If you hear Devin's feelings about his music being sold, this song makes total sense.
He's gotten into trouble with his record labels several times for suggesting his music should be free and accessible for all. He's openly struggled with the need for money to sustain his work and the jobs of people who make it all happen versus his desire to give his music to everyone who wants and needs it.
These days, Devin judges his success based on how well he feels he captured the moment in time that his music was created. That, to me, really resonates as individual creation; creativity through the lense of us as participants in the inspiration of life.

He tells everyone to record and share it all at the beginning of this video. He’s an amazing artist and human being.

After listening to Devin's podcasts, I came to believe that the song is not only about his disillusionment with the music industry as the corporate machine that it is, but also about having music itself- one of the most important things in his life and something that he has said saved him as a young man- tainted by all of the negative experiences he had. I think that the loss of enjoyment he no doubt experienced would have very much felt like grieving a death, as it were.

What I love about this song, beside the obvious emotion and beautiful nature of it, is the slowly and dramatically building intensity of this song. Each new verse just gets slightly more intense. Until that final crescendo of intense power. And how he rewords that one line of, "In things I am, are things that should not be" changes in the second verse to, "In things you are, are things I need to be", to finally conclude with, "In things I am, are things that HAVE to be", as though the final realization is that, despite how I may view myself or others, I am what I am and I need to deal with that. And so do you. It's just such a beautiful and profound track. Gives me chills no matter how many times I hear it.

I will always love the part “don’t die on me”, this is like gradient, but with voice. From pleading, almost prayer, to anger that keeps one going.

You have to be the very first reactor, I believe, that has finally listened to this song !
I always felt that out of all of Devin's song, this one that is from his very first album (ocean machine) is one of his most unique, and also one that must be the most interesting to sing as a singer (not throwing a challenge or anything Kappa).
The start of devin and in the industry was very, VERY rough. His albums barely sold at all despite being of great quality (even as strapping young lad) and with the way he works and produces his music, a label telling him how and when to do things were insufferable.

Thanks BB - Devin is hands down my favorite artist ever - and I grew up in the 60s This songs still fills my eyes with tears by the end. No artist ever made me cry so much - or fill my entire soul with joy. Devin does both, and that's beautiful Cheers

I agree. Ocean Machine is a masterpiece. And to think he almost didn't include Death of Music on that album. But I agree. Funeral, Bastard and Death of Music is the golden trio of that album. Just epic in a can.

If you feel like it, check out the original album version from 1997 - ua-cam.com/video/GjZkKk1qquk/v-deo.html
The RAH version imo has more focus on the vocals, the album version is layers upon layers upon layers with Devin's singing blended in and more in the background.

Since i still havent seen any vocal coaches react to any of these artists and i really hope you look at some of their songs.
    1. TK from Ling Tosite Sigure "copy light"(the first take version) or "unravel"(the first take version)
    2. Co Shu Nie "Asphyxia"(the first take live version) or "inertia"(the first take version)
    3. amazarashi "the seasons die one after another"(on the first take)
The reason i put the first take versions is because in my opinion theyre much better and have much more emotion.
I guarantee you will love all of them. If you react to them that would fully make my week.
They are truly amazing in every way
