Guitarist and songwriter Matt Farkas watches Devin Townsend Project perform Devin's trio of songs Funeral, Bastard, and Death of Music LIVE at the Royal Albert Hall in 2015. This is one of the most beautiful, emotional bodies of music I've ever heard. 😭
This reaction was chosen by my Patreon supporter Mincent Price. Thank you so much, Mincent!!
Music video: • Devin Townsend Project...
#devintownsend #oceanmachine #live
Finally someone reacting to something different than Kingdom...
Dude my thoughts exactly lol
Yeah!
No lie....these are better songs as well.
Fun fact, he was recovering from a severe flu at that concert, and still pulls off stuff like this.. Devin is simply amazing, I'm not sure we even deserve him tbh
What?? Seriously, I would have never guessed given the high quality of his performance. What a pro!
And this was after 2h30 of concert! Devin is an animal
I was there. no supprt act he did 2 x 1.5 sections. this bit was all performed towards the end of a 3hr show basically. nuts.
@@BuzzaB77 I know right? The man is a legend. A men amongst men. Only Devin could be at a subpar level and still outperform 99.9% of all other musicians. He is my own personal God.
Its hard not to tear up to Death Of Music there are so much feelings there
I found out recently a close friend has terminal cancer. The part of that song that goes "Don't die on me, don't go away
. When I need you here in my need." hits me hard every time and I think of him.
That Death of Music live version might be my favorite live performance of all time
Good man, this is the holy trinity of music for me, great to see someone going through it.
Glad you enjoyed it! Very much looking forward to diving into the rest of this album soon!
I’m not sure what the other comments were, but I think people are okay with just grooving along to the music, even if there are gaps where you don’t have much to say or the video ends up being a little long. I think it’s worth it for this trio of songs.
One of the great concert performances, ever.
Can't call them better, holy Trinity.
I'm beginning to see why they're referred to as that. 😍
I do not know that I understand everything that Devin does. But I believe every word - every note. He paints audio masterpieces in aural colors. This trilogy is so remarkable. To think he wrote this as a VERY young man. Astonishing. And you can listen to a ton of his stuff and still save for the channel. He has like 25 albums.... Glad you kept this together.
I'm with you brother. I'm the same way. Devin is God in my eyes. And I'm an atheist. But if anyone was able to make me believe in a higher power, it would be him. The man has this ability to literally place pieces of his soul into his music. You can't just listen to his music. You feel it. It touches your heart. This man has a talent that no other human being alive today has. One of the only artists I know who is exceedingly better live than on recordings. Not that his recorded albums suck. But live is where you really feel his art take shape. Every performance is unique in its own way. And this golden trio I think is the quintessential performances. Something was in the air that night. Pure magic. But the Plovdiv show is also one of my all time favorites.
And when you've thought Death of Music has reached its peak.. then it hits again.
Was definitely feeling it during that final section - goddamn.
@@MattFarkas - That final buildup in intensity, where Devin is pleading not to die on him, over and over, is so prolonged, yet so perfectly gradual. You couldn't program a supercomputer to build it up any better, and certainly not with the emotional intensity.
Ocean machine and synchestra is near perfection for me, soundtrack to my life at that time ❤❤
I'm not sure why an album like Physicist is always been underrated, but for me, is one of the BEST fusion albums ever, trash, pop, new age...folk. We have it all. And also, my fav album is Terria. His most personal work.
@@mikelferradas6923 I think it's mostly the production on Physicist was poor - I know it drives Dev crazy, which is why he re-recorded Kingdom... he's said he'd like to record most of that album all over again some day - but yes, the songs from that album are underrated
@@magusmelanie828 I'll be pleased if he re-record the álbum. I know that the sound was poor and noisy, but the ideas are great.
Devin is doing a live show on May 1st of the entire "Ocean Machine - Biomech" album, details on his web page
I saw!! Very excited!
