He turns an instrument into a vehicle for his soul. That’s why his solos are so special….they speak to parts of us that words cannot touch. ❤
Great solo but he's always got plenty in the tank. He's one of the top players in the world. He melted my face off several times at Dead and Co. shows.
i guess you could say he stole your face off
Your face also gets queefed on a lot I've heard, so could have been that to.
Which hood you work at? Used to deliver chems there for ecolab.
🤣
Wish he had done ANYTHING interesting during the D&C summer concert I saw last year. It was stupid short and boring. He is a top tier player with so many more skills than most realize. Sad I didn’t get that when I saw him.
People often underestimate or dismiss his abilities due to his early popcorn roots. I’ve seen him live several times and he’s an absolute monster player and classic performer overall.
I never understand these comments, even his most poppy songs, especially the early ones, are technically not vanilla at all, it's either weird technique, weird chords or both, and then he sings at the same while playing in a differeny rhythm never losing a bit. Any guitar player will tell you that playing say Neon or who says whilst singing at the same time is much harder than these lead guitar solo's.
@@xdarrenxI absolutely agree. You shouldn't assume pop means easy and I don't know why you would make a comment which assume people dismiss his guitar ability because of his "pop roots". I mean for the most part John Mayer IS a pop artist anyway. As a guitarist of almost 20 years I can say that his guitar work in first two albums were definitely not basic.
It always infuriates me when I see people saying his playing is “less than average” like LOL??? He clearly makes the guitar sing far more soulfully than any one of us mere mortals could ever dream of. AND he’s stupidly good looking. Good for him, honestly. I personally love his music for how honest it is, how listenable it is, and how relatable it is.
Wow, he is incredible! The way he plays is literally breathtaking.
My absolute favorite musician to EVER LIVE!!! What a banger of a solo!
Goosebumps definitely!!! Love how the rest of his band is just as happy for him
I found this solo to be an interesting take on the outro solo. The charvel definitely opens up new techniques for his playing. When I saw him earlier in this tour, he used a silver sky. I heard a lot of similar themes between the two. Glad you enjoyed the show!
By far, this was already my favorite song off the new album, and I prayed that he would not only perform it, but solo the hell out of it when he played Seattle, and boy, oh boy... no one was ready for what he did. Insanity. He had a longer solo in Seattle (Night 1, anyway) and he used the same guitar... it sounded.. HEAVENLY. Made my whole night. Song length was over 8 minutes, with the solo portions taking about half of that. And while it shared some of the elements of this one in LA, it was totally unique, which is only a small portion of what makes John's playing so incredible to witness.
His phrasing with that Floyd Rose sounds so much like blues harmonica, it's amazing.
John is an insane player. Always amazes!
Woah. I’ve never heard a Floyd Rose used that way and I LOVE it! I’m blown away by how well he manages to integrate it into his bluesy playing. I did not think it was possible. John Mayer proved me wrong. And he proved that he’s one of the very best guitarists alive today.
This is all just stolen from Jeff Beck
@@theanthonyv Ok, guess I got some catching up to do then. ;)
He is one of those guitarists who just never stops amazing me.
Great sound and phenom solo. Thanks for sharing!
He was feelin’ it. Man amazing playing
I saw him do a solo, master class, with a drum stick. It was amazing
Guess I just feel like is my favorite JM song, and as of right now the second solo on the record is my favorite solo out of all artists. Watching his live performance of it was on my bucket list and boy oh boy it was everything I wanted and everything I didn't know I needed
He’s re-creating Derek Trucks’ slide voice with the tremolo bar. He’s doing a pretty good job - not the exact same but close enough and sounding great. Trucks is the best so that’s a compliment to Mayer
Before reading this I was thinking it’s crazy how he does that similar “vocal like” voice the way that Trucks does
I thought the same thing immediately. It's John's voice on the guitar in the end, but he's channeling some serious DT throughout.
It appears I’m not the only one who was hearing that
I get Trucks plus Jeff Beck vibes. Those whammy bar flutters are very Beckian.
Yes, Jeff Beck says hello.
Damn! Thanks for posting this!
I like the way he pays homage to previous guitarists without being contrived or derivative…this had Jeff Beck stamped all over it
I heard that as well.
I hear Jeff Beck as well. Still, it sounds good!
Definitely makes me think of Jeff Beck. I don’t think anyone uses a vibrato as tastefully as he does.
Tons of Jeff Beck, apparently nothing left to steal from Stevie, lol.
@@news603redux He’ll be on to Knopfler next
He’s one of the best musicians of our time.
One of the best musicians of the 21st century. I love this man and he is an amazing guitar player.
I was at the third night at The Forum and what an incredible end of that song! You said “powerful” and I think that nails it.
