Why not live in a number of Asian countries, rather than settle in just one?

- Where is the best country to live or retire to in Asia? I hear this question a lot. But why do you need to settle in just one place rather than alternating between a number of Asian countries?
What are the Pros and Cons OF TRAVELLING around neighbouring Asian countries?
Travelling is so much easier now as opposed to when I travelled around Asia fifteen years ago using a guidebook. I’ve travelled so much between neighbouring Asian countries that it feels so effortless for me.
Once you’re living in Asia it’s pretty inexpensive to fly between neighbouring Asian countries and over the past 18 months I’ve spent periods of time in 5 other countries. A month in Vietnam where I just visited 5 places, 2 places in Thailand over 3 weeks, 6 weeks in Kuala Lumpur, a month each in 2 different states in India and more recently 7 weeks in Tokyo.
So I’m staying longer in these countries to get to know them better.
I imagine it’s not that easy for expats who’ve retired in the Philippines with a family here, but a lot easier for single guys or guys travelling with just a girlfriend or wife without baggage.
In the internet age It’s so much easier now to rock up in different country, buy a local Sim card, get connected online, book your hotel accommodation or AirBnB apartment for a week or month without having to tie yourself down to a long contract. Having Google Maps on your phone guiding you wherever you want to go either by foot or public transportation. Plus Having instant access to restaurant and hotel reviews.
The variety and Spice of Life of travelling to and experiencing new cultures will always be interesting. You’re less likely to get bored if you’re permanently on the go visiting different destinations.
Most ASIAN COUNTRIES such as CAMBODIA, VIETNAM will allow you to stay for at least one month on a tourist visa, Thailand, Malaysia, Japan and South Korea allow you to stay for upto 3 months. It’s also possible to extend your stay in these countries some places on a tourist visa, but also by applying for a business visa. For India I have a 5 year tourist visa that allows me to stay in the country for 6 months each calendar year.
Once you’ve completed your stay of up to 3 months in one country, just continue your journey to another neighbouring country.
CONS OF TRAVELLING AROUND
Continuously travelling is not for everyone who strive for stability and routine. Although flying is cheap, It works out more expensive travelling between countries all the time and booking accommodation for short periods of time, rather than having a longer rental lease.
It can get tiring constantly researching new countries for flights and accommodation.
Changing currencies. Buying new sim cards for each country.
The need to find places with good internet.
The older you get the more tiring and stressful it could be. It can be detrimental to your physical and mental health. By constantly travelling You can get burnt out pretty quickly. I should know as it’s happened to me a few times. A few times I’ve arrived in destinations and realised I need to call a halt, just stay here for awhile.
Depending on your ability to speak the language in the country you’re visiting, you can feel disconnected from the people. This is why as I single guy I feel more connection and comfortable living in English speaking countries.
if you’re moving on all the time just having transient relationships with people can be isolating, rather than creating meaningful relationships when you’re in one place.
Sure you can maintain online contact with your friends and family back home, but you don’t have the same relationship you had with them whilst there in the flesh.
Not having a permanent home can have a negative psychological effect on your psyche. I don’t have a home anymore.
Have always rented, so I don’t have a home back in the UK.
When people ask where I’m from it’s a difficult question to answer.
I’m basically homeless.
I always say that I’m originally from Essex, east of London, although I left there and moved to London in the early 90s.
I’m gonna keep moving around. I’m a young man. I’m not dead yet!

LBH ...I sure am ...want to lose contact with TOXIC people. I "LOVE" various Aisan cultures. Desire only limited time with expats as I enjoy the non-confrontational attitudes, the food and their gracious kindness. In the states, some make sport outa tripping up others. I've been scammed more in America in 3 yrs than in Thailand fo 16 yrs. FINE ...I go where people are kind and it's live and let live.
I enjoy your content very much.
I like your style and sense of humor and find all your vlogs informative and very entertaining. Unfortunately for me because of finical difficulties I can't live in SE Asia until I retire but meanwhile following your Travels gives me insight for where I want to be. The UK is a wonderful Country but to expensive and the quality of Life in SE Asia and the people make me want to experience adventure for my remaining days.
Thank you so much
The pros and cons were very well explained Philip... Insightful. Thanks
It always amazes me when people have lived in the Philippines for 3 year or more on a tourist visitor visa, that's not being a tourist .. I don't blame the Philippines authorities for putting their visa rules into effect rather than just letting the visa being renewed time after time.
