That’s Michael DeLorenzo! He was in New York Undercover. One of the really cool things about this video, or short film as MJ would call it, is that some of the guys standing in the background were real gang members from LA. Another Fun Fact The guy wearing the white jacket is the choreographer, Michael Peters, who also co-choreographed the video for Thriller.

To be honest with you this was the first Gangsta Music video. Nobody seen no music video like this before this video came out. Maybe in a musical something similar to this was shown before this but not like this. Those dudes standing in the back was real gangbangers from LA and Chicago in this video. Great reaction!

Great reaction! You never stopped smiling and how could you to the "King of Pop". Michael was also a global philanthropist and humanitarian. Every body from every color, gender and age group (tots to seniors) loved his music. Man this world could use another global unifier like him today.

Loved it ❤ the guitarist is Eddie Van Halen! One information about "Beat It" and that solo: Considering the game-changing impact the song had on popular culture, Eddie says in 2011 that "Beat It" is his favorite collaboration. Eddie Van Halen blazing guitar solo lasted all of 20 seconds and took half an hour to record. He did it for free, as a favor to producer Quincy Jones, while the rest of his Van Halen bandmates were out of town. "I said to myself, 'Who is going to know that I played on this kid's record, right? Nobody's going to find out'. Wrong!" he laughs. "Big-time wrong. It ended up being Record of the Year." Eddie Van Halen concluded Michael was a musical genius with this childlike innocence. He was such a professional, and such a sweetheart. 💕

This is one of my all time favorite videos. That dance routine has been burned into my brain for decades. A few notable appearances in this video: The actor you recognized, Michael DeLorenazo, was on, not only New York Undercover, but the TV series Fame where he also showed his dancing skills.
At the 1:42 mark is Cheryl Song, a popular Soul Train dancer. In various parts of the video including the 4:00 mark is actor Stoney Jackson who was on shows like The Insiders and 227. He's a great dancer too and you would get a kick out of seeing his performance in the Dan Hartman "I Can Dream About You" video.

