- Ever since BMW released its S 1000 RR for the 2009 model year, the bike has wowed us with its potent and exhilarating performance. Whether burning laps around racing circuits or racking up the odometer with heated grips on “high,” few other liter-class sportbikes offer the versatility of the Bavarian bike.
--
For 2020, BMW engineers went back to the drawing board re-engineering nearly every component of the motorcycle in the effort of delivering an even more adept superbike. We highlight the laundry list of updates and improvements in the 2019 BMW S 1000 RR First Look article.
We also gave it an initial shakedown test during the 2020 BMW S 1000 RR First Ride Review. Now we put it through its paces during our work week commute in this episode of MC Commute. Tune in to see how the BMW performs on the street. After watching this video, sound off in the comment section below and let us know what you think of the changes BMW has made to its new S 1000 RR.

Those fked up headlights in the last generation is what made it really special
Miss them! The first generation was groundbreaking. This one looks like Honda copied the Panigale
Next generation will have flip up headlights
@@jonc1901 you are correct
Yeah I love my 2017 looks. Alien Head forever!
I don't know why they changed those classic headlight of last generations for this generic headlight
That was a pretty comprehensive review. Some other reviewers even fail to mention the RPM flat spot. Good job Adam.
I own the 2020 RR and have over 1000 miles on it. Mine is (Brentuning) flashed and this dramatically improves the performance and character of the bike. Not only are the limits gone, but it’s smoother and sounds better. It’s amazingly fast and drivable. I’ve also done a couple of track days on the 2020 RR (and previous generations) via California Superbike School.
For a “commute” review, you should have looked at a bunch more of its features such as the Bluetooth integration (both phone and helmet), Nav, useful phone app, and the brilliant hill stop assist (it holds the brake for you when stopped on a hill so you can relax with a quick squeeze of the lever). The Sport display on the TFT console is easily selected, which gives more information such as max brake pressure, max DTC intervention, current and max left/right lean angle and a bunch more. It’s very cool.
You only use the programmable Race Pro modes when you want something special (e.g., do higher wheelies/stoppies). In fact you can select how high (either way) you will allow it to go. For the track, I keep wheelie intervention high so it only allows about a 6” wheelie, so when the power wheelie rises exiting from a corner, you don’t need to let up on the throttle. Just keep the throttle pegged and it gives the max amount it should.
The US-tune RRs at CSS had rough vibration at high revs/throttle as you describe. For whatever reason (maybe the tune), mine is considerably smoother. The handling, brakes, suspension, programmability, console and so much else are amazing. This is a great bike.
✔️🇺🇸💪
All my bikes have had the anti-roll-back-down-the-hill feature for decades. It's the little red kill switch on the right. ;)
@@MultiPleaser The kill switch worked great last summer on the XR I rented in Europe, largely because neutral was so hard to get.
lol, love that he stalled it!
I've been riding since '94 and I still manage to do that from time to time. feel like the biggest moron in the world when I do..
Good to know I'm not the only one and even the professionals do the same!
Great review. I appreciate your professionalism in presenting both the pros and cons. High value report.
That iconic shark gills look fantastic . All future s1000 should be coming with those gills. It's signature of the bike
Amazing how you covered every single intricate detail I was wondering about with my BMW S1000RR. I am coming off a Daytona 765 moto 2 and you have answered all my questions, thank you. SUBSCRIBED!!!!!
XWorks flashed my bike and I couldn't be happier. 44hp gain in 2nd and 3rd gear.
Am I the only one who sees the face of a Yamaha R3 in this lil fella?
Nope :)
Yamaha + Honda + BMW + Ducati have good looks right now. Aprilia is rocking their classic look a bit outdated not bad though. Kawasaki and Suzuki went in weird directions. I actually like the weird KTM split alien face thing, though it doesn't look sporty.
@@xorbe2 zh2 looks weird AF
Yes
Lol at 5:23, this is something that my dad would do.
