I feel like I'm the only guy who actually likes Haruka in Yakuza 5. I find her whole chapter to be a refreshing change of pace and being able to run around town without having to deal with encounters is a godsend.
it's because Haruka acts nothing like she used to; younger Haruka was smart and she didn't take anyone's shit. Yakuza 5 Haruka is bland, she's a total pushover and she's so stupid that she causes Yakuza 6 to happen.
Nah bro Haruka’s section is my favorite part of the entire game. It’s perfect. An incredible way to break up the pace halfway through the story and refresh you with some of the best banger songs in the entire franchise. We love Haruka’s Y5 section.
I just beat Y5 myself and yeah I loved Haruka's part (tho the ending I'm not crazy about.) Personally I think it's okay for Haruka to not be a fighter. For some reason a lot of people seem to think female characters are only worthwhile if they're fighters. I personally have never wanted Haruka to have to get into fights. I'm all on board for an ass kicking female protag, and I love Sayama, but that life doesn't have to be for everybody. And it also feels a little weird to conflate Haruka's brave and headstrong nature with "she has to become a fighter".
@@lovelydumplingYeah. There are different types of bravery, and there are different kinds of strength, and Haruka's is no more worthless for not being tailored towards combat.
The thing with Haruka is that making her a fighter would go against everything Kiryu has ever done and will do after 5 to protect her from the underworld of the yakuza. Even if you replace the idol contest with a karate competition, you have to remember that Haruka got dragged into 5's story because the people after her are actually yakuza trying to use her as blackmail for Kiryu. In this scenario, making Haruka a fighter would motivate her to insert herself not only in this conflict, but any future conflicts Kiryu would have, because she can hold her own in a way, but again this is going against everything her story and relationship with Kiryu establishes, and would make the ending of 6 borderline impossible. With Haruka specifically, it's not because she's a female protagonist but because of who she is, or at least that's what I think RGG saw in her story. Maybe she could take some classes for self defense and defending the other kids, but she shouldn't go as deep as being able to fight like the other playable characters because of the inserting herself into every conflict thing. Either way, 5 is pretty good, it's one of my favorites from the Yakuza series. It's has a lot to say, it has a lot to play, and while it's a big mess overall, it's a very enjoyable mess with one of the best combat systems in the series. One of the trailers for Yakuza Online showed the potential of her being actually able to defend herself. I have to agree that she maybe shouldn't jump into every conflict, but her learning to defend herself so that not every petty yakuza kidnaps her with kiryu ending up to constantly safe her sorry ass would be a better decision than the dumbass one that she made to become an idol. (And that would probably have prevented her doing the next dumbass decision in Yakuza 6)
Ay bruh I dunno about you but I knew a girl who was a black belt in karate and she never once got into a real fight and I think becoming an idol with a concert that had, like, 100,000 people in the crowd at the end of the game paints a way bigger target on you compared to an under 18 karate tournament with like 100+ parents and like 50 kids lol

Shinada’s section was damaged really hard by it being the fourth hard plot reset in a game that feels like it’s a million hours long. By the time you reach his section, you’re so sick of the game that you just want it to be over. I despised it until rewatching the cutscenes recently.
two things: 1. I'm kinda glad that Shinada didn't get any more story. His arc feels very complete and i feel like touching it in any way would make that worse. I would absolutely love for him to get more screen time, but maybe via means of substory of him being happy in life and something unexpected happening to him. 2. haruka being the damsel in distress to me is fine, but the rest of orphanage kids not having almost anyone left there to watch over them rubs me the wrong way. Mikio (i think that was the name of Rikiya's sidekick?) hasn't appeared in any game since 3. What I would love to see is someone like Taichi, who already has wrestling aspirations, join Ichi's team, or maybe even Kiryu's (though that would undo y6).
Despite its cheesiness, Baka Mitai is truly a beautifully written song and it blows my mind that it was written for a video game. At first I assumed it was an existing Japanese pop song from the 80’s or something. I used to do a lot of songwriting and would have been extremely proud to have come up with that melody.
