- BB King with surprise guest John Mayer. Also featured Susan Tedeschi & her husband Derek Trucks with great guitar solo. 'Guess Who' Part 1 - camera battery ran out - watch part 2 for John's guitar solo. 9-5-12 Finale
I swear to God, I'd buy a ticket to listen to Derek Trucks tune up.
Many people feel that way about the English guitarist Martin Simpson. Check him out!
Do it, just experiencing the natural distortion coming from his amp hits totally different than you've experienced.
saw Trucks in a bar in 2006. NO ONE but I stood before him. everyone else was just chillin at their tables. one of the coolest evenings of my life.
I first saw him playing at age 11 in a tiny club in Jacksonville, FL and never forgot him. And his wife, Susan Tedeschi, is one of the best blues vocalists alive today.

Best comment ever.
and he always will just wish. either have it..by now..or you mimic.
me too.
Awe man that's some funny sh*^it...I'm cryin here..
John mayer is respected in the guitar community, he's proven that he's not just a billboard top 40 pop star, but a really talented musician who has roots in blues and jazz guitar playing. It's good to see him play next to greats like BB and Trucks and not just try to steal the show. That's respect.
When Trucks started his solo you could see mayer was more interested in listening to the actual art he was playing, than to be in the spotlight. He's a true musician, like the rest of the people on stage, that's for damn sure.
Mayer is better than a lot of mainstream people give him. I've always enjoyed his playing. He's not as cocky as he's made out to be.
He has no 'roots' in blues or jazz. His roots are as a pop star who took music and his craft as a guitar player very, very seriously after he became famous. He totally deserves major credit for that, but his 'roots' are as a pop star who composed good, pop songs and later underwent a pretty radical transformation into a highly talented musician who put in the work to develop chops.
@@LessLethal oh you know him personally?
He has no roots in jazz stop it. He is good but overrated
"That is about as good as i ever heard it"
Even the camera got misty eyes.
Haha no doubt about it
No doubt about it, unbelievable.
"I see why you married him."
😮😢😂😂
I wonder if Derek ever comes back to this video to hear bb king compliment him so profoundly
flamshiz I know I would 😊
we all would. I guess he doesn't.
LOL what a great thought.
He probably brushes his teeth to that shit every morning and every night before bed
flamshiz From everything I've read about DT that doesn't seem likely. A humble man.
You know Derek Trucks is great at guitar when John Mayer is pulling his guitar face and he isn't even playing
Lol secondhand stank face
Never has anyone witnessed such absurd honesty expressed with so incredibly sensitivity. Then laid down so gently and peacefully
Pretty sure thats what i heard bbking say x.
Fantastic comment.
Him looking on in awe and clearly turning down BB's offer for a riff or solo says a lot about the magic Derek is putting out right here
I was right there with him and the stank face
Even the camera started to tear up at 5:07 after BB gave that compliment
underrated comment
4.24 - the "I accidentally just played the best guitar solo ever" face
That half-second look up... yep.
4:24 *
Holy shit this man is a king
The “is BB King going to hike his dress up for me” look
Accidentally my ass 😂
The moment Derek was crowed by The King. I'm in tears.
I'll admit...that kinda choked me up hearing BB say that to DT....can you imagine getting a complement like that from a LEGEND?!?
I come back to this video once every year or so to just soak in the gravity of that statement. It makes me cry every time.
You know our boy had a good night through and through
If Susan Tedeschi is the least accomplished guitarist on your stage, you have a good night ahead of you. Very cool.
Yea I saw Tedeschi Trucks a couple times and she's awesome! Her voice is amazing as well.
That solo at 3:25 is one of the best sounds any human has produced on this planet.
I still come back to listen to that so a few times a year. So perfect.
It's truly divine. Out of our atmosphere
god, hearing B.B. tell Derek "that's about the best i ever heard it" made me want to cry. you can tell that Derek is really humble and that he's worked his ass off to be as good as he is. such a talented group of musicians in this video.
@@kaboom6157 0j
He actually didn't. He bought his first guitar at a rummage sale for $5 at 9 years old. Had his first paying gig at 11. He's a savant. Dude was born to play.
@@jasonadair3389 Also he comes from a music family, I mean he is the nephew of Butch Trucks
I had the same reaction. This man has played with THE BEST! He did a whole album and tour with Eric Clapton!
