Just a little infor on your hand setter. It's an old Disston set made for hand saws. The number correlate to the teeth per inch on the hand saw. Fewer teeth means a deeper gullet, and as the throat lays across the teeth that guide gauges the anvil down to the bottom of the tooth. Since you don't have enough teeth to guage off of, the steering doesn't matter. You are just going by feel. You could pretty easily build a hammer set and it would be more accurate, but if you're consistent enough for good results, keep on truckin!

Hello Hoods, I would suggest you sit on the interior of the blade when you use the tooth setter for the outward tooth setting, so you don't have to use the setter tool stressing the wrong part of your hand. I know it seems minor, but with 20+ blades to do, you will be less tired if you make minor changes to your process. Wonderful video to help us newbies in the milling business.

That wouldn't be bad especially since you'd be helping support someone local. Sadly I went to a local mill that makes pallets and they don't sharpen their blades they just change them out for new ones. Old ones get tossed in a recycling bin. He said for the price of a new blade and the cost to sharpen and set an old blade he saves money by not resharpening. If you pay someone 15.00 an hr. And a new blade costs 15.00 and it takes them an hr. From the time the blade comes off till the guy is done setting and sharpening a blade. Why not just have x number of blades being shipped each week. And you don't have to worry about when a blade is going to break and mess up other equipment. I said we'll makes sense. In your case.

@@HOODS well… and they’re even cheaper than 15, or at least they were when I bought a couple boxes of ripper 37’s a few years back but I still like and will be using this sharpening video a lot bc it’s not wise to just throw them all away…other option is to cut the old ones open and use them as a kind of barbed wire fence material, not the most practical. my only real question is (and maybe I missed you saying it in the video) do you notice any difference in performance after sharpening/setting your way? Like anything at all no matter how small in blade tracking etc? Because if it’s noticeable I might just go the route of rigging a chainsaw bench sharpener jig up.

I can see the blue color go through the tooth when you grind it which tells me the temper is being removed out of the tip. I’m wondering if there is a way to rig up a cold cutting method like a file that rotates or something that will not heat the metal tip. The sharpness will sure last longer…like a chainsaw will stay sharper if filed vs one that is sharpened using a grinder wheel.

Things that help me are simply I think about what else I can use the money on.
And I think about it as my life may actually depend on it. The struggle I've seen people go thru to breath from the c. Then to add complications of smoking on top of it. I like to think I'm bettering my odds of survival by quiting smoking.
It also doesn't hurt that I simply cannot afford to buy cigarettes. I have a little vape pen that I take a few puffs on in the afternoons just before bed that's when I most want to smoke. I must say that I don't much like the vanes as it chokes me up so I'm challenging myself to not even touch it for the next week so I can just get away from nicotine completely
I have tried quiting many times since I was 16 and failed simply because I had not just made up my mind. I always thought I needed a pack laying around just so I wouldn't want one so bad. That always led to just one more. And then just giving up. This time I will not fail.
I will not buy anymore and I will not bum another. I hope you will join me in quiting smoking. I know you can.

I've noticed the blades seem to stay sharp longer if I blue the tips. Some people say it takes the temper out of the steel. But they also don't know anything. Otherwise why would the manufacturer heat the tips to a blue color. I've been doing it like this three years and it works great for me. I also buy my blades from kenne-saw.com give em a call and tell them I sent ya. I still haven't broke any blades I've got from them. But the lennox blades I've gotten from woodland mills I've broke 8 so far out of 20 from my original order. They always break at the weld seam.

I think I may intentionally blue my chainsaw chain and see if it stays sharp longer.

David, I am no expert but curious. I was taught that you sharpen a blade tooth at an angle, and as you say do every third tooth. But you sharpen the face of every third tooth at the angle opposite of the way it's set. that way it puts the dust in the center of the cut, that way the center tooth will pull it out. Is this different for a band blade, as opposed to like a skill saw blade?

@@HOODS Thanks, going to try your system tomorrow. I retired from owning a production hardwood sawmill and had a big band band mill. We sent our bands out to be serviced because there was so much more to keeping them running than sharpening. Typical cost was $650-700 per band, new and $50 per service depending on what needed to be done. We ran each band 5 hours by the machine clock and then took them off to be serviced whether they were dull or not. Gullet cracks were the demise of most bands because of a hot spot generated by sawdust hitting a spot at the bottom of the gullet. These throw away bands are much easier to care for. If you look closely you will see that when you set the tooth the tooth it will twist outward not push straight outward, your grind will be at and angle not straight and your blade will wander making more wavy cuts in your board, A new factory blade is always set before sharpening

Yah but auto sharpeners cost alot of money that I don't have. But time I do have. I'm not pressed to be stressed about being super productive and not enjoy doing what I do.

Is there a reason you sharpen the blade before you set the teeth?

      No

You should always set first than sharpen. That way you keep the teeth square to the body of the blade

      I disagree

measure blade angle by degree not like 7 8 th it's either 8 or ten degree. the way he's doing is proper he just got the tooth spacing and degree angle mixed up. I'm a saw filer by trade

Every time you get the tooth BLUE hot - you know you've ruined it.
What could save your method and the blade tooth hardness, would be installation of a water mist atomizing cooling nozzle. I have one on my 2x 72 " sander. Otherwise getting most teeth blue means that your blade is now useless.

It'd be great if you knew what your talking about. Because ever time I get the tooth blue hot it's actually hardening it. Go learn something.

@@HOODS I'm a bladesmith/blacksmith - I do heat treatment of different steels - knives, axes, chisels - I never heard of hardening any steel by overheating it but maybe I am just unaware of 'your steel'

Watch a video on how they sharpen and harden the tips of bandsaw blades. They heat the tip to glowing orange to harden it. And needs done each time you sharpen. Because it's only case harden. The blades isn't tempered like knives

When you were sharpening the teeth on the bench grinder, it might have been helpful to see a few of them done in real time before you sped up the video.

you also gotta know how far you're bending/setting the tooth or your blade will dive in the wood resulting in a not smooth cut. you need a set checker your blade should be between 20 to 28 thousandths of a inch. just don't over set us what I'm saying
