist, discusses the therapeutic benefits of nutritional ketosis, emphasizing its potential to treat various medical conditions beyond weight loss, including type 2 diabetes and mental health disorders. He advocates for a shift in perception, viewing ketosis not merely as a diet but as a significant medical intervention. Scher highlights the need for education and proper clinical supervision in administering ketogenic therapy and addresses the importance of protein intake and the management of potential side effects.

I am carb addicted. I LOVE sweets, pizza, chips and breads. However, I don’t like illnesses, going to the doctor or taking meds. I have been on low carb for years and keto/mostly meat for over a year. I feel so much better with less depression. So many benefits!

My depression didn’t lift completely until I dropped all nuts and nut butters from my diet. No almond flour etc. Nuts are full of oxylates and aren’t healthy. Spinach and avocados are also high. Things we are told are healthy just aren’t. Meat, eggs, cheese, cream and butter. No vegetable oils (impossible when eating out sadly but eating out is too expensive anyway). The dairy assuming you’re not sensitive. If you are senstitive to dairy, well that’s out too.

But I eat about 90% carnivore, allowing a few plant items for seasoning, variety, and quality of life, but virtually no sugars, grains, starches, alcohols, seed oils. People say oh thats too restrictive, but I say chronic pain/illness is too restrictive! Abstinence is the key to my serenity, vitality, and strength at 78🥩 💪🏃‍♀️🐎

Ketosis is not a therapy, it is part of our being like breathing. It is required especially for our huge brains. Producing ketones is just reverting to our normal state. The abnormal state is blocking ketosis with constant consumption of sugars and starches.

Right, but using a specific regimen to get a significant level of Ketones on a consistent basis *is* a therapy. And it's usually done via the diet, so I'm not 100% with the whole "this is not a diet", though looked at the right way, it's totally true. Personally, I want / need higher than normal ketones, to 1. treat epilepsy, and 2. hopefully reverse cancer. So I'm looking for > 3.0 mmol/L on a consistent basis kind of thing

Mary Ruddick tested the ketone levels of hunter-gatherers. She found they were regularly in low-level ketosis. But many hunter-gatherers also do fasting, persistent hunts, etc that would drive them into high-level ketosis.
In any case, ketosis is the normal state. In fact, babies are born into ketosis and remain in ketosis while breast feeding. Angela Stanton has found that children remain in ketosis, no matter their diet, into their teens.

Ketosis, and im hesitant to even use this word because people doing this long term do not even show high levels of ketones, as our body come to homeostasis, maybe fat burning is a better term? Anyway we are born into this state and our ancestors were pretty much always in this state, unless they came across some wild berries for 2 weeks out of the year. It is our optimal state, since we have been in this state for millions of years! Remember our blood has less than a teaspoon of sugar in it at any given time, which our body regulates with gluconeogenesis. Any more than this and our body has to go into emergency mode. Now look at all the people eating carbs and sugar 6 times a day, and we wonder why everyone is sick....

Ketosis is one state of our metabolism .we have two possible states of our metabolism .the second state is when we make glycogen energy from carbs . Metabolism can switch from one form of energy to another depending on whether we eat carbs ,or not . A high Fat ketogenic diet results in ketone production in the liver . Ketones can vitalise each of our 160 trillion cells .No medication can reach us at such a cellular levels .The healthier our cells , the healthier we are .Hence , the usefulness of keto in reducing symptoms of, and even entirely reversing , a variety of illnesses .With high carb diets , insulin is secreted to moderate resultant high blood sugar levels ...but excess insulin and insulin insensetivety can result .This IR /insulin resistance is a main driver of chronic illnesses that are a major problem for societies eaing a processed food diet .

Ketones definitely help the adhd brain. 🧠 I’d like to see this more researched and discussed. My way of doing keto is full of high omega 3 fish. Only anti inflammatory foods. Plenty of electrolytes as needed. Intermittent fasting brought even greater mental clarity and calm. As a side effect, I lost 20 pounds in 3 months. Fat. I have more energy and time to exercise, but my exercise routine didn’t change much. As other commenters note, ketosis is the primary source of fuel and should be understood as such.

