    fill the bolt holes wity thickened epoxy then put two layers of glass over the hull to deck then reinstall toe rails

    • @SailBros
      @SailBros  5 років тому

      I'm not sure glassing over the hull to deck joint is really necessary. The deck is tabbed to the hull on the inside and then through bolted via the toe rail. The rub rail will be bedded over the joint. What do you think? Trying not to add tooo much work for myself.

      @@SailBros On Dan and Keka's boat, "Uma" I am pretty sure they did what Jack is recommending to help eliminate leaks that they had between the deck and hull. Their channel on UA-cam is called Sailing Uma

    Sorry about the setback. On the bright side, you easily found the leak since there is no interior yet and a much easier project now instead of later.

    I strongly recommend a pair of 6V golf cart (GC2) batteries. Reasonably priced at Costco or Sams. If you really want to splurge get a pair of Trojan or Rolls L16. Expensive, but they hold a lot of power and will last a long time if properly cared for.

    here's a trick for dealing with a lot of bungs. drill i pilot hole in the bung then drive something like a dry wall screw when it hits the screw underneeth, it will either lift out or shatter the bung. good luck with them

    Another great vid and couldn’t be more timely, because I wound up removing my Toe Rails this weekend on my 1976 28ft Islander. I used a multi tool with scraper attachment to dig out about a .5in of the dried out Butyl tape used to seal the deck to the hull from the outside, then filled just that with 5200 and let it cure over night. That seam should never come apart. Then used black butyl tape to bed down the toe rail and to cover the 5200 filled seam. Don’t be tempted to use 5200 for the whole job. At some point, maybe 20yrs from now that toe rail will need to be rebedded and you don’t want you or anyone you know having to deal with pulling off 5200.
    Another small piece of advice. I would recommend you rotate your batteries 90degrees from what is in the video. Batteries weren’t designed to heel and in that orientation a good portion of the lead plates will be exposed when the boat heels. You can read more about it at the following
    Ink along with a ton of other great boating related info...... www.pbase.com/mainecruising/flooded_battery_orientation

    • @SailBros
      @SailBros  5 років тому

      Nice! I will probably use 4200 but I'll look more in to using butyl. I think I already have enough to do it. The batteries are AGM so I don't think that matters as much?

    If ANYONE suggest he re-bed the toe rails with 5200... I will find you... and I will... not do anything bad but will set you straight on the evils of 5200. ITS NOT A BEDDING COMPOUND!

    • @SteelDoesMyWill
      @SteelDoesMyWill 5 років тому +3

      But seriously gents, plan on bedding with Bed-It Butyl tape. After you are done clearing those rotten teak bungs, tape off the bottoms of all the holes and fill them completely with epoxy. Find some longer bronze (do no use stainless) flat head slotted machine screws. Figure out the length you will need so that when they are installed the aren't so deep into the toe rail. Re-pilot drill all the bolt holes center through the cured epoxy. Use the forstner bit to open the top just enough for the bolt to seat and get a 1/2" teak plug in. Also, don't be afraid to take an inch off the overall height of those toe rails, they are really tall and don't need to be. Now is a good time to consider adding some scuppers buy mortising out the bottom, but they must be carefully placed between bolts. And as if i haven't preached enough, epoxy pot the bolt holes in the deck and chamfer the tops, this squeezes the butyl tape into an O-ring around the bolt (but you knew this I'm sure).

    • @SteelDoesMyWill
      @SteelDoesMyWill 5 років тому +1

      This is where to buy the correct type of Butyl Tape (Home-depot stuff don't cut the mustard); shop.marinehowto.com/products/bed-it-tape

    • @SailBros
      @SailBros  5 років тому

      I am debating between butyl and 4200. There are already scuppers. I like how tall the toe rails are. It really adds to the look of the boat. Thanks for the advise!

    • @SteelDoesMyWill
      @SteelDoesMyWill 5 років тому

      @@SailBros If you use the 3M stuff, go with 4000, its the UV resistant version of 4200. The regular 4200 turns yellow and brittle really fast in the sun, like only in 1 year. The process for bedding and re-bolting is challenging without making a mess, I went through it when I re-bedded my Genoa T-Tracks and they were only 1.5 Meter long but have to be curved as they are bolted down. This is where Butyl Tape shines... Apply it the bottom edge of the toe-rail only, make little donuts around the bolts. You and your brother plus a third set of hands helps, bend the toe-rail to shape as you set just the tips of the bolts into the holes. Tap down with a soft mallet gradually until you can set the nuts on, progressively tighten down the line. The squeeze out on butyl tape is much neater and easier to clean up, no mess!