Derek literally grew up with the allman brothers. He was playing on Skydogs guitars at an early age as well.
It's a bunmer to see all the negative comments beating up Mayer. I understand people love seeing the hot shot look bad but make no mistake, the dude is one sharp player. John sat back like a true gentleman and just listened. He's just unrated because he's overrated.... aaand Mr Trucks is just a juggernaut.
Agreed, John can really play
John has chops. He's actually a pretty funny dude on top of it all. People are too macho to respect someone who writes sappy love songs and shreds the guitar over them
u just can't compete with that tone
right on...
Spot on
3:37 I've never in my life heard an instrument sing before. It sounded stunning. Plus he got the highest praise from the masters of the craft. Once in a lifetime moment.
listen to the violin, thats exactly what it does
When bb says that's about as good as I've ever heard it to trucks... keep in mind bb has played with Eric Clapton, Stevie ray, Albert king, Freddie king, buddy guy and countless other legends. That's saying a lot
You say anything just to be nice we all know that's not true especially with artist like Buddy guy.

You said that somewhere else too.But I have to agree
3:26 I love how John Mayer is just watching Trucks face as he's playing his solo, he loves getting into it and seeing others doing the same, truly a great artist despite whatever beef people may have against him
KevinHamProductions1 John Mayer is cool!
Really? I thought he was looking at Trucks condescending at times and into it at other times
S. California King why would it be condescending
@@s.californiaking2802 Nah, he was looking to see what he was playing
Life to short for hate, guitar is an expression of the player and all I see is John in the moment and nothing wrong with that
3:25 to 4:22 is just bliss, cleared my sockets. What a solo. What a man. God I love music.
When BB King says "That's about as good as I've ever heard" that's some damned high-ass praise.
Derek Trucks may be our greatest living blues guitarist.
Blues guitar is supposed to emulate the human voice. Derek Trucks' guitar emulates the voice of someone better than the best blues vocalist who ever lived.
If you consider John a blues guitarist, then I must disagree with Derek being the greatest living blues guitarist ... I mean, if you've watched some of the things John has been feautured on ... damn, Eric Clapton called him a master guitarist that doesnt realize how good he is, surely that must be up there on the same level .. Mechanically you can always find faster guitarists, but John has got soul and understanding of not only writing deep lyrics, but also mastering an instrument in such a niveau that I doubt anyone in the future will come close to that again .. Yes I am a Mayer fan too, Derek's solo is sick, no doubt about that!
@@flyingnipple6156 * yes, John is a good player, he can copy the best of them!!! He can match their tone, play their licks & fool many people that he is great, but the truth is that ain't great!!! The greats carve out their own tone & licks which is what Trucks has done, especially with so much history of guitar already done, that ain't easy by any means!!! It's easy 2 copy someone, which is what john does!!!
Exactly you nailed it..as they say the blues speaks to the soul..and trucks just defined our human soul
B.B. was always diplomatic to who ever was on stage with him. Heard him give high praise to numerous guitarists on stage with him.
You're entitled to your opinion but Derek is far from being the modern day torch bearer of blues guitar. Hell him and Warren weren't even a good fill in for Dickey Betts when Greg fired him from the band. Not that the Allman brothers was a straight blues band.
There are several guitarists that backed Muddy who still tour. I'd put them above derek anyday.
Nobody can sing that good 😂
what Derek does at like 3:37 or 3:38, one of the most beautiful sounds i have ever heard come out of a guitar, no question
If you haven't heard his "Midnight in Harlem" solo, its amazing as well.
Mother Night I particularly enjoy 3:56
Mother Night He turns the volume all the way down on his guitar plays the note and then turns the volume back up. This is a common technique used to eliminate the "attack" of a note.
sabianhhxevolution whatever it is, it gave me goosebumps.
Jacob Duenas Derek's solos are nothing but class and raw talent regardless of what song he's playing.
"That's about as good as I've ever heard it"
why did that make me so emotional!?
Because that's the word of The King
BB been around since electric blues guitar started, he's heard em all. It got to me too!
When the torch is passed, it is one generation handing off to another. That shit is powerful.
Same here...lol
Man....
When a legend puts his hand on your shoulder and says" that's about as good as I've ever heard it...I mean it", brought tears to my eyes. That was 80+ years of experience talking. Wow, what a compliment.
