  • CERAKOTE Professional Ceramic Coating Tested On Wheels. Full Prep Application and Results. In this video I show the exact preparation I use to apply coatings to wheels to offer maximum effectiveness. The CERAKOTE professional ceramic coating is very different from conventional ceramic coatings. It is a fool proof system to apply, low fumes, no tackiness and no risk of high and low spots. So far it seems to work well on the wheels I am testing but time will tell how this chemistry really will work in the real world scenarios. Stay tuned for updates on this product in the comments.

5+ week Update and the Cerakote Ceramic Coating On the drivers side wheels has FAILED completely. Now the car was exposed to 14 days of harsh road salt and other deicer chemicals on the streets and lots of precipitation. Is this what stripped the coating down I would assume yes but it has now failed. There is some slight beading on the surface but zero self cleaning properties means the coating is barely hanging on. My passenger side still is holding up about 80% from initial application with our Hyper Gloss Ceramic Spray Sealant. Rumor is that Cerakote obviously recognized an issue with their launch of this new product and are supposed to revise the formula? Let's wait and see as I am on the Beta test list to get a new batch whenever they send it out but things have been very quiet this month regarding this. Was the failure of the coating a curing issue as addressed by the CEO or was it just not designed for wheels? We will see in the coming months what becomes of this new coating technology.

I applied Cerakote to my 23 740i , 1 stage prep! Everything seemed fine for about a month. In between time I use honeydew foam ph neutral. I took a 1400 mile trip and 70% of it was in rainy weather. Once I got to my destination, I went to the car wash to rinse it off, I noticed that it wasn’t beading like it was before, I figured it was clogged with road grime. So then I used CLEAN SLATE and it completely removed the coating in more than 70% of the car. CERAKOTE has some explaining to do.

3 week update. the Cerakote Ceramic Coating is still beading nicely on the face and barrels of my drivers size wheels. I have driven through days of rain, salt and debris and washed these wheels about 12 times since application. They do not 100$ self clean even with wheel cleaner but they seem to still be performing well. There are a bunch of negative videos going around that the coating failed because of a curing issue and the manufacture has addressed that they are working on a solution. In my case the coating did not seem to have any curing or failure issue as of today.

Cerakote knows that there is a problem with this first version they released and will probably release an updated version. It is a curing issue and thus the different experiences from many users of this coating including me. It also needs the full 5 minutes for it to have the sweating effect.

Hi Mike what steps did you take for curing the coating on your end? Did you apply indoors with a controlled temp ? I kinda went overboard by having my car in the garage for 30hrs with temps at 71F but mainly because it has been so damp with constant rain I wanted to make sure I got the best possible bond but time will tell how this goes and I will update everyone in the comments of this video

Yeah the videos he made were just so obviously paid for, and i’ve seen some people do chemical tests and it really didn’t hold up. Also, there is a guy who made a video on it(it was an orange corvette) and he made an update in the comments saying the coating is not holding up well at all. He did all the proper steps too, full 2 step paint correction and proper prep so it seems like this coating just isn’t what it was marketed to be.

I wondered about the applicators as well. If you cut open the pads that the coats comes with it does have an inner plastic behind the microfiber so it really doesn’t absorb all the product it rubs out on surfaces of paint or glass very well.

  • @gruivis

Two Week Update: I have now cleaned my wheels 5X since making this video. So far the drivers side wheels coated with Cerakote are still beading perfectly on the spokes. There are now larger water beads in the barrels where as in this initial video the beads appeared smaller. There still is minor brake dust residue left in the barrels even after blasting our Auto Fanatic Wheel Cleaning Foam in the foam cannon. These wheels are difficult to rinse in the barrels with limited clearance so this tends to be typical. Also notice some brake dust residue all so slightly in the lug pockets now on the rear wheel but not the front wheel. After physical inspection the barrel wheel finish is horrible on these wheels and there is also micro pitting from stone chips throughout which might be causing more grab effect of the brake dust. The passenger side coated wheels with Auto Fanatic Hyper Gloss still feels slicker to the touch and have better hydrophobic performance and is offering better self cleaning action. On the passenger side coated with our Auto Fanatic Hyper Gloss Ceramic Spray Sealant you can actually see more brake dust in the foam run off from using our Auto Fanatic Wheel Cleaning Foam. I may post a short video on Instagram later today showing this so check that out. Is the Cerakote coating starting to fail I can not make that judgement as of today January 3rd but will update everyone as I continue to live with it and see how it performs. Please continue to share and post your feedback below so I can share with the manufacture direct.

Preparation is so critical and I cannot stress that enough. Considering the professional nature of my business restoring and customizing high end cars we always want to over prep so when applying finishes, adhesives etc we eliminate failures and come backs. Ive had this work ethic since I started working on cars over 30 years ago seeing all comebacks from other shops and constant lost money redoing jobs others did due to failures in prep

Seems like you’re not hitting the barrels on the driver side wheel as much as the passenger side with the pressure washer, hence why the passenger side barrels are cleaner than the driver side. Just an observation…

    • @autofanaticcars
      @autofanaticcars  8 місяців тому +1

my pressure washer is 2500psi at 2.6 GPM it’s a serious professional rig and I actually hit all 4 wheels pretty good and probably hit Cerakote harder and these are real results of two complete different products on the same substrate. Our Auto Fanatic Hyper Gloss Ceramic Spray Sealant does feel slicker to the touch as I commented in the video when I touched the spokes. Slicker means less resistance to grab which is why the barrel had less residue on the passenger side.

Thank you for introducing me to prep-all; i will keep that on top of my list next time i apply a coating. 'Other influencers' have suggested that IPA based prep sprays will smear the oils&solvents it's supposed to remove unless a 2 towel method prep is used. What do you think? Luckily for me on my Cerakote install, my Honda has never been coated before and i don't think anything but traditional wax had ever been on it until that point (except for Q2 wax on the top only). I do think that the Cerakote spray does repair/revive the coating if it gets messed up but that's kinda hard to prove for social media.

I dont really understand how your praising your surface prep abilities when skipping an iron remover. Your individual preferences aside it's one of the most important parts of decon and you using an APC with a clay towel is not a substitute.
If you don't like iron remover use less of it, use it outside or find a chemical substitute which doesn't stink such as the new iron remover from stoner.
I'm not a fan of cerakote. Complaining about a coatings performance without an iron remover is the equivalent to complaining how your coating performs after using dish soap.

    • @vetteconnoisseur9531

That's interesting...iron remover being identified as one of the most important steps in decon before ceramic coat application. 😂 Funny how ScottHD performed a longevity test in 2018 with 34 products on a test hood and some coatings lasted the 2.5 year span. His surface prep was a wash, clay, rotary polish, and degrease with isopropyl...not even a sentiment of iron remover.
