The current, "definitive" story of Optimus and Megatron ironically mirriors the story of Charles and Magnus from Marvel's X-men. Both want the same ends but one favored peaceful transition and the other violence and revolution.
It's all pretty much based on the different philosophies of Malcolm X and MLK. Pretty much how does one achieve piece and freedom, though violence or diplomacy.

I really love how Frank Welker evolved his Megatron voice. He did raspy great, but the voice he has now is a perfect mix of rasp and intimidation.
The first time ever, I got the heeby jeebies from Mega was in TFP when he said "Behold the power of Dark Energon!!" That was when I really got scared 😨
If you didn't already know, Frank Welker is also the voice of Fred from Scooby Doo. It's crazy that the same guy has been voicing these two iconic characters for 30 years (Megatron) and 50 years (Fred) respectively!

Frank is definitely also someone that i would say is close to also having a title in a similar fashion to Mel Blanc, because Frank does some phenomenal work doing sounds for animals and the only other I've seen come close to matching Frank is Dee Bradly Baker.
And from that Baker is incredible for voicing 1,000 characters(all clones lol) but giving them a distinct enough vocal performance where you could tell which clone was Fives, Rex, or Hunter
Frank has done some animal sounds on The Simpsons. It's amazing.

"Your true lord and master has returned!" - You could not of picked a better line to start with for mentioning Prime's Megatron and him being Welker's return to the role in animation.
Ol' G1 Buckethead will always be nostalgic but Prime and Animated are two of the best incarnations of Megatron, showcasing more of how he is a cruel, manipulative Magnificant Bastard that's only maliciously violent when he needs to be.
Prime Megatron is just stunning voice work as a whole. You can feel Megatron's presence through him.

The scene where Autobot Megatron was faced with a physical representation of how many lived he'd ended in an ocean of flowers is _stunningly_ powerful. It's now central to how I see the character.

My other favorite Megatron is definitely animated Megatron, he just defines what it means to be scary
IDW Megatron is my favorite version. To me he acted like an anti hero, trying to do what is right for his people. Acted liked a revolutionist, until he went mad with power. When Bumblebee died at the end of dark cybertron made him realize he was no different from the cybertronian senate he was fighting against.

The version of Megatron I like the most is the TFA version, which I grew up with. Such a calm, cool and collected villain in the series.

So, fun fact. . . ages ago, my mom came home one day with this HUGE package that was every single comic book published by Marvel that month, including the first appearance of the merged Megatron-Ratchet in Transformers. I managed to snag the following issue while vacationing with my grandparents, a rare treat for me as a kid to read two consecutive issues of the same comic. So yeah, that definitely ranks as one of my most memorable Megatron moments (try saying that five times fast!) for a wide variety of reasons.

Aligned/Prime Megatron is my favorite iteration of the character, hands down. I love his design, his backstory with Orion/Optimus and just hearing Welker as Megatron again was so damn good.
Transformers prime was the first transformers show I watched and I still consider Megatron’s personality and backstory in this show to be the definitive version of his character
What's interesting about the G1 cartoon is that Megatron isn't the first decepticon but just their recent leader. That implies there was a leader or leaders before him. I would love to see some stories on that.

In the animated series, Megatron actually killed the original leader of the con movement and took over.
My fav origin for Mega is the slave/gladiator turned liberator of the weak and enslaved "lower caste" of cybertronian. The iconic line "till all are one!" Was actually Megatron's initial rallying call for the slaves to rise up in rebellion. It was only when power began to corrupt Megatron into a tyrant, that Orion Pax turned on Meg's and joined the Autobots, using his own early teachings against him as a rival, trying to remind him why he began fighting in the first place. Pretty awesome stuff considering it all started from a toyline with no plot whatsoever.

My idea for that was Megatron was made in the image of the first Decepticon. I even had a name for him: Star Smasher.
When I first learned that ol' Megs became an Autobot in the IDW Comics, I was a little hesitant to learn more, thinking it would have some kind of contrivance to it. But when I saw your dub of his conversation with Ravage, I found it amazing and one of the most incredible face-turns in fiction.
Was really, really well written.
I personally liked it a lot at the time. I'm a sucker for villain redemptions into heroic figures. Kinda glad they made him a villain again though, the writers at IDW were getting really sloppy and I feel like it would have taken cringier turns if they kept at it. Not sure what's happening nowadays but their Beast Wars series looked kinda cool.