“That’s about as good as I’ve ever heard”… That’s about as emotional I’ve felt over something that was the best thing I’ve ever heard. R.I.P King, Derek is keeping things sweet for ya down here! 🙌🏻
👏❤️👏 Thank you B.B. King for giving Derek Trucks such praise. He is the blues. ✌️❤️🌼
John Mayer is an outstanding guitar player by any measure. And he was in such awe of Derek.
No Mayer is not. He is a teenage guitar hero but in the real world of musicians he is nothing more than a debutante, if even that
John Mayer is a brilliant guitar player and he looked like a little kid watching his heroes. Just loving being there. That's humility. Being as good as he is but giving space to another great like Derek Trucks. Greatness. And that compliment by BB. Derek looked like he was about to cry. What a great moment.
Uh oh buddy bad news cuz mayer is as good as anybody.

lmao good one
Fantastic comment
Derek's playing + John Mayer's reactions = priceless
I love Derek's face at 4:24 when he ends the solo
He doesn't know himself how he did that
That's the beauty of playing music.. although Derek absolutely knows what he's doing , when you enter that "zone", you just let it flow and let it control you. It's amazing
what if his secret is that he has this condition where his hands operate by themselves and every time the hands finishes a solo he's like "damn thanks for bailing me out of this one"
He surprised himself with how well that worked out…and it worked out fine, very fine…
When will people realize music isn't a damn competition? They're all excellent players making great music.
Trevor Rick Awesome comment!
* disagree completely!!! Blues & Jazz music is extremely competitive!!! No, not in the loving of music, but best believe, eventho they humble in public, they def trying 2 out do each other!!!
When you play your instrument alone, if there are two of you playing the same instrument, there will be some people think about which one is better, even both are the same you lol.
Not in any comment section you will see in your lifetime buddy, strap in for the ride 🤪 . Trucks rules!
100%
To get that apraisal from B.B King for your playing, while John Mayer just shakes his head, like he does'nt belive his own ears, wow. I don't think my feet would touch the ground for å whole week. You can see that Susan Tedeschi is many kinds of proud, also. Wonderful
I mean, that was BB King asking if John wanted to solo after, and he said no, but the sentiment stands, he was definitely blown away.
@@p1an0hands I wouldn't want to try to knock out a solo after that either
@@p1an0hands it wasn't just a no thank you either, it was a straight-up hell no.
Perfect phrasing in that last solo from Derek. Don’t think I’ve ever heard a solo come out so perfectly. Truly amazing. I can’t stop listening!
3:23. Might be the most sublime and soulful 1 minute of guitar playing I’ve ever heard. Beautiful.
That slide solo was the most amazing thing I've ever seen played on a guitar. Wow
Derek Trucks in now in Duane Allman land for slide solos. He's become legendary.
Derek Trucks is better imo.
If only Duane lived a little longer, both are legends, comparing them is insolent.
raffan1 Everything is a comparison. If you think that way.
Phillip Hutcheson yes sir...you live in the macon ga. area
Never heard anyone play quite like Derek. and like someone said couple comments back, he's singing cryim, laughing. its like going to church, a true spiritual experience...on a SG and he makes it work. and that Coricidin bottle neck slide? didn't even know that was thing. he doesn't use monitors. he uses the space of the venue and adjusts accordingly. that's why he's constantly adjusting the tone and volume. The SOB will give you your money's worth. and him and Susan and that fantastic band are professionals
John Mayer is fuckin amazing stop hating him!! Just because you like derek more you don't have to hate the other!
I saw Bb King at 83 years old and it was amazing. I’m so happy I got to see him. He was such a great guy and I love his music. The Blues!
I love that moment at 4:58, when BB compliments Derek Trucks on his guitar work.
That would have been a very high point for many musicians.
Derek will always have that. Mighty cool.
0:35 Did anyone else notice when BB King said "hot dog" and then looked over to Trucks, laughing, and said, "I meant to say hot damn.." Haha that's some funny shit
Good catch
This actually brings a tear to my eye, its just crazy beautiful.
John Mayer just appreciates the instrument. He’s mesmerized watching Derek lol 🙌🏽
Johns face during that swell in phrase perfectly captures the emotion I feel during Derek's solo. Honestly might be my favorite solo of all time
It's sublime.
