- If you weren't a huge fan of the 2019 Sequoia, the light refresh for 2020 probably won't change your mind. If on the other hand you're looking for a big Toyota SUV with high reliability and strong towing ability, then you'll probably be happy that the 2020 Sequoia adds Apple Car Play and a TRD Pro model to the mix. Just be prepared for the middling fuel economy.

Over the holidays I did a 5,000 mile road trip in my 10 year old Sequoia and it went extremely well!
Keep it! It's reliability is unmatched.
I have had my Sequoia for the 10 years this month. For the last 10 years I have only replaced the oil and brakes. No problems in my 119,343 mile of driving. I love this vehicle.
Please give us another update in 10 years. No competitor comes close in QDR.
Honestly I like the design - it is almost timeless; car is solid , reliable and real, I would definitely buy this one (or landcruiser) over many competitors
That I force V8 will outlive this trucks competition for like the next 25 years that’s why Toyota’s are so expensive because you’re buying a quality product that’s built to last
its a six second elephant
Hey you were at our home OHV Park! It's a great place to test vehicles, I'm glad to see Toyota utilizing it.
Amazing and direct review of this amazing and direct vehicle
Outstanding presentation.
Sequoia rocks. Love this beast
this is one badass truck
I have had 3 SQs.
2001 limited
2010 Platinum
2015 Platinum
The car drives totally different in “tow haul” mode. Throttle response is tight and shifts stronger. Normal mode is an Econ mode and limits the feel of the 4:30 rear and the 401ftlb from the engine.
The milage is what it is, especially with the 4:30 real and the tight ratio 6sp. Don’t buy a 3ton car and expect 40mpg.
My 2010 was rated to tow over 10,000 lbs, but that rating was reduced to 7,400 in the 2015. Likely because there is no installed trailer brake controller, so with out an additional install the 10k trailer was relying on the stock brakes.
The platinum ride modes, sport, normal, and, comfort are fantastic. I use this feature constantly on long trips. As well, the platinum has auto ride leveling rear, so loaded down the car rides flat.
Stock brakes are not the best so I replaced mine with slotted DBAs and I have a 20” fuel wheel with a 2cm offset which looks really nice. The fuel wheel bolts right on with no mods.
The car is one of the most spacious and comfortable cars sold. My brother is a 2019 navigator max,$100,000, and the sequoia is a much better value and proven reliability.
I don’t have time to work on cars nor drop off at dealer, and I’ve had no issues with either 2010 or 2015 sqs. I drove both cars 40,000 miles beyond the life of the warranty with no fixes.
Oil changes are a chore, but no lifts are needed. The front skid requires about 10 fasteners to be removed to drop the skid. Once the skid is out of the way, the job is pretty straight forward. However, the 5.7 has an internal oil filter vs a spinner, so that takes some additional time.
I’ve driven both suburbans and the expedition max. Both nice cars. And mileage is better in both. But the FEM really sucks the fuel Over 75 MPH when constant boost is needed. And the suburban had better over all highway mileage. Because of the cylinder deactivation.
One gripe on the SQ IS THE SMALLER GAS TANK. suburban 33 and FEM 28.
Sq is 26 and reads empty at 20, so a full to empty light is only 350-380 miles.
The other two cars can easily hit 500 miles a tank and I’ve gotten 600 miles out of a suburban tank.
I’m Looking forward to the next gen SQ. this model was cutting edge in 2008 and is nearly unchanged since, but it is still a viable big suv choice In 2020. if Toyota dropped the land cruiser for us delivery, I’m thinking they’ll really focus on the SQ and the next gen since it will be their only large suv offering in the states.
i have one seq. (2003) and runs good no need for other one
$$
I still like the sequoia and not everyone wants a luxury SUV with 22'' tires and leather everywhere. Its a limited audience but some of us still want to keep things simple. The small fuel tank with a SUV that is this thirsty is a bit of a problem. I had the same problem with 2001 Pathfinder, it was kind of thirsty for a v6 and travelling between some towns I would have to take a jerry can and pour my own gas at the side of the road. At least Tundra has the 38gallon tank.
I have a 2017 platinum. We bought it as a family car and to tow our small trailer in comfort. The car definitely sucks the fuel. It can go maybe 200mi before tank is empty. Lots of gas stops when traveling distance. But it is as roomy as can be for our family of 5.
What's a fuel wheel?
Hard to believe this is the same chassis and design since i left high school in 2006,
You mean 2008
@@LandCruisinits not that much different than the 06 model year, i remember them ok
That isn't a bad thing