One of the greatest exchanges in a series detailing some exceptional conversations (yeah, and silly ones, too).
It's a bit of an undeserved redemption arc, with him having a literal kill count of infinity. If he truly wanted to atone for his past actions; he should have remained Decepticon leader, and actually lead the Decepticons to peace. Instead of accomplishing little more than self validation, allowing active Decepticons still wreaking havoc on an interstellar level, with his influence. Defecting is the least amount of effort he could have possibly done as an act of redemption.

I’ve always felt stories where Optimus and megatron were friends had a tendency to be much more compelling.
The more Chris talks about _Prime,_ the more I want him to do an entire episode about the whole show.

My favorite version of Megatron is Prime’s Megatron. Such a creative and wicked design which perfectly reflects his warmongering conqueror nature.
It’s the perfect blend of the classic G1 silhouette and the terrifyingly monstrous look of the movie version.
I'm an old-school G1 fan, a Walther pistol aficionado and own a BYF 1942 P38, a Manurhin 1970s PP .380 P5, and P99 owner. G1 Megatron all the way. Most cried when Prime died in the movie. All things considered, Megatron got it the worst and lived through it. Lost his freedom, Cybertron, his mind all he worked for, good or evil. In a lot of ways, that's worse than dying. Prime, at least the suffering ended for him.
I believe his head is based on a real gladiator helmet
Something I enjoyed about the WFC Trilogy was that Megatron was unsure in himself. He wasn't happy the war was going on for so long and it had taken a toll on Cybertron. He did believe that he was fighting for the good of all Cybertronians, and showed a remarkable level of restraint when Shockwave proposed increasingly brutal and unethical ways of gaining power. I love the scene during Earthrise, where Shockwave is building a warship powered on Energon from living Cybertronians, Megatron visits a failing factory in order to gain insight on whether to keep going with a plan. The workers there practically worship Megatron, believing whole heartedly in the Decepticon cause. It deeply unsettles him when he realizes that he has to do increasingly brutal actions to save Cybertron.
Exactly, in the scene where megatron shuts the factory down, you can actually the reluctance in his voice, he knows that he has to do it to keep his plans going but it doesn’t make it any easier for him to sacrifice hundreds of cybertronians, especially ones who genuinely believed in him and loyally followed him
I love that episode.
I felt Jetfire was the voice of reason in the Decepticon's inner circle. Once he defected, Megatron seemed more open to the suggestions of Shockwave and Starscream.

Ich just loved the story of the TF Prime Megatron. His fighting skills are amazing, TFP has the best fights. But I also loved his ending in Predacons Rising, I still believe he saw the sacrifice of Optimus from a distance and had some mixed feelings.
Personally, I like all of his various incarnations. They're all great in some way or another.

But the retconned Black and Grey Tank does give a more aggresive and heavy figure, and I think it's great

While not the most nuanced. I have a strong attachment to the Armada Megatron. Something about the design really evokes the warlord/tyrant aspect of the character, and I personally love David Kaye's voice.

@@Spartan13047 Out of the roles I've seen him as Megatron in, I feel that the Beast Wars version captures what you described the best. He's intelligent and powerful, and he KNOWS it, causing him to be one of the most vain and arrogant versions of the character to date. It also helps his popularity that he's also one of the more entertaining versions of Megatron we've had the pleasure of seeing as well, making him one of the most memorable incarnations of Megs around, in my opinion
I just finished rewatching Armada and honestly it has the best versions of both Megatron and Starscream imo.
Megatron is a villain who loves being the villain, as he should be, and Starscream is more than just an upstart underling and actually has impressively unselfish motives for challenging Megatron.

It might just be because it was my first Transformers show, aside from the movie, but Armada Megatron's always been up there as one of my most favourites, such a unique design. Cybertron's also has a great look and both of them have my favourite rivalries with Starscream as well.
I agree with you there bud. I had the megatron from armada and starscream. They were so cool to me they were the only decepticons I had for a while because in my head they could take down anything by themselves. XD

The fact that Megatron is himself a weapon that can only use his full power with the aid of another is actually a very interesting detail. Namely he has to trust his men to use him as a proper weapon. He's powerful on his own however he need someone to pull the trigger to use his full abilities.
I don’t know why, but I always liked his line: “I still function.” It’s iconic to me.