I am moving there permanently within the next couple of months.. one of the first things I will doing is getting a SRRV retirement visa.
Im amazed with people who agree with laws restraining freedom
I haven’t taken settling down and living in America off the table, yet. I may move to Asia, after I retire.
That’s exactly what I do. It is far more interesting, you meet far more great people, I grow far more as a person, I have more choices for so many meaningful parts of my life, I have far more intimacy choices as well. I will settle into one country when my body limits me. These are the best years of my life. I feel completely alive and passionate about my life.
Uncle...I always like your videos. Interesting concept. I am doing a bit of a variation with my Yacht. Thing is its lots more expensive paying Marina fees and traveling too. Cheers from Lumat Malaysia. Hey wonder besides Kuala Lampur if you have any favorites. Even as to what area in KL you found reasonably price and good for the money. Cheers from Lumut Malaysia
Thanks for your appreciation Kim. Sounds like sailing the seas is a blast. Yr message arrived just as I'm (spookily) heading to KL on Tuesday. But just for 5 days. Staying in the Brickfields area which I love for the Indian food/vibe. Have also visited Georgetown/Penang years ago and found some decent/budget food/accommodation there. Where to next my friend?
I have come to appreciate your video editing skills of late, and the thoughtful introspection you include in each one. Cheers, mate! And I got a good chuckle at the last few minutes of the video. Here in America at the beach where I live, you can't bring a dog onto the beach during summer between the hours of 8 AM and 7PM, and you must have it on a leash and clean up its poo, etc. To see cows randomly chilling on a beach in Asia strikes me as refreshingly hilarious.
You are not missing much back in Blighty. We are coming back to Asia next week, and we can't wait. Like yourself I have spent the last 30 years or so travelling away from the UK mostly spending it in Asia, so I can't complain and can look back thinking I did it well and did not spend all my time working. We don't spend winters in the UK any more and will tail off our time in the UK for the coming retirement years like yourself. So we are with you!
Agreed. Philippines. Thailand. And Vietnam
Don’t know why you don’t want to visit other countries in the world really. For me I’ve enjoyed Colombia, as was married to a Colombian for 20 years and had a happy family life! If language is a problem for you there’s many other English speaking countries to discover. Belize, Jamaica, Trinidad, Guyana, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, South Africa, plus many more. Nothing ventured nothing gained!
Asia is very safe, latin america and africa, not so much
Also, Phillip, which sites do you recommend for airline tickets and hotel reviews in Asia?
I generally look for fares on Skyscanner, then try and book directly with the airline. Agoda and Booking.com are my go to (two) sites of choice.
nah, definately spend longer time in each country mate. Just spent 14 months in Thailand, 1 year rental was cheap. Moved on to Vietnam, wasnt asked any questions at customs. This might change in 2025 as Thailand implements the taxation of your global income. Im looking to stay in Vietnam minimum 12 months on 3 month rentals which are cheap as chips
stay in a bank vault🤭
Your idea of settling down means "you might as well be dead already". I couldn't disagree more. I'm very much looking forward to making a permanent home base in PH where I can integrate myself into a community, take up new activities, and have continuity of life. Of course I will enjoy traveling throughout SE Asia whenever the notion might strike me. However, forever being on the move wears on a person... even you Phillip. Do you recall how you remarked feeling 'run-down' from your travels in Mindanao. I'm sure you'll play it all off (without giving any mention of the health issues concerning you during that trip) as a normal part of fast vs slow travel. Well, to each his own... you do you... for me, no thanks. I'm gonna find a place to call home, a community, and god willing a partner to share life with. As to the click bait - "Don't Stop Moving" - You've been to most of these places 2 to 3 times by now so clearly you're not running to anything... so it begs the question; what are you running from - if it's not other than yourself. Wherever the wind blows you, I wish you safe travels and happy trails. Peace and Love, B Goat
Because in the long run, people need the feeling of having a home where they have lived for about 5 years and know the surroundings, the shopping and the people. (all emotional)
On the other hand, the tax issue is also important for many people. For non-Americans, it is important to have a fixed place of residence that you can prove you will be living there permanently or for at least 180 days plus. This can sometimes save a lot of tax.
Traveling around is not a good idea in the long term.
You have to find out what makes you happy. Then they can stay healthy. That is a central point!
Love, health and prosperity. That is it
Nice essay, Phil.
I thought I had SAD. Now I realize I don’t.
