I do believe this is what is what Henry Purcell would have heard in his day. It's an 'acting' voice, a mix of raw chest voice with falsetto, switching between the two when required. Also a great characterful face!
Yes it's very interesting and affecting, I have heard Andras Scholl sing this in pure countertenor which is very beautiful, but this approach is very striking and emotional.
Except for the original sheet music as written is sung an octave lower. It was Klaus Nomi that popularised the counter tenor interpretation of this piece, but it's supposed to be sung by a bass.
Standing up is better for "performance" when singing, especially classical music, and the whole scene doesn't look like it needs a "performer". @@weiterimtext8134
Your video is the only one that accurately expresses the heartbreaking emotions of the song's lyrics, “I'm cold,” “I don't want to wake up,” and “I want to die”. Most excellent.
As a backwoods hillbilly, secretly a voracious consumer of art, beauty and music, and when it can be found, a delicious stew of all 3, I was warmed by this. It's 9 degrees in my house and there is ice on my windows inside. I'm quite comfortable under my quilts as I seek the glowing embers that kindle inner warmth such as this. Would enjoy him singing Arvo Parts heart in the Highlands.

Holy hell, I'm suddenly feeling emotions I wasn't even aware existed. If this isn't what true. genuine musical experience is about, I don't know what is!
Stessa cosa per me. Ho pianto e mi sono sentito sollevare in cielo. Ero in estasi e in disperazione allo stessa tempo. È come se volessi morire per vivere. Dio
A brilliant interpretation, intense, without pretentious effects. In my opinion one of the best recordings of this piece that I have heard so far. (and excellently recorded ensemble!)
I have never heard this before. Purcell was a genius. What a performance! His harmonic progressions are astounding. and rather like those in Vivaldi's Four Seasons 'Winter'?:-)
Mr. Lesne, your voice is wonderful, I have been listening to your performance for several days and I am more and more surprised every moment. This performance is truly memorable.. and the best wishes for you.
Certainly this is the best rendition I have both seen or heard. The song itself is indeed genius. I love the opening chord progessions that resolve in a manner evoking a sense of coldness and awakening.
Cette version est magnifique❤ aussi puissante que crepusculaire !!Et je ne la decouvre que le mois dernier...Comment ai je pu ne pas la connaitre avant ?? La question est la...merci c est grandiose...TOUT y est sublime !!!❤
Never have I heard such an intense and deep interpretation, the singer's sensitivity to the nuances in emotions, the ensemble with such pure and resonant sound! It's incredible!
