  • Taken 11/4/22. Started my day early to drop off something and still had time leftover before Work. After taking #824 from Jamaica to Long Beach, hung out and chatted with a friend to pass the time before heading West on #855 back to Penn Station. Enjoy!

    Lived on Long Island for 62 years before moving to Colorado to be with family. Rode the MP-54s back in the 60s; miss the moanin' and groanin' of the motors, plus the distinct odor of ozone. All the pre M1 MUs had the rather distinctive Westinghouse controller, which was based on elevator controls! Some of the engineers were almost as old as the MP-54s, and so were a lot of the conductors. Lots more variety of rolling stock in those days, with old and new cars mixed together in trains. Unique "doubledeckers" too, which were roundly disliked by conductors, cleaners and a lot of ladies! Many ancient cars on the diesel lines , heated by steam. LIRR was big ALCO customer, and the RS-3s had a very distinctive burble. I also remember the destruction of Penn Station, which was a tragedy. Thank God they saved Grand Central! The LIRR starts service tomorrow to "Grand Central Madison", which was nothing more than a wild dream in my day. Colorado is nice, but you can't get a good "hard roll", and there's no "Change at Jamaica"!

    Amazing to see the rail system in this way. On one hand it is said to be antiquated. It was built a long time ago. Some rails had been there for decades. On the other hand it is something that these miles or railway had been built as far back as the mid 1800s and they still work and can be used to transport people and products.
    There is just an enchanting element to the entire rail system.

    Awesome video. I grew up in Long beach. In the 80's when I was about 6 or 7 years old, one of my dad's friends was an LIRR operator. One day he let me drive the train over the trestle on a train that was returning to LB. It was a cool experience. PS. It was the old bridge that swung out.

      Yeah nobody would let you even into the CAB these days if you’re not rules qualified. In my brief time with Metro North before I was terminated for “not meeting the expectations of the training program” I asked an engineer if I could ride in the cab on my way home from New Haven CT to Grand Central so I wouldn’t be taking up a seat from a paying customer. He asked me “are you qualified?” I obviously can’t lie about that so the answer was no, I couldn’t ride in the cab.

    a very enjoyable video. I, a country boy, was amazed to see kudzu vine growing on long Island! Growing well too. I must have seen maybe eight patches. Then too, oh the vines! so many vines, even right down to the near Manhatten!

    Thanks for posting. My uncle was an engineer on the Long Island Rail Road and he influenced me to become an engineer too. This video reminds me of him, although he hated running the M series, but stuck mostly with diesel jobs.

    This video illustrates an interesting and enlightening cultural and regulatory contrast between the LIRR and my employer, a major US airline. A similar workplace video at said airline is in direct violation of company policy, a policy that is partially crafted due to regulatory oversight.

      The M series cars have pretty aggressive braking. They can stop better than anything even Amtrak has. You get the occasional flat spot…

    These new LIRR timetables are an absolute mess because there’s no timed connections at Jamaica anymore. My home station is Hewlett on the Far Rockaway branch but I often find myself going to Lynbrook so I don’t have to wait 10-15 minutes at Jamaica for a transfer. Also the fact that they eliminated through service to Atlantic Terminal was also an awful decision. They have since brought back through service to Brooklyn but only for the MORNING rush. There’s very few trains that go to places other than Jamaica from Brooklyn during the evening rush. There’s a few trains to Freeport and only ONE to Hempstead. The only branch that runs through service to Brooklyn at all times is West Hempstead which is not a high ridership line. I have cousins that live in West Hempstead and they always go to Mineola when they take the train into Manhattan.

    • @MrMaster767
      @MrMaster767  5 місяців тому

      It's horrible. Connections are no longer guaranteed and there's no more "All aboard". Trains would pull in side by side, you want to get to the Penn Station Train from the Grand Central Train, That Train's doors open first, and then right as yours open, that Train's door close, angering people. One time I was doing A B and C one night in Jamaica (I work in Stations FYI) someone ran to the Penn Station Train from the GCM Train and started banging on the door as the Train pulled out, and the GCM Train couldn't leave because not all the doors closed. Turns out, they became so impatient, they punched the emergency door release handle and manually opened the door, resulting in having to cut out the door and then log it to the Dispatchers. It's amazing how stupid people are these days.