Saw him in Austin about a month after you took this vid. Great show, great musician. My wife and I are in our 60's and we were surrounded by 20-30 somethings. He's truly a minstrel for the ages.
Close you eyes and what do you hear (and see)? Jeff Beck, with JM's twist on it.
Killer solo: phrasing, techniques, blending of scales...DAMM!!!
YES......!!
Great video thank you for sharing it made my night
soon as i saw this on instagram i sent it to everyone! new fav mayer solo
Beautiful solo 🙌
Came down from Alaska and saw this show! I lucked out for sure, especially being my first John Mayer concert.
Literally in awe every time I see him play live. No other guitarists excites me/ inspires me like him. Pure genius.
Great video. Thanks
Wow there‘s a huge Derek Trucks quality to this solo. There‘s a huge slide vibe to this solo. Love it
Was thinking this exactly
I thought so too! It sounded like he was simulating a slide. Cool stuff
Damn, we think alike.
Yes, I hear him letting go and hitting open strings in between phrases like Trucks.
Definitely copping some Trucks with the swipes up and down the neck between phrases. But much more so, he’s directly copying Jeff Beck… like 100%
This guy's never misses a note !!!♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
That was a fantastic solo! Wow!
Absolutely World Class solo! Living legend.
The insta live he did a few years ago with this charvel is one of my guitar highlights period.
Great solo!!! Would love to see a video breaking down that gig. John is back!!!!!
THIS IS A FUCKING GREAT SOLO, One of the best ones i've seen on tis tour. Face melting.
Incredible
that was other-worldly! definitely hints of eddie, jimi and prince in that solo! #epic
The thing for me about John recently is that I feel like he's holding back. This solo reminds me of how he used to dominate performances. I don't know if the Charvel unlocked that for him as much as it did lubricate what he was feeling in the moment. But I've been missing this side of John for the better part of a decade. Glad to see it coming out again.
its the drummers fault
True wasn’t a big fan of the drummer in this tour
@@dan9521 Always is 😜
I think he realized many people aren’t there for the solos (and don’t know a good solo from a bad one) focus on the singing (I know who are these pod people). He did start taking it easy and just getting through the night. Younger John had more to prove and put tons of pressure on himself to really bring the wow playing. I am okay that he’s taken some of the unhealthy pressure off himself and focuses on 1 or 2 songs to really bring it. We need John around a long time so anything that keeps him in music longer is good with me. He really does give a great performance for sure!
Best guitarist of my time. Rock on mayer!!!🤘🏼
The Charvel made this solo so fun. I’m for the change!
Glad you got to see him live! Keep up the great content!!
Justin, we saw John on nights two and three (tuesday and wednesday) at The Forum. He used the Charvel on both nights. Tuesday he used it for Assassin, the tone/playing was off the charts. But ... still sounded like John. Wednesday, he pulled out the Charvel again for I Guess I Just Feel Like and absolutely slayed it. This was my 4-5th times seeing John. Best tour ever. Tuesday he used the "flip flop" color silver sky and a pink silver sky (to match his outfit). Wednesday he used a matte black SS and a gray SS (possibly a stone blue LE) that he gifted to a lady in the front row at the end of the encore.
PS Sharky's tone with the Victory V140s was legit. Might be worth discussing.
Aww I wish he played assassin the first night. I've yet to see him do that live
@@rebeccaclement99 first time he played it in 10 years according to the set list website
Seeing him live with dead and co was incredible. What a treat to see someone play like that in person
dude i don't think you're biased from seeing it live at all. This might legitimately be a top 10 JM solo all time.
Wooooow that’s a hot take.
Johns top 10 solos list does noooot have this on it. It’s a good solo but man, hyperbole surely
The vibe I got was: Imagine if EVH sat in with the Allman Brothers.
Oh hell no, his live solo with Ed Sheeran on Don't is even better. I love FRs but this is basic af FR improv. Not near the top 10 maybe mid 20s?
Love Johns playing. That dirty yet full of feel way.
That’s awesome… for JM 🤘🏽
Mayer’s final form is blues shredding and I’m so here for it
I just think that this is so great to see him use different guitars night and night for that solo
incredible mayers
I don’t know about the different approaches to and guitars used for the solo, but I really enjoyed your video because of your enthusiasm. Very nicely done! I will say that I’ve really enjoyed John’s playing with Dead & Co. If Chet Atkins were still with us, I’d hope that he’d bestow his Certified Guitar Player award on John.
wow and what a great sound you have got on this video !
A testament to his crew and the mix they can get in these arenas that are often notorious for not so great sound.
I saw him at the O2 in London in 2019 where I’ve never previously heard a good mix. But his show sounded incredible and proved to me that it was indeed possible!