Be funny if all the settings went back lol
That part was really funny!
although I like the asymmetrical headlights of the old model.
Love how dude makes wheelies look like the easiest thing.
Strangely, miss the asymmetrical healdights.
Nah it was generally ugly. I own 2014 HP4 and it was absurd how many people said this to me after riding my bike "The bike is so good one of the best i ever ridden but i'll never buy this bike because it's ugly AF"
@@Fearless154 beauty is in the eye of the beholder?
@@ojastushar8123 You're totally right that's why i said "Generally" Most people hated the asymmetrical headlights. I personally love it, It gives the bike it's own unique character everytime you see the bike at night you instantly know it's s1000rr.
I feel sorry for US buyers with those restrictions; I’m in the UK and have an M Sport with 2,500 miles on and believe me it’s way faster than the previous generation. And getting into neutral gets easier as you get more miles on it 😁😉
I like your honest reviews ! Seems like everything has to be reflashed nowadays. Cheers !
I like how you explain things objectively without being overly hype about about the bike's power. The rest of the review channels just blurs the speedometer and mumbles like they have a lisp.
14:27 props to not cutting this out.
My 2016 also gets really hot and it vibrates in the handlebars. Hands goes numb after about an hour of riding. Thought about upgrading to the 2020, but not sure yet.
HVMP bar ends take out most of the vibs. HVMP bar ends and Heli bars take about all of the vibes out. Ive owned many sport bikes and naked bike, Hondas, Yamahas,Kawis, BMW and the all vibrate.
@@ravenmoto5948 Yeah, I got the HVMP bar ends and it does dampen the vibration for about maybe 60%.
"We've already turned off traction control, put it in race pro 1 mode..." "...can't get it into neutral"
I don’t know about all that ECU talk, somehow other manufacturers like Ducati, Yamaha, and Suzuki can build a new liter bike that has power below 9K RPM, but whatever the issue is, it’s a real problem here. I demoed this for my video and I was surprised just how flat and limp this engine is below 9000 RPM. On the street its useless. It’s like riding a 600cc power-wise until you hit the explosion of power at 9K. Unimpressive torque as well. BMW needs to fix this bike. Also I had a hell of a time finding neutral and the demo bike I rode had over 2K miles on it so it wasn’t a break in issue. And I see the issue is here as well. They need to fix all of this for 2021.
Got the Bren Tune and it's an absolute animal. Definitely faster than the old bike
It's not acceptable to have "excessive vibrations" throughout the bike while moving up the revs - and it's one of the most expensive bikes in the competition.
Matthew Palanca why my CBR-1000SP2 is Sublime!! Didn’t come with no “Flat Spot”
8:08 that "just joking" sounded so cute. honestly felt kinda bad xD
Can’t wait for you to do a review on this bike with an unrestricted ecu on a track 👍
I wanna know who has 30 mins to watched these mc commute vids.
Troy Graham a guy like me btw it’s 4 am in my country 😂
on my lunch break eating lunch and watching this
That’s what work is for
Troy Graham just got home from work and I’m having a cold one while watching the full commute.
Set it to 1.5x speed
Powerband measured in UK makes over 200hp at rw on dyno.
What's the reason for turning traction control off?
And ABS , I thought these technologies supposed to protect the rider?
Only if you're stupid. They hinder competent riders
1:42: That reminds me of the Triumph Daytona 675R.
10:20 That sounds like a very uncomfortable ride.
That vibration would be a deal killer for me
I thought the asymmetrical lights were Motorrad's signature design choice just like the kidney grills are for the car division. It's sad to see it gone.
Good normal every day type review , all the reviews I’ve seen on this bike are track based , I don’t use my bike on a track so they are irrelevant , i ride a 2019 Bmw s1000R sport & I’m looking forward to see how the single R version of this bike will turn out , looking like it will be 2021 now so I might get a test ride on a double R soon to see what they are like cheers
When you cycle the power like that did it keep your settings or revert to nanny mode?
