Dead Souls is definitely a better "Black Sheep" than Yakuza 3 imo, because while 3 is weird mechanically sometimes it doesn't feel super far out as a yakuza game it just feels like that middle child in an awkward phase whereas dead souls has the most differences out of any game. could be wrong though
That is the second Yakuza game that I've been wanting to see get the Kiwami treatment. We got one of them already, but I need to see dead souls. I'll be more than willing to pay full price for a version of this game that gets all the fixes and love and care it deserves.

I'd like to see it remade in beat em up style of gameplay. Kiryu could have his gadgets from gaiden along with Yakuza style. Majima's Mad dog style fits perfectly and his second can be slugger but instead of a bat it's the shotgun he carries and when he enters ex Burst he can shoot it to wipe out hordes of zombies. Something I find absurd is how some people insist that the game is hot garbage, just to say "I don't know, I never played it." But at the very least, you're not being biased like these people. Back on the PS3, the game had few performance issues, especially around highly populated areas, but otherwise it was fine. The aim system was stiff, but to be fair, it was pretty much a first since previous Yakuza game didn't exactly focus on aiming guns and what not. The reason the story was over the top, was because it was meant to be the final game in the franchise, as evident by the beautiful credits scene showing casing every game to that point..... Then Yakuza 5 popped up. The story is quite decent, but the comedic elements are toned down to make the story more serious. But there's plenty of comedy, especially in the Substories. Other than that, the story can use some polish here and there. The game was very creative with how the threat of the zombies got overtime; You start with a small sealed off section of Kamurochu being infected with zombies, but as the story progress the infected areas become bigger and bigger, to the point where most of the map is consumed by the zombies. The variety of enemies was also decent, from the annoying Hostess zombies that screech and call in zombies, to the mutant freaks that pose a mini-boss level threats. But my biggest gripe with the game and especially translated games in general is how the English translation teams usually take way too many liberties, and write things that either make so sense or make characters act out of character.
Confession time: This was the first Yakuza game I played...I'm not kidding. I didn't know about the series at the time and was just looking for something to scratch that zombie itch. Looking back now, I'm glad I played it because the main series itself is just as fun. REALLY wish it got a remaster or a "Kiwami" style remake, but considering that RGG studios poked fun at Dead Souls in 0 and Kiwami 1, they likely want to pretend this never happened.
I actually played and finished the story mode of this game with my friend on RP3 on the Pc. It’s a pretty good spin off and remind me of arcade shooter games like “House of the Dead.” We did have to mess with the settings of RP3 for a bit to play it, but it played very smoothly afterward.
When it gets to the credits and you see the credits going through old games you realize that they definitely thought 4 was gonna be the last game which is funny to look back on and i feel like people look over things in this game that carried over what definitely carried over to 5 is parts of the map for sure heck even still has the single restraunt in the underground mall lile 5
About RE Revelations, I played it on 3DS in like 2016 and spent the entire time kicking myself for not playing it sooner. Of all mainline REs, Rev on the DS isnt even a mainline game yet it still stacks up right next to RE5 for me; of you liked the Lost in Nightmares DLC in RE5 Gold - Rev is like that, but like 6-8hrs longer with more old school enemies and more lore than a little inconsequential side story ever needed. Less content than a console game, yeah, but it was the return to form that I needed to see after RE6 killed the series for me. Completely won me back.
Tbh, the stuff you complained about with the localization is stuff I still hear in the "better localized" games. For example in Yakuza 0, you often hear people say "Kuze-aniki" and the text reads "Lieutenant Kuze". Or I was just playing Yakuza 4 Remastered and Akiyama and Kido are talking about dreams, and Kido says "Yume...." to himself (dream) and the subtitles say "Like what?" instead as a response to something Akiyama said. Saejima will say "Kyoudai..." and the subtitle will say "Hamazaki..." Expecting word for word literal translations is a fool's errand. That's not really how localization works.
dead souls isn't the first game where majima is playable, see the ultimate matches from Kenzan that did the interesting thing of letting you play as bosses against other bosses (including the final boss vs musashi) so technically it'd make 2.55 games where majima is playable
This game did a lot of things before any other game in the series did them. Sometimes it's only things my girlfriend and I care about, like riichi music in mahjong, but _sometimes it's playable Majima singing karaoke._ Also the big cheese himself, Gouda Ryuji, whose arm is...well, yeah, it's a great game. It also controls fine. The controls are _weird_ but they're not _bad._ There's three aiming modes, which sounds unnecessary, but it's pretty fun once you get used to it. The game can get janky on stairs and some other situations, and the frame rate is, like, 5, but I will always love this game.
