Bannerlord Tactics: Infantry Guide, Volume II: Formations and Philosophies

- Heya fellas, in this series, each focusing on the different kinds of battlefield units, we get deep into trenches of Bannerlord and look at things on a very granular level. Let me know what you think and I'll stay hard at work(while at work), to make more helpful content for your Bannerlord experience.
Note that there are CLEARLY more statistically oriented guides out there(Strat gaming guides is your man for this kind of content), my guide here is based partially on intuition and experience as much as statistics, and often like real life, an amalgamation of information is more valuable than just statistics and 500 vs. 500 examples, after all, when are you ever fighting 500 Palace guards with your 500 Sturgian line breakers? You don't, it's always a mix...
In this second episode, we cover in detail various formations and philosophy for infantry tactics and then have a demonstration of the effectiveness of these formations...
Please comment, like and subscribe if you're interested in more of my ultra-late-game campaign, that may end up ending in utter despair, but that's the challenge of it. Any challenge where success is assured is no challenge at all.
My campaign is an extremely late-game campaign where I am resolved to give no peace to these scum Kingdoms attacking me - seven of the eight have been at war for years, with only Sturgia at a neutral stance. My family of warriors is now large though and with what remaining strength and valor we can must, we stand against the map of Calradia.
Join me on this adventure if you like huge battles, the use of advanced tactical maneuvers and intense Bannerlord gameplay, and subscribe to my channel if you want to follow along. This campaign is very lightly modded:
I use four mods:
Lord Retinue Uptier(Makes the enemy forces stronger, much less peasants and lower ranked troops)
www.nexusmods....
Improved AI Troops(Also makes enemy lords and their armies tougher by giving them a higher daily xp rate. This means you'll routinely face armies with HUGE numbers of the highest tier units, sometimes four or five times the normal amount in vanilla Bannerlord): www.nexusmods....
Death for all: This mod allows you to set the rate at which nobles die more often. I want both a harder challenging late-game but also a more realistic game. If you're cut down with a massive aserai two-handed axe, you shouldn't just be injured 99.9% of the time. It's a very customizable mod so you can just a little more death or set the death rate so high you get several deaths every battle. The number I often like is '10', some deaths but not a massacre of nobles...
www.nexusmods....
I also use the Dismemberment Plus Mod: It's highly customizable and works seamlessly with the new beta(and versions back to 1.28). I thoroughly recommend it if you enjoy carnage!:
steamcommunity...
I've also used Realistic Battle Mod in the past and highly recommend it for Ai and battle realism BUT I find the pace too slow for my taste and the AI is actually rather predictable after a half dozen battles. Still I wanted to put a plug in for it here, it's a GREAT mod and highly configurable. www.nexusmods....
Much of the music and inspiration for this and other videos in the channel are inspired by Epic History TV - probably THE best channel on youtube(and the internet for that matter) covering the Napoleonic wars. With amazing work Epic History TV takes you through the dramatic and incredibly story of Napoleon covering all of his most famous battles. I HIGHLY recommend it.

This has become an entirely new game for me since I started watching and trying some tactics, as opposed to just rushing everything with full cav, and that gets boring quick. This is the way to play for sure.
I concure friend, I concure.
Loving this series. Well in actual fact, loving all your series. You put out more series than Amazon and Netflix put together and yours are way more entertaining. For someone who's doin this for fun, I take my hat off to you.
Thank you mate, I'm an enthusiast first and entrepreneur second. I may never monetize the channel and at least don't plan to in the near future.
early bird catches the worm or in this case, VICTORY!!!!
Haha, there's plenty of viewers too from the U.K. and other European countries too so you've beat them out to tea time...
I wish I was stoned right now so I'd absorb all this info
This is deep tactics
One of my favorite victories I counter intuitively put my infantry in a gully between two hills against a cataphract heavy imperial army. I put my skirmishers and archers on the hill behind. They all rushed down the hill into my shield wall and got bogged down while my skirmishers and archers shredded them with clear LOS and my cav divisions rolled their wings. If I remember right I took 150 dead and 300 wounded and they lost 700 dead, 2000 wounded and everyone who didn’t flee captured.
That's awesome man, I'd love to see more tactic videos from guys when they have this kind of exceptional event. I only upload about a fifth of my battles because some are just meh lol...
@@HeadlessHorsemanProductions I know my nvidea has the capability to, but I’ve never recorded before.
@@joelhall3820 Neither had I... Not saying you should but there's a bunch of us guys out there learning from the tactics of eachother. Even if you don't make a big channel attempt, it would be interesting to see....
That idiotic system that doesnt allows you to say that a unit is an only shock unit or only wildling... That is why i quit doing mixed infantry or ranged armies. Such a bother
Can't disagree but there is SOME bifurcation if you tinker with it a bit...
ILove your channel man…..thanks for all the technical insights
You got it mate, glad to be of help.
Good work, very underrated channel!
Much appreciated! 👍
Trying hard to keep up with the amount of content you put out..and I will.
A lot of time and effort that is very much appreciated every time,
The blitz of episodes will slow soon as the weather gets nice and my wife and I venture out into the mountains more - so don't binge, enjoy! :)
And you fellas are very welcome, thanks for your patronage.
Wouldn't it make more sense to have the larger group of skirmishers on your left flank? That way their javelins will hit the enemy on the right side which is not protected by a shield.
Yep and this is something that I've been integrating more and more often but you're 100% correct archers and skirmishers better on the enemies right flank.