Devin...one of the the very few living Gods walking this Earth
The look on your face for Death of Music - I think my own face does that when I hear it. It just sings to something within the soul. He's never saccharine, Devin - he's healing somehow.
I think the camera went out of focus just as it was happening, but I absolutely teared up during that song. It's one of the most beautiful things I've reacted to on this channel.
@@MattFarkas I'm sop glad you got to hear it and felt so deeply. It hit me like a tonne of bricks the first time and to this day (10+ years later) it's almost a spiritual thing to sink into for me.
1997. Rediscovered Devin after my first encounter with Steve Vai in 1993/1994. Never ceased to amaze since then. In fact he gets even more interesting with time.
I did hear he worked with Vai for a bit. Would be interested in hearing the music that came out of that!
@@MattFarkas The album "Sex&Religion" and Vai solos on songs "Thriumph", and "Singularity". Probably more. You can also find some life played Songs with Vai&Devin on UA-cam.
Interesting you mentioned that you didn’t get into Devin until you’d listened to Genesis. I’m a child of the 70’s and early Genesis touched my soul. I haven’t had that same passion for any music since, until I stumbled across Devin a few years ago. Although the sound is completely different, it touches the same deep piece of me that Genesis did 40 years ago. Thanks for the correlation
Haha, PG-era Genesis is my favorite band and I do think it prepared me for Devin, however in this case I was probably talking about Devin's song Genesis as that was the first thing of his I had really listened to. 🙂
That whole concert, almost 3 hours, was brilliant!!!! He is my favorite person next to my kid. Im convinced he is not of this world.
Saw Devin live in November 2019 in Hamburg during the " Empath" tour supported by "Haken". It was absolutely amazing. Will never forget. I sang and shouted all along and my voice was gone for a day. No idea how he gets through this...
Devin created a guitar pedal so that you can emulate his massive sound from your own bedroom! Look up the Ocean Machine, named after his first solo-album, the same album these three tracks come from. It's basically a reverb into an echo into another reverb, it's nuts.
I'm actually really curious about this - might have to look into it. 🤔
Thanks man, appreciate that you kept the trio together and let it just wash over you. Funeral came to be when Devin was 16 and was for the first time in his live faced with death. A classmate was killed over hit hat and Devin was asked to speak at the boy's funeral. All 3 of those are tugging at the heart strings.
Agreed with the other suggestion, if you do end up doing Deadhead, pick Plovdiv.... RAH gets blocked.
Oh, and if you're on Plovdiv anyway, check out Higher!
Appreciate the suggestion and advice, Zhgarr! I did read up a bit on the story behind those songs and specifically what Funeral is about. You can definitely hear the emotion in the way he sings it. What a phenomenal track - very much looking forward to listening to the rest of the album!
You do have to see the acoustic version of Funeral, either Emgtv version or the one from Cbc music. I like the one from Cbc music better. It hits so much harder.. And his use of reverb and delay is stunning
Thanks for posting the full version too. I was hoping they would just cough up the $5 for Patreon. The comments section gets a little dicey at times lol Cheers
It's alright, better to know that most people don't like clip-style reactions so I won't mess with them further. Hope you enjoyed the video, Mincent!
that percussion instrument is a "Vibraslap". It's only known previous use of course being in either western films or snake documentaries.
Devin is a BEAST!! A genius and such an amazing musician
I will never tire of this man and his music. Nor will I tire of watching people react to his godliness's talents. Especially musicians and producers who truly understand just how amazing he really is. A lamen can listen to Devin and still be floored and emotionally captivated by the man. But understanding Devins technical prowess and song structuring is a whole different animal. This man has placed a piece of his heart & soul into every song he's ever written and recorded. And somehow manages to dig deep and show us his soul with every performance. They're unique in their own way. But this RAH performance of this golden trio are hands down the best he's done. Just amazing. And The Death of Music. My word. Every time it brings me to tears. Just so much power. It's incredible.
Bastard is Lydian heaven. so many suspended 9ths that become the #11 of the b6 chord. #chordgasm.