Worth the wait? It was worth every single second of it! I actually had an interview with Bob Budiansky in which he told me that Megatron was one of the names that he felt the proudest, and well, it is a really great name. And this episode actually was fantastic! It's 3:26 here in my country and I have college lessons in 8 hours, but it doesn't matter. All Hail Megatron!
Turning Megatron from a Pistol Gun into a Tank was so cool.
The early to mid 2000s was the golden age of Megatron designs IMO. I love how different and incredibly unique each of the designs are from eachother. Armada would have to be my favorite design.

Megatron has turned a corner and become a good guy, like in IDW, in the new animated series, Transformers: Earthspark, with a Tillrotor alternate mode similar to Animated and voiced by Game of Thrones actor Rory McCann. I'm loving it already!
My favorite version of Megatron HAS to be the IDW comics version. His turn to the Autobots caught me by complete surprise when I first saw it, and he’s grown to be one of my favorite characters in the comic altogether

The entire MTMTE/Lost Light run has to be one of my favourite Megatron stories, and not just because of the novelty of Megatron seeking to atone--seeing him getting more interactions with other characters outside of combat was great. It really gave you a sense of why just so many would follow a guy like him, by showing his poetic side and his more charismatic qualities. The inherent comedy of him working alongside Rodimus was great as well.
I like megaton being a tank, makes sense with his canon.

I really adore Megatron's Prime design and its brutalist (in lack of a better word) aesthetic with its thick, barbed, undecorated metal.
Old IDW, Shattered Glass and Prime are my all time favourite Megatrons. For IDW I loved seeing his backstory, how he was able to influence people through his writing rather than fear, why he went down the path he did, becoming an Autobot and joining the Lost Light, forming somewhat of a relationship with Ultra Magnus. Definitely my favourite. With Shattered Glass I love seeing a more humble and kind natured Megatron who doesn’t want or like the titles “Lord” or “The Mighty”. For Prime I just love seeing a pure evil Megatron who is intimidating and gives off a presence of power whenever he’s on screen. Not to mention Frank Welker’s phenomenal performance.
The Beast Wars and Unicron trilogy Versions of Megatron were the first two versions of the character I was aware of. Also, I hope you plan on doing the basics on Laserbeak later down the line.

@@Karlos1234ify I learned of G1 Megatron during my early high school years. What I didn’t like about the orginal Soundwave and Megatron is that they were the only ones out of the original line up of Decepticons along with Reflector not to have vehicle modes.

The Megatrons of the early 2000's (minus Energon) will always be the most memorable ones to me. Didn't learn about the Beast era or 80's Megatron until much later.
my favorite versions are the TFA which made him a cool calm and cunning villian & the Alligned/Prime version which gave him more depth & back story as well as an initially good reason behind him starting the great war in the first place
I love Megatron. The "You are being deceived" IDW revolutionary origin is amazing. He and Galvatron in the cartoon are hilarious and always great with quips and bouts of insanity.

I HAVE WAITED SO LONG FOR THIS! THANK YOU! Megatronus is one of my fave characters, more specifically his variants where he started as a gladiator and sought to lift up the working class
One of my favorite incarnation of Megatron: The Original Live-action trilogy Megatron and Hugo Weaving as his voice. While Frank Welker, I can feel the menace and such unnerving tone from 07-11 Megatron by Hugo Weaving. He even sported a monstrous design that, at first glance, looks scary. I do like the other incarnations of Megatron, but the movie version is something to remember. Plus, I rather hear Frank's voice as Soundwave any day.

Remember how everyone says Soundwave is loyal to Megatron? He seemed perfectly fine with Scream throwing Megatron out the airlock.
Then Soundwave wanted to be declared leader.

Personally, I don't even need a complete redesign, it would just be nice to see then do something even a little different.
See I just wish they would expand their minds a little and create transformers with alt mode being vehicles never considered before.

I loved the Aligned version most, it made me love the character forever to this day!
Honestly I kinda took the thing in Aligned with the Council "being swayed by Optimus's words of peace" as probably being AT LEAST a LITTLE BIT more in reality seeing him and going "ah, here's a nice moderate we can stonewall for basically as long as we want" and taking him as the better option to save their hides.