I unironically want to play Yakuza 5 because of the Haruka sections just because my favorite part of all the games I played was the Karaoke. I want a whole campaign based on the Karaoke and I'm not kidding.
Playing as Haruka was great, but they didn't flesh her part of the game out that much, which is a shame, they really should have done more with her and split her and Akiyama into two distinct chapters. Oh, and they kinda changed her character for the worse and made it even more horrible in 6, so I'm just warning you.

As a rhythm game fan, I honestly enjoyed Haruka's section of this game but if I had to choose between that and Haruka taking after Kiryu and beating up fools on the street, I'd choose the latter in a heartbeat. Or at least have her take self defense lessons so she has a similar combat style to Tanimura that revolves around parries and counters.
I also enjoyed the rhythm game part but her learning to actually defend herself would have been a far better choice than going idol and Kiryu still having to constantly safe her ass
I've started playing Yakuza 5 and I've really loved how the first part is. Kiryu is trying to support Haruka, he's trying his best to live a normal life and there's such a sad realization to when he's stuck in the yakuza life no matter his choice. And then Saejimas part shows up and I want to tear my hair out because they gave him the most fetch quest inflated chapters ever made.
I remember the first time I got to Haruka's section in this game. I was so excited thinking that maybe she would learn a dancing fighting style like Majima's in 0, just for hopes to be crushed
Not to mention the Forbidden Word, but I’m pretty sure (excluding songs) they say Yume like 480 times total in the game. There’s a compilation somewhere out there
What caught my interest, is that Haruka went through quite a bit during her chapter, then, it looked like she could really use someone. And Akiyama thankfully was there and stepped in.
My first playthrough of Yakuza 5 was about 60 hours. Half of it was me dozing off during Saejima's chapter, the other half was me struggling to get from anywhere to a save point (there were a shit ton of street encounters)
i am glad they finally got rid of the ridiculous phone booth thing in 6 and you can save via your phone. Yakuza 5 is actually one of my fave Yakuza games but the Saejima chapter was BORING. and it sucks because he is such a beast in battle. i HATED the hunting missions sucked some of em were mandatory. the second i could get off that mountain i did i HATED that part
I think it could have been interesting if Haruka told Kiryu she wanted to be an idol as a cover for a martial arts tournament, since he'd probably never be cool with it otherwise. Hell, she could learn alot from Akiyama just by watching him fight since she wouldn't have the raw power of Kiryu.
This is the first time I see someone saying they enjoyed playing with Shinada and following his story, not to mention that being their favourite part xD
There is this one thought about this game was how much this game would've either got screwed over or screwed on GTA V if it were released months/weeks before that game.
I think the enemy leader mechanic was also in 3,4 ,there were these enemies who double health bars but once you kill them, other enemies would sometimes (as in a less common chance) fear you. Maybe its just me but i feel like it did exist in the other two games
Enemy leader mechanic is kind of a necessity in Y5. The amount of goons on the street is ridiculous. When I started Y5 I got into a chain battle of literally 3 enemy groups engaging me one after another in a span of seconds. It was a big what the actual f moment. After I figured out the leader bit the battles became A LOT faster.
Still in the top 3 Yakuza games, this and 0 where the series peaked (the Judgement games were pretty good too). I liked the Haruka part, after getting thorugh the Kiryu and Saejima part it's a nice change of pace to just relax and not fight everyone for an hour or two. Also we don't need more Shinada stuff, his story was great but he did his part and got his happy ending (same with Tanimura from 4 though he is probably dead).
@@Yakazoo true he can also transition from a combo to a grab in 1 frame allowing him to throw the enemy to the ground and do a number of heat actions that deal a million damage
I Didnt know rgg make binary domain that game was pretty decent but have nothing ground breaking tho, i do agree with the spawn kuza meme even with a mod that reduce the spawn by 30 % it still way to much
The third chapter broke my patience, and it was Shinada in general that got me to not like it, and then I opened my eyes, I realized, characters were starting to babble, often on one subject that gets hammered in and got old the first time I opened my eyes to it. The only Yakuza/Ryu Ga Gotoku game I genuinely hated worse than Yakuza/Ryu Ga Gotoku 4 in terms of ending.