A very impressive reaction 🎱! Yes, it was Michael DeLorenzo (New York Undercover). I see 👁👁 that you have reacted to Michael Jackson before: Ed Sullivan Show Jackson 5 medley (Stand!, Who's Loving You & I Want You Back), Got To Be There, Dancing Machine- Live, Show You The Way To Go, Jam, You Rock My World, Billie Jean, Billie Jean- Live Motown 25, I'll Be There- Live, Remember The Time, Remember The Time- Live, Human Nature- Live, Man In The Mirror, Smooth Criminal- Live, Blame It On The Boogie, All I Do Is Think Of You- Live, Dangerous- Live, Michael Jackson w/ James Brown at 2003 BET Awards, Dirty Diana, Say Say Say, All In Your Name, Rock With You, Show You The Way To Go, The Love You Save (Ed Sullivan Show), They Don’t Care About Us (Brazil Version), Smooth Criminal, The Way You Make Me Feel, Black Or White, Thriller, Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough, ABC- Live, Enjoy Yourself and Scream w/ Janet Jackson.
Beat It was released as the third single of off Michael Jackson's 1982 album: Thriller. It was written by Michael Jackson. It was produced by Quincy Jones and Michael Jackson. The song reached #1 on the Hot Black Singles chart, #1 on the Hot 100, #1 on the Cash Box 100 and #14 on the Mainstream Rock chart. It also reached #1 in Canada, Spain, New Zealand, Europe, Netherlands and Belgium. It has been certified 8x Platinum in the US by the RIAA. With over 11 million copies sold worldwide, it is one of the best-selling singles of all time.
The music video was directed by Bob Giraldi. The music video was choreographed by Michael Peters and Michael Jackson. The music video, which cost Michael Jackson $150,000 to produce after CBS Records refused to finance it, was filmed on Los Angeles' Skid Row mainly on locations on East 5th Street around March 9-11, 1983. To add authenticity to the production but also to foster peace between them, Michael Jackson had the idea to cast members of rival Los Angeles street gangs Crips and Bloods. In addition to around 80 genuine LA area gang members, the music video, which is noted for opening up many job opportunities for dancers in the US, also featured 18 professional dancers and four breakdancers.
Besides Jackson, Michael Peters, and Vincent Paterson, the music video cast included actor Michael DeLorenzo, actor Stoney Jackson, guitarist Tracii Guns, actor Tony Fields, actor Peter Tram, actor David Preston, actor Otis Sallid and Soul train Dancer Cheryl Song. The bar location shown in the latter part of the first minute of the video was also featured 13 years earlier in the gatefold and on the back cover of the Doors 1970 album: Morrison Hotel. Coincidentally, the name of that skid row bar: The Hard Rock Café, was also the inspiration for the London original of the famous chain of restaurants begun in 1971.
The music video had its world premiere on MTV during prime time on March 31, 1983. Soon after its MTV premiere the music video was also running on other video programs including BET's Video Soul, SuperStation WTBS's Night Tracks, and NBC's Friday Night Videos. It was the first music video played on NBC's Friday Night Videos. In November 2023, the music video reached 1 billion views on UA-cam. It was Michael Jackson's third music video after: "Billie Jean" and "They Don't Care About Us", to achieve that milestone.
The music video received recognition through numerous awards. The American Music Awards named the short film their Favorite Pop/Rock Video and their Favorite Soul Video. The Black Gold Awards honored Michael Jackson with the Best Video Performance award. The Billboard Video Awards recognized the video with 7 awards; Best Overall Video Clip, Best Performance by a Male Artist, Best Use of Video to Enhance a Song, Best Use of Video to Enhance an Artist's Image, Best Choreography, Best Overall Video and Best Dance/Disco 12". The short film was ranked by Rolling Stone as the No. 1 music video, in both their critic's and reader's polls. The video was later inducted into the Music Video Producer's Hall of Fame.
Michael Jackson said: "I wanted to write a song, the type of song that I would buy if I were to buy a rock song... and I wanted the children to really enjoy it-the school children as well as the college students". Jermaine Jackson has suggested the inspiration of the song: "Beat It", and its music video came from the Jackson family experiencing gang activity in Gary, Indiana. "From our front window, we witnessed, about three bad rumbles between rival gangs".
Michael Jackson first worked on a demo version of the song with musicians at his home studio. The drum part was programmed on a drum machine, and the bass line was a combination of electric bass guitar and Bell Labs Digital Synthesizer Synergy keyboard. This hybrid bass style was retained for the main recording session. The song begins with seven distinct synthesizer notes played on the Synclavier digital synthesizer, with Tom Bahler credited for the Synclavier performance on the song. The song's intro is taken note for note from a demo album released the year before called: The Incredible Sounds Of Synclavier II, first published in 1981 by Denny Jaeger Creative Services, Inc. The drums were played by Toto co-founder Jeff Porcaro. Steve Porcaro and Steve Lukather, also Toto band members, participate with synthesizers, and guitar and bass guitar respectively.
Eddie Van Halen, lead guitarist of Hard Rock band Van Halen, was asked to add a guitar solo. When initially contacted by Quincy Jones, Eddie Van Halen thought he was receiving a prank phone call. Having established that the phone call was genuine, Eddie Van Halen hired in a Marshall amplifier setup to use alongside his Frankenstrat guitar and an Echoplex, then recorded the solo free of charge. "I did it as a favor", the musician later said. "I was a complete fool, according to the rest of the band, our manager and everyone else. I was not used. I knew what I was doing-I don't do something unless I want to do it". In a 2009 Q magazine interview Eddie Van Halen recalled: "Everybody (from Van Halen) was out of town and I figured, 'who's gonna know if I play on this kid's record?'. I didn't want nothing. Maybe Michael will give me dance lessons someday".
About 2:45 into the song, there is an audible knocking noise just before Eddie Van Halen starts his guitar solo. Rumors were that an angry and drunk Eddie Van Halen made the noise, that he was telling the assistant producer to f--k off, or that it was the sound of his guitar tremolo being bent. The truth is more mundane, as it was an intentional sound created by Michael Jackson banging on a drum case. On the Thriller album credits, Michael Jackson is listed on "Beat It" as "Drum Case Beater".
According Rod Temperton, a mystery blaze broke out in the control room as Eddie Van Halen played his guitar solo. "Eddie was playing and the monitor speakers literally caught on fire", recalled Rod Temperton to Q magazine. "The speaker caught fire and were all thinking, like, 'This must be really good, this solo!'. Technicians had to race into the control room with fire extinguishers and put it out".
Michael Jackson performed the song: "Beat It", live with his brothers during The Jacksons' 1984 Victory Tour. On July 13, 1984, the Jackson brothers were joined on stage by Eddie Van Halen, who played the guitar in his solo spot. The song became one of Jackson's signature songs as he performed it on all of his world tours: Bad, Dangerous and HIStory. The October 1, 1992, Dangerous Tour performance of the song: "Beat It", was included in the "Michael Jackson: The Ultimate Collection" box set. The DVD was later repackaged as "Live In Bucharest: The Dangerous Tour" Michael Jackson also performed the song on the "Michael Jackson: 30th Anniversary Special", a concert celebrating the musician's thirtieth year as a solo performer. That performance featured Slash (Guns N Roses) as the song's guest guitarist.
    Critical Reception 🗣:
In a Rolling Stone review, Christopher Connelly describes "Beat It" as the best song on Thriller, adding that it "ain't no Disco AOR track". He notes of the "nifty dance song", "Jackson's voice soars all over the melody, Eddie Van Halen checks in with a blistering guitar solo, you could build a convention center on the backbeat".
AllMusic's Stephen Thomas Erlewine states that the song is both "tough" and "scared".
Robert Christgau claimed that the song has Eddie Van Halen "wielding his might in the service of antimacho".
Slant Magazine observed that the song was an "uncharacteristic dalliance with the rock idiom".