It's perfection - I'm responsible for about a million views.

4:23 that little 'wooh' from John was recognition of greatness, and i mean, John Mayer is great guitarist.
Wow, I've heard the term, make the guitar sing, I've just never really witnessed it being done!
You nailed it Tara that slide was emotive to the human voice

Technically, he made it cry :)
What a beautiful set of four people. Impossible not to smile watching/hearing this video.
Mayer didn't look jealous; Mayer looked like any curious guitarist analyzing another's technique. I'm sure he internalized a lot of Trucks' phrasing.
Mayer is jealous. He is always been jealous. He is that type of guy. Now when he's got world famous, even birds knows who he is, he's little less jealous, but still very jealous when someone plays like this. His only wish is to be the best guitar player in the world. We all know that :) But I like him he wrote very nice songs and still writing
John Mayer's face when Derek hits that stanktastic note above the frets at 3:56 is my favorite part of this video because it's literally the same face I made when I heard it for the first time. Derek making it sing again. Beautiful.
This is simply amazing. Derek is a monster.
i don't think people realise how legendary this is. this will never ever happen again rip BB KING abd rock on Derek!
Mayer is one of the best guitarists ever... along with trucks ... but I believe this is the moment John went soul searching to cure his ego after sitting beside Derek
Love this
I’m with BB.... idk if I’ve ever heard a better slide solo than that.
So nice to read all the comments on this thread from so many who acknowledge the incredible gift that Derek Trucks has been blessed with - which he shares so freely with such endearing humility. He is as great a human being as he is a musician. May he live a long and happy life, just like BB ! 😊
Derek Trucks IS one of the finest guitar players to ever exist.
I get goosebumps every time I hear that solo it is beautiful.
John Mayer is an unbelievable blues guitarist, so it’s pretty incredible seeing him react to Derek’s solo like that.
John Mayer's reactions are priceless xD
You know it's real, when you feel it. I get teary eyed every time I listen to that solo. Amazing
This was really a treat. incredible for BB King to give such a great compliment to Derek Trucks. and of course Derek Trucks is so humbled by it. truly amazing.
BB's compliment even made the camera tear up.
I cant stop coming back and listening to this masterpiece!
Wonderful Blues exhibition by some of the best that ever loved and played it! Hats off to John Mayer's modest humility that is so characteristic of his demeanor towards fellow musicians. You can see genuine appreciation for Derek's talent as he defers up close and personal to him. BB is a gas in this video! Love them all, great masters they all be. What a blessing ❣❣❣
When the King of Blues tells you it's, "the best I've ever heard it", you know you're doing something right. BB King giving trucks that affirmation was incredible. The man knows a gifted musician when he sees one. It was like watching a proud father enjoying his son's work paying off. Trucks is the absolute best at slide guitar today, hands down. John Mayer is an absolute legend at rhythm and blues as well. Just fabulous all around.
BB King tells you it’s the best guitar playing he ever heard !!? - Derek you’re a Legend 🙌🏼
I see why John reacted the way he de at 3:40. One of the best slide licks I've ever heard.
This was the best 6 minutes of my day. BB's genuine appreciation for the monster talent that is Trucks was a reminder of what music is all about. He wanted to stay all night and just jam. I'd stay to watch too. Take nothing away from Mayer though. He is a supreme talent and wasn't trying to take center stage here. A humble JM was clearly blown away and inspired by Trucks' playing. *hits repeat*
That fade in gets me every time. God damn the guy can PLAY
Love BB
Dude I can't tell you how many times I've watched this video or seen it referenced in other videos/places online. You captured a moment that is immortalized in the culture now.
0:15 BB king was like hot damn this kid is dope
Always gives me goosebumps. What better compliment to receive - what an amazing moment for Derek
At 3:42 John says “lord have mercy, I can’t even look.”
BB saying "that's about as good as I've ever heard it", had to be a high point; a high compliment from a blues legend. That had to feel pretty good, especially since he absolutely earned it!
lol John just falling in love with Derek.
Trucks is one of the few modern blues players to have his own unique voice on the guitar. So many blues guitarists sound the same or like clones of someone else. I like players that you recognize after a single note. Prime BB King, Buddy Guy, Jimmy Vaughn...they stand out to me more than a lot of the more popular names.
