  • This is my latest speedrun of Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back! I have since obsoleted this time, but there's no video on UA-cam of the new run yet. But this run is still pretty good!
    Not a commentary fan? Right this way. • Crash Bandicoot 2 - 10...
    If you ever want to watch me do some speedrun attempts live, this is the place to go: / mrbean35000vr
    So! How does one take an already good run and cut another 8 minutes from it? Well, a change in hardware, some new tricks, and less deaths. This run was played on a real PAL PS2 slim with Fast Disc Speed enabled, which saves huuuuuge time on level loading. However, even without FDS, this run is faster than my old 1:29:39. Strictly speaking, this new run is actually 1:20:50.95, but I don't care enough to nitpick over it. Round it up and be done :P
    Like my old run, this video is commentated by me (MrBean35000vr) and Chadderz, my younger brother. The left side banner was made by me, and the clock belongs to Chadderz. Hope you appreciate both of them as they sure took a while to make!
    A brief breakdown of this run, then. There were 5 accidental deaths this time around, of which only one was particularly terrible. The other 4 were due to my sheer incompetence at life but wasted less than 10 seconds apiece. All in all, I got very lucky with where I died. In particular, Warp Room 4 did not troll nearly as hard as usual, much to my pleasure.
    So, for those new to Crash 2 speedruns, allow me to share with you some information about movement techniques.
    The primary method of movement is Neutral Slide Spin, or NSS. To perform it, do a slide, then release the d-pad button or analog stick, and press spin before the slide ends. If you don't release the direction, your spin will be slow, but it's fast if you don't! A very fun and challenging way to play.
    Glitched high jumps can be performed by spinning as you leap off the ground in a slide or crouch jump. These insanely high jumps can be used to jump to ledges or clear holes that are supposed to be impossible to clear.
    The game allows you to keep crystals and gems in death, so deathwarping is viable in this game. It is used whenever dying is a faster method of going somewhere than walking there.
    There are many other tricks, but YT descriptions aren't allowed to be too long. Watch the video for more!
    This run was a long, long time coming, so I hope it is enjoyable to watch. Thanks to everyone who's been supportive while I sat there and reset and reset and reset and reset :P
    Special thanks go to a few people; trihex and pirohiko for being my original inspiration. Sword0fSeals for being a boss and inventing strats and sitting there through tons of my runs while doing his own. Chadderz, because commentary among other things. CaneOfPacci for keeping those Crash leaderboards running (see docs.google.co...) and the other members of the Crash speedrunning community for various reasons, primarily for picking such a good set of games to speedrun :P
    With that said, please enjoy, and thanks for watching/reading!

      sadly so, i am glad they're adding extra modes and moves in though.
      even if it's just the crash 3 moveset in all the games which would be easier to code than 3 individual ones, and the time trials just tend to change boxes and fruit around.
      now the original trilogy being easy to access for new audiences is always great, more crash fans to support the series if crash doesn't get relegated to skylander only like spyro did.
      hell the skylanders are the big reason i'm not excited, i know that if i support it it won't make a new crash game like megaman legacy collection (or whatever the PS4 one is called) didn't make a new megaman game, it's just marketing to make more money and with a slue of crash reviews coming out youtubers child audiences will see that crash is also in skylanders and buy it, by the next game he'll be on the sidelines of the series.

    R1-X-Square-Circle. Needs good timing or you'll not get enough height, or the red gem won't be low enough to be grabbed in the first place.

    At 38:35 you don't break one of the boxes but it still counts when the bear does. So why bother breaking any of them in these levels? Or how exactly does it work?

    • @MrBean35000vr
      @MrBean35000vr  10 років тому +2

      If I go too fast while missing boxes, I may cause them to unload before the bear hits them. If that happens, they won't get broken at all. But if I can guarantee that the box will be loaded when the bear gets to it, I don't need to worry. The same applies in the boulder levels. Basically, if I can see a box, it's loaded, and if I can't, it isn't.

    Wait... What? You can lift your lefts up on the grates to avoid being damaged? You've gotta be kidding me. I've beaten this game over 4 times and I've always just spun to avoid them (which is stupid and not nearly as easy). I figured I would learn things from watching this, but I wasn't expecting to learn that I didn't know about a game mechanic.

    Is PS2 slim really 6 minutes faster? Because I run this game on an original PS (NTSC) and got 1 hour 41 minutes. I died 7 times, but most of them were right after a checkpoint, yet I've seen runs with considerably more time-loss deaths that finish sooner than mine.

    • @MrBean35000vr
      @MrBean35000vr  2 роки тому

      It certainly saves quite a lot of time, but your main problem is probably going to be using the NTSC version of the game. The PAL version is faster overall (and you would need a PAL console to match). When they ported the game, they sped up the physics a little bit to make it so that the game wouldn't run at 5/6 speed due to our framerate, but the conversion was slightly off and so Crash moves faster and jumps higher, which saves a lot of time over all the levels in the game.

    • @miragenights801
      @miragenights801 2 роки тому

      @@MrBean35000vr That explains how off certain moves are in videos I watch to when I perform them, it doesn't appear physically possible, and it's incredibly difficult to NSS over pits. PAL certainly would make things easier. I would love to body slam every crate instead of finicking around with that wonky hit detection. But that's interesting. Now I'm wondering what my time would translate to under the fastest version. Would you know the subtraction off top to say if it'd be under 1 hour 40? And by how much specifically if so?

  • @MrBean35000vr
    @MrBean35000vr  11 років тому

    It's easier on PAL, or so the rumours go. On NTSC, it is certainly possible to get it in the way I do. However, much easier is a trick where you stand on the bouncy box to the right by spinning when you jump on it, and then using that for a little extra height to do a slide spin jump body slam and catch the gem.

  • @MrBean35000vr
    @MrBean35000vr  11 років тому

    The timing on the Diggin' It box count glitch is totally unfair. All you can do is keep trying until you get it. Even sometimes when it looks like it should work, it simply... doesn't. It's very silly.
    As for Lv2, the red gem is moving slowly up and down. You have to hit it with the body slam as it moves downwards in order to get it from the floor.

    Haha, no it does not happen very often, but it's something you can practice with relative ease. All you have to do is jump out of a spin at the right moment and you can go right past the animation trigger, but the level still loads anyways.

    Usually the result is no music, but otherwise the game is normal. In some cases, it causes the texturing inside the warp room to be corrupted, which is interesting to look at.

  • @TonyElTigre42
    @TonyElTigre42 9 років тому +1

    No matter how hard I try, I can't do a slide spin like you do. Crash doesn't gain any more speed that a normal one. Is this only a glitch in the PAL version? Or am I just just not doing it right.