      Legacy 🛡:
"Beat It" has been cited as one of the most successful, recognized, awarded, and celebrated songs in the history of pop music; both the song and video had a large impact on pop culture. The song is said to be a "pioneer" in black Rock music and is considered one of the cornerstones of Michael Jackson's 1982 album: Thriller. Eddie Van Halen has been praised for adding "the greatest guitar solo", helping "Beat It" become one of the best-selling singles of all time.
"Beat It" won the Billboard Music Award for favorite Dance/Disco 12" song in 1983. It also received two 1984 Grammy Awards for Record Of The Year and Best Male Rock Vocal Performance, as well as two more American Music Awards.
Rolling Stone placed the song: "Beat It", at number 337 on its list of the 500 Greatest Songs in 2004, and at number 185 in its 2021 update of the list. As well as, the magazine named it as the 81st greatest guitar song of all time. It was also included in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll.
Shortly after its release: "Beat It", was included in the National Highway Safety Commission's anti-drunk driving campaign: "Drinking And Driving Can Kill A Friendship". The song was also included on the accompanying album for the campaign. Michael Jackson received an award from President Ronald Reagan at the White House, in recognition for his support of the campaign. Ronald Reagan stated that Michael Jackson was "proof of what a person can accomplish through a lifestyle free of alcohol or drug abuse. People young and old respect that. And if Americans follow his example, then we can face up to the problem of drinking and driving, and we can, in Michael's words: 'Beat It'".
Frequently listed in greatest song polling lists: "Beat It", was ranked as the world's fourth favorite song in a 2005 poll conducted by Sony Ericsson. Over 700,000 people in 60 countries cast their votes. Voters from the UK placed his song: "Billie Jean", at No. 1, ahead of his song: "Thriller", with a further five of the top ten being solo recordings by Michael Jackson.
The song's lyrics: "Show me how funky and strong is your fight", is often misheard as something you can't say on the radio ("Show me how f---kin' strong is your fight"). That line also has the distinction of being misquoted on one of the most popular sitcoms of the era, when Mallory Keaton (Justine Bateman) on the 1980s NBA television series: Family Ties, demonstrating her idea of good music to her hippie parents, sings: "Show me what's funky, show me what's right...".
In 2008, American Rock band: Fall Out Boy, covered the song: "Beat It". Their studio version was digitally released on March 25, 2008, by Island Records as the only single from the band's first live album: Live In Phoenix. The guitar solo is played by John Mayer. In the United States, the song peaked at No. 19 on the Hot 100 and reached No. 21 on the defunct-Billboard Pop 100 chart, also charting internationally. The band has since regularly incorporated it in their set list during their live concert performances.
The song has been featured in the films 📽: Back To The Future Part II (1989), Zoolander (2001) and Undercover Brother (2002).

