Just bought my MS 291 with the light 04 bar and it has the bar specs stamped on it...I do love the MS291 power going thru a 2 foot round oak tree!!! WOW!!!!!
Felixia - well done video again. I'm a relatively new subscriber and really like your style. Thanks for the comparison video. The big draw back for the home owner user will be the lack of specs on the bar. It's so easy with the specs to make sure you aren't making a mistake or buying the wrong chain etc. I have two Stihl saws (older MS290 and a newer MS180) and my buddy has 2 Husquavarna's (455 and 576 XP G) and I do all the maintenance on them. I have a lot of fun with the saws and he hates doing maintenance so it works out. Keep up the good work and cheers from Oregon, USA.
She made a correction video. She was sent a prototype for this video which was lacking specs, but the production model indeed has specs like all the other bars, so that's good.
Great job ....excellent comparison. In Canada I'm sure we will be last as usual to get these but I will be looking forward to it !! Another very clear and concise video. Well done as usual, 🇨🇦 loves you :)
Great video. Just bought a new 261 and was thinking of changing the bar to the light 04. The weight difference did not seem to noticeable but every little bit counts at the end of the day. Cutting speed will also help lighten the work load as well. Love the new 261 and my 661.
New and innovating is how you stay on top. Good job Stihl! Thank you for showing us this. Your videos are always very informative. I have an MS 261 also and this would make this saw even better than it is already, got to try it. :)
@@Femalelumberjack Just done a day with my new 16" Light 04 bar & full chisel chain on mu MS261 C. Wow ! Transformed the saw. I was using a 13" standard 1.6 mm bar before, now, even with an extra 3" it is still more poweful, cuts like a dream. You are absolutely right in your recommendation, has transformed the saw. Cutting big dry ash & seasoned oak. Superb. Thank you so much !
Though the Stihl 04 bar, weighing 1.473 lbs., is not available in the US, a 16" Oregon Versacut bar weighs about 1.67 lbs. Greater weight (3 oz.) but pretty close. For the MS 261, it is model 160VXLGD025 in case someone is interested.
What about the bar temperature? Did the Light run hotter? Did you need to make any adjustments on the bar oiler? And what about the chain does it seem to get dull quicker? Price you didn't say anything about price. I figure price can change in all parts of the world but you could maybe say the E bar is x% cheaper than the Light. Thank you for doing this video.
I don’t feel it running hotter than the rollomatic. Didn’t have to change the oiler because of the bar but will do it when necessary depending on the hardness of the wood. Doesn’t dull quicker. I can’t say anything about prices because they are so different there’s really no way to compare them at all
The weight difference is more noticable on saws like my 660 after using it for a couple hours. I go with an aftermarket brand light weight bar. The performance difference is well worth the extra cost. I also find using different bar oils has an effect on performance as well.😉 Great topic, Cheers!.
It just figures. I just bought a replacement bar for my ms250, that I bought years ago. I didn't even know they made a light bar! Thank you for telling me when I wear the bar out again they'll probably have something else to replace it that's even lighter! LOL
Good job.. I am so old school...i have a old Stihl 044...with rollmatic...bought in the 80's... I did buy some bulk chain and need to lean how to splice it
Hello, the light rail 04 is for cutting wood for fire, for repeated cutting and for a long time or just for felling trees, is it appropriate to use it for the type of cutting or does it not matter? Thanks
I think now in UK the Light bar is the standard fitting for all 261s. I know some people are suspicious of the thinner chain but I use it on hardwood with no problem.
@@journeyman138 I bought a 16" Light 04 & wow I love it - much more versatile & more effective power. I'm in the UK & was able to order it online. Took down & processed a couple of 20 " x 60 ' trees at the weekend. Handled it all without hesitation.

Hey FLJ, Great videos. I,ve been managing a mixed deciduous woodland as a firewood coppice for the last 20 years, also doing some milling of sycamore, chestnut and alder, unfortunately early spring signs of chalara (ash dieback)could be present. My question is what would you recommend as a disinfectant to use on my saws due to the fact i will have to implement strict bio control measures this coming autumn.
50/50 Both, reduce the weight and get better cutting performance with narrow kerf because its a full comp (more cutters) chain. But I don't like it as much for felling, narrow stuff usually is the first to get easily pinched.
Great video! I use a 16 inch bar and 3/8” Picco Super 3 (PS3) low profile 1.3mm chain on my 261 and it cuts very fast. Would love to know how this new chain and bar perform against it. The PS3 chain was sold as a performance kit at one point by Stihl here in the UK.
Most interesting & helpful video - I've got a 261 as well with a Stihl Rollomatic16 inch bar and the Pico Duro 3 carbide tipped chain which has turned out to be a very nice combination. Very sharp & smooth. Of course the chain is impossible to sharpen.....which is a drag ! So after your video I think I too will get the Stihl Light 04 16 inch with a new chain - It'll be great fun to try out and compare the differences. Many thanks.......all the way from London !
Paul Wharton did you check if your dealer can sharpen your carbide chain? I had mine sharpened by my dealer, It was not that bad of a price for a chain that stays sharp 5 times longer.
The narrower kerf of the newer bar and chain will mean it will need sharpening more often and will have a shorter life. Must, I suppose, because the same power is going through a smaller cutting edge and it will blunten more swiftly. Shorter chain life won't put off anyone because of the faster cutting speed in return, but the more frequent sharpening will be a pain in the backside for many, I guess, and may affect the total time saved. I have a 261 (original 2.8kW version) with the 1.6mm bar and I am happy enough to not retire it before it wears out. We are all motivated by different things - I feel pleasure every time I feel the warmth beginning to come through the (heated) handle!

So glad you used inches for most of the measurements when making an English video. 1.3 millimeters is 0.050" gauge, 1.6 millimeters is 0.063" gauge and 1.1millimeters is 0.043" gauge. These measurements are the thickness of the metal for the drive links. Not sure if there is any difference in the kerf between a 0.050" gauge and 0.063" gauge chain. I do know the 0.043" gauge chain is has a smaller kerf. At least the pitch of 0.325" was the same on both chains. I only use 3/8", 0.375" , or 1/4", 0.250" pitch chain. You basically get an extra inch of bar and chain when using the lightweight bar and 0.050" gauge chain for the same weight.

Do the research and have it ready at hand, that way, anything you need whether it's new chain, a new spool, or if you wanna convert from .325 to 3/8 with few or many teeth etc, you will have already done the work and can have everything 100% figured out within minutes instead of spending hours researching every time because you won't save the information anyway.

About Light 04 bar not having the specs stamped into it. I have a 460 rancher husqvarna with chisel chain 24inch makes wood chips cuts like butter even thru big old red oak trees
Today I picked up new 440e husqvarna 18 inch bar, chisel chain cut right thru 20inch red oaks rounds quickly pretty good for the price$300 at tractor supply
Set 10" bar with 1.1 mm width chain and you will be shocked :))
Ja do sthil 261c-m montuję łańcuch 3/8 1,6 mm to jest efekt cięcia i nie zważam na parę gramów wagi
Dont want no light junk. I want a good heavy durable bar that will last.
Full chisel yo nizzell! Will you be putting some ears on your bear sculpture? Needs ears.
Конечно, сравнили узкую цепь 1,3 с 1,8 )
I love u,where are u from?
It's not the length of the bar but how you use it. jk
A comparison between a 1.3 to a 1.6?
Of course th e 1.3 will be faster