My favourite Megs? Why, it has to be my very first one, the Armada Megatron. Always loved his more dark humor behaviour, and I think the japanese mecha tones really fit him, taken to a high in Cybertron with that huge Samurai helmet.
I also really like TFA for being the coolest and more sinister one, and IDW 2005 because of his fantastic redemption arc.
TFA Megatron is my personal favourite depiction of any villain that doesn't have clear motives for being evil other than being power-hungry. And I'm glad to see more people appreciating Armada Megs.
I prefer his Lost Light take because it reflects on his past to see what he sought was down a different path. He wanted freedom, freedom from any control. I can respect that, having the choice of agency.
TFP Megatron and IDW 1 (MTMTE/Lost Light) Megatron are my personal favourite iterations of the character. (I could write about this for hours, but I'll leave it simple-- For now!) Thanks for another great Basics video. :)
Congratulations on Hitting 150 Subs. My Favorite Megatron is the Beast Wars one, but if the talk about the Orignal that would be IDW´s first story Megatron, the Transformers Prime one and The Galaxy Force / Cybertron Master Megatron / Master Galvatron.

The green and purple G2 tank was one of my favorite transformers toys.
I really like Megatron in the War for Cybertron series as well. They are a little inconsistent with his character, but overall I like that they are trying to make him a more sympathetic villain with a pure motivation that is driving him to be one of his most evil incarnations

Thanks for the video, Chris, about my favorite Transformer of all time. My favorite incarnation of thr silver old tyrant is the IDW one, for having a tragic background: an idealistic intellectual who would become a scourge to not just the Autobots, but Cybertron as well. But, after Shockwave's Dark Cybertron scheme, he chose to join the Lost Light to atone for his crimes and return to being what he once was before being victim of the Autobots' regime, despite having been beyond salvation.
I didn’t really grow up loving transformers. I watched Beast Wars and Armada when they were on and I saw the live action movies but it wasn’t until I saw a clip from Prime explaining Megatrons backstory that got me somewhat interested and leading me to find this channel, which inspired me to watched the War for Cybertron trilogy and absolutely loved it. So I guess that’s my favorite version of megatron.

I have to say that the prime version is my favorite iteration of the character.

Teletran was definitely trolling when he scanned vehicles for the other Transformers but a small gun for Megatron in the G1 cartoon. 😂😂😂

Super Megatron and Ultra Megatron both deserved to have toy versions made of them. The spaceship modes were great. Imagine if those versions of Megatron had been animated for TV. I would go for that idea.
Megatron from the align continuity it's one of my most favorite ones who explains the story and I'm sad this episode was short

Also I didn’t get to do this but if I had to pick a favorite Megatron (Minus BW), I’d have to say between Armada Megatron and Prime Megatron.

Congrats on the Milestones m8, and as expected a great video on one of the series most important and iconic characters, definitely my favourite villain in the series.
You can’t go wrong wit the OG Megs. I didn’t mind the WFC Megs. I actually felt a little sympathy towards him. Anyways, I love his tank forms more than the iconic pistol. It just worked better and it fits his ruthless personality.

Animated Megatron is definitely my favorite incarnation of him.
But that redesign of his G1 design into a silver tank is my second-favorite. That was such a great update to his G1 self.
Megatron's design and voice in Prime are perfect, it takes everything good about most of his designs and rolled them into one, and the voice is a nice mix of Hugo's and Frank's G1

I quite like the idea of Megatron getting some kind of upgrades that turns him into a triple changer so he gets both a jet mode as well as a tank mode

Animated was *SUPPOSED* to have a fourth season and one episode was titled "Triple Threat" in which Megatron was to be experimented on by Blackarachnia and he acquires triple-changing just like Blitzwing but it leaves him with a bit of unstableness in personality.
Fun Fact: Hugo Weaving didn’t care about playing Megatron, he thought it was meaningless.

This is why you get someone like Frank Welker, someone who actually loves and respect the character unlike Hugo Weaving who only did for the paycheck
TFP Megatron will always be my favourite. Scaly, sharp and dangerous in design, and a terrifying personality and VICIOUS in fights, as he proved his metal constantly in TFP. Frank Welker voicing him was also a good addition as his voice is pretty much perfect for Megs
