I've got big osciloscope that I got given to me years ago and I get headache even thinking of learning it. Bought same one that you use on video from ebay. Smooth wave form's can be applied to live all together. Clipping (😡) can cause heat and damage to anything. Radionics has proven healthy frequencies enhance growth. Basically the voltage is top to bottom. The time is left to right. The voltage setting tells you how many volts each line/division on the screen represents. The middle line of the voltage is 0. Notice the yellow arrow pointing to it on the far left. You have 4 lines above and 4 lines below it. So when the units are set to 20v this scope can show +80v and -80v. If your measuring a headunit rca where the max voltage is 3 or 4 volts, then set your units lower, like 2 volts. Then you'll see +8v and -8v. The voltage units is kinda like zooming in and out. The time units work similar, but it spreads things left to right. If you have a portable scope that doesn't show the RMS voltage, and you want to know that, you can add a digital multimeter to the speaker leads see both devices at the same time.
@@stereomojo No problem. BTW, the trigger is just the voltage level setting that stabilizes the image. With sine waves you only need the trigger level a little above or below the 0v line. It's the purple arrow on the far right of the screen. Yours is set a little below the 0v line, which is fine for most applications. You can do a lot of other stuff with the trigger level such as capture a pulse of voltage to study, but most folks don't need to get into those details.
It's the same as this amp. You play your tone (at 0dB, -5, -10, etc) then roll up the volume. As volume goes up, the voltage coming out goes up (both rca and speaker out). You can see when the signal starts to distort. Knowing when the HU or amp starts to clip is nice, but I still set my gains by ear.
@JasonWW2000 my comment was a suggestion so others can learn. Setting gains by ear is flat out wrong. Everybody has done it before but it's still not the right way.
@@jarrodbrennan121 I hate to break it to you, but after doing this for 35 years I can safely say that there is no correct way of setting gains. Its always a compromise. I can do it by ear, no problem. I tend to get better results that way compared to the more traditional setting of mids and highs amp to -5dB and sub amp to -10dB. I guess if you're just starting out you should probably stick to the more basic methods just to make sure you're not going to damage your speakers.
I used one of these to help my son out with his audio system. We were all good until we put thisnon the output of the amp. The whole wave form on the screen was bouncing up and down as soon as we barely adjusted the gain up? Any idea on why that is? We tried a few different test tones but didnt make a difference. Was a 1500 watt amp.
I have this same one and want to more about setting it up and also what the amp setting should be before using this to set the gain talking out lpf and hpf
Have you tested the PRV Audio QS800.4 2 ohm amp ? I'm actually in the market for an amp and would like to see if it's a good amp at $125 . Also this is SFW . Thanks
Yeah, I wanna say the manual says it’s good to 50v, but I think I’ve had mine to 65v. An 8k would be over 100v. Now this is talking about a real 8k. It’s plenty good for a HU.
@stereomojo it's definitely a real 8k lol I've had one of these handheld scopes in my Amazon cart for months wanting to test the HU, after watching this I think I will because your explanation helped 🤙
@@Chris-B-Bassin If you want to test higher voltages you should look at some of the 2 channel handheld scopes from Hantek (2C42) and Owon (HDS242) that are around $115. Those are quality units that are accurate and can be used for a wide range of applications. There's a ton of really cheap scopes on the market, but I would be weary of their quality and accuracy if you want to use it for electronics repair. If you're only usage is to check for clipping, then any of the cheap ones would be adequate. You might even consider a tablet scope to get a bigger and clearer image.
I just came in from trying to use this on a bass amp. So it is possible to have timing or volts so far away that you can only correct so far with timing then go back to volts and get it closer then go back to timing? I have no idea if I worded this correctly
@@stereomojo thank you I have one that the charger they sent never fitted so I found one that work but for some reason when there no sound 40hz being played with it hook up to head unit front speaker wires I’m getting like lines that should be dead if nothing being played throw miles like yours but yoir seems To have a green line at the top I’m Not to convince when I turn mine on there is no software brand just black screen then it loads up it’s strange

You should do another video about checking preout voltage on head units to get the cleanest, strongest signal.

This is a nice little tool. I had my amp clipping pretty good on the gain setting I was running. Not anymore! 😄
