I had a fantasy that it was possible to model things in C4D and bring the outlines to AI, and with this complete roadmap you just showed everything (and more) that I wanted to know. Great information, Pete Maric! You are too far away for the hug I want to give you :)
thank you. never thought of using cel shader without S&T before. nice tutorial. tip: if you hold shift when you drag a layer between psd files it will be perfectly aligned. or use the duplicate layer function into the other doc. same result. might save some time.
It's too bad you didn't know about using Shift when dragging from one document to the other. That way they line up perfectly and you don't need to fix it by hand.
Great tutorial! Do you know of a way to change the width of the rendered edges or outlines using this technique without Sketch and Toon? I'm using C4Lite with After Effects, which doesn't have it. Thank you!
Thank you Ross, glad you liked the tutorial. You can use the cel renderer, export outlines and edges as separate files. Open up your outlines/edge renders in Photoshop, duplicate them and use the multiply blend mode. This quick method will give you darker lines but not necessarily thicker lines. I use this approach when creating illustrations and it gives me control with the definition of my line work. It's quick, easy, and the rendering portion does not take too long. Hope this helps.
Thanks very much Pete, That makes sense, tho I need this for an animation, so it may be too many steps. I'm now able to access the full C4D, so can use Sketch & Toon after all. Thanks again!
Ross Ishikawa No worries Ross. If your Sketch and Toon setup takes a long time to render, you can still use the cel render as an option. Instead of using Photoshop, you would use After Effects multiply blend modes. Good luck with your project.
Hi!, thanks for the tutorial. In my Cinema4D I have the sketch and toon, but when I'm trying to import the material from sketch>technical in the content browser as you show at 2:21, the sketch folder is not there inside the presets, the rest of them is there, is there something I'm missing about this?, thanks a lot
Luis Rodríguez If you are using a different C4D version, the technical pen presets may be in a new location. Also, you can use any of the presets. I used the technical pen because it worked for this particular illustration.
hey i just cant get my pen out of the content browser and into the box for the line setting where you put it in. I cant even load it into the material manager or into anything anywhere! pls help
+ozr2222 There are three places in the content browser where you can find sketch materials (in R17). 1. Broadcast > Materials 2. Prime > Materials 3. Visualize > Materials > Sketch > Line Styles. This is the one that you want to use for this tutorial.
Excellent overview, very helpful!
Thank you Chad!
Thank you so much! You helped me a lot, and saved me lots of time!
You're welcome, glad you found the tutorial helpful.
Great Tute!!
Thank you!
Es el mejor vídeo que he visto! Felicidades!
Thank you -this tut has been a tremendous help!

High five
Saved time, good man, awesome video, keep doing the good work.
Thanks Endre, glad you found it useful.

Great tip!
Thanks for video, really cool, learned a lot :)
You are welcome Wolfy.
Thanks! Amazing tutorial!
Much appreciated Beatrice!
I have a problem, when I render with the edges (effect cel-rendering) I see all the polygons of the mesh....do you know how can I solve it?
go into the render settings, click cel rendering, uncheck 'edges', check 'outlines'

Yup, learned that after making the video :)

Great tutorial but I don't have the "Sketch" preset in my Content Browser, so I can't access the Technical... :( Any suggestions ?
Micheal Williams You might need to update your library in Cinema 4D.
my sketch and toon lines tab is not complete, it dont have combine radio option, it has onle 9 option wat u think is the prob?
2:19 import deosn't work in current version of Cinema 4D. Can you advice? (Why MAXON have to ruin what was working? 🤷♂)
ok, I've figured that out. You have to create new S&T material enter it, then click Load Preset and find that Tech (0.35 mm dashed line)
try searching for the technical line in the newer asset browser.

When I use cel render in the viewport it comes out fine, but when I render it to export it comes out white, what's going on?
where to download sketch and toon plug in??
pls help. thx you so much
+Amie Subhanan Sketch and Toon comes bundled with the full version of Cinema 4D. Not sure if it is available as a separate plug-in.
+Pete Maric thx a lot :)
do you know how to render black and white colors only with the sketch and toon?
One way to do it: Render settings > Sketch and Toon > Shading Tab > Model, select gradient > Play with the sliders and colors.
Is there any way to animate the wireframe? thank you.
als ya You can always do it in post-production using after effects and masks.
can this work on imported models
Absolutely.
hei, I don't have sketch and toon in the effect tab..do you know how to get it?
The only thing I can think of is if you are running Cinema 4D lite version you might not have this option available.
lite?
I have Lite but I'm not using it.
TheAJH3001 Yes, Cinema 4D Lite comes bundled with After Effects CC. It does not have all the capabilities as the full version.
oooohh
Can't hear you
Your audio is painfully low...
EdgarVenomous Sorry about that. Thanks for letting me know.
When I cel render on the viewport it comes out fine, but when I render to export it comes out white, what's going on?
Not sure Jerry. You might want to render to the picture viewer then try saving from there.
Pete Maric I sorted it out, turns out i just had to reboot c4d and it worked for some reason. You saved me so much time for my crit, thanks!
Excellent! Good to hear you found the tutorial helpful.
