Are you interested in late medieval music to?
My friend Gaston from Argentina told me about how fascinated he got when he learned about a lot of newly discovered musical text/notes.
Showing that medieval music was far more developed than we previously thought.
Last time I talked to him he was making his own late medieval string instrument.
He made his own theorbo.

@@attemptedunkindness3632Are you feeding them? Do they eat food? What do they eat? At what point will your area of woodland reach angelic sounding dude critical mass? Can the flora and fauna of your woodland support, say, 800 angelic sounding dudes or will they collapse the local ecosystem? Are some of them collapsing from exhaustion from singing constantly? If so, who is tending to the fallen angelic sounding dudes? If hundreds of angelic sounding dudes all sing at once, do they sing in unison, or does their cacophany of different songs become unbearable to the ears, or, in other words, demonic, and against their nature? I have more questions but it sounds like you've got quite a situation on your hands and I don't want to waste your time.
I can't believe there's music of this caliber for free on the internet. As hard as things might be right now with the economy, we are still truly blessed when it comes to being able to access so much artistic content for cheap or free. Thank you Mr. Acker and Mr. Mobley for this amazing performance.

Why specifically that part
Reginald's voice is like a beautiful and otherworldly renaissance painting. He captures a contrast of light and shade with the same drama as chiaroscuro that is somehow also softly and imperceptibly blended like sfumato. Sublime.
A performance once reserved for kings and nobility. Stunning arrangement by both of you. Love it.

@@Marcel_Audubon Oh this is certainly true -- there are so many albums out there that really didn't need to be pressed...
The deciding factor is quality of performance and material. If this pair (perhaps sometimes with accompanying instruments like the occasional sackbut or shawm) let rip with the Purcell and Byrd catalogues, they could easily make a double album that would sell for 20 years.
Mobley is hands down my favorite countertenor of all time. I sang Bach's B-minor Mass back in June with him on the alto solo and he made me weep. His tone, SUBLIME, his connection to the text, GROUNDING, his ornaments, UTTERLY DISGUSTING. So so so pleased to see you two collaborating. More, please!!!

@@jessicadebernard8210 Countertenors nowadays use falsetto to sing. Falsetto is not a full voice. They can't sing high parts in full voice because they have undergone a hormonal puberty and their voice dropped down in their adolescent years, so they have to "fake" their ability to sing high by using falsetto ("falsetto" even means "fake" in Italian)

This type of creativity is TRULY historical as well, but takes that history and breathes life into it.

I thought I'd somewhat searched through Henry Purcel's offerings after discovering Dido's Lament / When I am Laid in Earth, and then returning to Bach's sacred choral and pipe organ music, but apparently I must be going through them more thoroughly 👀😲

How the actual f### does one learn, not to mention master, the theorbo?? This playing and singing is from another world. Massive props to both!
The traditional way was first to be born to and old family of musicians, preferably to a father who was already known as a virtuoso. Then it was just a matter of studying hard for the first decades of your life... Today that is not much of an option. Start with enough money to buy a decent instrument, and to engage the best private teachers. After a few decades you might make it.

No... That is years of practice, patient learning of technique, and then making good use of one's art. And then, he can make his singing sound easy.
Talent and training and endless practice. Talent alone will not do it.
Singing usually makes me feel really anxious, though I have no clue why. But sometimes somebody's voice just shuts down everything in my head, forces all the other things out, and holds me captive until the very end of the song. This performance was absolutely beautiful on both parts 🥲

I am a Director of Music currently, delivering the British curriculum and Music For A While is part of the current Edexcel GCSE specification. I love teaching this piece and seeing the mindset of the students change as they learn about the context of the piece and how it fits into the story of Oedipus. Reginald's afflection during some of the key moments of word painting are excellent.

This is perhaps now my favorite performance of a Purcell piece to date!
I’ve always felt that Purcell was in a time different from his own. Very modern ideas with the sound of the early renaissance, not like his contemporaries at all.
That was an exquisite duo performance. Just goosebumps beautiful.

It’s not just the beautiful voice and excellent technique, it’s the attention to detail, to phrasing, and connection to the text. And to hear this with theorbo was a real treat. Thank you.
Mobley's interpretation develops quite organically - and he lets the text "breathe" with his tasteful treatment and ornamentation. His clear enunciation also breathes life into the brief text - which I think is important for a full appreciation of musical allegory.

Apparently a countertenor is usually a baritone that has trained to use a higher range including their falsetto. I learned that after looking it up after being wowed by this video!

Am a baritone but, with falsetto, the range demonstrated here is not a problem - but certainly the most beautiful part is demonstrated here. If push comes to shove, I can compete with some of my choirs sopranos - which I, when conducting, jokingly used to remind them that they should not complain yet about how high it is 😂
There is a fantastic demonstration of what penguin described if you look up "if ye love me" performed by Jakub Josef Orlinski. Jakub is another extremely talented countertenor, but in that video, he sings 4 separate parts, including a beautiful baritone.

I sang Aeneis in Purcell's Dido & Aeneis. The moment Reginald began to sing I recognised this as a Purcell piece.
This is actually my first time even knowing about the "countertenor" range. Thanks for introducing this song to us too. Every time I see classical music instruments I just think of the complications when keeping them intonated with all the difference in probably scale lengths and string tension.

What a great composer was Henry Purcell, his music is so beautiful, specially the chorals and arias of his operas. Yes, this composer is the transition between the early baroque music and and the latest renaissance period. SO GREAT.
