That should work out let us know. Usually, I just take a piece of wire off a wire brush and pull it out with flyers and that works fine. Thank you for watching it all your support.

Followed your advice (video) to the letter on my 2000 Sportster 883, which hadn't run in about 4 years. I tried other avenues first. Seafoam in the gas, carb cleaner, cleaned the spark plugs, but she'd only run on the choke. She surely sounds sweet now! Thanks for the help. When I told my garage guy what I was planning to do, he was like "what??"..ha,ha. But I did it, am proud of myself, and she purrs like the big cat she is. :)

Discovered you videos when i decided try and get my sons 2006 HD 1200 sportster started after 5 years of sitting in my garage. Excellent library you have built! Extremely helpful, even though i’m already sucked into this little project to the tune of ~$800 so far and not yet finished. Just removed the fuel tank to clean and replace fuel valve assembly and the overflow line disintegrated in my fingers. Just a suggestion, a video on doing an overhaul on a bike that has been sitting this long that make it safe to ride would be helpful.

This is an Awesome Video. I'm gonna try this tomorrow in the daylight. My '94 FLSTC has been sitting for 1 winter year - wouldn't start up for more than 30 seconds, put in more fuel stabilizer - life got in the way - child and all -- now has been sitting for roughly 2 years -- gonna drain gas, clean carbs, and recharge battery -- hope it works. I miss the beast. Sorry Ed.

Amazing video, got my 95 Sportster back up and running by following your very clear steps. It would only run on idle and would stall with any throttle. Now it's running smoothly again. Thanks for taking the time to show us how easy this is to do.
Only difference with mine was I didn't notice any brass piece when I took the top piece off. I also cleaned a third "jet" toward the back of the bottom of the carb.

So far I’ve changed the air filter, oil filter, did my engine and transmission oil change, gonna do spark plugs tommorow. She’s only got about 11k and runs great. Won’t start without full choke in the morning. Once she’s warm she fires up and idles pretty good. I hope once I watch this video a few more times and I give it a shot, to clean the carb, hopefully it’ll run even better. Thanks man!!

It's a Japanese carb, so the screws are JIS (Japanese Industry Standards) which are like superior Philips screws with a "+" and an "X" combined with angles for a better grip. Use a JIS screwdriver on them for a super-tight grip on the screw without slipping. You can buy really cheap (low price, not low quality) JIS screwdrivers or screwdriver bits in different sizes from Amazon or eBay. The difference is amazing you may never strip another JIS screw. I found out about these when I started wrenching on my Miata.

As a recent graduate of Motorcycle Mechanics Institute of Phoenix, Harley Davidson Late Model course I will sadly admit that we only got to touch a couple dirt bike carbs in the prerequisite classes. I assume there is not too many differences in functionality, but only how the carb is packaged.
I will be servicing a Carbed Iron 883 for the first time and will be rebuilding / rejetting it; it sat outside in the PNW for a year with old fuel.
I have although rebuilt a 4 barrel Holley on a '66 Riviera, but that is a different beast all together.

1996 sprt xl, Same question and problem in book only shows #3 as a regular washer (no sleeve) and on top of cap not under cap, I inserted the brass sleeve washer on top of the black cap for the throttle bracket to have a washer.
It sounded as if you inserted it "insert" before the cap as if the insert-washer-head went under the plastic without any visual of insert-washer-head placement.
Also, does it matter what hole gets the insert-washer-head side under cap because the underside of the black cap has two alignment tips diagonally. I guess the insert-washer-head side of the brass insert goes adjacent either diagonally holes not alignment holes.
Please detail more, the Clymer book must be older than the upgraded washerhead-sleeve - "insert". Thanks for any express in the matter. Thnkx

Does it matter if the fuel line runs strait up and over where the breather/rocker box is? Or can the fuel line go almost strait back between the carb and jug and under the breather bolt?

I am a big fan of running it the way the factory did. Run it parallel with choke cable. Hope this helps. Thank you for your Sub Mat. Any questions just ask. Let us know how this works out. Ride Safe and have a great day.

@@TwoWheelRocco Thanks for the quick response. Picked up an 02 sporty and your videos have been very helpful. I will rerun the fuel line. I replaced the choke cable using your video as guidance and it worked out great. I couldn't for the life of me remember which way the fuel line went between the jugs and running it strait up seemed too tight to me so I ran it strait back but was concerned that it rubbed the jug a bit too much. Thanks again! Any recommendations on getting rid of a bit of decel pop I'm getting when letting off the throttle going downhill?

A/G screw Start 1/2 turn out from where it is will give it more fuel at idle. Should fix that decelerations piping. Let us know how this works out.

Great video. Simple and straight forward.. I. went through the process on a 04 sportster. it fires up and idles great, even drives better than ever, but when I give it extra throttle, the engine floods and won't run. Did I mess up a jet, or could it be something else?

    • @TwoWheelRocco
      @TwoWheelRocco  7 років тому +1

I would go over the float needle and seat, needs to be cleaned or replaced...Not seating proper.causing flooding...If it happens again buy new float needle at Harley for about $24.00 ...Fuel kills rubber tip... let me know how this works out.

1 Thing I feel (you) needed to point out : Removing The small base (4 screws) - done after removing the cover - use a 'FLAT TIP' Phillips - I spent about 45 minutes to remove the 4th - after a light strip. The screws only need 'initial pressure' (like a 2 man push of heavy object - 1st person 'holds' firms until 2nd effort). They are not wound in there BUT there are some type of allow that is less dense than the aluminum carburetor - so it's like a cold stick of butter in saran wrap. I used a screwdriver similar to yours but took the tip from one of those 'variable' strip clips that has different heads. Pretty funny trying to make a flat-head slit after the small strip. Then I began searching, searching, and devised that plan. Just for a little better fuel feed...hah.

The plastic 'seal' or ring around the rubber seal - for the top removal. You can tell just how HARD I've been pushing My 1200. There's a black 'heat bubble' - burn & expansion. I should replace this soon. I'm going to go run some on Monday...maybe put on 200 miles just to get my balance back. Great Video!

Almost. I forgot to mention, until now, that the ones who do this should also ensure their throttle cable reseats into its small bracing area. After removing the carb, from the bike, I had pulled it enough to where the cable was sticky just a couple of MM out of this metal feed port. After priming the carb, several times, I started the bike up - noticing the throttle handle 'sticking' - and the bike 'REVVEEDD !!!" I heard the Rev Limiter kick in. Neighbors probably thought I was trying to show off. LoL.

I’ve cleaned the carburetor to the tea of the video (great explanation btw) an also checked my fuel line. The bike runs when the choke is on but every time I go to turn the choke off the bike dies. Same bike as the one you have in the video. Any ideas? I’d really appreciate your help. The bike has been sitting for almost a year.

Is it normal for carb sportsters around this year to need a lot of warm up after cold starting? If i start my bike up and go it needs choke for a mile or so with normal throttle, if i try to open up the throttle i will get a pop noise and lose power for a split second per pop. Would would be causing that issue?