Yakuza 5 is one of my favorites cause yeah it can be slow and boring but for me i like nearly all of it. It showed me i can enjoy playing yakuza in pretty much anyway whether its fighting, dancing, and everything else cause the whole game just feels so heartfelt
Shinada's chapter is so good and I honestly don't think his fights are as bad as everyone claims once you unlock the good stuff. But mostly the story and characters including my boy Takasugi who is the most pleasant surprise in the series. Starts out as "oh here we go another generic Yakuza loan shark" then becomes "I would literally die for this precious homeboy". Shinada in general was such a surprise for me I remember thinking "who is this generic ass dude" on the title screen and being a disappointed Tanimura fan and I've never been happier to be so wrong.
Me playing Shinada's story: "Wow! This might be the greatest game in the series!" Me playing Saejima's story: "Wow! This might be the worst game in the series!" Kiryu's stuff is alright ig
I usually think this in every single one of the Yakuza games, but especially in 5, they could've cut a good chunk of the cutscenes out and still told a similar story.
ngl i outta nowhere LOVE this idea of direction of what if the game was centered around haruka doing karate, the akiyama part wwould also fit in well as you mentioned, i just donnt know how kiryus part would fit in
I LOVED this game, from the very start I knew that this was the longest game in the series so I took my time with it, and it is to this day one of my favs in the franchise, and I pray to every single god there is that rgg bring back Shinada in any way to a new yakuza game
I will also openly admit that I didn't have the best opinion of Shinada's moveset, and that the game really is easy enough to get through it without taking advantage of it. But after seeing his heat actions and a few videos on how to actually get the most out of his moveset, let alone discovering that he's supposed to be a weapon master? Now I actually want to play this game again and see how far I can take that. See how much easier I would've had it if I just played more into the emphasis on weapons.

I love this game. Probably my favorite in the series, and took about 120 hours to complete.
I remember the first time I got to Haruka's section in this game. I was so excited thinking that maybe she would learn a dancing fighting style like Majima's in 0, just for hopes to be crushed
Haruka fighting is nothing more than a DREAM
or a modder's reality
That Haruka karate plot sounds like a Cobra Kai spinoff and I love it.
It was a DREAM to have this video posted
Not to mention the Forbidden Word, but I’m pretty sure (excluding songs) they say Yume like 480 times total in the game. There’s a compilation somewhere out there
What caught my interest, is that Haruka went through quite a bit during her chapter, then, it looked like she could really use someone. And Akiyama thankfully was there and stepped in.
I loved this game as a whole and enjoyed all the side activities, it was really nice to see some experimenting.
Shinada my beloved. The creature and the one true god.
This was a dream-like retrospective 😂
Gotta love these Yakuza videos so far and I agree about Shinada, too bad he was gone after this one D:
Is no one going to talk about kiryu's brilliant decision of leaving 10+ defenseless kids alone unsupervised?
My headcannon is that Kiryu asked Mikio and Nakahara to watch over them lol. I'm sad those guys never appeared after 3.
Yume
I dont have a dog, I AM the dog
I think it could have been interesting if Haruka told Kiryu she wanted to be an idol as a cover for a martial arts tournament, since he'd probably never be cool with it otherwise. Hell, she could learn alot from Akiyama just by watching him fight since she wouldn't have the raw power of Kiryu.
1:09 I can’t believe they had black Sundowner in binary domain
Me when Shinada can throw enemies to the ground, allowing him to do a number of heat actions that deal a million damage:
0:50 Oh hey the random anecdote I gave under one of the other videos about the circus that was the PS3 translation got in.
Nice.
This is the first time I see someone saying they enjoyed playing with Shinada and following his story, not to mention that being their favourite part xD
I've been conditioned to see the word "retrospective" and expect an hour long minimum video. A 13 minute one threw me off guard ngl.
To this day I still have no idea what Haruka’s plot is about, I did not watch one cutscene of hers.
