Fun fact: "Peeps" is what Peter Molyneux (one of the founders of Bullfrog) initially called the sprites in Populous while he was developing it. So the nickname for the aliens in Startopia is likely a reference to that. At no point in the game are the aliens specifically called peeps, but you do see them referred to as such in the game's data files.
It's fantastic to see someone mention this game, it's one of my favourite classic management games that i've played quite a lot over the past 20 years since getting, and still think of relatively often. It has such a sense of charm and style, there just isn't anything else quite like it and I really hope someone makes a spiritual successor at some point (that 'remake' doesn't count).
One of the more underrated building management games out there , if anything the lack of humans and primarily alien population has always been a high point for me. And the dry british humor of things has always been a nice bit of set dressing
Different rooms have their own sound and sometimes music which is heard if you dip your camera to floor level. If you go near the upper class bar you can hear the robot pianist instead of the deck theme. Other rooms might have snoring or machines going ping.
Nice! Thanks for doing a video on Startopia. Absolutely underrated gem. It's an extremely different vibe but Ixion is an interesting mix of Startopia and Frostpunk if you're ever interested in another circular station builder kind of thing. Also Galacticare, which is a two-point hospital kind of deal has some extremely heavy Startopia influences as well. I'm convinced a few dialog lines are direct references. To say nothing of its Aarona Daal type trader.
Cool, both of these seem quite interesting, and Galacticare definitely looks like it has a Startopia-like feel to it. Might have to check these out at some point. Thanks for the suggestions.
I bought this game when I was in middle school from a Big Lots and loved it. I forgot about it but as soon as I saw the first screen shot it all came flooding back. Fun game for the mind of a 13 year old anyway lol.
This was one of my favorite games ever. Nothing ever came close in the space-station category when it comes to city builders. There's a Startopia 2, or remake or whatever, but it's stale and stiff. Doesn't have the soul and the awesome art of this one. The only game I can think of that sooooooomewhat captures a bit of the essence of Startopia is IXION - but it's on a more serious note.
Spacebase Startopia released rough and I was optimistic and supportive that they would continue to update and make it better. Game wasen't even out for a Month and the devs just gave up on it completely. It was rather upsetting to me since Startopia is one of my favorite pc games.
There's a link to it in the description of the video. The original site (Real Time Strategic Carnage or RTSC) was taken down years ago so it's a Web Archive link. Super well done guide, and clearly quite a bit of effort was put into making it.
@@DrJerryGamingOh yeah, I used that years ago. It was reuploaded as a guide on Steam as well. I still don't know what all the peep criminal behaviours do. They will enter a room to work, take up machines and space but disrupt things. A criminal siren will crash peeps love, a criminal grey will do malpractice.

The first few minutes I immediately went "Yep this is gonna be peak late 90s/early 00s PC gaming"

played this as a kid, a lot... Didnt understand shit but really liked the flair and artstyle..
They told me that this is our most realistic portrayal of aliens.

Loved this game when it came out. Felt a little unfinished even then but the idea and game play were spot on.
Oh man, I never heard of Startopia; it could have been my jam back in the day!
Wow.. The fact that this game had a versus mode is incredible. Wish more games made use of this idea.
Also Jabba's dying in their bathtubs LMAO
Mods for this game would be incredibly cool!
Oh man I had this back in the day!
Jewel box and everything!
This game is a masterpiece ! Truly !

Do Spacebase Startopia next?? Would love to see a video followup on that!

This gives Space Station 13 vibes
Which guide to peep details did you use?

Me being twelve and reading PCGamer in the store. . .
Lots of cult classics were flops and killed their studios
