      Agree. 4 is such a mess. Starts off cool, Saejima’s section is a slog and his character arc is rendered a big waste of time via rubber bullets, Katsuragi’s plot is absurd, the scene atop Kamurocho Hills is like David Cage game level stupidity, and the final boss is the worst in the series.

      Some people complain about the glacial speed, and sometimes they do overdo it. That first scene with Yasuko is rough. But the fact that they're willing to let scenes breathe a little is nice. It allows for some really cool, unique storytelling (at least for a video game, which is usually a medium guilty of bombarding the player with stimulation constantly).
      It's a shame the overall pace of the story breaks the fucking sound barrier starting with Chapter 3. The second half of the game stops giving the story much breathing room, and the overall work kinda suffers for it.

      He was still responsible for their deaths. He incapacitated those men so that they could be murdered by the other guy 5 minutes later, it really makes no difference whether or not he actually dealt the killing blow. Saejima still showed up with the intent to kill them, and at the end of the day, they were dead because of the bullets he fired, rubber or not. I feel like the only reason they made the distinction is so they TECHNICALLY don't have any protagonists who have killed.

    I'm surprised to hear how much people dislike 4's story because I really enjoyed it all the way through. Even the twists didn't feel stupid in the moment, they're well foreshadowed and told. 4 isn't one of the best in the series or anything but I respect that it tells a sprawling and complex story without having the issues 5 has with getting bogged down in details that don't ultimately end up mattering. It's complex yet focused.

  • @MrRobertGillan

    Yakuza 4 was the first Yakuza game I played back in 2011 and it introduced me to the series so it’ll always have a special place in my heart.

  • @OcelotKong
    @OcelotKong Рік тому +17

    One thing I'll always appreciate about 4's story is how it frames Kiryu as this absolute monster. Up until you play as him, you'll hear characters mention his name and title like it's that of a god's, and when you finally step into Kiryu's shoes one of the first things you do is rip and tear through Akiyama and Tanimura at the same time - both having displayed their immense strength through their respective gameplay segments. I feel like every game beyond 2 (I haven't played 7 by the way) doesn't do a good job at making it seem like Kiryu is truly being challenged, even with the final bosses, so I'm glad RGG took 4 as an opportunity to give us perspective into just how much of a unit he is

    • @creativename1673
      @creativename1673 Рік тому +1

      I'd say Kiryu was also somewhat struggling at times in 3, even more so than any other game I'd say
      He literally collapses after the final boss, only one other fight left him in a similar state and that was against Saejima

    • @Lulink013
      @Lulink013 Рік тому +1

    • @OcelotKong
      @OcelotKong Рік тому

      @@creativename1673 It's hard for me to think of times where Kiryu met his match in 3 except for the final boss. I think a core theme of 3 was to show how Kiryu's evolved into a mentor role, and that shows with a lot of the antagonists like Kanda and "CIA Agent" being weak as they are (Kiryu beat the latter multiple times, even when they were accompanied with backup). Even then a problem I have with the final boss of 3 is that he just shows up and happens to be as strong as Kiryu. With the prior final bosses, you could draw a line to where their strength came from, but 3's final boss just feels like some dude who happens to be shredded? I guess it doesn't matter if he was still a challenge for Kiryu in the end, but the point I want to make is that the challenge in that instance doesn't feel genuine

    • @OcelotKong
      @OcelotKong Рік тому +2

      @@Lulink013 that fight ended in a draw, and I wouldn't say it's wild to assume Kiryu wasn't giving his all during that battle. I think that was mostly the game wanting to establish the strength of Kiryu's rival in that fight out of the gate, and it works without jeopardizing Kiryu's status because Kiryu still doesn't lose in the end

    • @creativename1673
      @creativename1673 Рік тому +1

      @@OcelotKong Joji has him winded at the end of his fight (not to mention the "if you were any younger, I would have lost" comment, coming from Kiryu himself), but there's also QTEs. Unlike the other games, he doesn't overpower people too often, with it only really being the case for Kanda and (ironically) Mine, but with fights like Tamashiro and Lau Ka Long, they clearly have him on the defensive.
      Also, your point against the final boss can really be applied to anyone, including Kiryu himself. Like, yeah, he's a student of an ancient martial art as of 1, but even in 0 he was already a monster with no real explanation given for it. It's not unreasonable to assume other people could reach that level if they tried.

    The more I look back, the more I realize that there's always some part of the combat mechanics in each of these games that isn't properly explored enough despite being essential for most players to know especially later on. For Y6 and K2, it's all the different new moves and combos you can do in Extreme Heat Mode. For Yakuza 4 and 5, it's how each protagonist is proficient with certain weapon types that MASSIVELY ease certain boss fights that'd normally be a headache to do unarmed. Tanimura is the perfect example. I didn't know that people considered his boss fight specifically as one of the worst in the series, because I was always using weapons that he's good at, such as the tonfa. The heavy spinning attack that Tanimura does with tonfa-type weapons like the Platinum Ruler absolutely murders his final fight, but I understand if people go into it with nothing but health items and the bulletproof armor set, and then find it to be a chore because he sucks against groups without a weapon.

    First three fights go without any issues, but I'm surprised Kiryu isn't last.
    "Ha, doesn't matter, the cop's grabs and parries will make it easy no matter the moveset I face!"
    Famous last words.
    I had to run circles around the group of melee guys to get a few hits in on the actual boss, then it was back to making laps... And again, and again...
    I had no choice since fighting a horde of grunts with a gun pointed to your head is nigh-impossible with so little healing.
    When the boss finally died I just had to slowly clean up the massive health bars of the guards, and it completely ruined the mood.

Then after that said chapter, YOU GOTTA FACE AGAINST THE ORIGINAL PROTAGONIST WHILE KEEPING THAT SAME HEALTH BAR YOU GOT FROM THE PREVIOUS CHAPTER UNLESS YOU DIE. I actually played this game on my PS3 after Kiwami first came out and I beat it, because I got it from Playstation Plus a while back. So my playing order was in fact 0, Kiwami, 4, 5, 6, Kiwami 2, and then I played 3 when the remaster finally came out, and YES I was confused while playing 6

    Gameplay and sidecontent wise this game is great. The story of the game for me is at a point of "so bad it's good" type of thing. I loved all the character introductions. The last part is mostly comedy at this point for me.

      i always joked about the whole "we are the yakuza 4" type of power rangers shit, but the final script was literally that. i was laughing so much, all the dialogues were so funny like kido saying "those 4 are unbeatable togheter" and the rest

  • @hairy_putin

    I really liked being able to parry and having the handcuff move totally remove enemies from the fight as Tanimura. Those two things made things so much more satisfying and a bit easier, but the final boss was still insanely annoying as him. Not 'Kiwami Jingu sapping all my healing items and leaving me to fight Nishiki naked with a pool noodle and a crack pipe on Legend' annoying, but annoying nonetheless. Saito was also hell as Saejima, underlevelled and unused to PC controls (PS5 controller inputs get read as other inputs, so I was cursed to adapt), and with my smooth brain, unable to get a hold of his attack patterns.