Still yet to hear another arena show with such clarity
Wow thats one of the best solos i’ve ever seen him play, and i’ve seen a few
He's fucking crushing it this time out. These shows are great.
I was listening to the audio but wasn’t watching the video and thought he was playing a slide, very cool use of the FR!
That was a killer guitar solo, thanks for sharing. It really doesn't get any better does it!
Never actually watched John Mayer much, very nice. Looked like a hard working happy stage.
I got to listen to John Mayer speak at a seminar at Berkelee. He is, as far as popular musicians, the most underrated guitarist of the last 30 years. He’s an awesome musician. Cheers glad you got to check that show out that’s badass !
It’s cool that you dig him. But seriously, there are MANY lesser known guitarists out there who have more thoroughly mastered the instrument, or at least as much. Unlike them, Mayer has been exceptionally highly rated by the general public for the past two decades. If you really believe he’s ‘the most underrated player of the last 30 years’, then you might want to open your field of vision and discover the multitudes of amazing guys out there who very few people know, relatively speaking.
@@theanthonyv nah. I’m aware of the Julian lages of the world. You don’t have to assume I’m unaware just because I respect someone. In fact. Shut the fuck up to me :)
John Mayer is the best!!!!!!!!!
John is slowly absorbing Sharky’s abilities and adding to his bag.
The keyboard player on the right was jamming hard as well. Great video. Felt like I was there. Gotta watch it again. 👍
Yeah, awesome guitarist, simply awesome. Really tight great band as well.
I dream of seeing him live, I do hope he brings the tour down here to New Zealand!
Ammmazing!!❤🎶I Love jonh I Love músic só much!
He is a master Guitarst (c) Eric Clapton - I mean...he is just from another universe and I am so greatful and thankful to have seen him live many times - he is a BEAST
Cool vid. That's a nice looking Marshall by the way
glad you enjoyed the show my friend! we have to all meet up and catch one next time!
100% brother!!!
I was there too and it was AMAZING!!!!
Sometimes, John gets that same look that Prince use to get when his fingers would literally speak and voice what he was feeling and thinking when he soloed on the guitar
I'm starting to see John in a new light
I was there and the solo was so sick!
Lucky! 😁
Incredible in the beginning it almost sounds like slide guitar
There were sections that sounded like Derek Trucks to me!
Michael Lee Firkins does the best impression of a slide I’ve ever heard using a whammy bar. Listen to his self titled album from 1990. He also did a hot licks video in the 90’s showing how he does all of that stuff. It definitely blew my mind.
This was awesome but I still prefer the studio solo. I really enjoy the video of him recording multiple takes and then finally nailing the one he ends up using. Really cool seeing him work through it and put it all together cleanly.
IMHO he's become more comfortable letting his guitar parts sit within the broader mix of his live band of late. It's really opened up some new sonic avenues.
Just gotta on a concert when he’s in town!!!
Great stuff indeed. Any clue as to what strings he uses on the blue Charvel?
I was there too bro. Amazing
Saw this live too and my jaw was dropped
I was there on night 1 & 3, both nights it was his best solo of either show.
He is great.
I don’t think I’ve ever and I mean EVER seen Mayer to a Trem flutter or incorporate them into his solos. Pretty cool that it still manages to sound like John through all that.
Funny, this solo almost sounds Tyler Larson inspired to me. Incredible, thanks for sharing!
Yep!
JM always had this in his bag. He loves Jeff Beck and he played some EVH stuff too in the past. I think he also used a pink superstrat before moving to PRS.
When John brings the Charvel out, you know it’s gunna be good!
I love him 🌷
killer tone
I just saw him in Denver and he played the solo with the Charvel here as well- I had the same reaction as you when it popped up out of the stage: "WHAAAAAT?!?!?!" :)
Tone-wise I still prefer the Casino, it's really one of my favorite tones of all time. This exact solo with the Charvel AND that muffled tone would be crazy.
I like the Epi too but that amp tone from the recording is a tiny Fender Champ with an 8” speaker, that’s where most of that tone is coming from
Every blues player should play p90s. Pickups of the gods.
Jimi and Ed are looking down and smiling. The earthbound Jeff Beck is smiling nervously.
Wow!
Thank you Jeff Beck
Quite a few moments remind me of Jeff Beck - he also gets a slide guitar effect with the tremolo bar. VERY NICE!
Ok, I' so upset now that I've watched this video. I love John Mayer, and I always said I'd love to see him if he ever played again, and not only did he play last year, he played in L.A. where I live??!. What a shmuck I am. Hope it was a good show.
John’s playing is fearlessly creative⚡️
Boi been working on that whammy stick
That Marshall looks amazing 😦
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Holy guitar playing.
