The moment it was announced I never even considered buying it and I’m a die hard fan. PF is the reason I started collecting records in the Mid 80s. I just bought the $40 Lp of the Wembley concert, that will be fine for me. Thanks for confirming my original suspicion Mike, much appreciated !
The 20th Anniversary CD was far more exciting than this box and 30 times cheaper. I still have it in near mint shape. Plus it is a great sounding CD version mastered by the famous Doug Sax.
You went into this review with a negative mindset. This is a beautifully made boxset which pays respect to the album Dark Side of the Moon and gives it the deluxe treatment it deserves. If anything, I would remove the live disc, the DVD, atmos etc. I would only keep the items that are the original album on CD, the 45s and the vinyl. The materials used are top notch. The design is top notch. I think they put too much in. There should have been no material other than that which appears on the original album. And sell it for $100 less.
I trust Mikes judgement on the quality and price point on these type of things. I’m hesitant on pulling the trigger on buying this. I own a lot of pink floyd on vinyl, but I have become more choosy on what I spend my money on. For now I’m gonna hold off. I don’t see anything in there that I need
@Nicholas 24/96 is still low-res to me, why aren't they doing DSD?!?! Should they be educated by MoFi how it's done? Also the tapes aren't worth anything if they won't use them. They should consider doing real hi-res if they can't do AAA.
Mike, the current standard cardboard packaging for new CD's is the worst. Without the plastic tray (found in digipaks) many times the discs are already scuffed up when you take them out for the very first time. (Vinyl AND CD guy here)
I was also dissapointed of this boxset and I am a big Pink Floyd fan, I have all their albums on vinyls and Dark Side is my all time favorite album, but man... I hoped (like everybody else) that it will have demos or reharsal records, maybe even a concert film and less thos repeated stuf like you get 4 times Dark Side of the Moon album, c'mon... So I'm getting seperately Live at the Wembley 1974 vinyl and the book, I think it's the best choice here. By the way, it doesn't bother me that ot's not the full concert. I haven't seen or heard anywhere the bootleg versions so to me it will be the first listen when my vinyl comes and I just gonna be imagine that they did that 50-55min concert of the album tracks and that's it 😅
Phew, saved a lot of money. Bought the book (sold separately) and Wembley Live for 50 euros together. 250 euros saved. When will there finally be such box sets in 2 versions? Vinyl box and the digital rest in a second box. For the anniversary of one of the greatest albums in music history without unreleased material (Wembley was already partly available in other box sets), is a real disappointment. I can live well with my 30th Anniversary edition of the album, because it sounds great.
The best version of this would have been the newly remastered LP on Super Vinyl, the full Wembley concert on 4 LPs, reproductions of the original posters and post cards, a double blu-ray with all the digital content, and nothing more.
About 10 years ago I bought the Rolling Stones Exile on Main Street Deluxe box set - although to be truthful, it's actually more of a crate. Calling this box massive is an understatement. The box (made of 1/2" wood) is roughly 4.5' x 3' x 6" - about the size of your average coffee table - and weighs about 50 lbs. It contains the deluxe vinyl album, a lips/tongue sterling silver jewelry piece, hard copy book, and a T-shirt replica of the green/white football jersey worn by Mick & seen in photos during the recording of the album. But the centerpiece of the box set is a 3' X 2.5' black leather studio portfolio containing lithographs of 3 of the iconic 'freak show' photos seen on the album cover - each signed individually by Mick, Keith, and Charlie. It is absolutely jaw-dropping, both in size and content. Only a few hundred were made. Obviously it's impossible to compare that box set to DSOTM 50th - one is priced at $300, and I paid seven times that for Exile - but I really wish someone would have put half as much thought into this item as they did with Exile. I have no doubt demand would have been higher, and people would have gotten a real collector's item. I love DSOTM, but paying $300 for 'boxes within boxes' of relatively minor collector's material seems like a huge cash grab, IMO. I'll probably do what most people are thinking - buy the live album and move on.
As a die-hard fan, this is a wonderful item! Your comments point toward someone that only want the vinyl, not the memorabilia, which is fine. I, for one, loves the memorabilia! Comments like “what the hell am I going to do with this” are one-sided.
Couldn't agree more about releasing the entire Wembley show. I've had the bootleg for years, but an official release would be nice. Raving & Drooling from this show was released in 2020 as a WEB single. It may be included on some CD box somewhere as it says 2011 Master. But, this show opened with Shine On You Crazy Diamond and ended with Echoes. Release it....
This box set falls apart when you realize the nevermind 30th anniversary box set has 8Lps and a 7 inch including never before officially released concerts, and that's like half the price of this. lol.
The Pink Floyd camp needs to take some lessons from Metallica on box sets. Just to compare, the Black Album box set came with 6 records, 14 cds, 6 dvds, and all kinds of extras for around $150 - $200.
