    I’m thinking about starting a UA-cam channel of my own and your video really showed me how important building your studio is in bringing a more intimate environment for your audience. I was wondering if you could go over how you think about adding music to your videos? Like what where do you get your music, when should you be filling in your video with music, balance between voice and music audio levels etc. I hope your channel blows up! You really deserve it!

    I also quit my job at the end of 2019 to work on a project that would help small businesses grow to create more jobs to solve the alarming unemployment rates in my country - especially amongst the youth. (over 77% unemployed youths!) So I'm scouring the internet for great DIY videos like yours to learn how to build a studio and be able to film and record tutorials and podcasts from inspirational figures that can train and help the youth, your two videos on setting up a studio have been of great help. Thank YOU!

      @@TheKevinShen This may be OUT there, but I built a teleprompter style device with a Raspberry Pi screen behind it that would have my students zoom camera faces behind it when they talk, with my camera reflecting from below, so it always looks like I am looking them in the eye when talking. Otherwise, historically I've had to "fake" it by looking at the lens directly knowing, which works, but so much more natural looking at the person you are talking to rather than a lens. Of course this is more about live stuff rather than recording. HMU if you need details. Good video otherwise. Also I shamelessly stole your colour scheme! Warmth with distant coolness. really brings ppl together.

I’m really impressed with this 2 video series and your explanation of color theory and how to set up lighting rather than just telling us what to buy. Please make a part three for those of us who wear glasses and want to film videos without glare without spending $$!

    • @TheKevinShen
      @TheKevinShen  5 років тому +2

      Hi Stella!! Thanks so much for taking the time to leave such an encouraging comment :) That's a great question! In my experience, you can adapt your setup for glasses by simply making sure that your lights are at least 45 degrees off-axis from your camera. Or I guess to be more specific, if you're facing the camera and that's 12 o'clock, make sure that your key light (the one lighting your face) is either around roughly the 9-10 o'clock position or 2-3 o'clock. That should prevent any glasses glare for most of the time unless you turn your head far to the left or right. Hope this helps! :)

    Kevin, how much wattage should I use in a small room if I want to have my face light properly but my background dark since I have some color LEDs on my bookshelf? Also, I tried using two light sources with daylight bulbs, and my face look too white, even if the keylight was stronger than my fill.

    • @TheKevinShen
      @TheKevinShen  4 роки тому

      Hello! Good question - I'm not sure I can say exactly how much wattage to use - it depends on the placement of your lights, the color of your background, the type of lighting you're using, etc. But a good rule of thumb is to give yourself time to experiment with it, move lights around and try experimenting with different placements even if you don't think it'll look good - that's what I do before all my shoots and I often stumble into new lighting setups that I didn't expect to work even better than my original plan.

    Do you have any tips for lighting a kitchen studio? I am in the progress of building one now. It is almost done. I need lots more light than you have to show the food I am cooking. I was thinking of adding extra light on the island where I prepare the food. What do you think?

    • @TheKevinShen
      @TheKevinShen  5 років тому

      Hey great question! :) Whatever lights you decide, I would recommend still finding ways to get a large diffuse light source and placing that as close as you can to your food. Shooting food is essentially like product photography where you're filming a small thing compared to a larger thing like a person. Some folks use 2 softboxes and place that to either side of the product/food and that seems to work well. I'd also recommend shooting with a lens with a longer focal length when shooting product shots so that you can have the food take up more of your screen and getting that blurrier background so your food really stands out. Hope this is helpful! Feel free to ask if you have any more questions :)

    Nice video. Does the dark blue colour of your wall attract some digital noise in your footage? If it does, do you use a denoiser to clean it off. II noticed a lot of digital noise while you were showing the behind the scenes with your iphone which is probably due to the dark blue colour and also the small sensor of the phone's lens.

    I really wish I had found your channel a week ago! I am on a super tight budget, so I am trying some of the cheap camera and LED panels on Amazon. My real issue is light placement. Lots of shadow... Excellent videos!

    Hello Kevin. I just subscribed to your channel. I like what you're saying and what you stand for as well. I watched the video on setting up your youtube/studio space. Great video and very helpful, as I'm wanted to do this now. I am considering the camera course you're offering also. Are you able to recommend a camera to start with that is budget friendly to shoot shorts, scripted, run and gun, youtube and feature style content. I realize not one camera does it all, but am hoping to narrow it down to something that will work for me. Thanks for what you do. Charles

    • @TheKevinShen

      Hey Charles, thanks for being here brother! :) That’s a great question. The features you’re probably looking for are 1) a flipout screen so you can see yourself when vlogging, 2) an external mic jack, 3) and maybe some image stabilization if you want to get fancy. Depends on your budget too. I’d say that #1 is the most important probably. Also consider what size would be too much trouble to carry around. They say that the best camera is the one you have on you at the time :)

      @@TheKevinShen .LOL, yes. Currently that's the Samsung S10+, but soon to be the Samsung S20 Ultra. But, do give me a few budget friendly names I should look at (please). Thanks.

    • @TheKevinShen
      @TheKevinShen  5 років тому

      Hey thank you so much, Israel!! :)) That means a lot! Oooh great question - not to sound overly self-promotional haha but I actually put together an hour-long course with 30+ sections talking about my exact settings if you're curious to dig into the specifics! But to answer your question, I usually shoot in a custom flat profile with shutter speed of 1/50 for 24fps shooting or 1/200 for 120fps, and roughly f/1.8 - f/4 aperture, and a fixed ISO that I dial in by looking at the histogram to make sure I'm not overexposing or underexposing anything. If I'm shooting outdoors with unpredictable lighting, I usually leave ISO on auto since it's more important for me to capture everything visible than to have a perfect shot where there is no ISO flickering as it automatically adjusts every now and then.

      oh! and sorry to answer your other question, the lenses I use mostly are the Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L II and the Canon 20mm f/2.8. I love my 50mm f/1.8 though too :) I also have a few other lenses as well for specific use-cases like getting extra large bokeh by using longer focal length zoom lenses.