So looking forward to getting this bike in a couple years and hopefully they've fixed the neutral and brakes issue.
The big problem with too much tech, I just want to get on and ride.
AWESOME video as always.
Cruising at 4k rpm at 60 mph, with the beemer in fifth gear, is exactly what my 85 hp, 600 sport bike is geared at in 6th (for extra mpg). But, first is radically different. My bike hits 72 in first at 13k, while the beemer hits it at 10k. Launches are very difficult with only 85 hp and 45 ft-lbs of torque, but imagine DOUBLE of both. Should be easy, despite the slightly taller gearing. Doing the math, the S1000 should hit 93 mph at 13k. I remember an R1 from a few years back that hit 98 mph in first.
Monster bike. With a full akrapovic system and a remap on the ecu its putting out +15hp in the mid range. Love it. Might have been better learning the interface before shooting the video tbh - weird seeing you have to turn the bike on and off to get to the main dash when you just had to push up on the menu.
22k? Hmm... That's a lot of money for a supersport. The Asian bikes are giving some serious competition. Time for a shootout...
Yes, but an equivalent R1-M is even more money.
Great job man. Good question and answer!
Nice and balanced review. Thanks for the effort.
Do you think unlocking the USA restrictions (with ECU flash) could potentially reduce vibrations or makes it worse?
Are the vibes coming through on the foot pegs also?
I really like the new looks of sr1000rr😍😍😍
Magnificent this design.
How are the gears placed people?
Is it: 1N2345 etc
Or how is it?
1 - N - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 - 6
Just like 99% of all motorcycles.
Traction Controls works in conjunction with engine braking, so you should leave Traction Control ON
Such a high tech, extraordinary modern bike, packed with digital features, display, engine, etc. and you still have to struggle, play with the clutch and gas to get to neutral from a standstill..
Alex D i feel like that is a typical BMW thing. All bmw bikes i’ve ridden through work have had extreme difficulties getting into neutral. You have to rev it up and shift at the same time and be super gentle with the shifter. Otherwise it just hops over neutral every time. (Only ridden many of the adventure models tho)
@@HeyAddieImTojo That's typical with any bike and it has been for many many decades. I thought they sorted it by now.
Faaak... I almost fractured my toe last week trying to get that damn thing into neutral after a demo ride. After a minute or so of trying, it seemed to become locked in 1st. Nice bike but that neutral issue is very irritating for a new bike
It seems most quick shifters give you some issues with the neutral position.
Why do you need neutral anyway? Service?
Well done review Adam... NICE👍
American reviewers: "Disappointing engine flat spot"
Everyone else: " Incredible engine, even beats 1100cc rivals!"
Too bad about the restrictions!
He thought he could hang with that harley! "Real bike"
i went to see this at the dealer and it costs $30 000 Canadian with all the options. In my opinion this doesn't feel special compare to aprila rsv4 1100 factory or the ducati v4
When I went at the end of May, they had already sold their stock for 2019, and they wanted a $2k premium for a special order to have one delivered by mid-October. So, you'd barely get to break it in, before having to pack it away for the winter. All, while my friends in the US were talking about their having overstock down there, at the time. And, the dealership here would only do a special order with top specifications, so you'd be at almost $40k Canadian otd. They can fuck the hell off with that price, if you ask me. haha
You can buy a 1999 Honda VFR V4 in great shape for 3 thousand dollars & drive around the country.
@@ChrisJohn_444 i agree. Its not worth it
@@chetlovesamerica6783 i have a 14 r1. We're talking about new bikes. 99 vfr is a good bike tho
That jacket will look so nice covered in bug splatter. When you restarted the bike to change the screen, did it turn the rear ABS back on?
Outstanding commute review.
Is that a police officer in your right mirror at 19:00? Lol. Awesome review- this bike will forever be out of my reach but interesting nonetheless.
Interesting that it makes such close torque to the Ducati supersport s
We want full beans!!!