      Michael Jackson Info 📰:
Michael Joseph Jackson was born on August 29, 1958 in Gary, Indiana. He passed away on June 25, 2009 in Los Angeles, California. He was a singer, songwriter, dancer, actor and philanthropist. His musical influences include: James Brown, Little Richard, Jackie Wilson, Diana Ross, Fred Astaire, Sammy Davis Jr, Gene Kelly and David Ruffin. Dubbed the "King Of Pop", he is regarded as one of the most significant cultural figures of the 20th century. Over a four-decade career, his contributions to music, dance and fashion, along with his publicized personal life, made him a global figure in popular culture. Michael Jackson influenced artists across many music genres; through stage and video performances, he popularized complicated dance moves such as the moonwalk, to which he gave the name, as well as the robot.
The eighth child of the Jackson family, Michael Jackson made his public debut in 1964 with his older brothers Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, and Marlon as a member of the Jackson 5 (later known as The Jacksons). Michael Jackson began his solo career in 1971 while at Motown Records. He became a solo star with his 1979 album: Off The Wall. His music videos, including those for "Beat It", "Billie Jean" and "Thriller" from his 1982 album Thriller, are credited with breaking racial barriers and transforming the medium into an artform and promotional tool. He helped propel the success of MTV and continued to innovate with videos for the albums Bad (1987), Dangerous (1991), HIStory: Past, Present And Future, Book I (1995) and Invincible (2001). Thriller became the best-selling album of all time, while Bad was the first album to produce five US Billboard Hot 100 number-one singles.
On March 25, 1983, Michael Jackson reunited with his brothers for Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever, an NBC television special. The show aired on May 16 to an estimated audience of 47 million, and featured The Jacksons and other Motown stars. Michael Jackson's solo performance of "Billie Jean" earned him his first Emmy Award nomination. Wearing a glove decorated with rhinestones, he debuted his moonwalk dance, which Jeffrey Daniel had taught him three years earlier, and it became his signature dance in his repertoire.
In 1984 at the 26th Annual Grammy Awards, Thriller won eight Grammy Awards, and Michael Jackson won an award for the E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial storybook. Winning eight Grammys in one ceremony is a record he holds with the band Santana. The Grammy Awards Show success transformed Michael Jackson into a dominant force in global pop culture.
On January 27, 1984 Michael and other members of The Jacksons filmed a Pepsi commercial at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. During a simulated concert before a full house of fans, pyrotechnics accidentally set Michael Jackson's hair on fire, causing second-degree burns to his scalp. He underwent treatment to hide the scars and Pepsi settled out of court. Michael Jackson donated the $1.5 million settlement to the Brotman Medical Center in Culver City, California. Michael Jackson signed a second agreement with Pepsi in the late 1980s for $10 million. The second campaign covered 20 countries and provided financial support for his Bad album and 1987-88 world tour.
The Victory Tour of 1984 headlined The Jacksons and showcased Michael Jackson's new solo material to more than two million Americans. It was the last tour he did with his brothers. Following controversy over the concert's ticket sales, he donated his share of the proceeds, an estimated $3 to 5 million, to charity. During the last concert of the Victory Tour at the Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, he announced his split from The Jacksons live on stage during the Jackson 5 performance of the song: "Shake Your Body".
MJ's charitable work continued with the release of "We Are The World" (1985), co-written with Lionel Richie, which raised money for the poor in the US and Africa. It earned $63 million (equivalent to $158,728,032 in 2021), and became one of the best-selling singles of all time, with 20 million copies sold. It won four Grammy Awards in 1985, including Song of the Year for MJ and Lionel Richie as its writers. The project's creators received two special American Music Awards honors: one for the creation of the song and another for the USA for Africa idea.
In 1984 Robert Holmes à Court announced he was selling the Sony ATV Music Publishing catalog comprising the publishing rights to nearly 4,000 songs, including most of the Beatles' material. MJ's purchase of the Sony ATV Music catalog was finalized on August 10, 1985. This would lead to a strain in his relationship with Paul McCartney.

Fun Fact 🕵🏾: In 1984, American parodist musician-singer: "Weird Al" Yankovic, released his parody song: "Eat It", which included a music video as well. The song's music video followed the "Beat It" short film scene-for-scene, with "Weird Al" Yankovic mimicking Michael Jackson's fashion and dance moves in a clumsy fashion. Rick Derringer played the guitar solo on his version.