Shinada is my yume man and I dream about him every single night
fr he can throw an enemy to the ground, allowing him to do a number of heat actions that deal a million damage
@@Yakazoo true he can also transition from a combo to a grab in 1 frame allowing him to throw the enemy to the ground and do a number of heat actions that deal a million damage
I Didnt know rgg make binary domain that game was pretty decent but have nothing ground breaking tho, i do agree with the spawn kuza meme even with a mod that reduce the spawn by 30 % it still way to much
Ngl Daigo theme makes me tear up every time and I dont know why
I got exhausted by chapter 4 of saejima's story so it tainted haruka/akiyama"s story, but then the legend shinada happened to bring it all home
First time a Yakuza games story made me wanna put my head through a wall
The third chapter broke my patience, and it was Shinada in general that got me to not like it, and then I opened my eyes, I realized, characters were starting to babble, often on one subject that gets hammered in and got old the first time I opened my eyes to it.
The only Yakuza/Ryu Ga Gotoku game I genuinely hated worse than Yakuza/Ryu Ga Gotoku 4 in terms of ending.
My dream, also known as "yume" in Japanese, is for Shinada to return in a future game.
The best part of Harukas section is no random encounters
Yakuza 5 is one of my favorites cause yeah it can be slow and boring but for me i like nearly all of it. It showed me i can enjoy playing yakuza in pretty much anyway whether its fighting, dancing, and everything else cause the whole game just feels so heartfelt
You forgot the fact that characters in this game says YUME a lot. Which is the perfect way to describe this game, except of course Shinada.
For those who joined the livestream late, Yume means Dream
everyday I wake up and realize there's no Shinada after 5 I get all depressed n shiz
bro remembered to upload
You can't steal something that I don't have. Yume.
9:44 This made me laugh harder than it should have. Lmao
Haruka being a martial artist feels way more in line with her character, especially how she was in 3 and 4
I love your idea for Haruka section, I was also a bit disappointed when I found out that you can't fight as her (except for that one shitty minigame).
Yakuza 5 Aka Welcome To idol Simulator Mixed with 3 big Men fighting for dear life
Yume (please don't break into my home and steal my dog)
6:34 doesn't it work the same way in 0 and kiwami? I'm pretty sure they're marked with a different color on the minimap
Holy crap your idea for fixing Haruka's segment is GENIUS
Me playing Shinada's story: "Wow! This might be the greatest game in the series!"
Me playing Saejima's story: "Wow! This might be the worst game in the series!"
Kiryu's stuff is alright ig
full shinada game... that is truly your dream....
My favorite game out of the franchise, thanks for the highlight !
5 was one of my favorites in the series. Just really fun.
You know snowiest is based when he has dmc5 music in background
I usually think this in every single one of the Yakuza games, but especially in 5, they could've cut a good chunk of the cutscenes out and still told a similar story.
Really glad I see more people are hip to what a legend Shinada is these days, feel like I mostly just saw haters back in the day.
Imagine if Haruka developed her own martial arts style after passing the bar exam and practicing as a freelance detective 😮
game should have just been called Shinada 5
yeah it should be called that because he can throw an enemy to the ground, allowing him to do a number of heat actions that deal a million damage
ngl i outta nowhere LOVE this idea of direction of what if the game was centered around haruka doing karate, the akiyama part wwould also fit in well as you mentioned, i just donnt know how kiryus part would fit in
I LOVED this game, from the very start I knew that this was the longest game in the series so I took my time with it, and it is to this day one of my favs in the franchise, and I pray to every single god there is that rgg bring back Shinada in any way to a new yakuza game
Thank you for giving my man Shinada the respect he deserves 👏
I will also openly admit that I didn't have the best opinion of Shinada's moveset, and that the game really is easy enough to get through it without taking advantage of it. But after seeing his heat actions and a few videos on how to actually get the most out of his moveset, let alone discovering that he's supposed to be a weapon master? Now I actually want to play this game again and see how far I can take that. See how much easier I would've had it if I just played more into the emphasis on weapons.
Would've been great, if the game didn't suddenly become Blockuza again the instant you press Triangle for any reason.
