Is Jomtien a good place to live? Does Jomtien Beach offer expats enough to retire in Thailand?

  • I've stayed in Pattaya for 9 nights now. Spent an hour each morning walking along Beach Road which is a great start to the day. I was about to head straight to Bangkok, but decided instead to head to Jomtien Beach where a lot of expats choose to retire. Could I live here?
Is Thailand a good country for expats to live or retire to? Is Pattaya a good place to live? Low cost of living, diversity, culture, weather, food and scenery entice foreigners to live in Thailand. Pattaya is a great spot by the sea. Thailand is regarded as the "land of smiles" with Thais being welcome and warm people. Could you live here?

I live in the condo complex where the ladies unloaded the TV: 10th floor, 2br, ocean view, 60 s/m. B11,000/m on a 1 year contract. Older building but well maintained with a lot of facilities and restaurants on the ground level. Been there 2 years and quite content. I don't really like the Jomtien Bar scene, mostly beer bars, many targeted at particular nationalities. Most of the staff are older than you see in Pattaya but there are a few younger ones.
There is a huge restaurant variety with most popular ethnic variations and generally very reasonable prices. Mostly older expats, many with older Thai wives or gf's.
Huge Russian presence. The night markets are 90% Russian clientele but while you hear a lot of winging about them, I've personally never had any kind of issue with a Russian.
Jomtien, post-covid has become a hugely popular weekend destination for Thais from Bangkok and the industrial corridor. Both Beach and 2nd Rd can get very congested weekends, especially 3 day weekends
The Pratumnak Hill area is distinct from Jomtien Beach. Lots of condos and restaurants. Downside is no Baht Bus service so getting around is less convenient but it's a worthwhile area to check out.
Jomtien Beach is a great place for my 70 year old self. Not really a lot to do but once one learns the in's and out's of doing nothing, it's quite nice.

I’ve been to about 50 countries, for an older man like me now 71 the Jomtien/Pratanmak areas suits me just fine, been here 4 years now. Have spent sometime in all the SE Asian countries, all have pros and cons! Having a motorbike and car, is a great advantage too imo! The only other place in the world that can compare, as regards a beach by the city, would be Rio de Janeiro, especially Ipanema beach, but it’s far more expensive and the locals don’t speak much English! I found the local people in Cuba very friendly and liked to invite me at the beach to eat food together, I can speak a little Spanish! Can’t believe you hardly got any Thai lady’s smiling at you, I get in constant trouble with my Thai girlfriend when other attractive Thai ladies smile at me, she gets very jealous! I guess for me if it wasn’t for having a loving Thai girlfriend for the last four years, I had to ditch my Filipina girlfriend, as my flights were cancelled because of the virus and in the end decided to stay in Thailand!

I have to agree with your comment about Filipinas being allergic to working out or walking anywhere.
Btw if you want Thai women to smile you need to spend money on her first which is the Esan culture. Doesn’t matter if you are young handsome. They don’t care, it’s all about money in this culture

I get what you're saying about a tourist vibe, but what do you want to do with your time when you do find the perfect spot? Apart from the beach, bars, restaurants etc, I think everyone needs a hobby. In my opinion, Filipinos are the friendliest people in the world, and the interactions are priceless, even if the Philippines isn't perfect. For me, I just wish it wasn't in the Ring of Fire, but so many advantages in the Philippines too, like the visa and English being widely spoken. Thai women are probably more beautiful in general and they keep their looks longer than Filipinas, but there's a slight coldness or something I can't quite put my finger on... they are into money and not as trustworthy as a good Filipina. Thailand is a bit cheaper and better infrastructure. I see a lot of guys go to the Philippines and find a woman, then settle in Thailand. Best of both worlds.... but then again, staying single and free could be a better choice. It's just so hard to know!
