Growing Our Food In The Winter | A Winter Greenhouse Tour & What Seeds We Are Planting In January

  • Time to get planting for the 2021 growing season! We're starting some of our seeds in our winter garden greenhouse, and starting some in our seed starting area inside the house. Dave goes over some of the seeds we start very early for growing our food in northern Ontario.
    We heat the greenhouse with a combination of wood and electric heat right now. With night time lows in the -20s, we can't risk losing our plants to the cold winter nights in the greenhouse.

    And I thought we were the only ones lucky enough to have a butterfly in January. It's been around for a week buzzing us upstairs. Putting our seed order together today. Our greenhouse was our trial run but a dead elm came down on it in October. I'm milling lumber for the next few weeks to have ready for the building season and some will be for greenhouse ver. 2.0 . Bigger and better.

    Hey Dave thanks for the video man. I really didn't know that you could even grow all throughout the year. I thought winter was outta the question...pretty cool setup you have in the with the wood stove..I'll keep that in mind when I finally get our farm to the point of building a greenhouse. For now I'll start my seeds in the house and go from there. I just got my seed delivery the other day, got my trays, got my rack...I just needs my lights and I'm good to go. I just need to figure out when to start and which seeds...I'll have to study the info on all the seed pack, but I do plan on saving lots of seeds at the end this year so I'll need tp buy less for the following year. Love this video bud, Chad.

    • @Wilderstead
      @Wilderstead  3 роки тому +1

      No problem Chad! Growing in winter has its challenges. It's possible though.
      Over the next few weeks, we'll add videos as we start seeds. So it should give you a decent idea of when to start various things. Or at least an idea of when we start them. If you are intent on saving seed from your crops, make sure you are buying heirloom seed that *should* produce seed true to their parents. Cheers bud!

    haven't tried as of yet, but saw some other homesteaders using hay bales, then activate them with rabbit poo to generate heat to grow seedlings on to keep them warm. I have overwintered kale and collard greens, seen others do it with carrots and other veggies, they won't grow but if you had enough of them could continue harvesting fresh veggies all winter in a greenhouse, there's tonnes of other cold weather plants too that will preserve all winter in the ground ..... that way you don't have to bother preserving, just leave in the ground, harvest when needed !

    • @Wilderstead
      @Wilderstead  3 роки тому

      Yeah, we've played with that a bit. The size of this greenhouse doesn't allow for enough water container to hold very much heat. We'd sacrifice a lot of usable space. For now we'll just stick with the woodstove and the heater. It's not much work at all really. We have plans for some different heating systems this spring. Cheers!

    I saw a woman in Alaska put up bubble wrap she saved from packaging and put it up on side lights next to her door to insulate the windows but still let in light. It's a thought, may help on the windows closest to the seedlings. I do know the foiled bubble wrap insulation works great for lowering the temp in my dining room from a west facing windows in the summer. 😁

    Can you ever have enough greenhouse space? Woohoo! Lavender, I tried to start some and it didn't grow, ticked me off, so I'm optimistic about this year. Hmm, anyway to run that warm air under your growing bed? Great Job! You are inspiration to get my butt in gear!

    • @Wilderstead
      @Wilderstead  3 роки тому

      If you are able to find the ‘Munsted’ variety of lavender, it’s quite easy to germinate and grow. The tray I planted in the video has already sprouted! No way to heat those beds yet, but it’ll be an upgrade we do later this year. The soil is sitting between 10 and 20 degrees through the night, so not too bad for the cold season crops. Cheers, Eric!

    Thanks for the greenhouse tour and seed starting walk through, I enjoyed it. How many seedlings will you be starting this year? 3, 4, 500? It doesn’t take long to get to those kinda numbers when your doing 36 at a time! I built an unheated hoophouse over the garden this past fall. I’m not sure how to maximize it potential this spring...

    • @Wilderstead

      @@Wilderstead thanks for the reply! :) In 2019 I did about 150 seedlings (just for my garden), in 2020 I did about 300 (and gave some away to friends and family). @@Wildersteadjust saying it seems like an awful lot of trees you're burning down to keep a few veggies alive. There's more efficient greenhouse designs for winter growing, walapini for example.

    • @Wilderstead
      @Wilderstead  3 роки тому +3

      We’ve explored many options for our greenhouse. Living on the Canadian Shield, a walapini is impossible. We have 12 inches of topsoil, then bedrock. We’re not too interested in blasting the area with dynamite to make that happen.
      We harvest all of our wood from our property here. And it might surprise you that we haven’t taken down a single living tree here. Forest management is something that we take very seriously. All of our fire wood comes from dead standing or trees that have been downed in storms.
      In a week or so, the greenhouse will be full of plants. Infact, many of these seeds have already germinated both in the house and in the greenhouse. As they germinate inside, the trays are moved out to the greenhouse where they’ll stay until they are either eaten or planted out in the spring.

    • @Wilderstead
      @Wilderstead  3 роки тому +2

      We also treat it very much like a workshop, and an area outside to get warm when doing outdoor chores... everything is multipurpose here!

    • @G33K177
      @G33K177 3 роки тому

      Have you looked into passive solar greenhouse? Just as easy to build as this one, and you got the wood for it! I built one like this in quebec and let me tell you even 12 inches make a lot of difference. We can keep tomatoes all year long in this one, but they don't produce as much obviously