Larger fish, especially , have mercury from polluted oceans .Therefore , only 100g of small 'wild caught ' fish every 5 days is recommended .Farmed fish are best avoided because they oftentimes don't eat the Algae needed to make the essential omega 3's.

Ketosis is what your body does, when it's generating ketones. And in a healthy diet, your body will be doing it every day (like overnight when you're fasting for hours). Now, doing things to increase the amount of Ketosis (increasing the level of Ketones produced and used) is the 'medical' intervention. But it happens that this is primarily and naturally done *via* changes in your diet! (Like removing carbohydrates, increasing fat, increasing fasting duration)

It was the last piece of the feeling good puzzle. Staying away from spinach and other oxylate heavy foods are a must. Avocados are surprisingly high too. You can make Chaffles with just cheese and egg and baking powder for your burger buns and bread like thing although I’ve gone very simple. Beef, eggs, chicken, bacon, cream and butter. I'm happy to hear this for you. I'm one who did learn about it with Dr. Atkins many years ago. PCOS was my problem. It was instant magic, my life changed on a dime. Then, after a major injury, I was counseled firmly against it. Terrified as a young mother I stopped it immediately. Within a few months I was back to ovarian cysts, massive weight gain, mental problems, hair everywhere except where I wanted it. 23 abdominal surgeries for cysts over 17 years until i ran out of lady parts, nervous breakdown, 27 years of depression medication. Destroyed my career, marriage, finances. My son grew up traumatized. So, back to the program now. Just completed withdrawal from meds(yep! Psych meds have a significant withdrawal "discontinuation syndrome". Its real, don't fool around with it). I'm just starting to transition to weight loss, I'm still packing about 40 too much. So, sad about the life loss, 40 year journey to get back (yes, I love the irony). But I'm here! My great grandbabies think I'm really cool, I can get down on the floor and play with them. My mom and dad are very vital 80+ and getting better with this too.

ADHD is one of the most common mental disorders and currently no cure exists. Only stimulants and non-stimulants help managing the symptoms but it doesn’t go away.
Because of high inflammatory foods (seed oils, high fructose corn syrup, sugar, wheat etc) and high carb low fat diets becoming mainstream the prevalence of ADHD among population is increasing dramatically.
If ketogenic diet almost cures Schizophrenia, bipolar and depression a milder disorder as ADHD should definitely show a far better remission.
Adhd, bipolar, schizophrenia, depression, autism all has comorbidities (meaning if you have one, there is a very high chance that you’ll have one another) and looks like all share the same core pathway, which is mitochondrial dysfunction that creates energy disregulation in brain cells.
I’m looking forward for a clinical trial that shows the efficacy of ketogenic diet on treatment of ADHD.
Hope Bazucki foundation is interested in funding this research, currently only limited animal studies exists on this and they look promising.

I did keto 4+ years ago. I lost 30 lbs in 90 days.
But, looking back, I see that I made several mistakes, e.g., going cold turkey, doing OMAD many days, over exercising when I hadn't done any before, not using electrolytes, etc. I was 65 then.
Not surprisingly, I wasn't feeling optimal. So, I switched to a more balanced diet.
However, I continued some of my extreme practices. I lost nearly 20 more lbs. I felt better than when on keto, but still had some issues.
Over a few months I backed away from the more extreme practices, gained about 10 lbs back, and started feeling better.
Since then, I've gained another 10 lbs. But I'm doing light weight exercises 4 times a week, and feel pretty good at nearly 70. My weight is stable.
My diet isn't perfect by a long shot, but I'm eating much healthier than before I went on keto.
I'd like to lose that last 10 lbs, but will need to tighten my diet up a little more to get there.
All in all, I feel healthy and am happy. I guess one can't do much better than that.

    Key takeaways from the talk:
    - Ketogenic therapy is not a diet, but a powerful medical intervention that can effectively treat various conditions, including type 2 diabetes, epilepsy, and mental health disorders.
    - Research shows that ketogenic therapy can lead to over 50% remission or reversal rates for type 2 diabetes, far exceeding medication-based treatments.
    - Ketogenic therapy has numerous beneficial effects on the brain, including balancing neurotransmitters, reducing neuroinflammation, and improving mitochondrial energy production.
    - Evidence suggests ketogenic therapy can be as effective as medications for treating conditions like depression, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia.
    - Proper implementation of ketogenic therapy under medical supervision is crucial, as factors like sleep, medication management, and electrolyte balance need to be closely monitored.
    - The speaker emphasizes the need to reframe the discussion around ketogenic therapy as a medical intervention, not just a diet, in order to increase its acceptance and proper utilization by healthcare providers.
    - Providing education and resources to both patients and clinicians is important to promote the understanding and adoption of therapeutic ketosis.