I see that Gio is also in Japan at the same time. It’s an interesting contrast to see all of the things that he is doing versus the exploring that you have shown us. Any chance of a meet up with him?
Thanks.
Why not?
Nope.
You read my mind!
I love the idea!!!
I think by learning the origins of the surfing slang word "cowabunga". SE Asia is Philip's comfort zone. He's put in the work to live an interesting life.
Thanks!
Thank you! 🙏

Thanks for your donation my friend. Very kind of you.
B. Goat 🐐 spitting out some serious wisdom.
The current Bureau of Immigration commissioner - in the Philippines - decided to force more expats to do an SRRV or the 13a for marriage - as opposed to allow the continued use of the tourist visa ! --- $ appears to be the reason. Especially the amount of cost for the SRRV to obtain !!! --- I expect it will force many to leave the country that can't afford the requirements to obtain the SRRV - so the Philippines will lose out on all the $ they would have spent in country ? -- Instead -- I can see countries like Cambodia benefit benefit from their over 55 'retirement visa' - offering much friendlier terms !!! It may cause 'some' to pay the $10,000 deposit and forget they have that $ ? - - - Seems like THAT is what is happening here and so things will be different going forward it appears. --?-- 🤔
money over matter
You cant be homeless if your a nomad, and yes.... keep your life exciting everyday with an adventure everyday...so keep moving until the day you die.....
The question you brought up...."what are you running from", isn't the issue in my opinion. The question is, what are you running to, is more the question, isn't it! Will you find it and will you know it when you find it. OMG that's too deep
I believe the key to happiness is to have a purpose in life. Just traveling won’t be enough.
How do you intend to renew your passport or travel document?
Last time I renewed my passport in Thailand. Wasn't that expensive. Got 5 years yet. I might expire b4 my passport expires.
I've done the whole central.and south america. Looking forward to sea. But there is something special about Columbian women 😊
I wish I was brave enough to go there lol
Pal, you're video title is alarmingly contradictory 🤔😂
South America young man. Its way better than S E Asia. Try Sao Paulo.
El Salvador?
What are the best places in India to visit ?
Good question! There's so much to see. It's taken me so many trips to cover only half the country. Depends how long yr considering and how much noise you can tolerate. As a newbie I'd consider the Delhi/Agra/Rajasthan route. Nowadays I just stick to the beaches of Goa and Kerala - but they're still noisy!
Good on you Phill..you continue to be my ' go to u tuber ' for consistent, simple and factual content, supports my nomadic lifestyle, hope to see you on the road someday, cheers, Dave
Just wondering why you never had any desire to run to South America? Asia is great but so many countries in SA are gems to hang out in. Certainly worth a few months thrown in between your next few cities! Start south in Argentina and then move north through Uruguay and then to Brazil for the first six month run.
I agree. Latin America is way more diverse and fascinating than dirty ol’ India.
why aren't you exploring and showing more of Japan?
Japan is not very hospitable for westerners who'd like to live there for a while. Japan is not only very expensive but is also known to be ethnocentric.
Whats y experiance with Lao ?
I've visited Laos twice, around 2005 and 2009. Enjoyed my visits but prefer Cambodia and Vietnam. I imagine it's a lot more touristy now.
@@BiggWorldCinema Thanks for reply . I like Cambodia too, but sometime too touristy.
About your video, it's very good and it was definitely a lot of work to edit the individual scenes from the many videos together. Back to Laos. A lot of tourists from China. But you can find places that are not yet overcrowded. Check out the video. "Vieng Xai Laos: Home of the COMMUNIST CAVES | Now in Lao"
I was alone in this place. Savanakhet is also very relaxing. Overnight stay around 6 to 8 dollars.
Maybe you can add a small drone to your equipment for aerial photography.
😎🇺🇲👍
Excellent work 👍
I think the days of guidebooks were more exciting as you were able to use your imagination based on the writers viewpoint but I myself use the Internet almost exclusively these days....shame really.
I remember the days of traveling with guide books. If I can say, it was slightly more exciting once you got there because most of your expectations were in your imagination and in your head.
Now you can find virtually any experience on earth captured in a UA-cam video which will show you how much who will pick you up how long it will take and how big the crowds are. It kinda takes the fun out of it just a little bit. Don’t get me wrong. The Internet has changed. Travel for the better, but some things are still left up to nostalgia.
Yawn 🥱
Get some sleep, big guy.
just a frustrated old man who didnt manage to lay a asian for months. reminds me of another youtuber lol
