Can I Try a Medical Keto Diet for Mental Illness Without a Metabolic Psychiatrist?

  • At Metabolic Mind, we emphasize that ketogenic therapy for psychiatric disorders like bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and major depression should be done with oversight from a clinician trained in metabolic therapies. Sometimes patients and their families voice frustration because it can be challenging to access metabolic psychiatry care. While ideally, every patient would have help from a clinician trained in medical keto for mental health, we know that this is not currently possible for many people.
    In this video, Dr. Bret Scher and Hannah Warren discuss why Metabolic Mind recommends that patients work with a clinician trained in metabolic therapies for mental illness, as well as some options patients might want to consider if they cannot find one, but still want to implement medical keto.
    This article goes into depth on the subject and links to a variety of resources:

    Let‘s face reality here for a moment: for 99% of people watching it is completely unrealistic to have access to a health professional with this specific qualification, let alone anything that resembles a team of professionals. For the vast majority of people it‘s not even possible to find or afford any kind of mental health professional when they need one. A guide on how to implement a safe and healthy keto diet would be much more beneficial to most people.

    I think it’s entirely counterintuitive to consistently promote the diet without providing assistance or ideas on how to do this independently because we all know conventional psychiatry doesn’t endorse these ideas. The ketogenic diet is the proper human diet, primarily consisting of animal products. We need to be realistic.

    Great episode we are currently struggling with our care team unfortunately we are in the public system and have had 4 psychiatrists in 6 mths
    We now have to meet a new one and explain about ketogenic therapy
    The positive is I feel like I am educating psychiatrists about the benefits of metabolic therapy
    So frustrating the longer they have been in the field the bigger brick wall they have up

      Sorry to hear about that. That sounds very frustrating. Hopefully some of our content and resources can help educate your clinicians. Please let us know what else we can provide to help.

      It doesn't help to have socialised healthcare systems, where there is no offer of choice in clinicians. Metabolic Psychiatry has no recognition in Britain's National Health Service.

    Thanks for another great video! A pleasure to watch. I am very greatful for Metabolic Mind and the information they share.
    I am at half my medication dose (as of two days ago) and my psychiatrist is not a metabolic psychiatrist, but she is supportive of me trying out medical keto.
    Thanks again for all your hard work and dedication to this project, Dr. Scher and Hannah!

    The American tragedy is that a huge number of people cannot get mental health care. Try calling an office, then tell them you're on Medicare. Suddenly, they are not taking new patients.

    LSS: I didn't find any help, they only tried to distract me. So I had to do it on my own. Over 2 years of plant based keto, I endet up being on a 100% carnivore life-style, otherwise I wouldn't have been able to manage to stay healthy. Even on clean keto I both, started to fall back, and develop new severe mental issues. So keto helped in the beginning, but after the plant toxins and the fiber almost destoyed my entire digestive system, only carnivore was able to entirely heal it and everything else.

    • @lexamdelac28
      @lexamdelac28 Місяць тому

      That is concerning. I don't believe everyone reacts to plants/fiber the same. I would love to know more about keto vs carnivore especially the reason(s) why keto might not be helpful enough for someone yet carnivore is?

    • @markuswaitzhofer4352
      @markuswaitzhofer4352 Місяць тому

      You’re right, everybody breaks differently, but heals in the same way. - Carnivore is keto, just the cleanest version without any harmful plants. Sooner or later the plants come and get you. Some vegans went carnivore after 30 years … it only took me 2 years, because I already was sick of 30+ years junk food. You may look up „5 Minute Body“ on youtube, or podcast, or her homepage etc. Her channel is a very good start to learn everything and find your way. Good luck.

    You are talking to Americans, too, a people who have to fight for basic healthcare. People have to take care of their own health. Failure or not, people have to keep trying.

    Here’s the deal; not everyone has the luxury of a “healthcare team” to tweak their diets for mental health benefits. Keto helps on every level. You DON’T need a medical practitioner to guide you through. Now if you’re on medications and want to wean off, help from a doc would be great, but don’t expect the person who thinks you need chemicals for your sanity to be a willing aid to this new plan of yours. Read, watch credible people on UA-cam
    (PHD researchers are best if you don’t want to wait 15 years for your MD to finally adopt the research into their practice) and get to work changing your life.

    Hello, thank you for this video. Its something that has been on my mind for quite a while. I have been diagnosed with BP2 since 2018. Since then, I have been on so many meds. While they are very helpful. They do come with their own set of side effects. I have been looking into the Keto diet for some time now. And all the videos advise, getting medical supervision. The problem that I an having is that I live in South Africa. And I haven't found a doctor who could help or even supervise. It's really really depressing because I would love to try the Ketp and see if there's any benefit to me

    We've got our team lined up, both clinical and family to give this a shot. While we're all new to this, we believe we can give this a successful try given all the resources you and others have provided. We're starting to remove certain carbs this month and will switch to keto therapy next. One question I don't see answered very frequently is what level of carbs to start off with? 20 Net, 20 Total? Other?

    • @metabolicmind
      @metabolicmind  Місяць тому +2

      Everyone can achieve ketosis and varying levels of carb intake. At 20 grams of net carbs, just about everyone will be in ketosis, so it is a great place for most people to start. For those eating a mostly whole foods diet, that is usually close to 30-40g of total carbs. For those who are more metabolically healthy and physically active, they may be able to stay in ketosis and 50g net carbs per day or higher. Checking ketone levels is a great way for each individual to find their threshold.

    it would be nice to have the benefit of a knowledgeable Dr to guide our lifestyle concerns, ( meanwhile back in the real world) but when was the las time coming off a real food dietary lifestyle be told they should consult a D before throwing sugar down their neck or eating a S.A.D. diet. it's only when you come of food industry backed way of eating that medical assistance is presumed a must.

    How much $$$ are you spending on supplements??? You can't do true healthy keto without meat or a lot of $$ on supplements. Ketosis does you no good with the proper building blocks for you body to build with. It will eventually catch up with you.

      I'm so glad you brought these topics up @pabeader1941 - thank you.
      You can do a healthy vegan or vegetarian ketogenic diet but as you mentioned, you do need to get a few supplements.
      The good news is that these supplements are easily affordable, such as vegan vitamin B12.
      Two excellent articles about this important topic can be found at the Virta Health website. Virta was co-founded by ketogenic experts/researchers Dr Stephen Phinney (who coined the phrase "keto adaptation" and Dr. Jeff Volek Search for the following two articles: "Can I be vegan and follow a ketogenic diet?" and "How to Eat Low Carb as a Vegan or Vegetarian."
