Verizon 5G Home Internet 90 Days Later: Still Worth the Money?

  • Folks said that speed and reliability would suffer on 5G-based home internet services as more people signed up. Here's what happened to me 90 days after getting Verizon 5G Home Internet.
    *** UPDATE ***: Passthrough mode on the Verizon Gateway does work now! To plug in an external Wi-Fi router, plug it into the LAN2 port of the gateway and enable passthrough mode on the gateway.

    I went from an atrocious 3mb with frontier to over 200mb with Verizon. For those wondering why only 3mb. We just moved to a 3 bedroom mobile home. Everything is great about the home and the area but this is the gotcha part. Frontier made a deal with the management to be the sole provider for this mobile home park. They haven't updated to fiber in this area yet, so they're running on ancient dsl phone lines and are charging residents 50 bucks for 3mb. And no, it can't be upgraded. Yet. I was like hell to the nah. We're gonna figure something out and came across this video. Just picked one up today and loving it so far. I've got 2 rokus, 4 tablets, 4 phones, a laptop running wifi and a direct ethernet connected pc. Still over 200mb speed. Loving it. Thank you for this review.

    Thanks for the review. Very helpful and no vested interest. Only reason I’m considering Verizon is because I’m a mobile costumer and qualify for more discounts. The 5G towers are relatively uncontested compared to high density towns nearby.

    • @BrianShim
      @BrianShim 11 місяців тому

      Ah, it's a great deal with the Verizon wireless discount. Just make sure your wireless plan qualifies - not all do. And, when you switch, don't immediately cancel your old provider; have some overlap so in case there's a problem with Verizon and you need to go back. But, it's been working great for me. - Brian

    Great Review. Looking forward to hearing your results in a few more months. I just got my VHI. The Tower is about a block away. When I first tested it after initial plug-in, I got over 600 download. Then it settled in to the standard 300/20. It seems when I reset the VHI I get much higher values initially. Interesting. I wonder how many customers they allow for each tower.? And how far out distance wise, they allow subscribers? I live in a highly dense housing area and seems to be maintaining their top advertised limits of 300/20. My Verizon 5G phone gets 600-800/50-80 from my house too.

    Great video. I have a couple of questions. Does Verizon throttle your internet speed? You also mentioned your wifi was great, however, I have 3 kids and we have multiple devices that use wifi. How well does the speed of the internet hold up? Currently I have 3 tvs that we stream everything we watch on, 4 cell phones, 2-3 gaming consoles, 3 computer devices and 2 tablets. Now they don't all get used at once but a good 4 of them do. I guess my question is how many devices can I connect to this home system? Can my computer and on tv be connected directly with an ethernet cable?

    • @disablemycable
      @disablemycable  Рік тому +1

      Thanks Fernando! Your results may vary, but I'm getting around 200 to 270 Mbps. You should test your current internet speed using a service like fast.com and compare this to your current speed: fast.com/
      Yes, there are two ethernet connectors - perfect for your computer and TV.
      Or, you can connect an external Wi-Fi router and disable the onboard Wi-Fi.
      I've read that Verizon limits 10 devices to connect to the 2.4GHz and 30 devices on the 5.0GHz, but I have not tested those limits myself. - Brian

    After reading all the comment, I guess I'm just in a terrible area for this service. I'm about month in and so far my speeds range from 1 - 20 mbps. Only on some days have I seen it go up to 30 - 50, but only for a for a few hours before it drops. Even trying the Verizon app to find the "best" spot for the gateway doesn't help at all.

    We have had ours for a year and a half and was great until recently. IP address was not stable as it was. Oh, when signed up they said we would get a $200-300 gift card that they backed out on and changed to just a $50 in store discount. Now since Jan had several issues, would call and try to get fixed and got told sorry they can do nothing. This last time it was over heating possibly fire hazard, they said sorry once you get a box we do not replace them for any reason that is our policy. I filed a complaint with the FCC, which they called and said even their insurance does not cover them I'm out of luck, but they will keep charging you. Just know that if they have internal issues it is a fight to get help with that.

    Just got Verizon home internet plus. It's a little slower than Spectrum by about 30-50 mbps less. I performed several tests from upstairs and downstairs and notice that it works best downstairs with cable to computer and everything else on wireless.
    The main difference is Spectrum has faster dl while Verizon has faster ul with ping being 25ish on Spectrum and 35ish on Verizon. Gaming on phone while watching hulu has been fine with no lag. So far so good but will need to see more during next couple of weeks.

      @alejandroshernandez2525 Still have the cube downstairs plugged into computer. Speed on computer is fine, pretty much same as Cable. Upstairs I installed eero to get better wireless connection. Even without the eero, watching hulu and playing games was fine. Just 3-4 seconds slower when I download or update something. Wireless speeds fluctuate throughout the day from 160ish - 280ish. It gets best speed between 9p-8a. Overall, wireless is always going to be slower than hardwired. Charter even when you use wireless is better than Verizon. But I stuck with Verizon cause it's cheaper.

      It wasn't difficult at all. Just plug it in, then go into the Verizon router control panel and turn off both Wi-Fi bands. The caveat is that if you're doing something more unusual, like streaming video from your home network outside your network (from a Tablo or security camera), there might be issues that require more settings. For normal web browsing inside your home though, it is plug and play to connect another router.

      Exactly what 10Super said. A flat cable internet cable from the 5G antenna to the router.

    It's a great service until I connect to my work VPN. Then it's not. Non-VPN use I routinely get 200 to 300 Mbps download. When connected to VPN, the best I've achieved is 5 Mbps. With my 500 Mbps WOW plan, it only drops to 200 Mbps connected to VPN. So a 60x drop in download speed is not acceptable. I've tried contacting Verizon's tech support, and they're impossible to reach. Glad I'm still in the 30-day trial. I am curious if anyone else has similar issues with a VPN connection?

      Some people have said that putting the unit in Passthrough mode (and using with your own router) helps. Here's how to do that: www.disablemycable.com/blog/wifi-router-verizon-5g-home-internet-gateway/

      Something is very wrong, or there is something blocking your signal. Report to Verizon.

    Your review was unbelievably insightful. Clearly you and I are very disparate when it comes to "meeting customer expectations". You pay for 300 Mbps of download speed, you get 220 Mbps, and you are a satisfied customer. I would have dumped the Verizon service before the first month was up. I pay my cable company far too much money (in my opinion) for 300 Mbps of download speed, but I actually get over 330 Mbps. My household requires the download speed I pay for, so considering the Verizon option is out of the question (even though I would save about $30/mo.). Thanks again for your review.

    If you’re paying for 300Mbps and getting 100Mbps that’s not a B+.

      Verizon advertises 85 to 300mbps. Typically I see around 200mbps. Yes, it can vary, but even at 100Mbps I don't notice any difference in my browsing or streaming. 100, 200, or 300Mbps are all enough for my usage. Your needs may vary.

    You said 300 MBPS, but you need to back up your talks by performing more scientific test to hold the accountability. Speed test apps are deceptive & most users indeed fall for the deceptive numbers. Verizon FIOS is the only product which can show some consistency, but Comcast & Spectrum are better over-all. Level 3 DNS revolvers are mediocre for today's standards & that is the backbone of Verizon core infrastructure.
