- Taken 12/6/22. With an M3 running all day on Port Wash, took a round trip retake to Port Wash and back, followed by a walk in the City for a bit. Enjoy!

After having run trains in the midwest for the CP all my career, I have to say this ...the track and signals, etc., shown in this video are nothing short of outstanding! The rest of the USA and Amtrack need to get their collective act together!
Like you, I'm a rail fan (nut?) and really appreciated the outstanding perspective on the MANY different track configs, but especially just how many DIFFERENT signals lights 'systems' co-exist on that single line in a

It's amazing to see the old Pennsy position light signals co-existing with the new colored-light system. The Pennsy owned the LIRR and put their influence to work with K4 Pacifics running on the non-electrified lines, position light signals and the old MP54s running on the electric lines. What's more interesting is that around Penn Station the New Haven had their influence too on the north side. Before the colored lights were put in, the New Haven Railroad had their own semaphores there as well. Way back in the 1970s, I took an Amtrak ride from Boston to Penn Station NY and the old semaphores were still in use back then along with their old washboard EMUs and other equipment. The old New Haven catenary too can be seen as the train turns on its own line out to Long Island. The old NH catenary is quite unique and much of the old infrastructure still exists but is sadly being replaced.
In some ways it's sad seeing the old infrastructure being replaced with new equipment but then the old stuff does wear out. Let's face it, the old Pennsy signals are going on 100 years old now and the NH catenary is much older than that.
Indeed, many of these scenes are examples of what good railway infrastructures should be. We owe much today to the the high standards originally set by the PRR whose influence on the LIRR is evident. 2023/01/15. Ontario, Canada.

As a 21 year old Australian tourist I rode this train in 1998, on a quest to find the location of The Great Gatsby. It was a magical experience. So much so that 13 years later I took my (then new!) wife to recreate the journey. it would be hard to find many places that are FURTHER away from Sydney, Australia, but since that day in 98 I've felt like I'm connected to it. Special memory.
These type of rail videos are dominated by ones from Japan and Europe on UA-cam so its nice to see one from NA - Thank you :)

We also have these sorts of videos here in Australia also. Sydney (Central) to Gosford/Newcastle I think is the most popular, followed by Central/Blue Mountains or Central/The Gong (Wollongong). Thers also a lot from the other states as well. However the ones I've mentioned seem to be the most popular with overseas people, as they show our beautiful country, here in Australia. I recommend a 3 hour Central to Newcastle video as it shows some really beautiful country and also how large and diverse our beautiful country is. However to see how big our country is and to see how really diverse she is I'd go with the 4 day Ghan cab trip. As it goes from the bottom of Australia to the to or the malty day Sydney to Perth IndianPacific Train trip one side to the other. Thank you.
As a European, I concur - this was really interesting. Even if the signalling system is nothing short of an enigma to me.

I've taken this train many times between Penn and Great Neck but never had seen the forward view inside the tunnel under Manhattan and East River. This brought back many memories.
For those not familiar with the area the Willets Point station is where Citi Field (New York Mets) and the USTA National Tennis Center (US Open tennis) are located. The tennis center is visible on the right side approaching the stop.
Cool. Thanks for letting us know. I used to work in WTC One years ago & got on the PATH to head home late one night. The driver had his door open & you could see out his window. Still one of the coolest sights! 🚂
Yah crazy the amount of work and time that went into building that is amazing those tunnels took years too build most of the people that worked on it are long gone

WINFIELD JUNCTION [11:47] - It's where LIRR's Port Washington Branch diverges from the roadbed shared with the Main Line via Woodside Station.
My dad worked for the LIRR in the 1960's and 70's. He often took me with him and I loved every minute of it. I just sat here for almost an hour watching the video and felt so emotional over seeing so many things I haven't seen in years. Thank you so much!!!!

VERY nice video record in this recording! I last rode this line (westbound/eastbound) from Port Washington-Shea Stadium for a Met's game in early June 1965. My Mom drove us from Syosset to Port Washington, so we could train ride rest of way, she shopped in Port Washington/Manhasset (Miracle Mile?) area until we returned after game by train. We moved from Syosset to Northern Virginia suburb of Fairfax (talk about culture shock!) in late June. I was 14 1/2 years old then. Video brought back some fond memories of LIRR rides I took often- many Mets games among them, mostly from Syosset to Penn Station and back. Will look into some of the other 'now know available' videos of LIRR trips from you. Keep up the GREAT WORK!!
I use to take the port Washington line to Great Neck with my mom to visit my aunt when I was little, this brings back old memories .

Great clip. Spent my early years in Great Neck and did this trip many times. Last time was 1969 when I was inducted into the Army. Came back from Vietnam and ended up migrating to Australia from the UK of all places. Been here ever since. Never rode it again….long time ago now. Some real memories here.

Awesome. I used to love standing at the front. One of my oldest memories and would do it as an adult too. I was so disappointed last time I drove in from Hamptons to take that train. No front window on my train

I was an Engineer on the UP railroad for 42 years (retired now) but never had to run in that long of tunnel... That was definitely different and I too was waiting for the exit to open spaces...LOL.... I wonder if a derailment has ever happened in there and how they deal with it, in those tight spaces...
Imagine all the GG 1s that went through those tunnels daily!