More like yakuza PEAK souls Seriously though if we got a remake that fixed some technical issues this wouldn’t be considered a “black sheep” anymore. Also Ryuji lives canonically and you can’t change my mind
One reason I'd love to have Dead Souls properly localised and remastered to fix those two sections (the forklift certified Ryuji and Kiryu in a tank) is because the game is very fun to play around with, doing all the side stuff, minigames, dateable zombies even. There is a lot to love about this game and I honestly hope RGG picks it up some day as well as Kurohyou. Edit: Forklift Section is bad because you have exact amount of fuel you need to complete it and if you do one mistake, you have to start over which sucks ass. Kiryu tank section is so bad that most of the time you will end up restarting the mission until you get that one perfect run to finally complete it.
I love this game. The worst parts are the frame rate and the stiff aiming mode, but if it was remastered with better controls and decent performance, it could be an all-time classic.
Dead Souls is a great game, and yes definitely it does have framerate dips here and there and it takes a while getting used to the controls. However it never crashed for me, and I got platinum on both the Japanese and English versions of the game. There is very sad an unfortunate that you had random crashes. Due to the struggling PS3 hardware, this is the game the most that I feel would have benefited from a 60fps upgrade to PS4.
Just finished this video after finishing Dead Souls and yeah, alot of this sounds about right tbh. I did emulate this game though, so I didn't get any of the performance problems that I noticed was present when I played it on the ps3. Emulating this game is probably a good way to go, but you do have to mess around with some settings so it doesn't crash every 2 minutes as you mentioned. It is fun, the controls are jank, the story is quite good, but not as impactful as other stories as it's not meant to be taken as seriously. The bosses range from piss easy to incredibly annoying, especially that one boss with Kiryu and Akiyama. Overall, fun amd enjoyable game with some sections feeling like a slog to play through, especially on replays and in my honest opinion does deserve some sort of remake or ramaster.
God, it's strange to remember the zombie craze of the early 2010s along with that era of games where Japanese devs kept destroying franchises by trying too hard to appeal to the West. I think thay whole era sticks with me because it taught middle school me about how easily you can oversaturate a market and how stupid it is to try and appeal to a newer audience without a shred of understanding as to what that audience actually likes. Today I wish they ported a remaster of this along with the other Yakuza games to other consoles, but back then I can absolutely see why it was considered terrible. Still, it's sad to see so much interesting and bizarre content left to rot on a system that's more or less abandoned.
I legit want this to get a remaster on PC. Not just because it’d be cool to play this game with mouse and keyboard, but I think the performance could drastically be improved on better hardware.
I tried emulating Dead Souls a few months back and constantly fucking fought with the game to make the crashes stop. Gave up after losing several hours due to not being able to save. Didn’t find out this was a whole issue until I watched this. Go figure
Played through the whole game on RPCS3 two years ago, locked 4K30. Back then it would indeed crash every so often, but not too often as to actually hinder progress in a significant way. The controls are absolute ass and are far and away the largest hurdle between you and the joy that is many other parts of the game. It's got a lot of fun character interactions, great substories, and the music? Well, let's just say Akiyama's battle theme never needed to go anywhere near as hard as it did, but... It sure did. Amon was... Somewhat easy to fight in this game, apparently. Huh. Anyway it's a fun romp if you can get over the controls and figure out the proper settings for good, stable emulation. Definitely an interesting way to close the chapter on the book of OE games (Kenzan up to Dead Souls, basically)
Fun fact, the PS3 localized version of 5 dosent even have the names translated for the fighters in the Legendary Arena GP, as long as having all the protag's fighting styles be labelled as "street fighting" when thats barely true for the characters other than Shinada
All this game needs a good remake. Played it on PC (yeah it crashed a few times), had a lot of fun with it, but there are issues. Whoever designed the shooting controls never played any shooting games and the camera is terrible. Localization is also bad, there and there are some boring parts (like the whole sewer side activity). On the other hand it has it's great moments, some genuinely good ideas (like having a shared inventory and XP/levels/skills for all characters), and if it's not considered canon, the story is fun. Still more fun to play than Like a Dragon.
you making a retrospective video without even playing it , seriously?? i know emulator crashing is an issue but there is recommended setting on the rpcs3 wiki that can make hte issue less often(i beat the game with rpcs3)
Dead Souls isn’t even that bad, they honestly don’t even need to change much in a remaster. Just make the framerate consistent, allow fast travel around the quarantine zone, you have a pretty solid title.

