Homemade Laundry DETERGENT Recipe
4 cups water
2/3 cups arm and hammer laundry booster
1/2 cup Sal Suds
I’m just a mom or four who wants to share some of the knowledge I’ve learned in my journey to use more natural products.

Soap doesn’t really attract dirt but requires friction to activate (like a rubbing boards) but our washers don’t generate enough friction for soap to be effective. Thank you so much for this recipe for detergent and for understanding the difference! I’ll look forward to trying this.
I wonder if the friction issue is why my grandma always swore by her older maytag washer from either the 70s or 80s? She hovered over certain loads to scrub certain items with a bar of Ivory soap before she left it to the machines cycle.
Ive noticed that she, my mom, & a few other older ladies ive met (who could definitely afford newer machines) wouldnt part with their older one. They all swear that some machines just honestly worked better. (And they watched very close!) Im sure by now we’ve all noticed the “disposable” appliance problem these days.. flimsy plastic parts, cheap metals, weaker motors.

Thank you! Decrease the amount of Sal suds to 1/3 cups to 4 cups water, as I’ve found it’s so potent, it was fading my fabrics! The decreased amount has worked much better. :) glad you found it helpful and thanks for the thumbs up!

Have you tried soaking your dingy clothing in boiling hot water, and then agitating? It should remove some or even most of that buildup.

Be aware that using a soap-based detergent will invalidate the warranty on some (if not all) HE washing machines. The soap gunks up washers. I quit using homemade soap-based detergents because my towels stopped absorbing anything and my clothes were dingy.
Soap that is made with an oil that contains fat, is the issue here!. What people do not understand is that Sals Suds is not made with an oil that contains fat.

I am going to try this when I use the Kirk's homemade laundry cleaner I 'just'mzde. Oops....I would have done this recipe. Love Sals Suds! I do have to say I have an agitator Speed Queen and have never had a problem with the soap recipes. I also dissolve the powder in hot water first. Vinegar as a rinse. Speed queens agitate hard! Maybe that's the secret. Still going to do this soon.

Many of the people who have had a "fail" experience using soap-base laundry recipes are failing to use it properly. A lot of the failures is just using the wrong type of machine (too modern, like the HE machines). Using a home made laundry soap requires a bit more attention to detail than modern detergents. We are used to just throwing the clothes in, dump in the cleanser, setting the machine and walking away. It's best to pre-disolve the powdered formulas before using to be sure of total disolving. Those with hard water get a faster buildup of soap scum, since the soap must clean the water of minerals first, then clean the clothes. Higher amounts of borax in the mix can help that problem. Periodically running the machine empty with some cleaning strength vinegar also helps reduce/prevent soap scum buildup. Thorough rinsing is also critical to long-term success. Soap works by 1. acting as a surfactant, making water "wetter"; 2. attracting and bonding with oily dirt particles, and; 3. sudsing, which helps float the dirt and bonded grease away from the clothes. Rinsing is important to insure that all the dirt, oily bonds, and unused soap are cleared from the clothes. If you are getting dingy clothes, it's usually from hard water or not rinsing thoroughly enough.
Good insights. Also, many people fail to use a chelating agent, i am not sure that they know what it is or what it does. I have been making soap / detergent for 2 years, with zero soap scum inspite of very hard water. Even my bathing soap is as clean as store bought.
Ya have gaskets in washing machines, l never thought of this, l bet vinegar is not good for it
@@philipbrazis8732 Well, you might be right about that if: 1. You ran every wash cycle with vinegar. Hence the word "periodically." maybe once a month at the most. 2. If you were filling the tub with undiluted vinegar. Adding a couple cups to a full tub and running it through a cycle will damage nothing.
I did not know about more borax. I only used it for two weeks and I see the build up in the drum.it’s in the holes in the drum.