Damn that solo from Trucks was unbelieveble. I know John and BB can make their guitars sing, but that was opera baby. Glad this got recorded.
3:24 for one of the most beautiful guitar solos of all time
You can tell John Mayer is in awe, but look also how intensely he's learning. For this great jam session, and teaching John Mayer some new tricks, thank you and RIP Mr. BB King!
Mayer just looks like he's studying when Trucks is playing. kinda cool.
All great artists are great copy cats..... nothing is original. Always remember that. You should look up the book "Steal Like an Artist"
From what I've seen, pretty much every guitar player is just mesmerized by his playing. Undoubtedly, one of the most fantastic slide players in the world
Tanner Foulk I
I like Mayer. He's very much a student of the game like all the Greats. Derek has studied all the Legends he's been on stage with as well. BB loved both these guys.
Mayer is a great player 👌🏼 but Derek is necwt level epic player , reminds me of what Miles could do just spot on with the music
That's just incredible. The blues has been done over and over, but that's just unbelievable.
Being on the same stage and playing with BB King is already the greatest honour a guitar player can have...🙌🤙🤘
What I love most about Trucks is his unlevelled respect whilst playing within a set of musicians. He plays out front only when he needs to, to many musicians fight for dominance in a jam/composition of musicians. Trucks is one of those rare few lead guitarist (not that I even think I could even decide whether to call him a lead or rhythm guitarist) that just perfectly know their place and when to move up or down the (food chain) as it were. Its true respect within a band and a brilliant example is when he's playing with billy gibbons and joe bonamassa at the Freddie king memorial, dereks solo completely blows joes and even billys solo out of the water but when hes not soloing he is calm collected and perfectly capable of just stepping back out of the limelight to play his piece of the puzzle and to be fair even when he does solo he does shun away the focus on him, he's said in an interview he likes the music to be at the front not him................I have major respect for Derek and he is so inspirational.
RQBassist I believe DT to be the epitome of admirable humility both on stage and in person!
I think he's the king of humble understated virtuosity because he seems as though he could less about the spotlight. He absolutely slays on slide guitar and can make most players shy away from following him. But he doesn't want that. I think Derek just loves the sound of playing with all his friends.
Pretty much the opposite of his wife here! Haha
Trucks is like an unknown God of the guitar, he overshadows any star that he backs up.... no lie!!!!
And I am now a Derek Trucks fan. Holy hell! I keep seeing tedeschi trucks pop up in things to watch but never clicked. The thumbnail looked like Mayer, King, and Kenny Wayne Sheppard! I'm glad I clicked. That was redickulous.
I love how this is pretty much just a jam session to them everyone’s just enjoying each others playing and be in each others presence
That was awesome even John was looking at Derek in awe and that's Purdy cool~
Hi Johnathan, I am pretty sure that's not Purdy.
This is the only time I've ever genuinely felt a man make a guitar SING especially from 3:30 to 4:30
I watch this video a few times a week and get chills every single time. Derek is something else, man. So inspiring...
High high praise Mr. Trucks. Getting a complement like that from the Great BB King, you know he meant it from from his soul. This is just an amazing heart warming moment.
Awesome & Fantastic Blues Performance Here!! I Loved It Alot!! Big Huge Thumbs Up!! Blues On!!
- Big Will / The Super Blues Universe
John Mayer has more than earned a spot on that stage. Trucks is like a musical freak of nature on slide and it's something that just out shines everything because it's a rare treat to find someone who not only plays slide but so unbelievably awesome as well. But Mayer has shown he is legitimate top shelf as blues and rock.
Never heard a guitar sing like that. Gives me goose bumps.
What a moment they shared! Mayer self-composed, King gushing over Derek, both Mr. and Ms Trucks humbled to be there🥲
Sometimes, you know something, but you don't realize you do. At 0:32 Derek stops and looks at BB because, as this whole get together is a bit of an homage to him, this is the perfect spot to put in the signature BB note. Which I alwayyyys heard, but never understood or noticed until I began to learn minor blues guitar. So, having heard this many times, and not thinking anything of it, and then going back and watching, and seeing Derek silently acknowledge it and BB snap along with him, I feel privileged to have lived at the time of guys like this.
the king's reply afterwards :))
"top dawg"
I can only dream to be able to transmit the amount of emotion in a solo like derek trucks does it. I am in awe of what he does