Leon hyped asf right now.
CHALLENGE FINDERS ROY APPEARANCE!?!??!?!1?!?
Snowiest finally made a video about Dead Souls.
Only took me two and a half years lol
@@SnowiestAngeman and you didn't get to play it as the cherry on top
Yakuza is canon to the Dark Aether story
It felt more like Dead Rising than a Yakuza game
Still waiting for RGG to make Dead Souls Kiwami
every time i watch one of your videos i become more convinced that you are some alternate reality version of me from australia
One of my favorite Yakuza
Love the thumbnail
the hot secks scene of majima and daigo in drag was worth maxing the game
When it gets to the credits and you see the credits going through old games you realize that they definitely thought 4 was gonna be the last game which is funny to look back on and i feel like people look over things in this game that carried over what definitely carried over to 5 is parts of the map for sure heck even still has the single restraunt in the underground mall lile 5
Can't concentrate on video I got jumpscared by my old managers.
That thumbnail is hilarious 😂
I feel like you kind of lose your credibility by never having actually played the game your self.
You made the video for the sake of making a video.
I never knew they replaced Bahh Bahh Blacksheep with Rainbowsheep. I’m so lucky I grew up with Black sheep and not that.
Completely won me back.
this is RGG the game that I'm kicking myself the most for not picking up back then
Tbh, the stuff you complained about with the localization is stuff I still hear in the "better localized" games. Saejima will say "Kyoudai..." and the subtitle will say "Hamazaki..."
Expecting word for word literal translations is a fool's errand. That's not really how localization works.
Fun fact: Dead Souls actually did get a few soundtrack remixes... in Project X Zone 2.
Rpcs3 crashing on everyone
Meanwhile Imontheedgeofmyseat:
Playing dead souls on my steam deck!
I would love if Sega gave this game the Kiwami makeover! I played it back in the day via Gamefly and it was fun!
excited for the tale of Yume soon
dead souls isn't the first game where majima is playable, see the ultimate matches from Kenzan that did the interesting thing of letting you play as bosses against other bosses (including the final boss vs musashi) so technically it'd make 2.55 games where majima is playable
I'm pretty sure the first "new" localization was from Yakuza 5's first worldwide release in 2015
More like yakuza PEAK souls
Seriously though if we got a remake that fixed some technical issues this wouldn’t be considered a “black sheep” anymore.
Kiryu tank section is so bad that most of the time you will end up restarting the mission until you get that one perfect run to finally complete it.
this is the best game in the series simply bc we can become homies with ryuji
The loading screens were long as hell like seriously it's ridiculous
5:28
I don't know about that, Battlefield 4 had 107 weapons and that worked out well enough.
2042 need MORE guns!
Yeah nah you're not wrong. 2042 definitely has more guns than I have though that's for sure
basically yakuza if they just repurposed dead rising
I might be the weird one but Dead Souls was actually my first Yakuza game lol 😅😂
You didn't even mention the best and only thing people actually care about in Dead Souls
Majima's "Get To The Top"
I legit want this to get a remaster on PC. Not just because it’d be cool to play this game with mouse and keyboard, but I think the performance could drastically be improved on better hardware.
TALK ABOUT NON BINARY DOMAIN WHICH WAS DEAD SOULS 2
Best yakuza game, best zombie game
Should get a remake. The issues it has are so fixable e.g.Framerate and gunplay.
I bought it from the PS3 PSN store a couple years back. I thought it was fun.
One of the few shooters I like cause it doesn't (most of the time) make you go into first person.
I own this game and I don't think it's that bad but It was repetitive playing same missions however there's still enjoyment to find
you making a retrospective video without even playing it , seriously??
i know emulator crashing is an issue but there is recommended setting on the rpcs3 wiki that can make hte issue less often(i beat the game with rpcs3)
Not really into narrative driven games. Id LOVE to play this and buy it instantly on steam.
Dead Souls isn’t even that bad, they honestly don’t even need to change much in a remaster. Just make the framerate consistent, allow fast travel around the quarantine zone, you have a pretty solid title.