Ozempic doesn't interface with the ketogenic diet. Ozempic and its like are absolutely and utterly unnecessary for anyone prepared to eat a ketogenic diet. T2D reversal and weight loss can be easily achieved through ketosis as can many many other conditions.
Moreover the side effects of these drugs can be horrific, from a major percentage of the weight lost being muscle mass to gut paralysis to suicide and more.

Prime three times a day with carnivore ,grass fed beef , heavily rich with stearic fats, for 2-3 weeks - and no calorie restriction.
Then gradually go Carnivore, to twice/ day meals, really fatty grass fed and preferably organic but not absolutely necessary, twice a day …. then eventually maybe once a day.
Let go or at least question the ‘purify’ movements, and psychologically let go of all the pseudo spiritual beliefs around nutrition, no more green smoothies containing all that those toxic Oxolate rich veggies( kale spinach etc), let go of veggies with lectins, let go of all seed and nut oils, let go of all grains. No processed food of any sort. Let go of sugars and carbs, and no fake or substitute sweeteners. No numbers! Just grass fed fatty beef, heaps of clean simple water and Himalayan salt.
When your energy returns and inflammation and pains are melting away , start to move… move gently… once you have lost your unwanted fat and your body heals, you will want to strengthen, follow your heart’s inspiration here, , seek help and guidance. It’s an amazing path to- brain health, endocrine health, immunohealth.
Keto can be great for some, but, when loaded with veggies containing self-protective chemicals, will only be ok if your gut and tissues are not inflamed and your oxalates aren’t high and widespread.
Remember : on carnivore , No calorie count or restriction is required at all!
Later , you might feel the urge (especially when lost all the unwanted the fat) to include a range of dark organic berries, maybe a little pure honey now and then, but not needed.
Get carnivore information and if you think you need it then ask for coaching or supervision on the carnivore websites. It’s a much maligned lifestyle.
    Keto alone harmed me.
But Ketovore inspired me. Carnivore is healing me and many others, particularly if overweight, mood issues, fatigue, chronic pain, autoimmune disorders, inflammation, insulin resistance, etc etc. Gluconeogenesis means my body makes just the right amount of sugars and insulin it needs , insulin resistance resolves, but mainly I thrive on ketones as my main and widespread source of energy - especially brain and muscle. Maybe question the need for Ozempic type drugs - you have choice and maybe don’t need them. Can I suggest you consider Spending your hard earned money not on those weight loss drugs with all the side effects and instead spend it mindfully on grass fed rib eye! And direct your money to that hard working kind ethical farmer who respects their animals and fields, producing organic or grass fed ethical beef - and decide not to give it to the big Drug Companies, let them make good profits from someone else. Find and support an ethical honest beef farmer, who grows their grass without chemicals and toxins, and ensures their animals are not fattened on lollies, Swedes, corn or loaded carbs, … just grass , and then ensure you have an ethical butcher. Bless every meal of meat as you sit to eat , bless and give thanks to the animal, and promise you will put its life to great good use by the way you live and contribute.
Ah carnivore- so simple, so satisfying, so delicious, so easy, so effective… ❤

@GoneCarnivore I found that if I lose too much, I can add it back by going to 3 meals a day for a couple of weeks.
I suspect the periodic rise in insulin (from the protein, presumably) might be a key factor.
I have learned to pretty much maintain within -5lbs most of the year without looking at the scale (and yes, that's -5 lbs; I haven't gone +5 lbs in 8 years of keto). The most common culprit: extended, heavy outdoor activity in the summer.
I love the irony of the timing though, because it is the exact opposite of the old +10 problem of the winter holidays! 😅