Good reviews, Adam. Thanks.
Cruiser Rider question: what does RR mean race ready?
I think, "Race Replica".
wait, is it 2020 in Germany already?!
No bro. The bike was made in 2019. For the rest of the world it is 19, but 2020 for the USA. That's it cuz the 2020 bikes debut in the early year of 2019 so its more or less 2019 or 2020
Yes, ze Germans are always years ahead. It's good ya. Guten tag. Achtung.
It's like FIFA. Anything released after the first 6 months of a year, gets name of next year.
It's called 2020 version all over the world officially but no one calls it 2020 when talking, except usa
Adam in terms of Vibration how would your compare to R1 or R6….
Great review
If you retuned the bike to remove the cpu limitations from the factory, does it nullify your warranty?
If you live in the United States you are covered by the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act. The manufacturer or dealer cannot deny your warranty claim if you have installed aftermarket or recycled parts, with a caveat.
Say if you flashed your ECU and your brake pads fell off, you would have a valid warranty claim. BUT, if you flash your ECU and your ECU fries, or you throw a rod and grenade your engine, the manufacturer and dealer might void your warranty and deny your claim.
It is tremendously easy for dealers to claim that basically anything that goes wrong with the engine can be caused by a tune.
“This bike doesn’t like going on neutral”
Reminded me of motonosity
It's true!
Motonosity 😂😂
Oh God these emission restrictions on motorcycle needs to stop
Totally. That extra 30 grand you spend on a car (vs a regular bike) all went to energy, like the diesel used to transport the parts and finished product, and the diesel/coal/electricity used to mine/melt/process/machine the iron ore, steel allows, aluminum ore, aluminum alloys, rubbers, glass, plastics, etc. And $30k worth of gasoline will get your bike half a million miles. Basically, a lifetime of motorcycling won't burn the energy it cost to get your car or truck to the dealership. And ten years later you spend that much on another car all over again!
Can't wait to see this against Ducati V4 and Yamaha R1.
rideFANCY R1 isn’t even close to the best Japanese bike. The Gixxer is.
@@noobasdfjkl how ?
@@noobasdfjkl R1 might not be comfortable for all but it's any day better than the suzuki . It has got a character which the suzuki lacks . Kawasaki is a better deal than both .
Commute time: Grom-45 min; BMW S1000RR: 43min
Actually S1000RR commute would probably be a lot longer than that because you would take the long way:) with twisties for added stress relief. Super Fun!
I can't wait to see the single r version. I bought a Speed triple r over the s1000r only because I couldn't stand the look of it. Super Naked should look more muscular rather than looking like a messed up spaceship. The current s1000r looks like a spaceship that just had a photon torpedo blown up in its face.
Does it seem to anyone else that this guy is braking really really late rollin up to some of those lights……yikes! My Duc has M50 brembo’s and I would never push them that much……but nice review dude! Stay safe out there!
Chris Lamar the brakes on this bike are amazing. My S1000R has the M50 and after buying the new RR, I want these brakes over the Brembos.
Vibrations from an inline 4 at 15:00? Maybe that's why even the little 310 also vibrates beyond 7000rpm- Genetic issue maybe
All inline-4 engine still suffer from secondary imbalance.
Check those wheel for cracks and understand BMW dealer told me they won't warranty them
How would you rate the build quality, material, selection fit and finish, the whole 9 yd as compared to the best Japanese and Italian bikes? Thanks.
Loved riding it, love the look, LOVED the brakes - they are insane. HATED the mirrors as well as how cheap the switch gear felt.
Picking one of these up next week. I'm about 5"9...will my.neck back and hand be asleep within an hour? I would like the bars to be like helibars...less aggressive...more upright..
U can see the gear when u push 1 or 2
Watch. That neutral issue will be next years feature when its corrected.
I like the gloves he’s wearing, wonder who makes those?
Yeh I liked those too..
