  • Hey Garden Peeps! This is the potting mix recipe I use for my Hoya plants. It is a wonderful bark-filled mix that my Hoyas all appreciate. I have a blog post on this same topic if you would like to see the recipe written out lggardening.co...
    This is the potting mix that works for me. Feel free to make adjustments to make it appropriate for your own home/microclimate.

    A few months ago, I found your blog online after searching for HOURS without luck for a good string of hearts potting mix recipe. Today, I was delighted to find that you also have a UA-cam channel! Please keep writing and making videos (especially about potting mixes, as I’m going through a bit of an obsessive streak of making individualized mixes for all my plants 😂😅)! You’re my new favorite plant blogger because your posts have been such a help to me!

    Thanks for the tips for the mixture for the hoyas you are using. Love the little piggy on your videos and the watermelon peperomia in the watermelon pot. Just subcribed!! Orchiata bark is awesome. Use it for my orchids.

    Hi there!, really enjoyed your video. Was going to repot one of my Hoya babies and thought that orchid bark would be a good idea. Then I found your video. Soo helpful, will be following your advice. Is it a good idea to use those orchid containers with the slits too? I know Hoyas like their roots to breath.

      Sharon Buening do you? A sensitive nose 👃 is kind of a blessing and a curse. Don’t you think? Mercy, peace and love be multiplied to you.

    The kind of mix that I can actually follow because you use "raw" materials and not like "add part cactus mix and this mix and that". Thank you. I will start with my own mix. I think I will use carbonized rice hull in place of horticultural charcoal. I just got my order of vermicast, pumice and coco peat (I don't have the coco coir, but we have coco husk lying around.) Thank you!

    Can potting mix catch fire by itself? We had a wooden planter with dried potting mix in it(nothing planted so far) and all of sudden around 7am(4° C) I saw fumes and the both bottom corners of my wooden planter were on fire! We never smoke and right now it's cold so we are not even using the balcony and we live on the top floor! It has really surprised us ,please let me know if you can shed some light on it?

      I know you mentioned that you don’t smoke, but the only other similar story I’ve heard was a guy that had an old pot of dirt in his garage from a plant that died and he just hadn’t dumped the soil yet, but it was miracle grow and when he finished his cig, he stuck it in the dirt to snuff it out, or so he thought. When he went back in the garage, the soil had “burned up” and melt the plastic pot it was in. I’m guessing all the fertilizer in the soil plus any he’d added while the plant was in there, along with the hot stuffy garage, and the cig caused it to catch fire 🔥 definitely scary that you had one basically spontaneously combust!

    your link that says Pumice goes to some Perlite on Amazon.

  • @cburton5951

    What is the difference between the one in the video, and the regular form?

    • @LiquidambarGirlGardening
      @LiquidambarGirlGardening  4 роки тому

      C Burton the one in the video is commonly called Mini Watermelon Peperomia. It’s scientific name is Peperomia verschaffeltii and it has smaller leaves. They also have more textured leaves than a “regular” watermelon pep (Peperomia argyreia). They feel almost corrugated whereas a P. argyreia has soft, smooth leaves. The mini has longer more lanceolate leaves and the other has completely tear-shaped leaves.
      Also I was wrong. My sale on Etsy has already started 🤣🤦🏼‍♀️

    Whoa. Perlite is more expensive than pumice where I'm from.

    Hi. Do you plant your Hoyas in terra cotta or plastic pots.

    • @LiquidambarGirlGardening
      @LiquidambarGirlGardening  4 роки тому

      I generally pot my Hoyas in plastic. I tend towards under watering and so plastic helps me keep moisture for a bit longer. I’m not opposed to Hoyas in terra cotta though, for the record 😜.

      Doug from Vermont Hoyas says that terracotta is not good for Hoyas, as when you repot it tears the roots. He likes either plastic or airy plastic like orchid pots for Hoyas.

      C Burton yeah it’s not terribly visible (thanks Etsy) under each listing it says “Eligible orders get 20% off”. It’s just $20 or more total orders are 20% off Sorry for the confusion

    I like this combination, but can you please break it down to parts or cups. I’ve already ordered my ingredients, just waiting for arrival...mahalo!

    • @LiquidambarGirlGardening
      @LiquidambarGirlGardening  4 роки тому

      KAHELANATOR hi 👋! It’s almost impossible to give out exact measurements bc everyone is using different products from different companies. The size of the perlite for example could change the amount you add. My best advice moving forward is this, if you are adding amendments to your potting mix, it will certainly be helpful to you plants. 🌱 Once you have your ingredients mixed up well, take a spoon or scoop and see if you have a little of each ingredient in the spoonful. If so, you’re doing great! Sorry I can’t be more exact. Best of luck to you!