The Pt Washington line of the LIRR has always been #1....so reliable
As tourists, we've never been to this part of NY, and enjoyed watching this. What would have helped us is a bit of talk as the train progressed - the propulsion of the train (it looks like 3rd rail electric), where we're up to and so forth

When the train was entering Willets Point I was wondering if Arthur Ashe was that close to the tracks. Then I realized I'd taken the subway the only time I'd gone to the US Open and at the subway station you're above and perpendicular to LIRR tracks. Thanks for the vids
I’ve lived in Manhattan, Brooklyn and the south shore of Long Island for all my life. But I never rode a north shore train. So this was a eye-opener for sure. I remember well the steam locos of the former Pennsylvania Railroad run by LIRR crews.
Miss my LIRR rides !! I used to take the Ronkonkoma-Penn train (7:19 am - 5:55 pm). The 5:55 pm was the "train of the dead". Everybody is dead after a full day of work in Manhattan.
This is too hard to watch actually. I missed my New York years. These LIRR rides were full of excitement. Heading for work, and back home. Both ways.
I look back on my commuting days from NJ into the WTC & wonder how I did it. Just younger I guess 😉
Love riding the trains, however I wish more of the stations were accessible for the disabled, e.g., the Mets-Willets Point station that people use to attend the NY Mets baseball and the National Tennis Center where the US Open is held.

Out of curiosity are you related to a teacher (would be retired now) who used to teach in Little Neck at PS 221 North Hills School on Marathon Pkwy?
She taught like first grade if I remember correctly. It's a LONG time ago
Nice smooth trip back in time to the many years I was LIRR commuter. Ah Woodside, time to kick back for a 30 minute read or card game with commuter buddies. You never forget the station callouts, which I can recite to this day.

For decades, I've always wondered why there is so much crap on the sides of the tracks - buckets, tools, old water coolers, Gatorade bottles, papers, cigarette butts, old railroad ties...
reminds me of a couple of weeks I spent in Southhampton many years ago. Between SH and London, only difference, the train went 100 mph between platforms. clean and comfortable and relativly cheap

I was hoping the train would stop at Forest Hills (the nearest LIRR station to me and a very attractive station) but when I saw that it stopped at Woodside, I knew it wouldn’t. Still, it was nice to “ride” along. I sometimes take the train out to Long Beach.

Love the ride - Ron Mahre from Acworth Ga. Formerly from 38 First Ave Manhattan, 130 Columbia street, Manhattan, 180 Livingston street Brooklyn, 351 Pacific street Brooklyn then Orlando back to NYC Lefferts Blvd than 98 street in Woodhaven then Acworth.
Well, I have the opposite opinion, at least of the layout, and conditions at the Port Washington terminal. Now I understand why there is only 4 trains per hour. So much can be fixed here if the LIRR wants to provide a 15-minute service in both directions to/from Port Washington.
I take LIRR everyday and every day I stare at the track trying to figure out how they’re able to steer seeming steer from one track to another and don’t get me started on the type of welder that needs to exist to creat track that looks like x’s. Then there’s the what seems to be gas lines with a pilot lite like flame I assume is being utilized to heat the track at Jamaica? Idk but wild!!

Love this bro! somebody FINALLY did the Port Washington run! :-D I'm not from the NY or even Long Island area, but I DID enjoy riding the Lirr the 3 times I'd been to Penn Station. I never even knew these trains had horns!!! I was always back in cars 3, 5 or 6 I think. And most times when I rode, some of the cars were closed off. Great video, my man! :-

I don't know squat about this RR. Does the power come from the flat rail to the side? How do they complete the circuit? How many volts, ac or dc? I've never ridden on a train, but flew from the prop era onward. Thinking of driving to Florida, take a ride on the Brightline, or maybe an Amtrak. The scenery here on this line looks so steampunk, all the concrete, industrial and old houses.

Hi, curious as to how you record these videos. Is your camera / phone on a tripod, mount etc?
How do they power these trains? I'm just curious that's all. As there is no overhead wiring. In England they have a Third Rail & here in Australia we've got Overhead Wires.
3rd rail, next to the track on one side or the other and covered to prevent unintended contact. In stations, it is always on the side away from the platform. Most rapid transit systems use that. I don't know what voltage they use there, but something like 750 volts DC is common.
It would have been neater to include chapter marks or titles for stations/landmarks
I could, but I prefer to do that on flights.

Driving from NYC to Long Island
Pennsylvania Station on Manhattan Island in New York City is where the video starts. Penn Station is shared by the Long Island Railroad running to the East (originally a subsidiary of the Pennsylvania Railroad), Amtrak (using the former PRR electrified NorthEast Corridor) and New Jersey Transit (a state agency that consolidated passenger service some of which was former PRR/Conrail)
New York City requires that only electricity can be used in tunnels. You will notice there is both third rail and overhead wiring in the tunnel

Please forgive me for asking a basic question as one who has no knowledge about trains, subways, railroads and the like, but how does the train/subway determine which part of the track it goes to? I’ve noticed the tracks split apart or go in different directions. Hope this makes sense.
That's what Block Operators, Directors, and Dispatchers are for.