If something is reliable don't mess with it.
I love the instrument cluster.. I love this older simpler design. Looks great and easy to read .. Wish more of todays autos/suvs. would have this design.
I believe that the bulletproof tried & true 6 speed Sequoia transmission enhances the performance of the Sequioa.
I love it !!
This vehicle is ancient
That interior is all plastic
@J Packard ok maybe you can shed some light on this for me. Why is it some people berate like a canyon or something for having hard plastics but in a Toyota it's completely acceptable? Not aiming this specifically at you just curious.
@J Packard Thank you. I personally don't see why people berate hard touch plastics either. I think I've been watching too much redline reviews and cars.com because that's all they talk about. That's why I love Alex, he states facts not just what he thinks people want to hear. My mom has an 05 magnum she's had since 04 295k miles no issues but people swear up and down all American vehicles fall apart after 6 months.
Every Toyota is ancient, just like Scotty Kilmer and Guy Prolux and also the rest of the Toyota fan base.
@@jeffluo8960 LOL!
Toyota really could make this vehicle so much better. They know how to make reliable vehicles with efficient power trains, nice interiors, and plenty of features. Yet they don’t with their truck-based segment
Jay Mac -Lexus-
The 2021 GMC Yukon AT4 looks sexy but I question the QDR. Theres something I still love about the look of this sequoia.
Is it me, or are SUV prices just getting crazy !?! $60K plus is a lot of money for a car. But hey .. to each their own :) Love the video Alex.
6:10 The IP literally hasn't changed in a decade
Love the new front end, though
And the interior is pretty roomy
Alex, very detailed good informative videos, thank you. It would not hurt if you changed the opening short background music and replace it with a more vibrant, happy music!
NICE. TOYOTA gives you the fully loaded Sequoia TRD PRO (best version in my opinion) to drive and do a review in.
I want my truck to drive like a truck, solid.
I love it because though “you”say it looks ancient, it has smart phone integration, safety sense, body on frame, push button start, off-road and 7500 tow capable
“ you” referring to some viewers.
Very nice car
That AoA polo shirt is pretty slick. Can we buy that as merch?
a GM or a Ford is done around 100 t miles...this thing is still bulletproof at 500 t miles with only gas and oil change so yeah certain people buy this vehicle i’m one of them it’s not for everyone
Alex, You may have spent a little too long under that blazing sun. I only assert this radical #hypothesis because you erroneously stated the Sequoia has a solid rear axle when it is world famous for an independent rear suspension. Did a concentrated period of intense exposure to extreme heat lead you to confuse it with the new Mazda 3? In any case, the Sequoia is the American-made, 3 ton SUV most likely to last 20 trouble free years. Any potential owner committed to staying clear of the twin indulgences of commercial jet travel and the consumption of agricultural products heedlessly imported from the Southern Hemisphere, can rest relatively easy in regard to their future carbon footprint. Planting a few trees wouldn't hurt in that regard either. After all, the thing is called a Sequoia for a reason.
Misstatement near the end - not a solid rear axle in the Sequoia.

You do the best reviews.....you really should have been working with MotorWeek.
I want to see a new refresh.
Toyota Sequoia: If it ain't broken, don't fix it!
Yep...most of the technology in all the other models in this segment will fail. All of the features in this Toyota won't fail.
HDose But it is broke. Look, my kid’s toy wagon is super reliable, but that doesn’t make it a competition vehicle. Gotta do both things: modern design and features AND reliability. I’ve driven this car. The V8 sounds like it’s powered by a bag of rocks and is equally smooth. It spends all of it’s time in gears 1-3, so it’s always screaming, yet you never actually accelerate. The interior was dated in 2005 (I’m being generous, actually 1995) and if crappy hard plastics are your thing then you’ll be right at home. It’s 100% unpleasant to drive with the smoothness and comfort of a bad 90s pickup truck. Just gotta do better.
@@alliejr Glad I'm not the only one seeing an issue with this. Unless you're a diehard Toyota fan a lot of their competitors are better in different areas. The Koreans have the best warranty. The germans have better technology. Heck even American vehicles at least cost less and get incentives. I'm pretty sure if Ford was still selling the ranger from the 90s it'd be "reliable" but it'd also ancient.
This vehicle category in particular. The armada is old too but at least they significantly refreshed it. The Tahoe is about to be redesigned and the expedition is brand new.
@@alliejr Heck the Tahoe is about to go through it's FOURTH redesign from 2000 while the sequoia has literally been the same since 2000.
For some people, that fuel economy qualifies as broken.
10/10, I’d take reliability over fuel economy any day. If you can afford a Sequoia, you can afford the gas to put in it. 🤷🏻♂️ They’d be stupid to get rid of the 5.7 V8 + 6AT
i whole heartedly agree
Same thought I had when I bought my 2001 Seqouia new in 2000. Kept it for 22 years with over 250k miles on it. It was a beast and reliable to its very last day when I had an accident and it was totaled. I still miss it. Probably the most reliable vehicle I will ever have. Moving into a Tesla now - hopefully that will last 20+ years too.
@@tonynotstated695 now that we see what’s in the Tundra (which I’m guessing is exactly what’s in the next Sequoia), wonder how long that turbo V6 will hold up for the long haul?
13:30..listen for it: "Tacoya". Alex likes tacos, now we know;)
I'd like a comparison of the best 3 row SUVs, Space (legroom, headroom), reliability last fuel economy
I had no idea they still sold these
The highlander is a minivan...Sequoia rides higher and is a beast
No the Sienna is a minivan
its incredible what Toyota can get away with. Other brands get torn to shreds; imagine ford trying to sell a 20 year old expedition lol. I'm not talking about Alex, just in general.
LoneSpartan...Exactly! Some people will buy anything from Toyota just because it's a Toyota.
@@johnholst I would be less aggravated with Toyota if they wanted to let their vehicles age as long as the price reflected the age, but it doesn't. They still charge top dollar for ancient vehicles.
@@lonespartan31289 Agreed! This thing must be crazy cheap to produce compared to it's competition. Lots of profit for Toyota.

