  • Don Bosco visited Rome in May of 1884, four years before his death. Just as he was about to leave the eternal city, Don Bosco had a letter written to the Oratory to relate a dream of the greatest importance. He had this dream on one of the nights that he had been feeling sicker than usual. He told Father John Baptist Lemoyne about it in several installments, ordering him to write it down.
Father Lemoyne then redrafted the letter with only the passages that did not deal with the Oratory superiors. When Father Michael Rua read it to them one evening after prayers, the boys were enraptured, especially when the saint wrote that he had read into their consciences. After he returned home, there was a steady coming and going of boys in his room, all of them wanting to know if he had read their conscience, and if so, what he had seen. This had two principal effects: the beginning of a reform in the life of the Oratory and the dismissal of some boys who only seemed to be excellent in their conduct. The following is the complete account of the dream…

I realized today that like these boys, I don't believe that I am loved. So many children of God don't know they are loved because they never had parents, role models, or religious that truly showed them love. We were made by God, who is love. Without it, we become depressed. These role models were supposed to be God's love. A living example.

Yeah, I know exactly what you mean. Part of me doesn't really believe it either. I know on an intellectual level that God loves me, but I don't really feel it on a secure, bone-deep level. Even though I have an extraordinary mystical relationship with Him. Even though. I have major trust issues with Him because I've spent my entire life alone. I never got too close to anyone and never had anyone to rely on.
So now when God does stuff that messes with my life that causes suffering, I really, really resent it. If somebody has trust issues, causing them to suffer will simply make it worse.