What about those of us that do have a piano and or a guitar? Wouldn't that music book be useful to us? Pretty pretentious to think that the world revolves around you, and everyone should pander to your needs. The live show is the Dark side of the Moon live portion of the show, therefore, the portion included in the dark side of the Moon boxed set
A complete waste, that seems to be the theme of this unboxing. I have the 92 Shine On box set. That covers all I need. Except for extreme collectors I don’t know why you would need or want this. Hey, just my two cents. Really, thanks for the video though. I did enjoy watching it even though I think it’s a rip off.
Releases like this turn me off completely. It's profiteering at the expense of fans and PF are one of the worst when it comes to taking advantage. I have the 30th so I'll Leave well alone and let some other sucker spend $300
Unfortunately you buying this at the full release price just lets the record company pat themselves on the back that their pricing is correct. EVERY single Floyd fan should have boycotted this. Its a poor relation of the Immersion box set and more importantly is being sold at a criminally high price. With a large enough number of potential buyers not going for it at release, the price WOULD come down to a semi-reasonable price? You've spent $300 just to slag-off what you already knew about the whole box set...and maintained the exorbitant price. Shame on you. Sorry.
They've remastered this thing over & over & it still sounds like it always has....muddy. A rat in a tux is still a rat. However, I can't wait for the 75th anniv. box...can you? Maybe it will weigh 20 pounds? It's the only direction any of this money grubbing can go.
Wow..! They couldn't even give proper jewel cases for the digital media. I am a mixed media guy. I love my CDs as much as the vinyl. Seeing this video... CDs in cardboard sleeves is a deal breaker for me. I won't be buying this set. Thank you for sharing.
I don't see the point of doing a review like this, if you're only interested in the vinyl just don't buy the set, it's not for you. it's like i just listen to the music, i buy a cd and then i complain because i can listen to it for free on spotify too. Maybe a fair price would have been 200/250, ok, is 300 too much? I have the solution for everyone, don't buy it! I would actually otherwise agree with the review if it weren't for so many unnecessary and subjective complaints. What to say is that the set is only for fans and collectors (and probably the fans who already have the Immersions Boxes from 2011 can save themselves this purchase too), if you're not one of those then don't buy the set.
As a analogue and digital guy, I still don't think I would get this set. I have the recent Grundman cut of the vinyl, an original cd, and the SACD from Analogue Productions that has a 5.1 mix. I really dont think I need anything else since my home theatre is not an atmos setup. I have a digital copy of a live performance as well.
Maybe the BIG box is marketing strategy. Its not going to get lost in a typical record bin. Boring package. With todays micro and cheap technology, a real prism with mini rotating light beam to make a real spectrum would make an awesum display.
@3:42 I can feel your pain there, I can't even imagine how amazing their concerts were back in those days.... If there are that many out there, it might be a good idea to buy one and sell it unopened like 30 years from now :o
Basically, it's just packaging. There's no session work, no stuff that was left off of the album etc. Not even a complete concert! Just a Pandora's box of the same LP repackaged again & again in different formats yada-yada. Oh, lest I forget... Comes with a large book of BW photos from the tour, but with no text except the last few pages which consist of what would've read as the captions for the previously viewed photos. Disgraceful!
Why would you leave most iconic thing about this album off the cover? I own a fair few records and not a single boxed set, they would only sit and collect dust and take up too much shelf space.
They didn't include the whole concert, because it's _Dark Side Of The Moon_ *you silly!* I saw PF for the DSOTM tour as well as Animals. They did DSOTM in its entirety, Shine On You Crazy Diamond, Raving And Drooling _and_ Gotta Be Crazy. Echoes of course, and for some reason (cough, LSD, cough) I can't remember what the encore was at that show. The comic book "program" was embarrassing in 1974, and it's 100x as cringe today. You'd think it was for KISS or similar 14 year old demographic. I'm waiting for somebody to apply 21st century technology for a proper remaster of DSOTM. There's no reason that every version to come since 1973 is progressively worse than the last. I'm a definite pass on this, even though it's an all time favorite.
For all who want the complete wembley show: Dark side of the moon part - this version or the experience 2 cd edition of dark side from 2011 first part - wish you were here experience 2 cd version from 2011 Echoes encore - Pink Floyd early days box set from 2016 (?) But still no complete standalone release of this whole awesome live gig from 1974 in Wembley, London.
The book can be bought separately from what I understand. There seem to have two different books related to this 50th anniversary. One of them comes with this boxset, but can be also bought separately.
