Ghost In The Shell! I have to look it up to confirm it but I'd put a lot of money on it. This is freaking mesmerizing and gorgeous, just like the beginning of that lgendary anime. Ah, apparently Kenji Kawai said it was "influence by them", not actually performed by them, based on numerous online sources. I've always wondered where I can find such goosebump-inducing music ever since the late 90s. I'm so glad I've found it.
This had a profound impact on me in the early 1990's. This recording, in particular, I must have listen to this hundreds of times. But now seeing the video, oh boy, oh boy, what would I give to conduct such a vocal ensemble...
0:41 In a time of ancient gods, warlords and kings, a land in turmoil cried out for a hero. She was Xena, a mighty princess forged in the heat of battle. The power. The passion. The danger. Her courage will change the world!
As a Dutchman not only heard it, I've sung it. It's not the harmonies that are the problem, it's the meters. Thirty years ago I sang in a choir specialised in Russian music, but with a change of director came a shift into Slavic music from the Balkans... that took some getting used to.
There has never been a powerful or moving 2 minutes and 8 seconds of singing. Why it's so powerful..is hard to put into words. It would be wonderful to re-unite these beautfiul women at some point to conjure the magic once more. Thankyou ladies for briefly opening the Gates of Heaven for us mere mortals to witness!!
Mesmerisingly brilliant!! I feel transfixed when I listen to this choir, the complexity of their harmonies and the depth of tone is fascinating and wonderful. I listen often to feel that wonder, it's almost addictive!!!

@@moisiewe Just the idea of an exact match in contrast to a close but not exact match. In other words, it sounds like maybe the same choir and people... not just the same type of sound. If it's not the same choir and people singing, it's so close as to be indistinguishable.
It's interesting how the mainstream consumers of music are starting to pick up on things like this. This song has been in Americans eyes since Zena Warrior Princess, and obviously it's much older than that, but suddenly people are like 'oh this is so new'. haha Glad you found it. I've done my best to share this exact video on social media and I suspect it's the reason Charles Cornell found it, and now you.
As a Bulgarian I’ve recognised motives from our folklore in a lot of Hollywood movies and western songs, I guess people just don’t realise what it is, we Bulgarians can pick it up from the first tone. There’s at least one big movie each year that uses Bulgarian songs. Last year it was in the opening scene of the Banshees of Inisherin. It’s always a cool surprise to hear it randomly like this and to see people appreciate our music.
Thank you for telling me where I had heard this before... obviously it is in loads of films and computer gam3 trailers and the title is bizarre clickbait, but Xena is probably the best known example.
i loved performing and learning this song!! Very beautiful when you are standing amongst dedicated and talented women! it was such a fun song! Bulgarian folk songs are always leave me in awe!
fun fact: if you think this sounds like the Xena Warrior Princess theme song it's because the song is written in Bulgarian. Historically speaking, Xena was from Thrace or thereabouts so if she were born today she would be Bulgarian
I never get tired of hearing this. Magical and uplifting.

Oh yes, I have heard of a choir like this before because I listen to video game soundtracks. I did not know that this was a Bulgarian choir. Also, love the music transcription! Thank you!
Love hearing non-Western rhythm patterns such as the 9/16 being divided 2-2-2-3 here. The "extra" beat is a standard feature of folk music and dance in Bulgaria and the region and where rhythms like the alternating 33/16 and 36/16 in "Bulgarian Bulge" come from. You just ride along with the 2-beat patterns and wait for the 3-beat to land.

