Hey! I just finished the book literally and oh god you portrayed how I feel EXACTLY while reading the book! I did not connected with any of the characters, no depth, lots of things happening and at the same time you don’t know what’s happening.
Very surface level for the topics it was discussing

i picked up this book on a whim while on a vacation purely because the bookstore that i was visiting had an offer going on where i could pick up two books for the price of one, my original purchase being Murakami’s Norwegian Wood. i want to apologise to Murakami for daring to think that such garbage can belong in the same bookshelf.

I remember having some mild enjoyment from this book, but I was also vacationing in Mexico with absolutely no cares... Until I tried to get home 3 days later during c0vid lockdown

I finished reading this today and made me so mad. I wanted to DNF it like 6 times. Some creators have this as a good book. It got a Hulu show? What? I was confused a lot of times. Who even is Connell? I'm glad I'm not the only one who highly dislikes it. Serious topics with no context. This proves that anyone can write a book.
I was very confused also. I don’t get the hype? And enough for a SHOW? It did not have enough depth to actually shed light on the serious topics
I hated this book so much I thought it was the audio but no hearing you talk about it reminded me of how bad it was. Connell’s voice on audio is the worst male voice I’ve ever heard on audio😖

You did remarkably well to actually finish reading Normal People! If I hadn't read it myself when it first came out (I fell victim to the hype) I would have said that it was virtually unreadable! Early in the vid you refer to Sally Rooney's "writing style"...if only she HAD a writing style! Don't think I have ever been so profoundly disappointed in such an eagerly anticipated book. Mind-numbingly repetitive, tedious characterisation, plodding and cliched dialogue and I seem to recall that at least one character forces a smile on every other page - which is certainly more than this reader managed throughout the entire over-rated debacle.
100000% agree! I do not understand the hype with her writing I truly find it to be unreadable as well
I got that book a couple years ago when I first discovered booktube and before I knew any better... before I found the people I'm subbed to now... it was a larger channel that raved about that book, but didn't really say much else about it.. so then I see it at the library bookstore for $1 so I grab it.. Tried reading it a couple times and could never get past the first couple pages. Unhauled! Needless to say, I am more careful now on who and whst I trust 😬

I didn’t like the book but I enjoyed the tv show better even though I still hated all the miscommunication and these characters are just not super likable imo.