I just went for the live album the box set too much for me - I was hoping they would do what they did with Animals and release the Bluray separately but not to be. Live album sounds great to my auld ears
@@williamsanders1552 I agree with @jonny bhoy, great sound and pressing quality. I haven't even cleaned the vinyl yet there are only few pops on the whole album. The actual sound quality is great, nice dynamics
@@LageUA-cam I didn't bother cleaning before first play, I made FLAC files from it, giving them a listen on headphones I haven't had any pops - so far 😁
About £100 too much for what you get! I understand the cost of producing such a product, but when some of it is already out there....You can't sell it for next to nothing. Let's hope it does come down in price, but when you look at how much the Pulse reissue box is selling for, let alone the original and even the Echoes box set, I doubt this will come down much. It may well increase! Why all the bleating about the full concert not being available? It is if you look for it, and considerably cheaper than buying this box set. Also, the rest of the concert isn't Dark Side, which is what this anniversary edition is about! Like a live rendition of the studio album. 😊
Man, after getting the immersion box set, and multiple vinyl releases, the only thing this has that i really need is the Atmos mix. Wish that was available as a single bluray
Seems like everyone including Mike sleeps on the 1973 SD Quad Alan Parsons cut..sounds killer..better than the 30th imo and alot of others..just look at the discogs reviews. Mike never mentioned the copy during his shoot out, not sure if he even has a copy..🤔
I'll buy the Dolby Atmos Bluray from you Mike. That would be the only item I'm curious about from this $300+ box set. But you're right, some of it is lloks pretty flimsy for that cost.
I’m eagerly watching as many unboxings as I can .. simply the more I watch.. the less I want this … only the Wembley vinyl is of interest to me .. will pick that up next pay day …
I didn’t buy this. Like you I’m not a fan of hybrid format boxsets, no use for digital. If they don’t release this remaster on vinyl I’ll be really pissed, so far I’m afraid it is just a cash grab. I’ve bought the standalone live album, but yeah, why not do a full 4 disk of that. I will definitely buy the book too. Why didn’t they do a proper vinyl edition with the 7”s, the book, and the two albums I just don’t know
To me Box Sets was like you open some "Treasure Box" which you do not know what is hiding inside. I wish they had any kind of shit inside and keep busy my search at the time and later when I open the box and listen the album all these things continue to keep me busy. When they release a box they do not release it by any person preference. They can not give you a box that suits your desires and you must stop to complain for 20 min video. They release one box to fill any fan desires and that is the reason for the combination of all these formats. I find the box set pretty cool. The only problem for me is that they do not give the chance to ppl to buy separate the vinyl and force them to pay 300 dollars for entire box set. On that I agree but as box set itself it was ok. Box sets should contain any kind set they can. Are Box Sets!
It's Dark Side - I don't care if it's playing on an AM station out of broken clock radio. I want it. I have issues with the physical product itself. Someone in the package design department kind of fumbled at the five yard line. This thing is masterful from a graphic design standpoint but things are just kind of randomly and haphazardly thrown in seemingly last minute. Also, it's construction in the only point in the package where it matters - the nest for the book - is nothing more than corrugated board folded into shape at perforated die-cuts. Instead of a finger hole (or triangle) to lift the book out, they just made the perimeter larger than the book, so it conveniently flops out. It's also in the lid that isn't and is the lid. Really a bizarre concept. It should be gold prism up, I'm convinced - but that seems odd. Getting beyond that, you have a few random yet important parts of the whole just kind of floating there on top of the digital media (DVD/BLU/ATMOS) folder that is - sweet christ on toast - the laziest thing I've ever seen. Someone made it in their car, I swear to you. An upside down child assembled it underwater. It is pointless, unskilled and heartbreaking. If the rest of the box set were Moving Pictures, this wouldn't even be Casio keyboard cover of Caress of Steel. Naturally though, all the graphic treatments and adherence to the original soul are stunning, making all this other stuff all the more tragic. There's a weird folder-type board? I don't know. Looks like a black school folder but constructed in some way about 7mm thick. Does absolutely nothing as far as I can tell but tempts the nearby collection of stuff floating around that just doesn't fit anywhere. It's all so beautiful yet so maddening. Oh here's a good one! They just throw the posters, stickers and other memorabilia in the vinyl jackets so they just tumble around and thrash the corners. Really, really stellar job. The design itself is just so outrageously good that this is....just. Argh. The type treatments, artwork, material selection (aside from the cardboard bits holding the 8 pound book) are just spot on. I bought it because in ten years I'll have been listening to this album for fifty and I know I'll be glad I bought it but I thought I had received a shipment of pig iron in the mail when I picked it up.
Thanks for confirming my fears of bloated product that I am unlikely to use. will just get the vinyl myself like you said, the Gold Box, would have been ideal, that lovely sweet spot of vinyl. they could have fit all of the Digital media, (including video) on 1 or 2 DVD's or Blue Ray. disappointed, but will be nice to save the money without regret
It's terrible isn't it Mike? You know they're ripping you off but being a Pink Floyd tragic you buy it anyway even though it can be upsetting. I'm still not buying it, but I feel like I'm starting to waiver! Nice video.