Yes I have heard a choir like this. Bulgarian choral music has a very distinct and unmistakeable character.
Thank you very much for promoting our folklore. Videos like this are emotional to watch because you feel so appreciated. We indeed have lots of talented people especially in music in a small country like Bulgaria. Sadly, people inside the country forget and underestimte it. Be blessed.
Beautiful close harmony with each voice in exact pitch.
Most people have no idea how difficult this is to perfect.
BRAVO.
Okay, can we please just appreciate, what kind of a great singer and how perfect you need to be in your voice, that you can even create these choirs?!
I'm from the American midwest, and I have listened to music like this. This is a beautiful example. Thanks.
Yup it Sounds like Ghost in the Shell soundtrack
I had the exact same thought!
Damn this is insane.
I appreciate the transcription 👏
This had a profound impact on me in the early 1990's. This recording, in particular, I must have listen to this hundreds of times. But now seeing the video, oh boy, oh boy, what would I give to conduct such a vocal ensemble...
I totally love it - beautiful voices ! 💕Sounds so perfect!
A cappella too. Beautiful young ladies singing beautiful music. Well done, choir, well done.
0:41 In a time of ancient gods, warlords and kings, a land in turmoil cried out for a hero. She was Xena, a mighty princess forged in the heat of battle. The power. The passion. The danger. Her courage will change the world!
Beautiful voices, beautiful people.
As a Dutchman not only heard it, I've sung it. It's not the harmonies that are the problem, it's the meters.
Thirty years ago I sang in a choir specialised in Russian music, but with a change of director came a shift into Slavic music from the Balkans... that took some getting used to.
Holly shit, goosebumps all over the place. The power choosing the right spot to put dissonances.
Heavenly! I’m so happy this was offered by my algorithm, I’m an instant fan!
I LOVE harmonic dissonance. Beautiful vocals!
I've been to Bulgaria and I sure have. Amazing tradition.
So I've never heard music like this?!?! Yup...you were right. Freaking awesome post
Love those major & minor 2nds! And of course a great transcription!
The rhythm at 0:42 is heavily used in Greek and Turkish music as well
Mesmerisingly brilliant!! I feel transfixed when I listen to this choir, the complexity of their harmonies and the depth of tone is fascinating and wonderful. I listen often to feel that wonder, it's almost addictive!!!
Thanks to Xena and Elio I discovered Bulgarian choirs!! Love from Italy!!❤️❤️
какие-то совершенно фантастические гармонии для народной музыки, ритмика - космос...
так оно и должно быть!...
Millions of light years away, another star has just been created.
I saw these voices in France in Burgundy in an abbey in 1990. Incredibly wonderful !
Excellent performance.
Soooo, I'm guessing this type of music inspired whoever wrote the music for Ghost in the Shell. This is seriously one of my favorite things I've ever heard... ever. I got chills several times.
Not only GitS,a lot of Japanese anime OSTs have Bulgarian folklore music in it.
Ghost in the Shell is exactly what I was thinking too!
@ghostlyflapjack Yeah totally. Not just similar but dead ringer.
@@scartinmorsese7723what means "dead ringer"?
@@moisiewe Just the idea of an exact match in contrast to a close but not exact match. In other words, it sounds like maybe the same choir and people... not just the same type of sound. If it's not the same choir and people singing, it's so close as to be indistinguishable.
I fell in love with the Bulgarian women’s choir a long time ago sooooo haunting ❤
Thanks for this music. The Bulgarian female choirs sing with this unique sound.
I like it that this style is a living tradition, it inspires me.
Потрясающие голоса, потрясающее исполнение, потрясающая композиция и потрясающие исполнительницы. В этом видео всё потрясающее❤
I LOVE THIS SONG, dont know much of Bulgarian songs but its so beautiful and addicting
Listen to 'Kalimankou Denkou', it's hauntingly beautiful.
I first heard Bulgarian Voices some 60 years ago. That type of choir is very well known all over the world.
Великолепие народного творчества. Фантазии многоголосия.
I have heard many times but never fails to blow me away.
It's interesting how the mainstream consumers of music are starting to pick up on things like this. This song has been in Americans eyes since Zena Warrior Princess, and obviously it's much older than that, but suddenly people are like 'oh this is so new'. haha
Glad you found it. I've done my best to share this exact video on social media and I suspect it's the reason Charles Cornell found it, and now you.
Exatamente 😂❤
Thank you for including the score! Such rich harmonies there!
ВЕЛИКОЛЕПНОЕ ИСПОЛНЕНИЕ! БРАВО!!!
I cycled from Switzerland to Bulgaria to hear choirs but didnt. Sob. Thank you. I enjoy the dancing and costumes.
Beautiful, captivating and so skilled..... more, please😊❤
Proud to be Bulgarian!
Gorgeous ladies with beautiful synchronized harmonious voices. 😍👍
I cant listen to this without being in a constant state of goosebumps and shivers. Amazing!
i loved performing and learning this song!! Very beautiful when you are standing amongst dedicated and talented women! it was such a fun song! Bulgarian folk songs are always leave me in awe!
My aunt and uncle live in the Bulgarian mountains. I should send them this.
fun fact: if you think this sounds like the Xena Warrior Princess theme song it's because the song is written in Bulgarian. Historically speaking, Xena was from Thrace or thereabouts so if she were born today she would be Bulgarian
This is a marvel : short, but fantastic. I fell in love with those choirs.
this is enchanting
I never get tired of hearing this. Magical and uplifting.
No way... I just couldn't believe my ears and my eyes as well... These girls are so gorgeous talented singers, singing with the voice of angels... I fell in love immediately.
I see that Dead Can Dance got huge inspiration from Bulgarian folklore.
Goosebumps :) That's fantastic!
This was fabulous, but my favorite is the Cosmic Voices from Bulgaria with the Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra. Phenomenal harmonies. I listen to that one all the time. It’s beautifully different. Tho this one had even more difficult harmonies but each part PERFECT!
this was amazing, haunting, and hypnotic. The harmony, and tension created, and the rhythms... thank you
I have a few CDs of this marvellous music that I purchased nearly 20 years ago. It's still spellbinding to listen to.
my choir sings kaval sviri- bulgarian folk music is one of our favorite genres!
Oh yes, I have heard of a choir like this before because I listen to video game soundtracks. I did not know that this was a Bulgarian choir. Also, love the music transcription! Thank you!
Amazing voices. Love it.
Absolutely adore this song! Got to sing this for an AllState choir and it was so fun!
It never stops being mind blowing. Have heard this type of music for years and it is always amazing. Thank you for posting this.