@@HeadlessHorsemanProductions I found an exploit when fighting against an army which doesn't want to charge my forces.
I take my horse archers close to one of the enemy cavalry divisions (about 220m away). Then I go and smack a few of them to get aggro and bait them towards the parked horse archers. When I go far enough from them, they will return to the original position and that's when I order the horse archers to loose arrows and shoot them in the back (as it's a waste to shoot them from the front while they keep the shields up).
I can do this until I run out of arrows or until the enemy decides they had enough and start the charge. I return the horse archers behind my army and will use them as backup cavalry to chase the broken enemy forces.
I know this is not your cup of tea as you're usually fighting overwhelming forces which rush you from the start. But I didn't reach your skill level yet so I'm cheesing my way with this sort of tactics for the moment.
@@AnubisMRM Nah it's viable to me, as ultimately we're looking for ways to beat the enemy. As your skill increases you'll need these kind of 'tactics' less and less and probably be ripping up static enemies with ease. Thanks for the tip!
Great. Love it
Thank you! Cheers!
In my game when renforcements coming they took place by the default troop place
Like:
1 troops
2 archers
3 cavs
4 horse archers
I have to use the micromanagment F3+F5
I think I clearly need to look into this f3 plus f5, I'm not aware of this at all!
Tha ks for info. I'm pretty new to bannerlords so this was very helpful. I have a silly question tho. Can u chose the outfit ur said troops wear. For instance , when u showed of those troops some had 3 sets of different appearances... can u select which one or is it just random? Iv not been able to select which armour set they wear
Perhaps with mods but with vanilla you cannot control the foot troops outfits, only your companions/family members.
A lot of pointing out he obvious and repeating the same again and again. This video could be 10 minutes long without loosing any info. But its valuable info for beginners.
You're probably right and I struggle to find the right balance of too difficult and too much complex information for more advanced players and then less advanced players asking for more details and granular information.
Whats the best troops and formation composition to simulate battles and win?
Too hard to explain in a comment! lol, I'd say 40% archers, 20% skirmishers, 20% cav and 20% heavy infantry for defense, squares, flanking, multiple archer divisions, cav for protection and quick counter attacks...
The reason why the legionaire is in the skirmishing group is that technically the spear they have (Pilum) is marked as throwable with a stack of 1. The AI never actually throws the pilum but this is the reason they are joining the skirmisher groups. You can check this by buying a pilum from an empire town and see they have the "Thrown" attribute. Very annoying since they can't use the pilum as a throwable but they are labelled as "having throwing weapons" during the pre-battle set-up.
Yeah, a few other guys have pointed this out AND the RBM mod does make them throw this weapon, although not well. It's something(like many in the game), that Taleworlds hopefully addresses in the future, though none of us are holding our breathe. Thanks for adding this comment here!
@@HeadlessHorsemanProductions Forgot to add, love the content! Been watching all the different series and loving them all, keep up the good work! Yeah it's quite strange that you cant be more precise in which unit goes into which group, this would be a massive improvement to tactical flexibility
@@Glo0ze Mods that do something like this but I haven't had time to explore more than a few dozen mods. (and thanks!)
More comments for commentary of commentators on comments!
your horse does 30 damage when its not even charging lol. How the hell are you doing that? Mine only does 15/20 damage at a full charge, yours does 30 at a trot lol. Ive got cataphract amor and am riding the best horse in the game. Did i miss an extremely powerful perk or something?
Top tier horse and high riding. Mine can charge through rows of infantry and deals 20-40 damage just running into him
There are cavalry perks that cause your horse to do more damage and I use the wadar hot blood, but I can't explain the increase damage otherwise. It's not even the highest damage charge from a horse I think that's the royal destier. I can only hope other people see this comment and shed some light on this situation. I don't think it's any mods I'm using that's doing it but I'll take a little closer look here and if there is some reason I'll let you know.
Great video man 😁 can u please turn down the volume of the game next time?
Will do, these few infantry guide episodes I had an interface issue with the volume and the mic that I have since fixed, thanks for the feedback.
How is there not a mod (or an existing game mechanic) where you can select specific troops for your divisions.
Seems it just ensures that a few guys in each division are sentenced to death on their first engagement.
They're probably is a mod for that but for whatever reason the vanilla game only gives you a hammer and not a scalpel
I run a mod called Choose Your Troops. It lets you select your starting troops instead of getting a random allotment. I started running that because I found the game weighted cav over other types. Now between the mod and the sorter I have found it’s pretty easy to set up.
@@joelhall3820 Checking this mod out THIS morning, thank you!
Skein is one of the best formations if your lazy. If you put all your troops even archers into a skein and make it 3 or 4 troops deep and order advance before charge it demolished whole armies
I do agree that scan has nice options for those who don't want to go so deep into tactics.
@@HeadlessHorsemanProductions or people without the RTS camera mod. I find it very hard to command large armies without the mod. Especially if the enemy is holding ground instead of attacking
@@philipcorbett1346 It does take a lot of practice, but I do understand, MUCH easier to run RTS mod...
What is your preferred shock troops ?
I think all have merit, but I think if I was choosing one it would be the aserai palace guards. I don't think any of them are bad though.
❤
holy turd... a tip.. turn off voice when doing these.. the commander having a freaking stroke screaming for hours as you adhd spam click nothing while talking for 40 mins is freaking terrible..
lol, understood - this is an older video now but I'll keep this advice tucked away for future episodes...
