- Uncommentated version: • TAS - Crash Bandicoot ...
TASvideos submission will be coming out 11/11/22. Watch this space.
TAS timing: 56:30 (from power on to last input)
RTA timing: 52:15 (from pressing start on title to end of last level)
The RTA timing above has been adjusted to match console loading times, since Emulator loses over 3 minutes to loads.
This is a tool-assisted speedrun. For more information see: tasvideos.org/
-What's This Category?
This is the full completion category of Crash 1, where you must get 100% and end on getting the best ending at the end of the great hall.
The only limitations are that using passwords and using zip-zagging is banned. Passwords would allow me to jump straight to the end of the game and ruin the point of a speedrun. The second restriction is no zip-zagging (zip-zagging video: • Crash Bandicoot 1,2,3 ... ). The reason for this is to make the movement closer to what a human would perform. Zip-zagging is impressive for the first few levels, but after a few levels they begin to all look the same. I asked many people in the community and there was a very strong preference to banning zip-zagging. Note: This is not to be confused with zig-zagging which is a fundamentally different technique and is still allowed, it gives a much smaller speed boost and is used RTA.
-What's a TAS
A TAS, or "Tool Assisted Speedrun" demonstrates the fastest time that a speedrun could be completed without the usual disadvantages of human reaction times, skill, luck and execution. This is achieved by slowing down the game and deciding exactly which buttons are the best to press for each frame. The result is played back at full speed and often looks like perfect and/or superhuman gameplay. I have a podcast explaining this in more depth: • Tool Assisted Podcast ...
Congrats to Tbolt who guessed the closest time during the premiere of this TAS. Tbolt's guess was 51:20 which was only 55 seconds off the actual time.
Played on Bizhawk 2.7.0
So all those times where I spun the top of a lizard and flung myself into a pit, I was actually doing a high class TAS maneuver... Ahhhh I'm good.
At this point i would have been more surprised if a new early game time saving trick was NOT found right after this TAS was finished. Great TAS btw.
This is an amazing TAS. The Lost City actually broke my brain!
You'd made an excellent work on this TAS. Your comments are more than welcome for both layman and experienced Crash runners.
Time to time I return to watch your videos (both this one and Warped) and always admire your effort, specific knowledge of the game and of course the quality of the content.
Hope you're doing well.
This video feels like you’re showing off a project at the science fair
25:28 the "camera stuff" whisper tripped me the hell out for a sec
Well done 8bitbeast, I loved your Crash 3 TAS but this might be your finest work.
Amazing TAS and great commentary explaining all of it making it even more interesting! awesome
I have never watched a speedrun before, so when I wanted to see a Crash Bandicoot speedrun, I wanted a commented one. Yours was really interesting and I am incredibly fascinated now because I love game design and development and this is an incredibly nerdy, fun and interesting way to look at games and game tech. Also I just love Crash Bandicoot and my brain absolutely exploded when I watched it at that speed. Thank you for doing and showing this!
I love commentary tas, thanks for this masterpiece 🗿🍷
I'm glad I found your commentated TAS playlist
You've made some groundbreaking stuff, dude
Thank you so much for the commentary!
Pog but I'm on the verge of passing out, guess I'm sleeping to crash bandicoot 1 noises
TASs like this are so impressive and commentaries make them so fascinating
Great run and commentary
Congratulations and thank you
Amazing TAS. Well done.
Amazing video
_"The first thing you're going to notice is"_
Japanese text?
_"that I'm going to be jumping a lot."_
Oh.
I don't get it.
@@hypnotised-clover If it wasn't for speedrunning, he'd probably have English text.
@@Antsaboy94 Okay, and?
@@hypnotised-clover The expectation is that he'd be playing in English. The fact he isn't is immediately obvious. It's the first thing one might notice, even before the constant jumping.
@@Antsaboy94 Pretty sure all runs are done on the japanese version of the game, I don't know what you're talking about.
Oh hey, this is like Sample's video! Good times, listening to someone actually explain what the hell's going on.
Oh hell yeah babey, this is the good stuff
Based and boxpilled, hope you make some more on other classic games
I’m glad you made this video.
amazing run and commentary!
So cool to see a double jump in Crash 1
This might be an odd compliment, but I think the sound quality of your mic is really good (coming from someone whose only commented TAS watched was Crash 3 105%).
Thanks! From memory that one was recorded on an old guitar hero mic. Ive had a bit of an upgrade since
Idk what TAS means, but this is impressive. My platinum relics now look like aluminum.
Thats is actually a great things
great work!
Nice vid 8bit. Would have been cool to have splits or a timer, something for next time?
Thanks dossey. Not a bad idea, could be a nice way to un 4:3 it
Quite late, but regarding the blue gem platform required - it is possible to hit some of the crates in the lower area with triple mask form without entering the area using the gem by jumping in the pit that is above the area. The issue is getting out of the pit. Have you tried anything regarding this? I remember Rexayy looking into it couple years ago.
Yeah a skip for this was found about a week after the TAS was finished ua-cam.com/video/wbtxDccuYGc/v-deo.html adding it in basically means redoing the TAS from the start, so it wasnt really an option. Maybe I'll do a V2 inclusing it someday
@@The8bitbeast Wow thats cool. And annoying. For the other ones. Pink in fortress looks absolutely unavoidable. Purple in boulders 2 seems slightly more doable, but only if the camera can be manipulated into switching, which doesnt seem doable. Has anyone tried whether it doesnt switch if you position it precisely enough (similar to hang em high yellow gem skip).
Great video. Will you be doing a commentary on your Crash 3 TAS?
Yeah I did live commentary when it came out ua-cam.com/video/moFY7p5EtxM/v-deo.html
I need a new crash 3 tas from you
You are gonna do a TAS Crash Bandicoot 2? Greetings!
Greetings! Someone has already done a good TAS of Crash 2
Damn
If only I could open a TAS guide without closing it like a minute later
Do you have hand tremors or something that caused you to accidentally click off of this delightful video? I'm so sorry bro :/
Read it again
14:49 this level...
The lost city was genuinely perfect 😭😭
No blue gem skip?
crash 2 tas with commentary?
Sorry Ive never TASed crash 2 so maybe not. There is already a good tas of it though
Can you lizard boost off mark zuckerberg?
top tier comment
😢
I'm sorry man, but this commentary is awful. Not even 7 minutes in and I have so many more questions than I have answers.
1. Not explaining how you spun a box way behind you at 0:57
2. Briefly and vaguely mentioning something about having "5 spins" that take 1 second to recharge. This is particularly confusing because not only would 99.9% of players would have no idea about this apparent spin-stamina mechanic, but you make little attempt to explain why you don't spin for large periods of time if it only takes 5 seconds to recharge your spins. You briefly (again) mention that it's related to managing cycles, but are the ones you're planning the run around really SO tight that you need to intentionally slow down 6-7 levels early to line them up? This would have been extremely interesting to talk about, and you just don't.
3. You talk about "Z-optimization" but it's unclear whether this is an actual strategy you're describing or a ridiculous way of explaining that you want to take the shortest path to the end of a level. You say that spins are most "effective" in the 8-main directions, with no further explanation. You already rarely spin mid-level.
4. You explain "sub-jumping" and then immediately repeat your explanation for double-jumping without any further clarification. So you can always double-jump? What does clipping into the leaf have to do with anything? Did you mean that clipping into the leaf before the jump makes the game think you're on the ground after jumping?
I can't watch anymore of this.
love the commentary. super illuminating
Great video. Will you be doing a commentary on your Crash 3 TAS?