I believe that L. Amber O'Hearn was the first person, who started to talk about the use of fat as the primary source of energy for humans (humans are lipovores). Yet, following a strict keto/carnivore diet will not substantially extend your longevity. Maasai people are a good demonstration of it. They are healthier, stronger, and better physically fit than people from other tribes, who rely on plant-based food. Yet, in older age, they suffer from autoimmune conditions. So, I try to go further and radically extend the longevity of humans. Is it possible? Nature gives us numerous examples of extreme longevity of some animals without magic pills and any change in genetics. I try to learn from nature, as I always did. Cheers

We’ve been brainwashed, not just misled, by the food industry, medical industry, pharmaceutical industry, insurance industry, religions, government, scientists, society…should I go on? Each one of these is responsible. Yes, some people do eat junk food, smoke, excessively drink, lead sedentary lives and make choices most of us know are very harmful but what about those put on psych meds or bp meds or insulin or told to eat lean or not eat animal proteins at all? And what about the vegan craze we are just now finally exiting? Think of how many have needlessly and detrimentally gone down that rabbit hole. In fact the entire planet has been duped to some extent that animals are spared by limiting food to agriculture. You are asking a lot of the every day person as pertains to health and good choices in the grander sense. This speaker is talking about more than nuances but this is recent information that is getting dispensed more and more to the general public. And if all of that doesn’t impress you, how many of us are instrumental in crop pollutants and toxicity in water, air, soil, food (including toxins in healthy foods)? There are so many reasons we are NOT responsible for the state of our bodies on this planet and reasons why we need proper assistance. Certainly we can take some responsibility but by far not all of it.

And what about what you were led to believe about the pyramid, not the one in Egypt? And are you old enough to recall being told margarine was right and butter was bad? How long have you known that the brain (and body) need a LOT of certain saturated fats? Did you buy into medical interventions with medications? What about surgeries, like orthopedic? How many years have you known about everything that is being discussed these days about ketones? I think you’re self flagellating a bit prematurely, maybe remove some of the whipping you do to yourself and you might just feel a whole lot better, then get on with it. We know more about the lies than ever before. Go in peace and finally with some truths you can hitch your giddy up to. ✌️

Ketosis is a biological state that humans evolved to. That is why it “works” in a magical way to “reverse” what survival diets/cultural traditions create. Putting it in a medical context is a good way to relegate it to the status of “cure” rather than putting it in a cultural context to transform our cultural understanding and practices. In other words, Ketosis needs to be understood by every person as their default optimal state and the government needs to protect cultural ketosis from the exploitation of industry - outlawing anything that is not a whole food and educating every person about a proper human diet that is at least 80% animal products.

Dietary interventions in general seem very effective in the short run, especially when you lose weight, but in the long run not so much. Roy Taylor found that even though people reversed their diabetes in the short run, in the long run most didn’t. I don’t know why, but our bodies seem to want to be fat.

    • @barblacy619
      @barblacy619 Місяць тому

People are very resistant to change. I just talked to a diabetic eating candy by the handful who lost a toe to gangrene and wants to join a kidney transplant list who completely tuned out my dietary advice. Their stomachs have become their gods and they actually trust their drug pusher docs. His main objection: I can’t give up fruits and vegetables they have vitamins!?
As we worked a polling place, all day long I saw him eat a small cup of sweetened applesauce- with his potato chips, chocolate pudding, cheezits crackers, and milk laced coffee. Not one source of animal protein in the diet.
The brain fog was evident. SAD is so sad.

    • @ketolomics
      @ketolomics Місяць тому

@gabymalembe Taylor tried to convince patients to eat a starvation diet. Worked. But turned out, unsurprisingly, not to be sustainable over time.
Dr David Unwin, meanwhile, simply encouraged his patients to eat fewer carbs by replacing them with things like eggs and full fat yogurt. The difference is that 60% of Unwins Type 2 diabetes patients reversed their diabetes and have sustained that reversal for years.
Hard to argue that diet doesn't work when we have so many people now continuing for over 5 years and more.
Starvation will reverse fatty liver and type 2 diabetes. But how long can you keep it up?
And what about depression? Or epilepsy? Or Crohn's disease? For sustained health, we need a sustainable approach to nutrition that delivers results. This is why keto is so attractive: it works at the start and then keeps right on working.
I appreciate Taylor's experiments, but he has never accepted that there is a distinction between do-able and sustain-able.