People don't know the difference between soap and detergent.
They lack a fundamental understanding of the chemistry, and the processes involved.
Zote and fels.. are made for washing clothing they are not just a bar of soap. Many recipes for homemade detergent add detergent like a powder one along with the fels and zote along with other detergent boosters. Works fine for me for many years.
@@doloresleyva8810 They work well for HAND WASHING CLOTHING... and probably work better in old school wringer machines, and those with agitators where more friction occurs. Soaps do not perform well in modern washers, period, as they were never designed for this type of cleaning. If you exclusively run large loads in an older-style machine, you are getting the much needed friction.
@@doloresleyva8810 Remember wash boards? Same idea! Detergents clean in a completely different manner to soaps. Not much actual difference chemistry-wise between laundry bars, and toilet soap, or bath bars. There is a substantial quantity of animal fat (sodium tallowate) saponified by Lye (sodium hydroxide)Sunlight for example, which I use for spot cleaning/pre-treat stains, and hand-washing when travelling, says you can use on hands, etc... also these harsher soaps were once advised for poison sumac and poison ivy treatment...Fels Naphtha no longer contains a solvent, which was common in lighter fluid, and a type of benzene... it helped to break up oils and other stains, as well as suspend oils in solution for more efficient rinsing. Due to its links to cancer, it was removed ages ago, despite Naphtha remaining as part of the name. It was this particular solvent which provided the remedy of removing the offending oil from poison ivy and sumac. When the product was still owned by some previous owners, a solvent effect was obtained by subbing terpenes for naphtha, which are not harmful, nor carcinogenic, or toxic... from natural conifers, like real turpentine, which still has its rightful place in some medicinal products presently. These are very small differences to how soaps clean.They're still old-fashioned soap. Adding an optical brightener only affects a perception of whiter fabric, as it reflects more blue light. It is an optical illusion! It does nothing to make the fibres cleaner, or make them actually whiter. Decyl Glucoside is in many laundry bars like Sunlight, and it is an effective surfactant, but not as adequate a cleaner on its own, or when mixed with soap. If people were smarter, they'd be grating Syndet bars rather than actual soap bars into their homemade laundry recipes... Synthetic detergents in bar form, i.e. Dove, Olay, or Original Zest, which was one of the more famous detergent bars. No longer the case sadly, as P&G sold the name, but not the precise formula... There are many other Syndet bars which are marketed as solid shampoo bars... those could work more like a clean-rinsing typical detergent would, and would make more sense inlaundry applications, when combined with washing soda, or borax. I'm not sure why?? But, I've been making homemade laundry detergent using white Zote sosp, Borax, Super Washing Soda & blue Pyrex Crystals for about 15 years, I use 1/8 cup per load, for whites I add sodium bicarbonate. I've had no problem with dingy clothing. Our clothes, towels and even my white cotton tea towels come out nice & white and are very soft (I also use white vinegar in the rinse) we love how our clothes feel & smell. I don't do anything different, I wonder why I'm satisfied and others aren't??? Our machine is an HE

My hot water is turned off at the supply of the washer. I never did and never will use hot water in my laundry. I never had a bad load of laundry using cold water. Just one note Borax is bad for the rubber on these modern machines. I'm glad there are alternatives to using soap in home made washing machine detergent. 73

Should I just leave it out, or is there a different product you recommend? Truthfully, I wish I still had my Sears & Roebuck washer, the clothes would swish from top to bottom and back.
@@pederslilfarm9218 no it's about saving energy. My neighbor has a machine and there is no hot water hookup it may be when the house plumbing was upgraded. I don't have babies and that's the only reason I see a need to wash in hot water. Washing diapers which the lazy younger generation went to disposable type. our landfills are suffering now. Enough on that note. 73

Hello! I have used this in my HE washer for over a year now and it still works great. Also, on the Sal Suds website, Lisa mentions using it in HE machines. I did cut back on the Sal Suds, as it was starting to fade my fabric colors. It’s potent! I now only use 1/3 a cup per 4 cups of water and it’s been working better. 🙂 I’ll have to update the recipe. Have fun trying it out!

Sal suds is a great all purpose disinfectant! I use it all the time!
May I ask what's the purpose of making your laundry soap if there's not a cost savings? On Amazon the SalSuds appears pretty expensive. I've not seen that in any local stores. I'm not seeing a cost savings from traditional laundry soaps. Thank you.
I think it‘a more so you feel better about using less chemicals in one’s home. Detergents are great at what they do but a lot of them have dyes and toxins.

SalSuds is overpriced dishwashing liquid. It's priced that way for its cachet.
I don't see the point of this exercise. You're just taking a light duty detergent that's too sudsy for most washing machines, diluting it, and adding alkali. Yes, it'll be superior in most respects to all the alkali-heavy recipes for homemade laundry detergents that use soap, but it shares their defect of being alkali-heavy.
The spray shower cleaner video I haven't watched, but at least that's a decent idea because those tend to be overpriced too and the suds won't hurt in a shower stall.
You can make free detergent by boiling ivy leaves from the Hedera genus (about 40 to 100 per quart) in water for 30 minutes. It works well for colors, but not so much for *white* clothes - tends to turn whites into off-whites.

I do not recommend sal suds for people with allergies. It contains SLS, which can irritate sensitive skin.

I make something similar but because where I live the Sal suds is not available I use hand or body wash. The difference is that for 1 Liter of water I use a full cup of body wash considering it is weaker than Sal suds. I add to the water 2 full tablespoon of bicarbonate of soda . Then to reduce the foaming I add 100 mils of alcohol. I am very please how my clothes come out. Plus you don’t need to add essential oils because the body or hand wash have their own fragrance.
Laundry washing bars are just that. Laundry washing bars and are very safe to use in homemade laundry detergent especially since many recipes include a detergent and detergent boosters. I use zote soap grated, ROMA powder detergent and baking soda makes a great Laundry detergent. No problems with clothes they come out clean and smell fresh and no problems with the washing machine.