The box set is a celebration. In the intended context it is wonderful. All of the content is totally applicable. Why would it include a live version of echoes? It is not a celebration of the Bands entire career. And for the sound quality, it is different, not better, not worse, just different. Yes it is expensive, but a lot less expensive than an overpriced A2/B2, and that’s a good thing in my opinion. If I have a complaint it is the inflated prices of records because of this and other channels. Sorry.
They have been doing a terrible job with 50th anniversary records the last two years. Like with Lou Reed’s transformer and ziggy stardust. Nobody can get anything right.
The immersion box was much better and there’s not much in this box that you don’t get in the immersion. No Alan parsons quad mix either which is the best version in my opinion

The book can be bought separately from what I understand. There seem to have two different books related to this 50th anniversary. One of them comes with this boxset, but can be also bought separately.
Go figure. PF putting out junk. How surprising.
I'm calling it as the 2016 pressing these guys are capable of anything!
I just went for the live album the box set too much for me - I was hoping they would do what they did with Animals and release the Bluray separately but not to be. Live album sounds great to my auld ears
Glad to hear the Live album has good sound quality.
$300 that’s a pass..
Totally agree with you Mike. Way too expensive for what is in it. Like others here, I bought the live album and book separately.
Best part of this is Waters being stick to this record for people to not forget it was also him there 😅😆
If it is anything like the atrocious Animals remix - look out. That one was sterile, gray and under construction just like the cover
Marbles?
Thanks! Love your channel! Keep up the great work!
Man, after getting the immersion box set, and multiple vinyl releases, the only thing this has that i really need is the Atmos mix. Wish that was available as a single bluray
I bet it will be in Japan though!
Thanks Mike, always a good review. Thanks again.
Pink Floyd DSOTM is always a good Video ! A chance to sell every second buyer a Record Player !
Over priced. They will continue as long as people buy it
Yep, “One born every minute” someone mentioned earlier.
I got the live record so so so good
Can’t wait to get mine! It would be so great if the 50th LP became THE pressing to get after so many seemingly passed on this one.
Do you know already if the Album LP is analogue? Greetings from México. Huge fan of your channel!!
The art pepper box size wise is overwhelming and overkill IMHO
Seems like everyone including Mike sleeps on the 1973 SD Quad Alan Parsons cut..sounds killer..better than the 30th imo and alot of others..just look at the discogs reviews. Mike never mentioned the copy during his shoot out, not sure if he even has a copy..🤔
I'll buy the Dolby Atmos Bluray from you Mike. That would be the only item I'm curious about from this $300+ box set. But you're right, some of it is lloks pretty flimsy for that cost.
Nobody needs that...
The rest of the Wembley show will come in the 75th Box. Come on, we all know they have to milk this stuff until the sun burns out.
😂😂😂
Then there won't be any Dark Side........ it'll be all dark!
I love your analysis of these expensive records!! I couldn’t agree more!! I’d rather spend that much on some rare lp I’m wanting!! Great show!!!!
Too much box, not enough set.
I’m eagerly watching as many unboxings as I can .. simply the more I watch.. the less I want this … only the Wembley vinyl is of interest to me .. will pick that up next pay day …
It's all superficial padding to distract from the lack of any significant new content.
Hard pass for me, but I am curious about how it sounds.. Please do a shootout or review on the SQ and whatnot. Many of us are curious about that. 🙏
The full concert at Wembley is actually on youtube: ua-cam.com/video/wG7xzB0Jp4U/v-deo.html
Pressed at Record Industry
Super disappointing box set, I’m just going to buy the live at Wembley vinyl separately and I’m happy with that.
I just discovered your channel (I’m in the U.K.), really enjoy your videos, keep up the good work.
This is a new one, a complicated box set within a box!
That really does not look good 😕
2 out of 5 stars for a kewl box😂
And their lucky to get that!🤯
How the mighty have fallen!😢
Polylined inner count me in..
Thanks for confirming my fears of bloated product that I am unlikely to use.
will just get the vinyl myself
like you said, the Gold Box, would have been ideal, that lovely sweet spot of vinyl.
they could have fit all of the Digital media, (including video) on 1 or 2 DVD's or Blue Ray.
disappointed, but will be nice to save the money without regret
This is for dudes who "just gotta have it".
Does the Atmos version has anything to do with the QRP Acoustic Sounds SACD version?

November 16, 1974 - Excellent
The immersion box was much better and there’s not much in this box that you don’t get in the immersion. No Alan parsons quad mix either which is the best version in my opinion
I'll be interested in how it sounds in comparison to the other vinyls (and the digital version???) when that video is released.
This is DSOTM ... I understand why there's only this album on the live version
Greatest album of all time? How about an iconic rock album? Me, I will stick with my SACD.
