I have a 1985 Nauticat 44. Did you ever buy a boat? Once I first stepped on the 44 that I eventually bought, I couldn't get it out of my head. I love the protected pilot house and the breeze you get with boat doors open. The boat has it's share of "cons", but the pilot house and the huge aft cabin make up for all of them.

@@jasonmcintosh2632 In your opinion, what are the cons of the 44?

@@ggergg6423 I hate to make a list of just cons, but:
      - small interior space for a 44' boat due to:
      - hull under bow being cut away to allow for easier wave entry
      - 12 foot beam (again, helps with wave entry)
      - rounded bilges (no hard chins)
      - rounded bilges and large weight above waterline due to
pilot house and two masts make the boat roll in even small swells
      - full keel makes it very hard to maneuver in a marina, even with the bow thruster
      - the high aft cockpit and outboard rigging from the two masts makes it very hard to steer the boat into a slip and
make it over to a cleat on the dock before you get blown off when single hand sailing
      - no lines from main mast run back to cockpit
this is because the big pilot house is in the way
      - little protection in the cockpit as you're very high and exposed (but I generally love the cockpit being so high up...)
      - no protected means of getting in the cockpit (this is due to the side doors which i love...)
      - relatively little kitchen for a 44' boat
partially due to it being far forward where the hull is narrow and partially due to 2nd bathroom
      taking up space by kitchen
-despite having a large engine room, it's a bit hard to get at the engine.
this is because the hull's rounded bilges cause the engine to sit low in the bilge so when you
stand in the engine room, the top of the engine is below your knees, and the bottom of the engine isn't reachable
      - and of course, all of the windage due to the huge pilot house and bulwarks make it very poor at pointing into the wind.
Everything is a tradeoff. All of the above make the Nauticat a poor choice for just coastal cruising from marina to marina, but it's a good choice for sailing in heavy seas. If I took my wife out in a racer/cruiser and found ourselves in conditions where the hull was pounding so badly you couldn't walk through the cabin but had to crawl and hope that the boat wasn't going to break open as the whole thing shuddered every time it came down hard on a wave, i don't know I could get her back into the boat.