Hello Alex - Twice in this video the ability of this vehicle to tow 7,000 + pounds is qualified with "properly equipped". Please describe or provide other information as to what properly equipped means? Thank you!
Sequoia has way more cargo space than Nissan Armada 120 vs 95 with 2nd row seats down. Although armada is longer 209 vs 205 in.
Something I noticed about Toyota/Lexus, they have the same steering wheels that are made for right hand drive cars. In my Lexus I find it stupid to control stuff on my right side(infotainment) with controls on the Left side of the wheel and stuff in front of me with controls on the right of the wheel.
No doubt it is a rugged vehicle. However for a vehicle marked TRD, they should get A-TRAC and locks on the rear.
Is this in US?
I'd rather have a poor fuel economy than not have an off-road vehicle...
I hope Toyota remains traditional
Jeebus, the things got 'Alex moved in and won't leave' in cargo space....
13:31- Tuquia?
If you actually need one of these, there's no reason to buy a new one.
Someone has to buy the new ones...otherwise there would be no used ones.
so what's the diff b/w this and the LandCruiser? That's like Toyota making 2 compact CUVs, the RAv4 and another.. :/
The land cruiser is about 10 inches smaller for one. It’s also all about the name. The land cruiser name carries a lot of weight in the off roading community. Incredibly capable and tremendously durable. The Sequoia is meant for family duty and off roading (more overlanding) on the side. The land cruiser is off roading first and family duty second
@@Jaymac720 ahh.. kind of like the Highlander and 4runner :)
Carpediem06 I wouldn’t say that. It’s still a body on frame vehicle and costs $85,000. It’s based on the same frame as the Sequoia (the Tundra platform)
Since 2008!!!!!,!!
Why fix the MONA lisa??

Refreshed sequoia, but what’s the point in buying a new one when a 2006 is at 300k miles and has never needed a major repair...
He says there are crossovers that are more accommodating in the interior than the Sequoia. But he doesn't reference any - Which crossovers is he referring to? Honda Pilot? I don't think that's even close to the same size or class - VW Atlas? Not even close to the same amount of room...At least when you're actually in it - from my experience, measurements aside (And from a comfort standpoint (Width etc)) - Even the Nissan Armada (not mentioned) is smaller. I would imagine the extended versions of the expedition and suburban are the only bigger ones, but are they crossovers? I doubt many people actually cross-shop crossovers in this segment anyway - most people would either get a van or a smaller crossover unless they need to tow... And towing is what the sequoia shines at (I regularly tow 6000lb with mine loaded with 7 passengers) - it does it no probs without a sweat
Exactly.
Reliability over fuel costs for me
Good lord, why don’t they at least update the dash to the same as the Tundra? Lol
My sequoia is 18 years old.

I think it’s great that it has full LED headlights standard. I think every new car should have LED headlights, No matter how cheap, no matter what brand.
Wait until you have to change it or gets bothered by one or two diodes cease to function then you know why halogen lamps will always have its market.