Yep 🙂 me too. I’m sure there’s an ingredient like maybe glycerin that would help it stay homogenized, but I find shaking it prior to pouring is a lot cheaper than another ingredient! 😆

Never used store bought fabric softener and fabric sheets they break down your washing machine as well as dryer and have too many chemicals in it which leaves layers on your clothing.😮
Don't over pack your washing machine and your dryer with clothing.🤔

Do a full washing machine clean every 6 months.🤔
Clean your lint Trey every time you dry your clothing .
Clean the tube in the back leading outside every 6 months rom your dryer.
And replace the tube of your dryer once every two years.
Never place any clothing that is too wet in your dryer.
If you can hand wash many of your items and hang dry outside it will save you energy and money.😍
I am sorry, I should’ve clarified that I wasn’t using any All liquid detergent, just the container. 🙂 We try to be a self-sufficient and natural as possible and yes, we do purchase a couple products to make the detergent, but they are more natural, less expensive and just as effective as the majority of namebrand detergents on the market. Great tip! Yes! Still using it and it’s MUCH cheaper than store-bought. I’m also so glad I get to reuse my old laundry bottles and I’m not paying for water any more! Win-win!

Hello, I’m assuming you mean the Dr Bronners Castile soap? Dr Bronners is actually the brand for both products. If that’s what you mean, I would NOT use Castile soap as a substitute. It’s actually a soap and therefore a surfactant, whereas the Sal Suds is a detergent and has differing properties, a detergent being better suited for laundering clothes in our modern washers. Hope that helps!
Dr. Bronner's website as well as their YT channel has short videos showing how to use both their liquid castile soap and Sal Suds for laundry. I've used both for an assortment of household cleaning purposes including laundry. They do not attract dirt to fabric. Sal Suds contains SLS which is a surfactant. Surfactants bind with water to wash away dirt and oils, not cause them to leave a film that attracts dirt.

No, actually it's soapless (by the strict use of the chemical term), but it is "dish soap".

Sal Suds is an all purpose cleaning liquid made by Dr. Bronner's. It alone will work as a laundry detergent without all the extra ingredients seen here. 1T. will work for an average load of laundry. Dr. Bronner's has short video clips showing how many uses Sal Suds has including laundry. If you have hard water you can simply add some baking soda to the wash cycle to soften it.

Yes body wash but you will have to use I pint per gallon of water and 100 milliliter of alcohol to avoid oversudsing....
The primary surfactant in salsuds is sodium laurel sulfate. Most cheap shampoos use this. Suave. VO5. Use less water in your formula to compensate. SLS is one of those “toxins” most natural Pearl-clutches run from in the first place. Might as well use Tide.
I what measurements in fluid ounces or ml per wash please, I'm British and go off ml and ounces. Or I have cup measuring so how much will I need per wash in cup volume.
Hello! If oz or ml is easier, I’d just look up the conversion online, but in cups it’s 4 cups of water to 1/3 cups of Sal Suds and 2/3 cups of the washing soda. I decreased the amount of Sal suds because it’s power was fading my fabric! Hope that helps!

Modren blue laundry soap has no soap - absolutely garbage. I use dish washing soap - it has soap bubbles ,what I grew up on ...

I'm dumbfounded how these homemade laundry soap recipes don't seem to understand the difference between soap and detergent. You CAN use soap but you can't use it in a washing machine, you have to wash it by hand with a scrub board.

I bet you don't understand it either. "Detergent" simply means "cleaner" and says nothing about its composition, only its function. "Soap" is fatty acid salt and says nothing about its function, only its composition. If you use soap for cleaning, it's a detergent.

I just have to say that there are oodles and oodles and oodles of people that has made homemade laundry detergent out of soap soap and they've done it for years and my thing is is if it didn't work these people would not be doing it for years and I'm not only that who keeps their clothes for years why would you keep your clothes for years
Over time it keeps the dirt in the towels and clothes! SOAP is not made for modern washing machines! The chemistry is completely different for a detergent! It doesn't work "for years", people just don't understand the science!

I would think that most economy-minded people strive to keep their clothes, towels and bed sheets for as long as possible. If you're a fashion-minded person that buys a new wardrobe to follow every new trend, then saving money using home made laundry soap is probably less important.
Difference is technology changes. And modern appliances arnt made for soap. With almost all now are water and energy efficient.
Might of been different in old wringer washing tubs or old school top loaders that use large amounts of water to rinse cleanly.