If you haven't done Deadhead from this same show, i highly suggest doing that. If you have, may i suggest checking out Borderlands off of his newest album. Unfortunately there aren't any good live performances, unless you want to checkout the live in Toronto version which is phone recorded. The sound isn't good, but the performance is hilarious, as Hevy Devy always is. The studio version is really good. Very different from these songs.
Appreciate the suggestion, David! I'm pumped for my next Devin reaction!
Holy fuck!! The HOLY TRINITY!!!! YES!!!
I didn't disappoint. Still listening to these songs months later!
So cool. I was fortunate to discover Devin in the late 90s and my musical world has been significantly adjusted thanks to this man. Literally 75% of his songs are incredible, and most of the others are in the same ball park. Thanks for sharing and keeping it real... Cheers!
I seen Devin live. Was right in front of him. Like 2 ft away. It was incredible .I was in a trance with tears rolling down my cheeks.
I think I would be too. I can only imagine what this music sounds like washing over you live - sounds almost religious!
Thanks Devy is THE man.....please try ASTERISM live/or battle sessions, Dawn,Stars, light in darkness......incredible young talents
Hey, great video and thanks for sharing your first listen to this amazing music. It's cool that, as a content creator, you're considerate of sharing your first listens with the viewers, but consider yourself too. Perhaps on a deeper level, as someone who seems authentically drawn to the magic that is Devin's music, you owe it to yourself to listen to an album or two of his alone, in private; camera off, eyes closed. meant
Oh believe me, that definitely happens! After I react to Devin's music I usually put it on my playlist and enjoy it fully by myself.
Don't know if it was mentioned, but when Devin first came into the scene he managed to tour with the guitar legend himself Steve Vai's Sex and Religion Tour as a lead vocalist. Devin's very humble but he has some serious chops both vocally and with his guitar work!
He's quite possibly one of the most talented musicians on the planet. Songwriting, vocals, guitar playing...it's insane.
Do not forget Devin plays in open C tuning as well. This may be why it is difficult to identify what he is doing.
About 20 years ago I wrote a letter (imagine that!) to Devin asking him to allow me to use 'The Death Of Music' in my student short film.
He actually wrote back and gave me permission to do so. The film was kind of crap, but it had an AWESOME soundtrack.
Bit late and didn't read all the comments but the "rattling" instrument is a vibraslap.
Nice reaction video! Out of the 3, Bastard is my favorite but Death of Music is really something else. I'm not a concert goer just, because crowds give me panic attacks and though I love metal, I hate loud music (go ahead and laugh). If Devin was performing near me, I'd go see him hell or high water.
Bastard has become my favorite too. That main riff is too awesome!
@@MattFarkas I agree! The three songs mesh well together. Some sweet guitar play!
Amazing how much mileage he gets out of that open C tuning
Good Reaction! Please check out "Kingdom", the EMG version!!!
Kingdom is on my list!!
Devin Townsend likes to have Anneke Van Giersbergen sing in much of his music. Have you ever reacted to Devin Townsend with Anneke Van Giersbergen as a guest musician? Highly recommend a reaction with not only Anneke Van Giersbergen with Devin but Anneke Van Giersbergen in her old band the Gathering with their song "Travel" or Anneke Van Giersbergen in the Ayreon project or the Gental Storm project as well. Anneke van Giersbergen and the Gathering heavily inspired Thomas from Nightwish and Floor Jansen as well.
Beginning of video: "I think this is a bit long so I'll probably cut it up and give you the highlights..."
Proceeds to listen to the entire video because Devin Townsend is an effing God. 🤘🏻😂
And think about this. Devin almost didn't include The Death of Music on the Ocean Machine album. His bassist back then who played on the album told him he's an effing idiot if he didn't include it. So you can thank John 'Squid' Harder for us ever being graced with its beauty.