The narrator refers to torque in "Pound Feet". There is no such thing as pound feet. Until recently engineers, mechanics and enthusiasts have always referred to torque in terms of Foot Pounds. There is a good reason for this. Power is defined as the amount of energy available to move 1 pound 1 foot. The constant in this equation is the foot. It will never be plural (feet). Therefore the proper measure of torque has always been and should forever be described in terms of Foot Pounds (ft/lb.). Another common mistake I hear is when someone refers to the engine as a motor. A motor is powered by an external source, and engine produces it's own power internally. Alternators, water pump, drive-train are all motors. Engines are engines.
I honestly don't see the appeal of this vehicle. Unless you're a Toyota fan I cannot legitimately think of a reason to purchase this over the competition. It gets abysmal gas mileage. The vehicle itself is old as dirt. The technology is seriously lacking and it's interior looks like it was lifted from 2005.
Because they wants to remain their “Most Reliable” title. Same as most of the Lexus and Toyota V6 based vehicle. 2GE 3.5L V6 had been served over 20 years already.
@@showyentertain1613 the land cruiser is a MUCH better buy used than the sequoia is new. and tbh most people dont care about reliability anymore they always get the new thing and the expedition beats it in terms of ownership length. almost all the other suvs seat more, get better mpg and are better in the short term unlike the sequoia that like the OP said looks like my 05 ram srt10 interior...but if you want reliability your better of with the 4runner and or highlander imo
@@ThaMagnaCarta A lot of people care about reliability. Why do you think Toyota's are so popular? Anybody who values their money gets a reliable car.
@@showyentertain1613 I completely understand that but at what point will that stop being the excuse for everything. Toyota is literally the last auto manufacturer to offer android auto and Apple car play (aside from tesla). The Germans and Swedes have far more luxurious and technologically advanced interiors. By the time I open the driver's door, like 3 galons of gasoline have already been gone on this dinosaur truck.
I can understand who the company is marketing this vehicle for, but a looking 2004 interior and 2009 exterior, is not a good match in my opinion. So I only speak on my behalf.
If they bring that same vehicle to current market, with appropriate interior and exterior design, perhaps it can appeal to a larger segment or group of people. Those positive changes should not negatively affect its capabilities.
Same face of furtuner
Nobody really liked them when they came out because they were already antiques and very utilitarian but people bought them because they served that very utilitarian purpose. Those very original buyers still have them. Every panel on the paint now is filled to a different color outside. Similarly inside every plastic panel is a different color and some are warped and the carpeting doesn’t resemble anything that looks like any color in any panel in the interior at all. One or two of the plastic door handles inside or out broke a year or two ago and the owner still hasn’t gotten around to replacing it in the driveway on the weekend and there’s a broken steel belt in one of the tires and goes whoop whoop at low speed as a result. It’s got 275,000 miles under its belt and it looks like ass but whenever those owners get into them they turn the key or press the button and the machine starts up and runs with mechanical perfection and all of those original owners are going to retire earlier than the rest of us because they didn’t repeatedly replace their cars because they went with something that they knew worked and that’s who they continue to be built for.
It's a hard sell.
I could see someone buying one of these used, but you'd have to be crazy to buy it new. It already looks and feels 20 years old. Do you really think you're going to enjoy riding in this dinosaur 10 more years from now?

Reliability. I'd be more than happy to buy an older product, as long as it's reliable. I couldn't care less about anything else, except having power steering (that's a must for me).
@Rhyme905 Cool story.
Toyota has kept up Sequoia pricing with its competition but not the vehicle itself. My 2003 Tahoe offers the same towing capacity and mpg performance. As with the Tundra, we see continued reliance on yesterday's drivetrain technology...and where's the brake controller? Re: model 'refreshing', looks like lipstick on a pig?
I really don't understand why people still buying this model. If you have 70k I'm very sure that you can add 20k and get the ultimate " Land Cruiser" the king of Sahara.
Landcruiser is smaller then sequoia as I bought it in 2008 (still owns it) and I actually wanted to get landcruiser that time but when I compared both I ended up with sequoia and never regrets it
the lc is tiny and the majority of consumers do not go to the sahara, look at it from a marketing point of view
These are great cars but huge gas guzzlers. No thanks.
Who buys this kinda stone age artifact?
Unlike the stone age 4runner that does sell a lot this not so much. Less then 12K units a year. But its still more reliable then anything else in its class. But Toyota should update it now. They can't even bust 1000K units a month anymore. Its time. I expect the 4runner is the main reason sales have dropped. Its the one people still are buying. And that too sucks gas.
If you're looking for fancy infotainment and all the bells and whistles this is definitely NOT your truck! Toyota is so stodgy and conservative it's almost laughable, if they didn't also cost so much.