What is with the neutral? I saw a few reviewers have problems with that.
No positive neutral finder, I guess, uh? Is this issue with this particular model or all BMW's?
jsprite123 I have a 2018 s1000rr and neutral can be a little tricky to find at times
The old S1000rr looks better and more unique.
great video - can you do the fireblade review and zx10r thx
What about the heat? Is it anoying for street/road?
13:57 isn't that just like V-Tec
If the Yamaha FZ/MT-10 is the Decepticon of of motorcycles the BMW S1000RR is the Autobot
15:38 how much vibrations?
The location of the screen is too far below the eye line of the rider, this is a complaint i've had of my last 2 bmw including the GS 850 I own now. On that s1000, it's practically buried in the chassis, I would not like that at all. As far as the feature navigation goes, it's not difficult to figure out. ECU tuning can be done remotely by some of the better shops, no need to remove it.
First thing i will change the exhaust
Bro all that shit... turn on this, turn off that, set this to max... I couldn't ride this bike because i would be uncomfortable riding it while feeling it's not set-up the best way... I'll stick with my 2006 ninja 636, i just get on and ride
....or, you can just learn to not be such a perfectionist, trust me ive been there and it doesn't feel good in life
Jefrod some people thought that about smartphones also but now they are the norm. All the electronics will come to be considered as normal very soon and in a few years no one will even debate it anymore.... got to get with the times my man
It sounds like a diesel 320d when it's idling...wtf??
you aren't there to actually hear it and you wouldn't say it's anything but a pure BMW when you do.
Ofcourse it does. It has stock exhaust and cat. What did you expect in 2019? Get a full system on that badboy. No one rides with stock pipe.
@@Skrydstrup9 I do, it's a lot louder than videos suggest, heck just an end can shorty is enough to break most noise regulations xD
This bike or 2020 r1m?
I have really been wondering for a while the truth about Adam’s gushing review of the R1 yet his seemingly bored mood with the BMW. What is the deal. He doesn’t SAY it yet I hear his disgust with the BMW and his love for the R1. I just wish he’d acknowledge it and say why.
Does the bike give you static?
There is one new bike out on the market with adjustable foot pegs for the rider and I can't remember which one it is do you know?
Holy crap look at all them buttons my bike has 1 the start button..
Agree. Wasting time to adjust here and there. Kinda stressful for me honestly. I know i know this is a superbike. But yeah man just wanna ride on a sunshine.
I'm not sold on the 2020 I'm sticking to a older year .
I don't understand why the euro emissions are there just to mess up the newer bikes. 1) The amount of motorcycles you see on roads is far less than cars, 2) cars give off way more emissions than bikes, 3) why not just adopt like a standard emission fee for a given region when buying a new litre bike, like they do with some of the diesel cars or w/e. Like who is actually benefiting from lower emissions from motorcycles? For the most part people in China and India and other developing nations have way more carbon footprint that they should worry about instead. Not to be insulting but when you consider import fees, and the price to get these bikes on the road in those countries these bikes are equivalent to sometimes like $50k-60k USD so the amount of consumers for these bikes are already low there.
It's not a safety measure to benefit the consumer, its just another compliance measure that some governing body sets in place and the manufacturer passes on the price to the consumer in these new liter bikes and they end up being a nuisance cause you gotta remove those compliance measures to get your expected performance.
no need to queue at traffic light that feels so good
How long can you sit there fiddling with the geegaws and trying to get it into neutral before you overheat the motor?
SteveSeiwald fingers would get cramped long before the fan even kicks on.
what was that at 23:00 mark?
Very nice indeed 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I doubt it is restricted in the U.S. when it's not in Europe.
Some unwanted stoplight chatting at 11:56 lol
I don't get how only you mentioned the vibrations and also the power problem..
I guess it's a good bike if you want lots of vibration after 5000 RPM's,,,,,,,, with nice smooth gearing,,,,,,,, and good handling,,,,,,,,,,,,