Haha! Thanks a ton, man... giving it a thumbs-up off the jump! (I did go ahead and join your Patreon, anyway) ;-) P.S. I can't get the Discord link to work....
discord.gg/qxuhnBn *should* work. Hopefully. Haha. Let me know if it doesn't and I'll try something else.
The Devin Townsend album in question is Ocean Machine: Biomech his first ever album I belive.
if you have not you should react to Deadhead live (From The same gig he did at London Royal Albert Hall).

Just a heads up for all the people telling you to react to Deadhead from this same concert... This particular version gets DMCA Striked all the time, so if you want to listen to it, try the Plovdiv version which is as good if not better !
Death of music is to this day one of the most unique songs I've ever heard, it's so haunting...
Appreciate the heads up, Gardukk!
@@MattFarkas Speaking of Plovdiv, that's the "other" famous concert (like RAH) of his with full orchestra and choir backing him up. Anything from Plovdiv is reaction worthy, you did Failure iirc. However if you want to do a comparative reaction the opening track TRUTH might be an idea. One of those songs that Devin has re-released on different albums, originally being the opening track on Infinity (1998) and later the opening track on Transcendence (2016). There is a third version still, much more raw if you will perhaps even Strapping Young Lad level, on the Synchestra DVD. Comparing that raw guitar driven version to the penultimate full orchestral Plovdiv version might be neat.
ua-cam.com/video/VvvlyD2_rnU/v-deo.html The "heavy" version, with an amazing intro solo unique to this version.
ua-cam.com/video/jhHxvAgjvEo/v-deo.html Plovdiv concert version.
Ps. Wall of text, sry.
Pss. Devin is a Sony artist, and SME likes to block...a lot. Fair warning.
hi Matt! did you know Farkas means "Wolf" in Hungarian? it is often used as a surname. do you have Hungarian ancestors? :)
Hey Peter, I do! I'm 1/4 Hungarian, my grandfather's parents both immigrated here from Hungary in the early 1900's. It's a great name, I'm very proud of my heritage! Hoping to visit Hungary someday soon...have never actually been before. It seems like a very beautiful place though.
@@MattFarkas that's awesome! I hope you can get here one day :)
I dont know if this is true , but i heard that funeral was supposedly one of if not the first song Devin ever wrote. Other thing was it was supposedly written about a kid named Jesse that got killed for his hat that he went to school with.
This could be total B.S, but if anyone knows i would like to know.
I recall hearing this story somewhere as well, an interview I think.
Child in time by Deep Purple. Screaming beautifully.
Deep Purple is one of my favorite bands ever, so I can't do a first time reaction to Child in Time (which is amazing, btw.) But maybe I can find some other way to do a video on the band that's not a reaction. :) Thanks for the comment!
Do march of the poozers live next
Honest review of your reaction: I liked most of it, but was dismayed by the number of times you talked over some element broke the flow / mood and missed some of the nuances entirely.
Not trying to be harsh, really. I say that to say this. With all you said, the complete LACK of reaction during the last half of "The Death of Music" spoke louder than you saying 1000 words. You were, quite properly stunned speechless at the unmatched powerful performance of this utterly unique rare gem of a musical masterpiece. For that alone, great reaction! Thanks for listening. ))
It's a tough balance - it's not really a reaction if I'm not...well, reacting. 😂 I try to keep my commentary to just short statements until the end to avoid missing things. I also don't stop the video to talk like a lot of reactors because I feel like I lose the flow of the song.
The ending of this video hit me especially hard, because I had been going through a tough time when this reaction was filmed and the song really spoke to me. I've become absolutely obsessed with DT since watching this.
Glad you liked the reaction!
@@MattFarkas Sorry I took too long replying, Matt. I got busy. I am so glad you took my critique in the spirit in which it was intended. That says a lot about your character. You seem like a good guy. I wish you all the best!
I always like hearing about DT converts. It;s like something once you hear how great, unusual & different he & his music is, it starts to make you less satisfied with "the usual".
Hugs! ☺
turns out.. steve vai wasnt the most talented member of his band.. lol
